Ipod files wiped out

This is the first time this has happened to any of our 4 ipods in the household. His ipod was wiped clean and now it no longer appears in the source list when plugged back into the computer. In fact, the entire itunes screen just freezes up when we plug it in, and it immediately unfreezes when we unplug the ipod from the usb cord. Here is exactly what happens:
1) Plus in ipod to usb cord
2) Says "Connected" with yellow circle and rotating arrow on ipod screen, but itunes screen is frozen and ipod does not come up source list
3) In order to unfreeze screen, we unplug ipod from usb cord.
4) Pop-up screen immediately -- Says "itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod. Go to the Summary tab in ipod preferences and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings."
5) Click OK -- goes to Summary tab. The "name" shown is simply "ipod", which is strange since my son had his ipod named with his first name to distinguish it from the others in the house. However, the serial number shown on this summary page is correct.
6) Click "restore" button. Pop-up asks if I am sure -- Click Restore.
7) A screen pops up that states "Extracting software", then immediately switches to another screen that says "The ipod 'ipod' could not be restored. Error 1415"
This is where we have been stuck for the past 10 days. Nothing has worked and my son's ipod is completely wiped clean; no songs, no TV shows, nothing. The actual itunes library on our computer is still full of our purchases, and the music plays when a song is clicked on. I have gone through the technical articles on the website, but I just would like to know...is this ipod just shot? Is it just time to purchase a new one? Does it seem like it just ran its course and it needs a good and just burial?
Thanks,
Wade

After plugging in my ipod classic to charge and change up my playlist mix all seemed fine until I unplugged it. When I went to start to play my new mix all of my files except my photos were gone. None of my settings changed and when i checked with my friends there were some music files on their ipods that got wiped as well.. What is going on?!
There's no way I can get some of my music back that I have since my one computer stolen awhile ago and all my music I have bought from itunes and my cd's are now gone. What gives!?

  • Shuffle iPod-songs wiped out...PLEASE ADVISE/HELP

    Hi,
I have an iPod Shuffle which contained numerous songs. I was going to update it and apparently hit something that wiped out all of my songs. Is there any way to get them to come back up and replace them in my iPod or am I just out of luck and have to buy new songs? The songs are listed in my purchase history.
Thanks in advance for your help and speedy response as I am lost w/out it when I jog!

I was going to update it and apparently hit something that wiped out all of my songs.
If the songs are no longer on your iPod or your computer, your options are limited.
Apple's policy is clear: iTS purchases can be downloaded only once. It is your responsibility to make back-ups . (For most people, this will involve either CD's/DVD's or an external drive .)
That being said, at their discretion they have made one-time exceptions to this policy. You can ask for an exception by submitting the form on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/
Good Luck! But whatever the response from Apple, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up!

  • Ipod Touch Wiped out

My son allowed a neighbor kid to attempt to update his ipod touch.  Instead, she wiped out everything!  Is there anyway to get it back the way it used to be?  All apps, and games he had are gone.
BTW it is a 16 GB 4th gen.

If he has a backup, restore from backup. There can be either or both an iCloud backup and a backup that iTunes makes when syncing to a comuter.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Ipod 4 wiped out? I plugged it in to my work computer (used strictly for charging - home computer is where my files are updated) - but today it erased my ipod! Everything is gone

I plugged it in to my work computer (used strictly for charging - home computer is where my files are updated) - but today it erased my ipod! Everything is gone! It is asking me set-up questions (Language, country) and asking me to plug it in & go to ITUNES - problem is, my itunes icon is not working? It usually loads as soon as I plug the Ipod in but not today? I can take it home & plug it in & hopefully my files will come back but why is it doing this? (I've had it more than a year & it's never done this?)

It sounds like a setting change on the computer and iTunes synced the iPod. Yo can only sync with one iTunes library, if yo switch the iPod gets erased and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the computer.
Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and make sure that the box that says "Prevent iPods.. syncing automatically" is checked.

  • Ipod totally wiped out but still has the name I named it

My sister plugged in her iPod onto the G4 kast night and this morning all the music has gone. It still had its name that i gave it and so i thought maybe it'd be okay. But the About bit says it has 36GB free so i guess not!! I read an article saying that the new iTunes deleted mp3s randomly. I had better back up mine now. Has this every happened to anyone? And is there a way of getting the music from the iPod back?
    Thank you!!

Unless the songs are still on your iPod (check, scroll through the artists/playlists etc and see if any are there) or backed up somewhere, you're out of luck.
I read an article somewhere a while ago about a program that can 'recover' lost files on iPods and hard disks, however I can't remember what it was called! Bummer!

However, after this happened, I found that all the music and videos that I had synced from my computer were missing. The ones that I downloaded straight from the iPad itself are still there. Anyone experienced the same problem?

  • HT1329 My hard drive died.  Can I plug my ipod into the new computer and transfer my files or will they be wiped out?

My computer hard drive fried on Friday.  They are not able to retrieve the data.   Have i lost everything that was not a download?
Can i plug in my iPod into the new computer (once I install iTunes and authorize the computer) and move my files to the new system from the iPod, or will my iPod be wiped out?
I believe I need to set up manual update, rather than automatic to prevent this, but other than that, I am a bit lost.
    Thank you.

  • Update wiped out my ipod name and recognition

I updated to 12.1 today and the extraction of my old files wiped out the driver for my ipod,  Windows reinstalled but it's now showing as simply Apple iPod not its alias.   ITUNES now can't recognise it.  If I rename the device will that make iTunes recognise it and if so which is the simplest process?
We have 2 other iPods in the house and the are fine, the one that lost its identity was the first. I connected to sync.
I have spent hours trying to work  this out.
I am not game to delete the drivers in case it causes the other 2 to fail.
Anyone got some non technical ideas?

Are the other iPods that work iPod touches (or iPhones or iPads)? iOS devices like iPod touches use additional drives to those used by "dumb" iPods.

  • Everything on iPod wiped out...now podcasts not updating

A couple days ago I had wanted to add an episode of a podcast to my iPod but wasn't on my XP account. It had downloaded to the XP account I was on, so I figured it would be easier to just update from there instead of logging off and waiting 5 minutes to log onto my account so all the antivirus stuff could load. So I plugged my iPod in and dragged the podcast episode to my iPod in the Source column (it's updated manually). Without warning, iTunes wiped out everything that had been on my iPod and started replacing it with everything on this particular iTunes library. I panicked and quickly unplugged my now empty iPod. I haven't been able to recover any of my songs except some of the podcasts. I downloaded Recover My Files, and it found a good number of the songs, but a) many have been overwritten (whatever that means) and b) it wanted me to pay 70 dollars for an activation code (first time is supposed to be free). Ever since my iPod was wiped out, iTunes has not updated the podcasts, so I manually downloaded the episodes I missed and added them to my library on my XP account. I dragged them to my iPod, and iTunes wiped out every podcast I had salvaged and left just the two I manually downloaded.
    So,
    1. Is there any hope for me to recover my songs?
    2. Why is iTunes not updating my podcasts and wiping out my songs whenever I add new ones to iPod?
    Thanks
ETA: No, I didn't back up my music, it was one of those things I meant to do.

Will the podcasts that can't be found actually play in iTunes on the computer? For the message I would say they will not play because iTunes can't find the actual file.

  • I have an ipod touch that i first recieved in the united states, now i am currently residing in canada. my question is can i have an itunes account from both countries without wiping out all the songs and apps. on my ipod??

please help, i am wondering if i can have both an itunes account from the usa and canada on the same ipod without wiping out my music and apps.???

You can retain the apps and music for the USA account.  However, you can only use the iTunes store in the country you are physically located.  Thus, you can't update the USA purchased app when in Canada.  See the following too:

I have an ipod touch (4th gen) and just bought a clock/charger/player. It says I need ios 4.3. I keep getting a message saying I can download ios 6.? but that it will wipe everything off my ipod.  Is there any way to get the ios without wiping out my files?

There is no supported method to "downgrade" iOS on any device.  If you update, you will get the latest iOS for your device, which will be iOS 6.1.3.  You cannot go backwards to iOS 4.3
If you have never backed up in either iCloud or iTunes, then upgrading to iOS 6.1.3 will involve restoring your device as part of the upgrade.  Without a backup to restore from, you will loose everything that is on it.
You should first connect to iTunes with your computer, sync your device without upgrading and create an up to date backup of everything.  Then use the upgrade option in iTunes to update your iOS.
However, if the dock device strictly requires iOS 4.3, it will not work, as you cannot downgrade iOS.  There simply is no mechanism from Apple to do that.
