IPod Empty?

I bought a new iPod (ipod nano third generation)today in the city.
It was running perfectly. No Problems
Then i went home, connected it to my Computer (Windows XP PRO)
I installed iTunes (Newest version), how it was written.
I Tunes opend a warning messages: "I Tunes has detected an iPod in waitingposition. You need to restore the iPod, before it can be used with iTunes (together)."
So i pressed "OK"
Then i used the only option i had:
The "restore" button
Then a message appeared:
Something like "Do you really want to load the factory settings? All Titels and Files will be deleted and the newest iPod-software version will be installed."
I had the choice between "cancel" and "Restore & Update"
I chose "Restore & Update"
It worked nicely and no error appeared. ... after a while it finished.
Then a message again: "Your iPod has now succesfully loaded the factory settings and is restarting now. Please don't disconnect the iPod from your computer. As soon as the iPod is restarted it will be displayed in the Source section."
This window closed itself after few seconds.
So I think, all right but ...
Message again:
"I Tunes has detected an ipod in waiting position. You need to restore the iPod, before it can be used with iTunes (together)."
And on my iPod was a message again "Do not disconnect.", which don't want to disapear since 1 hour.
So i did everything again ... Nothing happens at first but then ... My iPod was completly empty. With Empty i mean that there were absolotly no files in my directory, not even any software.
I restart it manual like its written by apple.com, i turned it off,on.
Another message appeared: "Use iTunes to restore."
So i di the same again...
nothing ... its allready empty.
I try to call an Support service but it's closed at this time. So i want to try it here.
I hope someone can say me what i can do. Because it's not the first time i used a computer or iTunes or an iPod, but it never happends to me before. I have no idear what i have done wrong. I'm sure i do everything right

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive

  • My itunes capacity bar is nearly full but ipod empty

I have just updated to Itunes 8 and then when i plugged my ipod touch in to update it the capacity bar in itunes has turned all orange and has also wiped all the songs from my touch. A message then appears saying there is not enough space to sync (even though ipod is empty).
Have tried to sync manually to no avail and have also reset the ipod.
Any ideas how i can fix this problem?

You might get a quicker answer to this by posting in the iPod Touch forum where other users might have some experience they can share: Discussions - Connecting iPod Touch to Windows

  • Ipod empty now, can i restore!?

so when i booted from osx to xp there was a problem and the ipod ended up empty from what i can tell.
but when i look at the info, osx tells me there are 73gb used and 2 gb available!!!
is it possible to restore the ipod??? that would make me so utterly happy. no i dont have the tracks saved on my comp so i need some luck here......

You could try resetting your iPod, and that might bring the Music on your iPod back to viewing. (Resetting an iPod doesn't delete the content off of it, or usually doesn't).
    To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a few times (leave it oin the white side of the switch).
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
This might take a few tries, but this is probably your best shot at possibly bringing your songs back.

  • Help: Windows freezes and iPod empty

Last night (UK) I posted a message considering the problem that My Computer, iTunes and iPod Updater don't recognise my iPod ANYMORE (so it did before).
Now, even worse, when I plug in my iPod Windows XP freezes. My iPod cannot be properly disconnected. When I do so, the iPod gets stuck on "don't disconnect." It takes a long time, before the iPod recognises it's not longer connected to the computer and it loads Menu. However, every file on it is gone (and I cant reload or update it, since my PCI doesnt recognised it anymore).
Strangely, my iPod Info says that there is just about 20 gig of free space in it. Although there are no files on it anymore.
So what is failing: my computer or my iPod???
    Any help welcome!

Since the iPod seems to be recognised on other comps then it does sould as if the problem is with the comp rather than the iPod itself.
Make sure the iPod is fully charged before you start.
Try creating a new user account on the comp which won't recognise the iPod and use that account.
Go through the apple 5R's, be sure to uninstall iTunes and the iPod software with the iPod disconnected from the comp and when you reinstall do so with the iPod disconnected and only connect the iPod when the software prompts you to do so or after the install has completed. You might like to reboot the PC after you've uninstalled the iTunes and iPod software and reboot again after you've completed the reinstall. Follow apple's instructions to the letter.
If you still don't get it to work you will need to consider reinstalling XP and starting over with a clean install.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ipod emptied, Itunes crashing

A couple of days ago after a normal update I turned on my Ipod to discover no songs of any kind listed within it, so I went back to sync it again, only for it to cause my Itunes to crash completely! Its been doing this ever since, and whiles't I've been working my way through the other help topics, starting in disk mode, reinstalling Itunes, working my way through the Itunes does not show up in Windows segment, along with changing the file name, but nothing seems to be working. I figured my best bet would be to wipe the Ipod, but I dont know how to do this without going through Itunes (although it does sometimes cause it to crash aswell, I can still access my pod through explorer).
Any ideas would be much apreciated!

I've Got The Same Problem Too
It Says It's Full, But With Nothing? :S & It Deleted All My Music
I Connect My iPod & It Says 'Connected' But In My Computer It's Nowhere To Be Seen... & iTunes Says Its Not Responding So I Can't Fix It

  • IPod empty when disconnected?

Hi there- I have a 60GB iPod... I went to use it this morning and just about had a heart attack because none of my 4,000 odd songs were showing up... HOWEVER, when I later connected my iPod to my laptop/iTunes, all the songs are still there and play fine. I ejected the iPod from iTunes and properly disconnected, only to see, yet again, that non of the songs show up...
Is there any way to troubleshoot this without completely erasing my songs? (I'm one of those not-so-smart people that doesn't have a backup of my library, as you can tell...)

ok, i just fixed it (well, temporarily, anyway, ha)
first, disconnect you iPod and turn it off...
press the menu button, hold it, and immediately press and hold the select button at the same time for approx. 6-10 seconds... you should see the apple logo come up for a little bit, and then your main menu will come up again.
I checked my songs, and there were all there. hope that helps.

  • HELP!!  Device corrupt - not recognized - iPod empty

I'll try and make this as simple as possible.
I just finished downloading a few new CDs. I plugged in my iPod and it tells me there is new software to install and download. Okay, I say to go ahead and do that. Then it tells me the device is corrupt. It offers to then restore to factory settings, thus wiping out my entire iPod. I chose NOT to do that.
Then I looked at the iPod and it is totally blank. No songs, no playlists, nothing. I keep trying and the same thing. I finally tell it to restore.
Basically, has this ever happened to anyone, and then what happens? such as, so I just plug in the iPod and start to sync it from scratch (I could not choose Sync from the File menu as it was not highlighted - I tried)?
Thanks so much. I am so frustrated right now!!

If you tried other good cables then it appears that you have an iPod problem and an appointmnent at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • New hard drive, 2 Ipods, Empty Library

My hard drive crashed.  I got a new one, and just downloaded Itunes again.  I now have 2 Ipods.  I can not figure out how to sync my stuff from my Ipods to the library.  Also, can I combine the two Ipods into one library?

No, it's not hopeless. Buy a 3rd-party ipod manager. itunes will not do what you need.

  • IPod empty, still showing used space

So after disconnecting my ipod after charging/adding songs, it shows ther is no music within despite there being ~120GB of used space. When I connect to iTunes it says "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "OWNER'S IPO".
Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings."
Is there any way to recover what's on there, or am I screwed?

Some of the tools require a working iPod database which, in your case, I suspect has been corrupted. I've successfully helped out friends using the manual recovery method mentioned towards the end which doesn't rely on the library.

  • IPod empty but using 56.4 MB of space?

I plugged in my iPod to my PC. It erased everything on the iPod (I only had music) and says that all that space is already used! No wonder it says it is full way before the advertised capacity (when it is working). What is this phantom space waster?

56.4MB is nothing compared to the overall capacity of 5th generation iPods. This space is occcupied by the iPod software and other essential bits of information required for the iPod to work.

  • Ipod Empty yet only 515MB out of 55.6GB available (PLEASE HELP)!!

I was puzzeled that I only had 119 songs on my Ipod yet it continued to warn me that it was full and could add a book or another song without cutting back. I do not have any videos, pictures, games or other on it but it is almost full??? Any ideas?? I am getting ready to take a trip and really want to download some books.

use windows explorer and list the properties for the IPOD drive (while connected) and verify the free space and also look at the structure: folders and files (although the file names are weird) you can see their sizes (make sure that you enable in options to see hidden files & folders), that should give you an indication of what is taking all your space
