  • Cant update my iPod - unknown error - need tecnical help!

I am using iTunes 7.0.2.16 (latest version), iPod 5th generation (software version 1.1.1), OS: Windows XP SP2.
The problem is that i cant automatically update my iPod firmware to 1.2 version. When i click to "Update" i get unknown error message (number 23). The error message is not contain information about cause of error, only that its "unknown".
I guess, its because my firmware is 1.1.1 and not 1.1.2 as its supposed to be, but i dont know.
So i hope, that you can help me to solve it without restoring my iPod (it will be big trouble with my 3000 songs..).
If someone knows where i can download 1.1.2 firmware to try with it first, pls give me the link.
    Thanks for attention!

My Ipod/Itunes seems to have the same problem. Downloading other things doesn't seem to matter, but I can't download the update. It always says, could not connect to the iPod update server! It says to check my connection, but I'm obviously connected to the Internet...It does that when I try to restore, or update. Any thoughts?

  • IPod Shuffle Error 1418: discovering more, let's try new ways

I tried to fix my iPod without success, reading every single message of this board or in googgle... and I found a interesting thing: the iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a DAMAGED pen drive or memory stick. Let's not focus on iTunes7, iTunes6, restore it, update it, etc.. it won't work. Let's focus instead on HOW to force Windows to recognize that there is a 1GB disk inside the pen drive we are attaching. The goal then is to format it via an utility like "HP Format tool" or via "Command": afterwards I think it would be a game to restore it in iTunes. We can try also with utilities for pen drives data recovery, I don't know
And about the cause of the problem, I found it could be that the iPod Shuffle can fail when removed without clicking on "Secure Hardware Remove" in windows
Ok, I tried to pull out some ideas, only alltogether we can have success. Apple abandoned us, let's face this situation and let's try to recover this iPod Shuffle, cause I can't accept I have to trow it and buy a new player.
    Thanks and good luck

OK guys, after one week without sleeping, searching every corner of the web and every corner of dedicate forum (this site,iPodLounge,etc...), I have to give up. These are my final conclusions (I am an electronic engineering student here in Italy, I love music, I talked to a lot of collegues and friends, I asked for others opinions: I can't say I'm an expert, but I know where I'm putting my hands)
    1) I tried the iPod Shuffle in Windows XP, MAC OS X & Linux. The computer can recognize that an iPod Shuffle is attached, but it's impossible to read what's inside (I/O error). That means it's impossible to see the CAPACITY of the disk, it's impossible to FORMAT it (failure of commands like fdisk, chkdisk, format, mount, etc...) or to use disk utilities programs like HP Format Tool, Disk Utility in the Mac, Windows USB, etc... With Linux we have the information that the operating system can't read the iPod Shuffle first memory block. And in Windows in fact we have the message "insert a disk"
    2) For this reason it's impossible to fully restore the iPod with Apple utilities, just because we can't write on the flash memory of the iPod. This explains the 1418 error in iTunes 7 and the errors on the previous versions of iPod Updater. As I said before, iTunes recognize that the iPod is attached because it recognizes the hardware (as we can see in the Control Panel), but it doesn't recognize its flash memory and says it's corrupted (as we "cannot see" in the Disk Manager)
    3) The iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a traditional USB pen drive with a damaged flash memory
    4) I can assume that iTunes 7 has stressed the iPod Shuffle "burning some sectors" of the memory, it's just not a coincidence. Other reasons may be plugging out the device without clicking on "Remove securely hardware" on Windows taskbar, after the installation of iTunes 7. Anyway we must remember that iTunes7 incorporated the old iPod Updater, a new "iPod data usage" system, and a new volume limiter... Find your own conclusion..
    5) For newbies, remember that the iPod Firmware is ON the flash memory (that's why in 1GB models you saw only 990 MB free). If we can't restore the firmware, it means we can't restore the flash memory.
So, if your warranty has expired, I suggest 2 conclusions:
    1) Open your iPod and try to replace the flash memory with a new one.
    2) Take your iPod with you, go to the nearest Apple Center, and stick it in the right place you can find there....
Good luck to all of you and thanks for your attention!
PS: 2 years ago I bought an iPod shuffle in Singapore, only to found in Italy that the button was spoiled. The replacement served me till last week, when I had the idea to install iTunes 7.
But 4 years ago I bought a 20 GB Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. He's still here doing his job, and smiling to me when I need him. I used him even to djing in smoky and wet parties... and Creative is a Singapore brand...

  • TS1372 can't restore ipod shuffle error 1442

how xan i restart my ipod shuffle with unknown error occured 1442?

I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX IT:
    1) You need to make sure you back up your library so you can maintain your ID3 tags, ratings, and library settings. So follow the instructions located at: http://www.kadavy.net/blog/archive/2005/08/transferyouri.php
    2) Uninstall iTunes completely
    - After uninstalling, make sure that the following directories are erased:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
    - this will ensure that all the previously installed versions of iPod firmware updates are erased.
    3) One other thing that I did, which I don't know if it helped. Was cleared my registry from previous iTunes installations, by
    a. clicking start....run
    b. typing 'regedit'
    c. searching for strings that had "iTunes" in them and removing the ones under the folder "SOFTWARE" and NOT ANY OTHERS.
~be advised that the registry is very crucial to Windows interface and I am not liable for any damage done due to ignorance or neglect during this step
    4) Empty Recycling Bin to get rid of everything
    5) Re-install the latest versions of iTunes available at www.apple.com
    6) Click File-->Import and then selecting your exported Library File (XML)
this will re-import all your settings and album ratings and ID3 tags

  • Ipod Communications Error rec'd when connecting to Ipod port in Scion Xb

I recently purchased an Ipod Nano and a Scion Xb. The Scion has an Ipod port for easy connection. However, when I connect my Ipod Nano to the port/cable, I get an error message. "Ipod Communication Error" Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?

I have a Scion xB 2006 with the Pioneer iPod control and an iPod Photo 30GB. Which was working fine for about 3 weeks and now it will play a few tunes and then freeze. I've also run into songs playing but with no sound on iPod. I've tried rebooting the iPod, I've tried to restore/update, reload the music and settings on the iPod with no luck. After the freeze the setting stay stuck to the Scion logo on the iPod.
I suspect Pioneer puts a little bit of code out on the iPod disk or firmware to get it to work with the Steering Wheel controls as well as putting out its own logo and messages on the iPod display itself. Support for the iPod podcast menu seems non-existent as well. It would be nice if there was a way to get the iPod back to Factory Settings. I suspect a problem with the manufacturer Pioneer. But I'll go complain to my dealer first!

  • Firmware Error, help please?

Well... I bought my mini in July. It was working fine until the other day when I connected it to the computer to update the songs. It suddenly had the folder and sad ipod error. I tried to restore it and it had the error, "Firmware error, cannot write to disk." I tried putting it in Disk Mode, it worked but I still can't update it. I can't start it either, I'm not sure if I should send it in or not.

Apparently, it sounds like there's a problem with your iPod's hard disk; honestly, I don't think there's anything at home you can do about it.
    Send it in.

  • Problem updating iPod firmware 1.2: can't find firmware

    Hi everybody!
I just downloaded the latest version of iTune (7) and tried to update my iPod video, but, after connecting my iPod to the PC, when iTune ask me if I want to (more or less) "update your iPod firmware to 1.2" and I press "yes" a error message pops up saying: (more or less) "updating error: cannot find the firmware".
What does it mean?? I think it should download the firmware first...hmmm
    any help will be appreciated!

I'm having the exact same problem and tried following the advice from apple for if the firmware file was corrupt (running chkdsk and then delete the firmware files so the next time iTunes starts it will supposedly download them so you can update) but none of this worked and i still get the same error message. And i can't find a help article for if iTunes can't find the firmware files.
Help us people! I hate how apple gives us iTunes 7 with no freakin' support!!!

    thanks
    dave

    Hi addvi,
The "Other" category, normally should represent the Upgrades and firmwares you've installed, notes, calender informations...
However, sometimes your iPod's memory can become corrupted, probably as the result of an interrupted sync.
The unique way to get around this is to Restore the iPod Touch. Sorry for any inconvenient, this may cause you!
Once, you can't restore the iPod, try doing it on another computer.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod Service Error with iPod installer 2006-06-28

I previously had a Mini but lost it (stolen). I bought a Nano to replace it but could never get it to work. I returned this and purchased a new 30g iPod. Same issues. I get the error message "iPod Service Error" when I open the 2006-06-28 iPod Software Updater. I even get this message whether I have my iPod connected or not. In iTunes, I get the message "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
Well, I've reinstalled iTunes countless times and reinstalled the updater a equal number of times with no luck. I tried all the steps (including links) in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I also used msconfig with no luck. I disabled my Norton internet security and antivirus software with no success. I disabled the Fast User Switching and followed someone's advice regarding FAT32, but again no luck.
I tried to read through all the latest discussions and articles I could find, but am now getting confused. Is there anyone out there who has been able to tackle this problem? My alternative is returning my iPod and giving up on iTunes. Help me please!! Thanks.

Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay. I've been traveling. Yes, I did try making another XP user account and got the same results. I have not tried the installer cleanup. What do I do with this utility? I read the instructions from MS, but not sure if I should just highlight the iTunes, iPod, and QuickTime stuff on my PC. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • IPod Nano Error Message (-48)

I've just got my NEW iPod Nano (Red 4GB) out of the box and when I connected it to iTunes I keep getting the Error Message "Unable to update iPod Bob Error Message (-48)."
Despite the (-48) Error Message the iPod does seemingly update Songs/Photos etc.
I have got a 60GB Video iPod and a new Black iPod Nano (8GB) and have no problems with either of them.
Does anyone know what Error (-48) is????
    Thank you in advance!
    Bob

I have just got back from the Regent Street Apple Store - the trip took 5 hours (I live way outside of London) and cost £35 in fares (thanks Apple!)
I met with a guy from the iPod Genius Bar - and there is indeed a "problem" with Error (-48) which Apple are fully aware of. I took my iPod Nano (4GB Red) which DOES have this problem and my iPod Nano (8GB Black) which does not PLUS my iBook so the guys at Apple could see for themselves the problem I am having.
It seems they are aware of the problem - but could offer NO solution at this time and Apple are definaitely working it! They took data dumps of my iTunes / Mac Configuration etc. and details of both Black and Red iPods (serial numbers etc.)
They were very helpful - and advised me to keep the Red 4GB and sit tight until the Update/Patch to solve the problem is available from Apple.
I was one of MANY turning up at the Genius Bar that day with the SAME problem!
So - there are no quick / sure solutions to this one - I guess we have to wait for Apple to release the fix.

  • Won't show up on itunes or on ipod updater("ipod service error")

Every time i plug my ipod (4g w/ click wheel) it says on itunes software not installed correctly, it shows up as a drive but i can't see it on itunes, i have tried to reinstall itunes more than 5 times and nothing works. Also, when I try to restore my ipod with ipod updater i get an "ipod service error". I am going crazy here trying to figure this out, someone please help me!

Try this for can't mount iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
You might also want to try putting your iPod in disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Sometimes this does the trick (iPod normally needs to be in disk mode in order for it to show up in Disk Management)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
If you're still unable to get your iPod to restore, you can try this:
Put the iPod into disk mode, according to the article above.
    Connect it to your computer.
    Click Start > Run
    Type compmgmt.msc
Click on Disk Management (in the left-hand column)
Let the computer go through its connection process
Right click on the iPod and click Format
    Set the format to FAT32
Leave all the other settings on their defaults
Do Not select the option to Quickformat
    Start the format.
It's recommended that you still try to restore the iPod after formatting, but it's not always necessary. This should get your iPod back into iTunes.

Just to conclude, and give hope for any still suffering, I succesfully upgraded my iPAD to ios5 yesterday evening.
I did have a conversation with Apple support a couple of days agao, in line with many others I was given various reasons why things oustide the Apple environment might be the root cause such as
    - ports blocked on the network I was using (although when I asked which ones they weren't certain - "80 and 442 we think" was the response
    - a fault on the iPAD
    - slow network connection
The more interesting part of teh conversation was Apple was that the firmware update part of the install actually involves quite a lot of interaction with apple servers. My conclusion would be that the well documented performance problems in the early days after ios5 release were the root cause of my problem - reference to network ports. iPAD faults were just a smokescreen.
My key learning - don't upgrade soon after a major release, I already knew this but when offered an update I didn't go back and check precisley when it had been released so I should have paid more attention :-)
