Ipod for Mac 9.2.2?

I was using an Mac OS 9.2 laptop for a while, and I had some songs on there that I'd still like to listen to. What ipods can I use with that operating system?
Powerbook G3 Wallstreet   Mac OS 9.2.x   non-firewire

Really? Here's what someone on an LJ comm said...
1st Gen Shuffles (the white ones, still for sale NEW at some retail stores and refurb on the apple site) work just great with G3/OS 9/iTunes v. 6? I'd have to go start up a machine to make sure, but I think it is iTunes 6.something.
ps - if you have any PURCHASED music on an iPod, iTunes will offer to transfer it over to your newer library when you associate it with a newer machine. you could also just physically move the files or library via any media and Add or Import into new iTunes machine, if that's the issue.
What I don't understand is if no iPod is compatible, why would I have to get an iPod 1.0.3(?) update?

  • Want to use my ipod for Mac @ home and PC @ work....

I have a Mac at home and have my ipod set up for the Mac I guess. So I brought the ipod to work today to hook it up to itunes here on my PC, but itunes says only Windows formatted ipods can be used and that I have to do a restore on my ipod to use it.
I thought you could use the ipod on multiple computers? I thought it didn't matter if it was set for Mac or PC because you could still use it on both.
Any help? I want to connect my ipod at work so I can get the music on this computer. Thanks!!

Windows computers cannot read the file format the iPods are in when they are formatted for Mac use. However, Macs can read the Fat32 file format that the iPods go in when they are formatted for Windows.
To use the iPod with both computers, you'll have to first restore the iPod on your Windows computer (putting the iPod into Windows format).
The only downside is if there is an iPod software update, you won't be able to install that to the iPod from the Mac, just from Windows computers.

  • 2nd generation ipod for mac

someone please refresh my memory. i seem to remember that apple made two different versions of ipods then, one for windows and one for macs. and that the one for windows shipped with musicmatch software on it. here's where my memory gets fuzzy. i seem to remember that macs could use either one but that for windows users they had to get the correct one. or was it the other way around? i may get one of these things. incidently i have a mac.

  • Formatting ipod for mac & PC?

Is it possible use my iPod with both my Mac and PC without reformating my iPod every time?

If you restore it on a PC and format it for Windows you should be able to use it on both platforms. Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported, Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. What this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC.
Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews: XPlay 2
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Format iPod for Mac... using Windows.

So I have my cousin's iPod here, and I was told to make it work. They have a Mac, I have a PC. Their Mac wouldn't read the iPod at all, and I surmised that was because it was formatted for Windows. So I took it home to my Windows PC and restored the settings, but of course, there was no option to set it to Mac.
SO, how can I use my Windows PC to set the iPod nano (1st gen) to Mac?

Their Mac wouldn't read the iPod at all, and I surmised that was because it was formatted for Windows.
    That isn't the problem.
SO, how can I use my Windows PC to set the iPod nano (1st gen) to Mac?
You basically can't. Formatting the iPod from a program other than iTunes or the iPod updater disables its ability to be used as a music player.

You can try this to erase your IPOD

Hopefully this will work and then the next time you connect it your mac, it will format it for use on a mac.

  • Reformatting Windows iPod for Mac

I have an older model iPod I used to use with Windows (version 2.2?). Now, I have purchased and iMac, and I'd like to use the iPod with my new computer. However, when I connect, of course it doesn't recognize the iPod. How do I reformat it???
    Thanks for any help.

Normally, a Mac computer should able to read a window formatted iPod.
You can download and install iTunes 7 on your Mac computer, and do a Restore for your iPod

Sorry, but Windows is not compatible with the Mac file format.
You can use iTunes on the Windows computer to Restore the iPod and then it will work with Windows computers.

    iPod: Frequently Asked Questions
Learn the answers to some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding iPod.
Question: I have both a Mac and a PC. Will my iPod work on both?
Answer: No, not at the same time. iPod is configured for either Mac or PC. You can use the iPod Updater to restore iPod to work with a Mac or a PC (depending on which version of the updater you use). See "Restoring iPod to factory settings" for more information. Note: Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple. FAT32 is the format used by Windows, and while some FAT32 iPod models may work with your Mac, Apple only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. For more information see the iPod shuffle Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
Question: Can I use an iPod formatted for Mac on a PC, or an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac?
Answer: It is not possible to use an iPod formatted for Mac with Windows. This is because Windows does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive.
You can convert an iPod formatted for Windows into an iPod for Mac by using the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple website. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs. You need Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1 or later to reformat an iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac.
Note: Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple.

  • Convert Windows ipod to mac; Can I go back?

I read the following on Apple's knowledge info.
"You can convert an iPod formatted for Windows into an iPod for Mac by using the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple website. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs. You need Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1 or later to reformat an iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac."
Now my question is if I convert a windows ipod to a mac ipod and then can I go back later and convert it from a mac ipod back to a pc ipod?
Has anyone done it successfully? I understand it isn't officially supported.

If I use my daughter's PC (with iTunes & iPod software) to configure the iPod to be formatted to accept the PC data, I need to "reset" the iPod.
You mean to restore the iPod. Restore and reset are quite different operations.
This will erase everything which is no problem as I have all the music on my Mac and can reinstall - or can I?
    Yes, you can.
When resetting the iPod on the PC does that operation make that PC the "master" and cause the iPod to want to be connected to it for updates of songs?
After you restore the iPod on the PC, it makes the PC the master.
Will that cause the iPod to think my Mac is not its "master" computer?
    Yes, it will.
To use an iPod between these 2 computers and allow the iPod to be readable by both the Mac and the PC, you should restore the iPod using the PC and set the iPod to manual update. Check this: Using iPod with multiple computers

  • Connect Ipod to Mac and Windows

I started to connect my Ipod to my Windows computer. Now I bought an Imac. I want to connect my Ipod to my mac without loose all the songs I have loaded to my Ipod from my Windows pc.
    Is that possible ?
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Cheers from Copenhagen - Frank

Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported however many people use one without any issue. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac but Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. This means you will have to make sure that any time there is a software update available you do this on a PC. If you updated the software while the iPod was connected to the Mac you would end up erasing and formatting the iPod for Mac.
If you only intend using the iPod on the Mac from now on, you could transfer your songs to the computer and then Restore the iPod on your Mac. Restoring will erase and reformat the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7
If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7 A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • Reformatting ipod to Mac format?

Hi all. Ive got a 5th generation ipod 30gig. I previously had it synced with my Dell, but recently bought a macbook pro.
I moved my music library from my dell to my MBP via an external hard drive. The first time i plugged my ipod up to my mac, it said that i must erase the current library on my ipod in order to sync it with the new computer. I did this, since my entire library was already on my mac, I knew i wouldn't loose any of my songs.
This worked perfectly and an hour later, my ipod had been erased, and resynced with my MBP and i didn't loose any songs.
What i did notice though, is that my ipod still says it is formatted for windows. Should i wipe out my ipod again and reformat it for my mac? Would I gain anything by doing this? Or does it not matter?
I was under the impression my ipod would HAVE to be Mac formated in order to sync with my MBP.

"Well, before to reformate it, I'd like to be sure that all the music that I've in my ipd it will not be ERASE"
Reformatting the iPod for Mac will require restoring it. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up.
