IPod Doesn't Show up on Desktop or in iTunes

A friend is running Mac OS 10.4.
They are using an iPod that is one year old. However, it might be 1-3 years old.
It isn't showing up on their desktop or in iTunes.
What might a possible remedy for this?
Best,
Evan Jacobs

A reset is just rebooting the iPod. You will not lose anything and can be done without a computer...
Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
If it doesn't work the first time, give it a second or third go. Sometimes it takes a few/several tries.
See this thread as an example of what I mean by needing to try it many times...

Ipod doesn't show all the songs listed in Itunes even after sync is complete

I'm going through the same thing, I've tried de-authorizing and re-authorizing my computer and that seems to help. I haven't gotten all my songs back yet, but I've got about 75% of it back.

  • Ipod won't show up on desktop or in itunes, but disk utility recognizes it

Here's one i've been trying to figure out for a while. i have an old 3g (at least, i think that's what it is...black and white display and clickwheel) ipod that I've only been using as an external hard drive for the last year or two. So, there's only one album on it and the rest of the info is back ups of documents. For whatever reason, when i plug in the ipod using firewire, i get the "do not disconnect" screen on the ipod, and itunes opens. But, the ipod does not show up in itunes or on my desktop (as it should, in disk mode). If i disconnect the ipod, i get the "you disconnected a device without removing it" pop up. One more thing, in Disk Utility, it recognizes my ipod as being there....same if i go into my "about this mac" screen and look under the firewire port. Any suggestions? I don't want to lose the information, if at all possible.

I have the same problem -- my iPod (first-gen nano) says "use iTunes to restore" in several languages, and doesn't do anything. I can see it in disk utililty and in the system profiler USB list. Fine, I think, I'll just load all my music back on after I restore.
Whoops! Apple forgot that if your iPod doesn't show up in iTunes, you can't restore it any more! Even the kbase is out of date, because it tells you (as the final step) to use iTunes to restore the thing on the page about iTunes not recognizing it.
If I reformat in Disk Utility, will my iPod be permanently damaged? Because that's looking like the last thing I'll be able to do, now that Apple has dropped standalone updaters...

  • IPod connects and charges, but now doesn't show up on desktop or in iTunes

I've seen numerous threads/topics about iPods not connecting/showing up...and most say to reset, but if i can't even get it to show up in iTunes in order to reset how do I go about this?? Also, if I reset, am I losing all my music/worked saved on it??
I plug it in and it flashes like normal when its connected on the iPod screen, but it doesnt show up on the desktop or pop up in iTunes.
    thanks in advance!

  • My iPod doesn't show up on "My Computer" or iTunes and it doesn't sync or charge. Help please?

I have an iPod Classic, the 2nd most recent version. I havn't had problems with it until a week ago. Before I had the new iTunes update, a week ago, it wouldn't show up in my Device's or "My Computer"  , wont sync and It wouldn't charge either. I thought to myself "Maybe I should update my iTunes, maybe thats why it's not working". I updated my iTunes library to the most recent software last night thinking it would help but... It didn't help at all and made things much more complicated. I don't like how the new iTunes navigates and the iTunes Helper isn't there now. I'm still facing the problem where it doesn't show up in iTunes AND it doesn't show up on "My Computer" AND still doesn'tt sync but the thing thats different is that it'll charge a quarter bit and say it's done, or it wont charge at all and stay on my home screen. I need help here. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If it does not even turn on
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My ipod doesn't show when i plug it into itunes

I just bought the new ipod nano and it was working fine when I got it. I tried plugging it in to charge it but it didn't show in my itunes or in my computer. I've done everything the website has told me to from reinstalling itunes to resetting my ipod. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions???

I noticed the same thing this weekend. I received an iPod nano for my birthday (August 25th), I've added songs, removed songs, etc for almost a month. However this weekend (right after updating to iTunes 7.4.2.4, my computer can no longer see my iPod, and iTunes doesn't see it either. When I perform a diagnostic, I get the "No IEEE 1394 Host Controller found". All my USB ports are working, and my computer's recognizing all my other USB devices.
Electrical power is obviously getting to my iPod through the USB port because it not only shows that it's charging, but the iPod's screen lights up whenever it's connected or disconnected. The computer just doesn't acknowledge it's presence (nor does iTunes). Another odd thing is that iPod will continue to play music as it's connected. Before (when things were working) it would stop playing music and display the "Do Not Disconnect" screen.
I saw a thread somewhere that suggested editing registries, but I'm going to hold off on that. I'm not as skilled in that area and I don't want to break anything.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the recent iTunes update? Everything was working fine until I upgraded to iTunes 7.4.2.4.

  • Older iPod doesn't show podcasts when syncing with new iTunes

Although I have had my older iPod for approximately 7 years, I have never had any problems with it until this latest iTunes update. Since the update, I my podcasts are not showing up on the iPod. When I click on "sync" it completes almost immediately (in the past it has taken time for my weekly podcasts to transfer). I think this might have something to do with the new podcast app organization that is used with my iPhone and newer devices that utilizes aps. However, I use my iPod for my daily commute, and if I can't find my podasts to listen to, I am going to be VERY disappointed in Apple's latest change. I am hoping that there is an answer to this problem, but am afraid my old iPod may be be in the process of becoming outdated...
Yes, I did scroll through my albums and artists to see if I could find the podcasts, but without success (unless I am just looking in the wrong place).
Help!! Has anyone else experienced and/or resolved this issue?
    Thanks!

*[iPod Missing in My Computer or iTunes for Windows|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369]*
    *[Ipod not recognized properly|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538]*
If you can't see the ipod in disk management or the device manager, before you connect the ipod, open itunes, select edit/preferences, leave this window open and click on show desktop. This will make itunes busy. Then connect the ipod, and try the above help pages.

You cannot update it if you can't get the latest version of iTunes. Actually, the latest version of iTunes will run in XP if you have Service Pack 2. Also, you posted in the iPad forum, and your profile shows you have an iPad, but in your post, you say it is an iPod. Is it an iPad or an iPod?

  • IPod Doesn't Show Up in iTunes or My Computer, But Says It's Connected

I'm running Windows Vista (something I highly regret ever getting), and I was given a new iPod by a friend, and since it was a different iPod than I used before, Vista kept popping a window up when I connected it asking if I wanted to download a driver. It had three options, I think, to browse for the driver, look later, or never ask again. Normally I would click the first two, and the iPod would show up in iTunes still (and the iPod doesn't even need a driver). The last time, I accidentally clicked for it to not ask again, and now the iPod doesn't show up in either My Computer or iTunes.
I really, REALLY hate this computer. Vista has caused nothing but problems, I tell ya. It's always one thing after another.

  • Ipod doesn't show in itunes, vista installed, also, thinks it's syncing...

I really don't know what to put for a subject! Itunes and my ipod shuffle ran perfectly under Windows XP. I have a LOT of music successfully loaded (from itunes purchases and my own cds) on the 'pod. It plays fine. Problem is, computer bit the dust. I decided to upgrade to Vista instead of reloading XP (couldn't find the **** CDs to reinstall XP). Now, my ipod doesn't show up in itunes and I get that **** "ipod is synced with another library.. do you want to erase this ipod and sync with "this" itunes lib." box. "This" itunes library consists only of songs I've purchased from itunes.... none of the cd music is there. and the only option that itunes seems to be giving me is to blow away what's on my 'pod now and install the tiny library of itunes purchases. The wierd thing is, it's all on the same **** computer... just the OS changed (from XP to Vista).
What I WAMT to do is somehow get itunes to see my 'pod and copy the music that's on my pod back into itunes where it all came from in the first place and put my latest itunes purchases (since changing OS's) on my 'pod. Jeeze. sounds so simple. Unbelieveable.
    tk
    TIA for any help.
HP Pavilion 523n   Other OS   running Vista

In iTunes, go to the File Menu and select the 'Add to Library' option.
In the window that appears navigate to the folder that has all the music from the old version of iTunes (i.e. where the music is currently stored on your computer), and select the folder.
This should then add all the music back into your iTunes (it may make a copy)
You will now be able to connect your iPod and let it sync to the computer.
