IPod filled up?

I have what I think is a 2nd generation 15 GB iPod. It has the four touch buttons on the top and the touch wheel. It was originally formatted on Windows. Anyway, so it said there were only 169 songs on it but it was taking up 8.6+ GB of music. So I deleted them off but then when I look at it, it says that there's still 8.6 GB taken up and so now I can't put all of my original songs that I had because it thinks it's filled up when really it isn't. This problem happened when I had to hold down the power button to shut off the computer because the computer crashed on me for some reason. When I rebooted it it said something about a .xml file being imported and it was damaged. So I decided to solve the problem later and I shut down the computer becuase I had other business to attend to. When I came back, I noticed that there were only 169 songs in my library instead of my original 2649. I went to File>Add to library and then imported all my songs from their locations. They play fine but it says that they won't fit on my iPod. Even under the "About" section on the iPod, it says that it has 8.6+ GB of stuff on it. What's wrong with it? I would like to be able to play music on my MP3 player! If reformatting is the only answer, I would like to know how.

I have a similar proble. my 4gb mini says it's totally full but i only had 2.5gb worth of music in i-tunes? i've just gone out and bought a new 20GB i-pod and after uploading some music i-tunes says that there is 2.98GB worth of music but the new ipod shows 6.20GB of storage used! any ideas why?

P.S - This applies to all versions of Itunes I've used. I've just updated to itunes 8 and it's still the same.

Yea. Depending on how the songs are imported into itunes, they can vary in size. It has to do with how much compression you want. Most people are fine with using better quality mp3 files. If you change the import setting in the general tab, future imports will be much smaller. So to do this
    In Itunes,
    hit Command-,
Click Import Settings button in the window that pops up
Change the "Import Using" to MP3 Encoder. If you want the smallest files, choose the good quality setting under the "Setting"
Now, you can make the files in your library smaller by right clicking the files and choosing "create mp3 version"
Then delete the larger versions. Make sure that the files sound ok before you delete the larger versions... If they don't, change the "setting" from good to high. Your ipod should now not fill up as fast !

  • IPod filling w/o reason

It seems as if every time I sync my iPod iTunes tells me my iPod is full. This simply could not be possible as I only have approximately 185 songs taking up 757 MB. I have had this problem in the past and users have told me to reset the factory settings on my iPod, which has worked. But it seems a little bit of a hassle to reset factory settings and then load all of my songs onto the iPod each and everytime I try and re-sync. This is somewhat puzzling to me. I have no files, pictures, nor any contacts on the iPod. Is there anything that I'm doing wrong that automatically fills up my iPod everytime?

    auto sync fills it automaticlly,

  • IPod fills itself up with mysterious data, 100MB every 5-6 seconds continuously until empty

My iPod touch 5th generation (32GB) has enough data on it to have 18GB left over as free space. However, with a bug/misfeature in iOS, it, without the downloading of any additional data, will slowly fill itself up with about 100MB every 5-6 seconds. I can see this when I open and close the About section of the Settings and watch 17.9GB reduce to 17.8GB and having it notify me later that I have 0 bytes free on my iOS device.
This happens multiple times a day and I recently did a restore (as suggested by an Apple Support rep for another problem) and the issue still persists.
Is this problem common? If so, will I have to deal with it or is there something I can do about it?
    Any answer appreciated!

The data is "Other" according to iTunes on my Mac. I actually did a test of this last month and screenshots of my usage page are below with 1 minute between each:

  • 160 GB iPod Filling up - Now  what?

I had the bright idea to load my CD collection on iPods to get rid of the bulk - but with only the discs for Adams -  Bach, I have more than 10.000 "songs" (each track counts as one) and the iPod will surely be full long before I complete through Mozart, much less start on Opera, Country & Western, Christmas or Pop.
I wouldn't mind having another iPod or two for the lyrical and non-classical music, but I can't figure out how to split the "library" item "Music" into two or three folders, each with its own iPod, e.g., "Classical" - "Opera" - "Modern" . . .
Anyone found a way to do this?

With an iPod connected, click the iPod name and then the Music tab, and you will see that "Sync Music" has an option for "Selected playlists..."
After you have sorted the music you want into playlists, this option lets you put it onto that iPod.
If you have multiple iPods, each is managed independently by the same method.

  • Restore Ipod - not working?

When I plug my ipod into my pc it's saying that the ipod is in recovery mode and i order to use it I have to restore it.
No problem with that so follow the icons to restore it and complete that.
The status bar on the ipod fills and the ipod restarts. When it reconnects with the pc I get the same message - that I have to restore the ipod, which I did but still the same.
I also tried resetting the ipod using the menu and select buttons together - this had no effect either.
Can anyone advise if there is anything further I can do?
Many thanks for you help guys,
    Rich

Many thanks, had the same problem and now all working perfectly.
Shame the iTunes troubleshooting doesn't provide the same level of help. By the time I had found this discussion area I had already wiped my iPod memory and wasted hours following the 5Rs.

  • Purchased new music, now old music won't show on iPod but still takes space

    Hello,
My girlfriend has a problem on her iPod Touch. It was loaded with about 9GB of music (mostly CD rips, a few itunes purchases). Now she purchased 28 songs from the store, and sent them to the iPod (her iTunes is set up to manually manage songs and videos). But now only the 28 new songs appear on the iPod; the others are missing. But the space that was taken up by those songs, is still taken up, and is shown as "Other" instead of "Audio". If she tries to send the old songs to the iPod again, the songs starts being transferred, but the "Other" capacity stays the same, and so the iPod fills up before the transfer is completed, and 9 GB are wasted. How can she fix this? Is a total restore needed? I hope not!
    Thanks in advance,
    Cristian

    Hi,
This situation can occur occasionally with no specific cause.
Unfortunately, a restore is the only way to fix it.
I have only encountered this problem once myself and I'm fairly sure it was because I was a little clumsy when plugging in the cable connector, not square on. Just a thought.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • Problem syncing ipod classic

my ipod classic, which i have had for 3 and a haf years, has recently had problems syncing the stuff on my itunes to my ipod
at first i re set my ipod & started up again which didnt take to long or take up too much room
however the last 2 weeks its has taken over 2 hours to sync 1 podcast from itunes to ipod which really isnt good enough,
also i have recently been getting my ipod filled up with an "other" section, which takes up loads of room, no leaving any for songs or videos
anyone else got a similar problem to me that could help me out or at least tell me what im doing wrong?

I don't know what's wrong with your ipod, but I have the same problem. I have however discovered how to stop the sync process once it freezes. Once you know it is frozen, click the stop button in the sync boxt at the top (several times). Then put the computer on standby. This sometimes takes a few minutes because the Itunes is using all the resources. Then wait until the ipod disconnects, resets itself and starts up. You can bring the computer out of standby. When itunes starts again - takes a few minutes, it will stop the sync and you can safely remove the ipod. This is the only way I've been able to get music on the ipod for the past 3 weeks. I never had any problems like this before. I have a 160 gig classic that is over a year old.

  • Ipod- questions!: photography sharing and av out slideshow.

    g'day y'all.
sorry for the long post- but i would love some answers and i want to explain fully what i am doing....
sorry also for the multiple posts...
I am a professional photographer down here in australia.
I use Mac's exclusively and i love my 60 gig iPod photo.
I use it for showing clients my work when i visit them at their houses/offices.
I just plug in the ipod with the av cables into whatever TV they have around and do a slide show-
I have pre-loaded a bunch of different albums and a bunch of different playlists, mix and match them to the clients taste... and bam-
    they love it.
and i don't have to carry stacks of albums around etc.
    I love it.
I now have a new concept i want to market to my new wedding clients.
I am really excited about it.
--get all your wedding pictures {about 300 to 400 of them} on your own new iPod!--
so that leads to a few questions:
a} would the new iPod nano - 4 gig - be big enough?
    - is the iPod nano able to do a AV slideshow out to a TV?
    b} would i be considered an apple reseller? {if so what's involved in that??}
c} how would i go loading the pics and some cleared music onto a new iPod from my computer and then giving that to another person-
how would they go if they hooked it up to their computer?
d} is this fantastic idea doable?
and what do i have to do for it??
    thanks everyone.

    Here goes :-
a} would the new iPod nano - 4 gig - be big enough?
It should be big enough if you are just going to use it for photos and some background music. Although you may want to include the 'originals' of the photos so the client can access them on a computer. That will of course take more room especially if you have a high megapixel camera.
    - is the iPod nano able to do a AV slideshow out to a TV?
No it is not and that might be the thing that spoils your whole idea, unless you are OK using the 20GB iPod with colour screen which does output to a TV just like your 60GB.
    b} would i be considered an apple reseller? {if so what's involved in that??}
I would not think so and in effect the new owners would have to come back to you for warranty claims and then you would need to process the claim as your own.
c} how would i go loading the pics and some cleared music onto a new iPod from my computer and then giving that to another person-
how would they go if they hooked it up to their computer?
Well you own the copyright to the photos so there is no problem with that. the music is another issue, if it is copyright material then you would be breaking the law as you would be in effect selling copies. If you use non copyright music made for these types of things the you should be OK. For the client to access the photos on a computer you need to make sure you select the 'Include originals' option in iTunes > iPod preferences, so that the actual photo files are copied on to the iPod in a folder.
d} is this fantastic idea doable?
    Yes it's id doable.
and what do i have to do for it??
Buy iPods, fill with photos and music taking into account the above.

  • Lost photos on iMac and iPod

Just got a new iMac and I lost all photos on the external drive. However, my photos on the iPod are also missing. Is there any software out there to find the photos on the ipod and import them to the iMac..Thanks

I too have lost all my photos. On my return from an o/seas holiday, with an ipod filled with over 1000 photos and video clips, I attempted to download to my computer and without thinking (and jetlagged) clicked on yes to reformat my ipod. As soon as I realised what was happening I pulled the plug, but unfortunately lost everything. Since ipods have a hard-drive (much like a computer), it may be possible to retreive deleted files. Or am I dreaming??

  • Trouble with 30GB ipod w/ video and trouble with itunes 7

here's the story: i just got a new ipod (the 30 GB with video). i got tired of my little shuffle with no screen.
so, i put my whole itunes library onto the ipod and everything was working fine. i loved it. then, i deleted some items from my itunes library on my laptop because it was taking up needed space on my hard drive, i figured this was fine, since i still have it on my ipod, and i can watch/listen to them anytime i want. But, when i went back later to put some new stuff on my ipod, 2 shows and 2 of my favorite podcast episodes were deleted from the ipod that i had put on before!
-i checked the manual, it said that i need to be in the manual mode instead of itunes/ipod automatically updating the ipod's library. i was transferring stuff manually, but it still got rid of some stuff on it's own.
the music was all still there, but a tv show episode, and 2 of my favorite video podcast episodes were deleted.
-Will this always be a problem everytime I hook it up to my laptop and want to add new stuff to my ipod? I don't even have half of the ipod filled. it says that I have 20Gb of free space.
i want to be able to keep stuff on my ipod that i will delete from my itunes library/hard drive. such as movies, tv shows, my favorite video podcast episodes. But at the same time, I want to be able to add new stuff. Is this Possible?? please help! is the ipod/itunes programmed to delete everything from the ipod that is not in the itunes library????

I figured it out myself: i chose the option manage manually.

  • IPod Classic Battery Question

I just recently got an iPod classic and before I bought it I did some research on it and the battery life is what really got me to get this particular one. It says that the battery last for 30 hours through music playback and 5 hours for movies, yet my iPod Classic barely made it through the school day. Is there something that I am doing, or not doing? Also is it true that the iPod Classic can play music for up 30 hours because that is what was said on CNET.com

First off the key words in the specification for battery like is UP TO 30 hours, meaning 30 hours is sort of an almost unachievable upper limit that under certain very specific conditions Apple was able to get that long. Conditions you and I are never likely to be able to duplicate and match.
Battery life is dependant on many things. How much you use and how bright you set the backlighting, what encoding you use for your music (AIFF songs eat up battery life faster), how much your drive has to spin up and be accessed, if you tend to let the iPod just play or if you are always jumping around to new songs, etc.
For super long battery life, you are basically looking at never using the backlight, using AAC or MP3 encoded songs that have a lower bit rate, and that you let the iPod fill the internal cache and play the songs in the order it plays them and never jump around to different songs. With the exception of the backlight, the other ones minimize disk drive access and extend battery life.
If on the other hand you have the backlight on a lot, watch a lot of videos, play games on the iPod, are constantly jumping around from song to song and artist to artist, your battery life will suffer.

  • HT1711 I recently deleted iTunes off my computer by accident, when I reinstalled it I got the new version and I can't figure out how to get my music to store on my iTunes to transfer from my iPhone to iTunes.

I recently deleted iTunes off my computer by accident, when I reinstalled it I got the new version and I can't figure out how to get my music to store on my iTunes to transfer from my iPhone to my iTunes.  I goal is to get my iPod filled with the music that I have stored on my iPhone and figured the only way to do so is to use iTunes as my transfer hub.  Any suggestions?

Wow you're kind of a iTunes bully.  Dude the reason I am asking for advice and help is I am completely computer ********.  If I knew the answer I wouldn't be asking.  Anyways.  Question to anyone else.
If I have no music on my iTunes at all and no music on my computer, hard drive or any other version of storage yet there is a playlist on my iPhone. While my iPhone is plugged into my PC and my iTunes is up, is there a way to swap my playlist from my iPhone to my iTunes?  Directly?  Without downloading some new media source or backing up my old media source from my history.  The reason everything was deleted (iTunes and media source) was due to the size of everything and space it was requiring.  I am simply trying to get 233 songs from A to B.
I have tried magic but it is not working.

there was some problem with my hardware?
    thanks a lot

    Welcome to the discussions,
if you connect your ipod to itunes and look at the colored info bar at the bottom of the window, does it show different colors or just one orange "other" part? As you got errors while syncing, there might be corrupt data files on your ipod filling it up. Try to restore again to get rid of the great orange part. After that the "other" section should be reduced to max. of 500MB or less.
