IPod doesn't sleep: "Charged" screen persists

I've had my iPod for well over two years now with no problems.
Until last week.
After shutting down the computer I grabbed my iPod and noticed the charged icon (little green battery in the upper right corner) was still present. This was with no power to the compy now. So I unhook it, play a song, and turn it off.
But it doesn't turn off... if I hold down the play/pause button, it will sleep, but as soon as I let my finger off the button, the Charged screen comes up (big green battery in the middle of the screen).
I've reset, restored, and even updated to newer iPod software (now it's at 1.2.1), left it on the wall charger all night, and still the issue persists.
What's worse is the screen slowly drains the battery and when the charged icon is there (little battery in the upper right corner), it won't be recognized by any PC USB port.
Has anybody else had this problem and what should I do?

Have you first done a reset? The followed by a Restore if the reset does work?
After that, next thing to check is the dock connector on the bottom of your iPod. Dirt, debris, sweat, etc. on the dock connector pins can cause shorts that will fool the iPod into thinking it is connected and charging. So inspect the bottom connector for damage of bits of things stuck to it. You might also try cleaning the connector gently with a small brush or lint free cloth.

  • Ipod stuck on red charge screen

    Hi,
i have a 3g 8gb mc ipod touch that worked well for 1 year and a half but now
    it is stuck on the red charge screen if it is connected with the usb cable to a power source else it is dead;
it isn't really stuck, when i press the home or the power button or i connect it, it shows the screen but after 10 seconds the screen goes black again.
the ipod is out of warranty
i can't get it in recovery, dfu or else--> i can't restore it.
Thanks in advance for the answers
    Francesco

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Screen shows dim 'charged' icon - ipod doesn't sleep properly

I am having the same issue as described in the thread below and see no answer there. I can fully charge my ipod and it plays, etc. fine. When I try to put it to sleep, it goes black for a second and the comes back to dim with the "charged" icon on the display. When I am playing a song, the upper right shows that the Ipod is plugged in even though it is not. If I leave it unplugged overnight, the battery is completely dead. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Put iPod Touch to sleep from screen

I use my iPod Touch in a portable music player called the iMainGo. The device does not allow easy access to the sleep/on-off button on the top of the iPod. Does any one know an application that I could use to put the iPod to sleep from the screen?

    - Are you also having problems with the Home button?  Maybe it is sticking a little since to take a screen shot you depress the Home and Power/Sleep buttons at the same time.
    - I have not seen your problem discussed here before.
    - I would first try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next would be to restore the iPod via iTunes.  First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • IPod doesn't stay charged

I charge my iPod touch and it doesn't keep a charge when not in use. Does this mean I need a new battery?

You posted to the wrong area of discussions. This is the 5th Generation iPod group (the video full sized iPods that were released previous to the "Classic" models). If you are asking a Nano question, you want to post to this area...

  • Ipod touch stuck on charging screen

I have an ipod touch that will not turn on. I am not sure what software version it is running because I cannot check it. I bought it for my niece and it has been stuck like this for some months now. I am just getting the opportunity to get home and check it.
    Here is what is happening:
    1. Stuck on the screen with a charging icon (plugged it in to several power sources and it still will not turn on)
    2. Plugged it into itunes and it is not being recognized (Tried to put it in DFU mode. Software downloaded but it does not complete the process. I get an error 2001 error) (did this by holding the power key for 10 seconds, then the home key for 10 seconds simultaneously, then let go of power button until I seen an option to restore)
    3. I am using itunes 10.5.1
I have checked several forums and people suggest the restore, and I have attempted this several times. Reset my MacBook Pro which has software version 10.6.8. Any other suggestions?

Thank you for taking out the time to write any suggestions. I looked to the link, but still no success. I have tried to do the restore on 3 different computers (deskstop, Macbook Pro, Laptop). Still no success. In fact, I am also getting an error 1602. When the device is not plugged in, it does not come on at all. As stated, I have attempted to plug it in to numerous power sources.
I have done the restore countless times prior to the issue on other iDevices so I am pretty sure that I am doing it properly. The device will not reboot at all. I have held both buttons for countless minutes and no action is happening. The only time anything happens on the device is when it is plugged in. I get a battery signal and no matter how long it stays plugged in, it does not turn on or show an increase in the battery.

  • 4th Gen iPod doesn't sleep?

my 4th gen 20g iPod (with color screen and click wheel)
will play like a normal ipod and everything else, however, when i want it to sleep and save battery power it doesnt do this. Even if i hold down play for like 30 seconds and select the "Sleep" menu option off of the main menu. it just sits there and just keeps going, this is quite frustrating please offer some insight people thanks!

    Hi, thanks for the response.
Yes, I did try the 5 R's a few times without much success, it seems.
And I did research the (-69) error message which on the site says,
"This error occurs when iTunes tries to send files to your iPod, but a file (or files) is unusable (something is wrong with it."
But like I said, I'm confused as to why one iPod would be happy with the files but my other one wouldn't. I've tried choosing random songs to put on the iPod (thinking maybe my first song in my library is corrupted) but no songs seem to load. The other error message I get is "The required file cannot be found". But why can my other iPods find them?

  • Hİ My ipad's screen is black. When it  take charge, I can hear sound but still black. I press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds but this doesn't work. Screen still black! PLS HELP ME!

How long did you let it charge? It may take 30 minutes before the iPad responds when the battery is completely drained. Let it charge for at least 30 minute using the wall charger. Then rest the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
If the iPad restarts let it continue to charge until the battery is 100%.
If the iPad still does not start make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Ipod screen is blank and ipod has been fully charged??

My sons iPod has been fully charged but will not turn on and/or screen is blank like it is off.

Have you tried a hard reset to see if that can help your iPod boot up? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  This may take a couple of tries.

  • Since itunes 2.0.4 has been downloaded. My ipod doesn't synchronize properly/ at all.The LED screen shows  "copy 1 or 2 from 101" and it will remain like that. It looks like sync but there's nothing to happen. It doesn't stop by it self. How to solve?

Since itunes 2.0.4 has been downloaded my ipod doesn't synchronize properly/ at all. The LED screen shows çopying 1 or 2 from 101' and itt will remain like that.
It looks like sync but nothing is happening. The sync doesn't stop by itself. Is there anybody to solve this problem? In previous versions never a problem.

I have exactly the same issues with my new 80G iPOD. I have found that when connecting to my PC, the iPOD does not start iTUNES 7. This can be resolved by stopping the iPOD Service in Computer Management, connecting the iPOD and then starting it again. Then when you start iTUNES it finds the iPOD. - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Seems like a stupid long-winded way to do things, but at least you can get some stuff on to your iPOD.
As far as using Restore goes - I just get the restoring iPOD message you described, which it blatantly isn't :((
