IPod flashes?

I'm sorry if this has been aswered already..but I couldn't find it anywhere.
I bought a 60 gb Video iPod yesterday and it worked fine yesterday. I got some songs and a video file on it.
Today, I put in a lot more songs, but when it was done...it started to do something weird.
The iPod's screen has an Apple Logo in the middle of the screen. It gets lit up and then it gets dim, hence it's flashing. It also makes sounds when it lights up and dims.
The iPod won't respond to anything- I tried menu and select and the screen goes blank, but only whilst the buttons are pressed (hold mode or letting it go just makes it go back to it's 'flashing' mode) Also the computer doesn't seem to detect it anymore...
Has anyone seen this before and what should I do?

  • Ipod flashing on and off

Alright, I had to do a full restore on my computer and lost everything. Plugged the Ipod in afterwards, and lost all my songs/movies. Well now it told me that I had to download the update in order to put new songs on. I did. Now the ipod is flashing on and off and wont let me do anything. I tried reseting it, and it turns off, but as soon as I let go of the buttons it goes right back to flashing on and off. I need some help. Anything anyone could tell me?

I have the same problem, created first when iPod updated on Friday night. I returned the month old iPod for a new one, installed and was downloading library when the new Ipod went into the same catastrophic failure.
HERE IS THE FIX: (walked through w/ Apple Store Rep)
    1. Make sure there is power to the iPod (with all the cycling, your battery is probably drained).
    2. Toggle the Lock Switch on top of the iPod 3 or 4 times, then hold Menu and Center Button down simultaneously (same as doing a reset).
    3. When the Apple Logo reappears, hold the Center Button and the Play/Pause button down simultaneouly.
    4. If all goes well, the screen should say, at the very top, Disk Drive Mode (or something to that effect).
    5. If you have been running off computer power, disconnect then reconnect the usb cable.
    6. Open iTunes
If all goes well, the iPod connection should appear on the iTunes screen with the opportunity to Restore.
    7. Restore your iPod to factory settings. Once the download is complete, you should be back in business.

  • Ipod flashes "do not disconnect", not recognized in itunes source - Help!

My ipod (2nd generation) continues flashes do not disconnect when connected. Recently upgraded to itunes 8. Have tried 5Rs including restarting service, renaming drive, reinstalling itunes, etc.
Also ran diagnostic, all test pass except sync test. Please help, any thoughts?

hi, thanks for responding so quickly. here's what happened:
    1. i connected the ipod to my laptop and the DND (do no disconnect) message flashed on the ipod screen.
    2. as u suggested, i clicked on itunes and tried to change its setting to automatic..it was on automatic already.
*laptop showed update was completed but DND message still flashes on ipod. I decided to check if everything else was working.
    3. downloaded a song and when it was done i checked my itune page and library...song wasn't there.
    4. i clicked file, add file to the library, browsed and found the song in documents/music/itunes.
    5. clicked open then updated the ipod.
*update completed, DND shows on ipod, clicked eject, took out the cable.
    6. menu showed on screen, all other songs were there expect for the last one i tried to transfer.
i don't know what to do now...?? could it be broke?

  • IPOD - flashing red in itunes won't read or write

I seem to be having a major problem. After updating to 10.4.2 the ipod was sluggish when adding songs. My Ipod was wiped clean in itunes 5 then I had a folder with an exclamation point - followed all the advice reformatted etc. I was able to load 3 songs - 1 at a time after shut down. Now when Itunes opens the ipod is flashing red and then I get the message - can't read from or write too. What do I do?? I reformatted 3-5 time, changed fire wire ports shut down etc - still no luck.

I am not sure this will fix it, but you mentioned a photo editing program had been installed. If that was due to a new digital camera, you might try changing the drive letter assigned to the ipod. Some digital cameras and photo frames seem to "take over" certain drive letters (typically E,F,or G).
Try changing the ipod drive letter to something further down the alphabet, like M. Directions are at the end of this article:

  • 1st gen iPod flashing screen

I have a 1st gen iPod.  When I went to connect to iTunes to sync and charge my iPod, iTunes does not recognize it and the iPod is flashing the apple logo.  Otherwise it does not power up at all.  It was used as recently as the night before with no issues other than needing to be charged.  Suddenly it appears to be dead.  Help!

Yes. The screen in one model/generation iPod are the same.

  • Ipod flashes red when attempting to sync.

since 5.0 i have not been able to sync and i have lost 1200 songs from my ipod that are still showing in my itunes library. when i attempt a transfer the ipod icon in the margin of itunes flashes red then i get unknown error -69.
    A) what does the flashing red ipod icon indicate?
    B) to what does error -69 pertain?
    3) would resetting my ipod and erasing everything solve the problem?
P.S. i just purchased an ipod mini for my wife and have been able to put songs on it from my itunes using the same cable that i use for my 40gb ipod.

Its not your ipod it's a smorgasbord of probolems everyons been having with itunes 5. Wait till they get a patch for it. I have a probolem windows or itunes shutdown and dont recognise my pod when plugged in!

  • Ipod flash

just curious, i know this has probably been asked a million times, but is it possible to use my ipod nano as a flash drive without having to load up itunes on every computer that i connect it to? for instnce rather than carrying around a seperate usb flash drive to all my classes- i'd rather like to just plug in my ipod if possible to whatever computer i use and save a word document or something of that nature...thanks in advance!

correct, not every computer here at texas a&m is a mac so i want to be able to connect it to a pc should i ever not take my mac with me- which i dont forsee happening often, however i always carry my ipod around, so if i do the fat 32 thing, will it delete all the music i have on my ipod? how would i go about doing this? it's probably easier just buying a new flash drive it's just that i know i'll probably lose it again like i lost my old 1....

  • IPod flashing red in iTunes

I left my iPod connected to my computer all night, and when I opened iTunes in the morning to manage it, the iPod icon in the source window was flashing red! I have never seen this before- it was not updating or doing anything in particular at the time. It's still doing it right now. Does anyone know what this means? I haven't been able to find any documentation on it at all.

My son's friend got an IPod 60 GB. The new video IPod. He logged on my Windows computer and plugged his new IPod into my son's ITunes. When he did this it automatically copied all of my son's songs onto his IPod but it flashed red. We then restarted his IPod wiped everything off of it and reset it to the factory settings. I set up him as a new user on my computer and it gave him a blank Itunes library so he could download and update just his IPod. The problem now is that it won't eject the IPod and it flashed red on startup. It gives me the message that the IPod cannot eject because files are in use by another application. How do I fix this?

  • IPod flashing orange though disk use is disabled

Hello, my iPod Shuffle (4th gen) is flashing orange (and the windows safely remove hardware thing appears) until I sync it with iTunes or safely remove it (the led changes to solid green and the hardware removal thing disappears), though disk use is disabled. I already resetted the iPod but that didn't fix the problem. I'm using Win 7 64-bit.
(And I think it's only supposed to flash if it's syncing or enabled as volume.)

    Hello gonida,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • IPod Flashing Screen Of Death?

I've seen similar topics with this problem, but still no answer. ***? The issue is that my iPod was playing normally, doing everything jsut fine, then all of a sudden it shut off. Figuring that it had just run out of jucie, I plugged it into the wall and...nothing. Then I plugged into the computer...still nothing. Then I plugged it in and tried to do a rest...nothing. THEN it started just flashing white flashes once a second. When you unplug it, it stops, but it won't charge, won't turn on, won't be recognized by anything. What is up? All I need to know is what is wrong with it and I will fix it!

I am currently running XP and no matter WHERE I plug my iPod in, it won't work. All it does is flash the backlight on and off of the apple screen. It won't charge, and it won't be recognized by my computer. When I plug it in, it says that there is very low battery, even though it was flashing on the charger for a week...

  • IPod flashing "Do Not Disconnect"

My 30GB ipod has been flashing "Do Not Disconnect", with a red crossed-out circle. I placed it in my dock at lunch today to recharge it, and I just retunred home to see it flashing. Itunes says the sync is complete and all software is up to date. I recharged my brother's ipod last night, and everything was normal. Can anyone please help me?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
The "Do Not Disconnect" screen will continue to stay displayed on your iPod, simply because you have Disk Use enabled (when automatically syncing iPod with iTunes).
If you are automatically syncing songs to your iPod, then disable disk use.

  • Ipod Flashing Screen

I am traveling across Europe and the IPod is one of my best friends until last night when I got back to the hotel and tried to turn it on and I was greeted with a screen whcih flashed different colours (in what I think is a random order). The Ipod wasn't connected to a power source or a computer so I wouldn't think that there would be any reason for it to fail like this.
I am still able to turn the backlight on and off - but it won't play any sounds at all.
    Thanks for any help.
p.s. I have all of my Europe photos stored on my Ipod and I am really worried about losing all of them so if there is any option other than restoring the Ipod that would be preferable.

  • Video iPod flashes on desktop then disappears

When I connect my video iPod to my PowerMac, it flashes on the desktop (and if I'm quick enough I can even double click it and open up a folder), but once iTunes starts up, the icon disappears. Even when I force quit iTunes before it starts, my iPod still disappears. Any help in finding my wayward icon?
    Thanks!

  • Ipod flashes twice, dies

So my battery got low and it told me to plug in my ipod into my computer. No problem. I did that, and left for an hour to watch a movie.
I came back, and tried to turn it on. The screen flashes the apple twice and then dies. I tried reseting it with no luck. The Ipod isn't even being recognized anymore, and there is nothing wrong with my ports.
    Any idea on what's wrong?

How old is this iPod? How heavily do you use it?
Try letting it completely deplete the battery (24 hours) and then connect it to power and let it charge for at least 30 minutes. While it is connected to power Reset it (hold down the menu and center button for 6 seconds). You may have to try this several times. When it comes alive Restore it in iTunes and then fully charge it.

  • 1G iPod Flashes Apple/Battery icons

I've searched the discussions database extensively and have not been able to find any hints on this issue. Basically, my iPod's firewire port stopped working a year ago and I opened it up and couldn't figure out how to get to it, but in the meantime the iPod stopped working at all.
Well, this year I opened it again and fixed the firewire port. Now when I plug the iPod into power/my computer, it just flashes back and forth between the Apple and battery w/! icons. I unplugged the battery and the screen still loops the same way.
Now, I have a slight tear in the hard drive connector cable and a couple capacitors have been knocked off (need to be more careful). I'm not sure when these came off - I'll probably replace them with random values tomorrow. Just for kicks, I unplugged the hard drive to see how many variables I can take out of the equation, but the system will not even boot to the apple screen w/o the drive. It seems like the harddrive isn't even spinning at this point - I'm not sure if there's an access problem to the hard drive or if the ipod isn't even booting up that far. It would seem that the iPod isn't booting up that far or I would get the exclamation point folder icon.
None of the buttons trigger a response (disk mode, diagnostic mode, force reset).
    So my questions are:
    1) Has anyone else had this issue?
    2) Has anyone else ripped their hard drive cable?
    3) If anyone at apple reads this - can you look at the schematic and get me the right capacitor values for C37, C53, and C59 (please)?
    4) Anyone with a broken 1G iPod willing to sell/give away their parts so I can try to fix this?
Thanks for your time. Please respond with any ideas...

Ok - how many of you read this and said, "this guy is f*ed." Well, I replaced the broken capacitors on the board (the values of 0.1uF, 0.47uF, and 1uF were chosen randomly). Then I had the soldering specialist at work fix the hard drive connector cable. iPod now works. Battery even still holds a small charge. NICE.
