Ipod doesn't connect to computer properly! help!!!

I connected my ipod to my computer overnight and the next morning, the screen was frozen with the "do not disconnect" sign and wasn’t recognized by my computer. I then plugged in my ipod with the power adaptor, but the ipod screen was still frozen. After following the help page, I reset my ipod. Now when I plug it into an outlet, it displays the folder symbol. When plugged into my computer, it'll cycle between the folder, a the apple, and then will start flashing the "do not disconnect" and charging battery symbols. Unfortunately, this will only last for a few seconds, and the cycle repeats. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Any tips? Thanks!!!

See if anything here helps.
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point after disconnecting.
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point when you turn it on.
iPod shows only an Apple logo and doesn't start up.
Only the Apple logo appears when turned on.

  • IPod doesn't appear on computer, charge, or turn on

    My problem is this:
When I connect my iPod to a computer USB port (I've tried three different computers and several ports on each), all that happens is a battery with a lightning bolt appears. It's not animated or anything, and it's monochrome. I leave it plugged in for a few hours and nothing happens. It often fickers or flashes, but not in any steady pattern.
When I connect the iPod to the wall USB charger, several different icons flash on and off the screen. The Apple logo usually appears first, then it flickers off after a few seconds. The screen then cycles between being blank, displaying the battery with exclamation point, displaying the sreen saying "apple.com/support/ipod" and the Apple logo again. It flickers through the logos very fast and often doesn't finish refreshing the whole LCD before trying to display the next one.
When the iPod is not connected to the cable at all, it usually displays the battery with exclamation mark icon for a few seconds just after being unplugged and then shuts off. It won't do anything after that.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • IPod won't connect to Computer or iTunes

When I plug my 5th gen. iPod nano into my Windows 7 PC, it doesn't show up in iTunes or My Computer. I've tried restarting my laptop and iPod, using a different cord, and connecting to a friend's PC which didn't work. Help please?

When you connected the Nano to your PC, did anything change on the iPod's display?  Did it appear to charge at all?
I assume you have worked through each and every suggestion in this Apple support document?
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
and connecting to a friend's PC which didn't work.
If the Nano is not being recognized by two different PCs, that rules out the possibility of an issue with your own PC and points to an issue with the Nano.  Check the Nano's dock connector port for any signs of damaged/bent pins or corrosion. If there is any debris lodged in there, take a can of compressed air and perhaps even a soft brush of some sort to dislodge and remove it.
Otherwise, you may need to take your iPod in for service or replacement.

  • IPod won't connect to computer or charge from computer.

Okay, so, I plugged in my iPod touch (4th generation) to my computer and nothing happens. Literally, nothing. It wont charge and it wont even install any data or anything. Its not the USB cord because I plug it into my wall charger and it charges. I don't think its the USB outlet either since I plug in other cords to other devices and they work/connect. I have a theory though. A few months ago my sister plugged her iPod into my computer, replacing my data with hers. During the months after that, I never plugged my iPod into my computer until now. Any suggestions?

  • IPod Freezing when connected to computer

My problem seems to be similar to all of the other problems people are having with iTunes 7, but I couldn't find something the same as mine, so here's my problem. Whenever I connect my iPod to by Powerbook G4 (this is only after i installed iTunes 7, my ipod shows the 'Do Not Disconnect,' but freezes - the circle with the cross does not flash. I proceed to reset the iPod, after which I can connect to my computer with no problems (iTunes 7 is really annoying, but i assume an update soon?????).
Is my problem an issue with iTunes 7 and will be solved with the supposed update, or does anyone know what might be causing it.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Everyone.
I've been having the same problem. i have a 5G ipod.. i did the latest firmware update a while back, and the iTunes 7 update. After that, whenever i connect the ipod to a mac, i see the red circle with a line through, and its not flashing, then the ipod is locked up. only way to make it work is reset the ipod while its connected..
I tried a full restore, and that did not help.. then I pretty much gave up, and hoped that Apple would release new firmware.
In a last attempt of hope, i thought i would connect the ipod to my new makbook pro.. just to see if it was a problem with the imac. well, same again. ugh. rats..!
So, i tried a full restore from this 'new' computer..
This time, i noticed something different.. iTunes decided to download the firmware again, and re-flash the iPod.. (with the same version)
ah.. now it works !!! i went back to the imac.. connected it.. loaded up all my tunes.. and it works.. disconnect.. plug back in.. no freeze !!!!
So, it seems that if you can try another mac, and restore.. or indeed get the firmware to download again, and apply to the iPod.. it just might work !!!
Hope this helps some folks out!

    Welcome to the discussion,
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Had to reformat my hard drive, now ipod doesn't recognize my computer

I was infected with numerous viruses and had to refomat the hard drive. When I connect the iPod, it doesn't recognize the computer as the same one, so I can't get the files that I already paid for off the iPod. Any ideas?

Yes, all you iTunes data are on the old drive. Get an external enclosure in which you may install the old drive in order to connect it to your computer and copy your iTunes data to your new drive.
Everything is on your old drive unless you copied it to the new drive.

  • IPod refuses to connect to computer

I'm sure you get alot of these.
Anyways, I have an old 40 gig iPod w/dock connector (the one without the buttons on the wheel, they're instead above it). Anyways, so I've never had a problem with it, I got it as a present a year ago and my dad bought it off eBay. Worked fine, and did for the year. Now whenever I try to connect my ipod, nothing happens.
If I unplug the cord, and then plug it back into either my computer or my iPod, i get a high-pitched whirring noise from my Ipod, and then clicking, like you get from your computer while it's thinking. Still my computer doesn't even know it's there, and my ipod doesn't either.
I've tried every single article i could find on this website to fix it and it aint doing **. Has this happened to anyone else annd did they fix it?

Sounds like a hard drive problem with the iPod.

  • Ipod classic not connect the computer and not load, what do I do?

    Help me please!

Have you tried plugging the iPod into a different USB port on your PC?  Preferably a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC and not a USB port on the front or via USB hub.
With the iPod still connected to your PC, try a hard reset.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, see this article for more troubleshooting suggestions.

  • Ipod Shuffle wont connect to computer and i cannot charge it.

My ipod shuffle charges via the computer and my computer is not recognizing the ipod and neither is itunes. I have treid all your 5 steps and its still not working, i cannot "RESET" it because my ipod isnt being recognised at all!!
    Help please.

They're not -my- five steps. They are, however, a useful start to troubleshooting iPod issues. Unfortunately, since Resetting iPod shuffle doesn't require the use of a computer, or require that the shuffle be recognized by your computer, I really don't know what you've done so far.
Here are some other things to try. iPod missing from My Computer A number of the things in this list won't be applicable to the shuffle, of course.

  • IPod touch battery charge icon won't light, USB doesn't connect to computer

I have an iPod touch 64 GB 4th generation that suddenly has charging and USB issues.  The charging icon will not light no matter what I try.  I have tried several different chargers and docks that have proven to be working properly using another unit of the same model.  Strangely, the iPod does appear to charge, but the battery indicator is a bit random and possibly doesn't indicate the actual charge level.
The iPod will also not connect to a computer using any of my iPod cables or computers.   I have tried putting it into DFU (didn't work - computer would not recognize iPod at all) mode and also did a full reset (wiping everything on it) and it is still acting the same.
As of now, it works normally, except battery level indicator cannot be trusted, and it is impossible to know if it is charging or is charged, and there is no way to back it up, meaning any content generated on the iPod will have to be backed up in some other way besides connecting to a computer via USB.
I know that the USB is working at least a little bit on the iPod, because the iPod will turn on when plugging it into the computer via USB, but nothing else will happen.
I also cleaned the connector area with contact cleaner and a light brush.
Any ideas on what else to try?

  • IPod screen goes black & heats up when connecting to computer - pls help!!

I posted this same question on somebody else's post but thought id post it under a different subject so someone may be able to help.
Im having a problem with my 30GB ipod in that it works fine when just listening with head phones, on my docking station or via my car stereo yet not on computer. When i connect ipod to any computer the ipod screen fades out, goes black & then the ipod becomes quite hot (more near the left hand side of control wheel) and both computer & i-tunes does not recognise it?? Does anybody have any ideas or have had the same problem and fixed it? I pod is nearly 2.5yrs old. thanks

Have you tried a different USB port or a different USB docking cable? It is also possible that the part of the iPod that charges the battery is faulty, or perhaps the battery itself. If it's a 4th gen iPod, the battery is located under the click wheel, more to the left side than to the right. I don't have a 5th gen "video" iPod, but based on the guide here
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-5th-Generation-Video/95
the battery appears to be toward the top of the iPod.
FYI - Here's the guide for the 4th gen iPod.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-4th-Generation/93
Whatever the problem, it appears to be related to charging the battery.
