IPod Finally Updates to 1.2...

Good grief! What a horrible experience! My son and I both have iPod 5G 30's. He has iTunes installed on an eMachines running XPSP2. Last night he tried to install iTunes7. Every time we tried to install it, it would throw an error msg that it couldn't install iTunes because QuickTime wasn't installed. After messing around with, deleting iTunes and QuickTime and manually deleting the program files, and deleting registry entries and downloading the iTunes installer a couple of times... QT and iTunes installed. The last iTunes installer that was downloaded was 2k different in size than the first one.
Then the fun updating the iPod started. As many others here have indicated, he was getting the unending "Do not disconnect" msg. Tried the reset thing some suggested. Tried the disconnect and reconnect some suggested. Got to the point where the iPod was showing 1.2 for the system, but iTunes wasn't seeing it. Restarted the computer, which took an unusually long time to get to the desktop, and, voila! iTunes saw the iPod and things appear to be working OK.
But gawd... I sure am reluctant to put iTunes7 and 1.2 on my system after spending close to 3 hours messing around to get his setup to work. And considering the number of others who are also experiencing problems... hmmm... I mean, I understand that most people that are posting here are doing so because they're having problems and there are folks out there that aren't having problems but... this sure leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Additionally, to get games to work on his iPod, he had to authorize his computer... which was already authorized in iTunes6. I don't think it's acceptable for Apple to burn an authorization because one installs a new version of iTunes. I'd love to know if that is in the software license.
To all those who have not updated to iTunes7 or iPod system 1.2... GOOD LUCK! Plan to spend some time trying to get it to work. To those who update successfully on the first try; congratulations, you dodged a bullet. To those who run into problems; I feel your pain.
Thanks,
Lang

Well... here's an interesting development...
Having not much to do, and throwing caution to the wind, I decided to try the update on my system.
Completely opposite of my son's and my experience updating his system.
iTunes7 installed without a hitch.
iPod firmware 1.2 installed without a hitch.
Whole thing took like 5 minutes.
I know they're two different systems, but we keep our systems pretty clean; no 3rd party sound doo-hickeys or stuff like that. Pretty vanilla.
I guess all I can say is that I sure am glad I didn't have to go through the crap we went through on his system to get iT7 and 1.2 working on my system! LOL
Thanks,

  • IPod Touch Updating to OS 3.1 & Windows Connection Issues Possible Solution

    Hi everyone,
I may have found a solution to "there was a problem downloading ..." error message. I had recently setup some content filtering on my router, and after disabling it, my iPod Touch 2nd gen is finally updating to OS 3.1.1. Please note that this may be common and this maybe due to keyword filtering, for example: xxx or w4m, etc; apparently, somewhere in the link to download the new OS, the content filter ends up blocking the download.
So checkout your routers or content filtering software and temporarily disable the filters until the update is complete.

You will get a prompt to restore, or set up as a new ipod. you dont want to restore from the windows machine, and dont want to set it up as a new ipod. you should restore it on the mac, after the update.

  • Trying to get Ipod to Update songs from ITunes

I have downloaded a whole stack of CDs into iTunes but I can't get my Ipod to Update with the new stuff.
Ever since I got my iPod (40GB) I have had problems with this. Sometimes I just have to go round and round in circles til the computer takes pity on me and it works (or at least, that's how it feels!!) but this week, it's having none of it and it's driving me nuts.
The manual says that if the option is set up, the IPod will automatically update when it is connected to the PC - but it doesn't (and the option is definitely set up right). My PC recognises that I have plugged it in and when I take it out, by making a noise, but the songs are not updating.
Can anyone help at all? The Ipod is fully charged, I have updated all software, tried re-setting, it is switched on etc. I don't want to start again as I have over 4000 songs in on my iPod and I don't want to have to download them all again.
Hoping someone out there can help. If not, watch your heads cos there's an Ipod about to be launched through a window!!! lol.

    Thanks, but it didn't help.
However - I did finally get it to work!!!
I just kept resetting the Ipod, plugging it into my PC and updating the software until it finally did the update properly and then it finally updated my IPod!!
It has always been a problem, but this was longer than usual before it did it.
All I can suggest to others out there with the same problem is to make sure that your Ipod is completely charged before you start trying to update your Ipod. Re-boot your PC and then try again when everything is "fresh" etc.
Keep resetting the Ipod whilst it is plugged into the PC - press and hold the menu and select button for 6-10 seconds until the apple logo appears. When I did this, my PC kept making the noise like when you unplug it or plug it in and the PC recognises it - even though I hadn't unplugged it.
Eventually I got a message saying the software needed updating and to click on the "update" option (as far as I was aware, I had done this 4 times already, but I did it again anyway!). Part way through I got an icon on my Ipod saying to plug it into the mains to charge it (showing a plug going into plug socket). I did that, plugged it back into pc when it was fully charged again and Itunes finally recognised it and updated the Ipod.
A lot of messing and freaking annoying, but I got there in the end. Good luck to everyone else!!!

I finally updated my Touch to iOS5, and now I can't access my apps or pictures. Can anyone help?

    - You can't drag and drop app.  You have to syc them by checkingthe one syou want synced and then click on the sync button.
    - For the app problem try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Download/install any new app.

  • IPod Touch update to 3.0 firmware not working !!!

So I connected my iTouch to iTunes, I clicked the option ''update to 3.0 software''...I download it and things seem to be stuck now...I can see on iTunes the message ''updating iPod software'' and it's been there for an hour already...on the iPod screen there's a grey bar wich showed the progress...it's full, but it also keeps staying there...nothing is moving on...everything is just blocked at the final stage !!! What the heck is going on ???

    Hi Eli,
Can you download anything else from the iTunes Store? Try downloading something else, like a Free Single of the Week or free app.
If you can't download anything from the iTunes store, try reconfiguring or temporarily disabling the security software on your PC.
If you can download other items from the iTunes Store, try deleting the iPod software updates "~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates (The tilde "~" represents your Home directory.)" as suggested here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
Also, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. You can download it here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • Error message iPod cannot update b/c all of the playlists no longer exist

Hello. I have been getting this error message. "Songs on the iPod "MAR(the name of my iPod)" cannot update because all of the playlists selecting for updating no longer exist." And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist. I have a feeling ths might have to do with the fact that on vacation the person I was visiting gave me a gift of putting all of his music that would fit into the external hard drive part of my iPod, and for the past week or so I have been putting that music onto my 40 GB portable hard drive at home. I suspect I took a vital folder out of my iPod by accident. Right now I have the folder iPod_control if I open my iPod up in My Computer. Am I missing something? Right now my iPod is empty because iTunes made a composite playlist last week and I deleted it thinking I could get my real playlists back. Can you help me, or reccomend a site/someone who can? Thank you.

    hiya!
And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist.
let's just doublecheck this. folks get this message if they have "automatically update selected playlists only" selected in their itunes "ipod" preferences tab. so bring up that tab ("edit > preferences", click "ipod" while the ipod is showing up in the source list), and do a playlist by playlist crosscheck of the playlists selected in that tab, and the playlists showing up in the itunes sourcelist.
is there any playlist selected in the preferences tab that isn't showing up in the sourcelist?
    love, b

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • Plug in an iPod to update... I would, if I could!

It cannot be coincidence that at the point I was installing updater 2006-03-23 my iPod became unrecognisable by my PC. I first got the “I can’t mount iPod” and now get “Plug in an iPod to update”!
It was working fine and now it’s not. There seems to be a lot of it about. I have tried everything and nothing works. Does anybody know if it’s an Apple software problem or can anyone help with new ideas?

Can't mount iPod typically means that some software on your PC is interfering with your iPod and not allowing the iPod Updater or iTunes to update it. The troubleshooting steps in the following article usually resolve the issue.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
However, it sounds like your iPod currently is not registered at all. First, try resetting the iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
If that doesn't help, try restarting your computer. If that doesn't work, connect your iPod and see if it is recognized in My Computer as a removable disk. If it is, you can format it in Windows to resolve the issue.
    1. Right click on the removable disk
    2. Click format
    3. Click Quick format
    4. Click start
    5. Wait for confirmation that your disk has been successfully formatted. Once you receive this, and you close the formatting dialog box, iTunes should open up within the next 2 minutes or so, and offer you the iPod setup assistant, so you can go ahead and rename your iPod, and set your update preferences, and then your iPod should be good to go.
P.S. What type of iPod do you have? I've been hearing rumors that the iPod nano has some kind of problem with the new iPod Updater. If you can't get the issue sorted out, and you do have an iPod nano, you might want to actually give Apple a call and see if there's any information they can give you.

I have an Ipod touch updated to last available ios 4.2.1.
How can I get the last compatible versions of the apps?
In the appstore there are only the lat app versions, most of them are incompatible with my device.
I know that previous versions of these apps were compatible with my ipod.
    Can all download them someway?
    thanks

The problem is: I never had the compatible versions. But I want them, I'd buy them if I could.
So I'm stuck with my Ipod, which can't be upgraded anymore to higher IOS versions, and with the appstore, that does not offer older versions; versions that have existed and still exist, perhaps in the recycle bin of some users, or somewhere in the appstore servers.
I know, its a policy, just to sell more devices. Will not work with me. I'm not buying more Ipods
