Try to reset your device by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again.
If this does not help, restore "as new device" How to back up your data and set up as a new device

I downloaded the iOS7 and I can't force quit the open apps. I was told, "Force-quitting apps is a little different though: Instead of tapping and holding on the icon, you flick a thumbnail up to dismiss it." Unfortunately, that didn't work. Any comments please & thank you

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Prior to loading 1OS7 it was easy to force quit applications that were still open by double clicking and seeing an a red "x" you had to click on.
It doesn't work that way with the new operating system and the instructions that were given "Force-quitting apps is a little different though: Instead of tapping and holding on the icon, you flick a thumbnail up to dismiss it."
    Do not work.
I am looking for anyone who can help figure this out.

  • HT5137 I went to the genius bar the other day and was told that force quitting apps was the single worst thing I can do to my phone or iPad, short of dropping and damaging it, or jailbreaking it. Is this true or false?

I went to the genius bar the other day and was told that force quitting apps was the single worst thing I can do to my phone or iPad, short of dropping and damaging it, or jailbreaking it.That it is bad for the software, firmware and battery. The employee was very excited about the topic and cringed when I force quit in front of him. He gave me the url to read about multi-tasking so that i could read more. But neither that page nor the force quitting apps page says anything about this activity being bad. Is it so bad? If so, why don't we know that? So many people I know force quit in an effort to have fewer pages appear.

Thank you for the feedback. I can breathe a sigh of relief that I can once again clear these pages from my sight. This employee said he tells about a half dozen people a day when they come in with various problems, as he is attributing their problems to force quitting. It's like he was out to save the world, one iphone user at a time. I'm talking *serious* passion from this man!

  • When force quitting Apps' Icon remains in Dock

I'm having a problem when I have to force quit applications. When I Force Quit an application the app quits but the apps' icon with the indicater still on remains in the dock. When this happens I'm unable to launch the same app again. This is really getting to be a pain so any help would be appreciated.

I would be more concerned with the fact that you are required to Force Quit applications, as that suggests something more serious than a stuck icon in the Dock which is but a symptom.
You could start up in safe mode,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
which perform an fsck on the disk, which may rectify a problem with your disk, as well as excluding third party applications until the next normal restart. This could give you some indication of whether the problem is caused by some third party app or not.

  • Force Quit Apps Stick in Dock

This has happened a few times with a few different apps (Webkit/safari, itunes, and others i can't think of right now)
What happens is the app will beachball, ill force quit afterwhich it will still appear in the doc, but cannot be opened, and jsut reappears in the forequit window everytime i try to force quit.
this then causes me to do a hard shutdown to resolve the issue.
I am running safari 3 with latest version of webkit, but i didnt think this was an issue. And also, its not just safari.
    any ideas?

have you tried killing the process in activity monitor? there might be some other things running that prevent the app from completely shutting down. just a thought

  • Force quiting apps on iphone bad for logic board???

While visit the apple store this weekend in regards to our phone not working they asked if we double tap the home and slide up on our apps to close them, of force quit the application.  We responded yes and were told never to do this.  However on previous visits we were told to do this because multiple apps will drain the battery and slow the phone down.  I would love to know what the correct answer to this is and understand why we would be told two different things.

Closing apps does not harm anything.
Whoever told you that is mentally challenged.

  • Is it really (still) necessary to force quit apps-

    … in iOS 8?
Or does that do more harm than good?
    TIA!

Thanks. This paragraph makes it most clear, doesn't it:
By closing the app, you take the app out of the phone's RAM. While you think this may be what you want to do, it's not. When you open that same app again the next time you need it, your device has to load it back into memory all over again. All of that loading and unloading puts more stress on your device than just leaving it alone. Plus, iOS closes apps automatically as it needs more memory, so you're doing something your device is already doing for you. You are meant to be the user of your device, not the janitor.
I'm heading towards stopping doing it!

  • How do I fix my PC so I stop getting pop ups saying I have to force quit apps because of system memory allocation?

I have almost 800GB of hard drive space, so it cant be an issue there.  I read that it could be problems with the system and virtual memory and swaps, but dont know how to diagnose.

    (it's not a PC it's an iMac)
hehe . I knew someone's going to pick up on that.
At the end of the day, it is still a PC. A  Personal Computer.
No matter how hard Apple's marketing detaprtment has worked to pretend they are not...

  • My macbook pro iphoto app won't open I get "can't open because its being updated" but it is not and I did not ask for an update. My version is 9.3.2 I tried force quit app store and reboot and everything I could think of.

iphoto tells me it can't open because it's upgrading but it is not and I did not click upgrade

Do you have System Preferences,Software Update set to automatically down load updates?

  • How do I force quit apps on my iPhone 5 after iOS7 upgrade?

  • Since 2.2.1 upgrade, force quit doesn't work after an application freezes

Sorry if this was posted before, but I couldn't find a post that matched my issue.
Has anyone else noticed that since upgrading to 2.2.1 on the 3G, if an application freezes, force quit doesn't work. I have to do a hard reset inorder to get the OS to respond again. Even tried to just hold the power button to do a power off and it doesn't respond.
Any advice? Tried restoring to 2.2.1 many times didn't help.

Thanks for the response. I have done a many restores as "new iphone" and reinstalled apps. I normally get freezes when I'm in a twitter type application and using the "mini/lite safari browser" within the twitter app.
When the phone doesn't freeze, I can force quit apps at will. It's only after a freeze (when I need force quit the most) does it not work....
I would make a Genius Bar appointment but I can't recreate it at will.

  • Cannot close user. 'settings' flash on screen and then disappear.  Force Quit does not solve it

Applemac used by members of family.  One will not close, although I access via the drop down menu top right to change user.  I have tried Force Quit (its stuck on Safari) but even that does not work.  I thought I would look at settings, but it flashes up, then disappears. It is my husbands account and I have no idea what he has done!!  Would like to be able to see settings and also to close as necessary.  Help

You can use the Activity Monitor app to force quit apps as well. Activity Monitor is located in HD > Applications > Utilities

Select Mail then click the force quit icon  (circle with an x) top left side of the Activity Monitor window.

  • Quitting apps

how do i quit an app in the menu bar which isnt listed in the forced quit apps menu?  its an app that is a cpu indicator- a little light

I assume by your reference to "menubar"" you mean something up on the top right part of the screen - yes?
    Two things to try:
    (1) Control-click on the icon in the menubar and see if quit is an option.
    (2) Command-drag the icon off of the menubar and let it go up in a puff of smoke.
Or do you mean something in the Dock?
