Ipod formatted on intel Mac can't be read when connected to G4 w/ 10.3.9

Is there anyway to add music to an iPod (from iTunes) running on a an older G4 Mac with OS X 10.3.9 if the iPod has been formatted on a newer intel based Mac running Lepord? The error I get on my G4 says that the disc I've inserted has volumes on it that can't be read by my Mac OS software.

The iPod needs to be formatted using the APM partition format if the Disk Utility is used to erase it. Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier will not access GUID formatted drives.

Hold down the option key while starting iTunes and make an new library.  Will it open then? If so, you have a bad library.  With the new library import the library.xml version of the file in your iTunes folder.  This will make it 90% like before (some metadata are not identical, but I don't know which ones).

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

  • Camera and ipod shuffle do not show up on desk top when connected

Kodak camera and ipod shuffle do not show up on desk top when connected.  Trying to download pictures and adding my music to ipod shuffle, Anyone have any suggestions.

Have you plugged in another USB device to ensure that the USB ports are working?
Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

  • Can you update apps when connected to itunes on laptop?

can you update apps when connected to itunes on laptop?

Yes. You can download the updates to the apps in iTunes and then sync them to the iPad while the iPad is connected to your computer. I did that last night because I had so many large app updates to do - apps that were 250MB up to 650MB in size - and it just made more sense to me to do it that way.

  • If you format on a Mac can you still use on a PC?

I know it used to be if you formated you iPod to a pc you could use it on both pc and Mac. But if you formated to a Mac you cant ever use it on a PC. Is that still true?

    Kevin Torres,
In reviewing this documentation it appears that your statement can work in theory, but is only supported with iPod shuffles: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1335

  • IPod works well with Mac but Windows can't Open it when connected

    My iPod details: Capacity - 74.37GB, Software Version - 1.3, Format - Windows (MS-DOS FAT 32 format)
    MAC details given below.
PC details - Windows XP, Service Pack 3.
My iPod was formatted to work with Windows and Mac as I only had a PC when I bought it. It's been working quite well since I bought it and later with the Mac too. However, since the past few weeks, when plugged in to a PC via USB, the iPod is recognised as a folder and fails to OPEN or be EXPLOREed. The only thing allowed is a SEARCH option which helps me transfer files between PC and MAC.
    Help guys!

There may or may not be a physical fault with the WD drive, but Macs can read but not write to NTFS disks unless you use a third party driver like Paragon NTFS for Mac, or NTFSMounter.
Your post seems to imply that before the current problems it used to be OK (ie you could read and write to it). Have you got NTFS for Mac or similar?
Did you have a reson for formatting NTFS? Mac drives are formatted HFS+. If you want Windows to read Mac disks you can install MacDrive in Windows, and Paragon HFS for Windows.

  • Switching iPod Formats - PC to Mac

I am making a switch from PC to Mac. I was able to transfer my music to my Mac, but is there a way I can change the format of my iPod from PC to Mac, so I can be finished with the PC?

this seems ok, but I get a message that the restore won't work becasue files asre in use with another application. which would be what? you need iTunes open to do a restore.

  • HT1335 Getting music off ipod formatted with a Mac

How do I get music off an ipod that has been formatted on a mac and transfer it to my windows computer?

That may be difficult.  The reverse would be easier because Macs can read the Windows disk format (FAT32) used on iPods.  Windows cannot read the disk format used by Macs, without additional (not free) software.  Here is one such product
    http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive
If you can make your Windows PC access the iPod's disk, you can probably use one of the third-party methods or utilities for transferring song files from iPod to computer.  You cannot use iTunes for transferring song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  An Internet search on something like "ipod transfer" should provide some links.
Once the song files from the iPod are on your computer's drive, you can add them to the iTunes library and then re-sync the iPod as desired.

  • Problems With An iPod Formatted For a Mac

I have a 30GB 5G iPod and i formatted it for my mac but now i can't use it as a portable drive to move files from my pc to my mac, do i have to reformat it for a pc to use it to transfer files?

    Hi Anthony,
As you have found out, Windows does not have any native support for Mac formatted drives so your freshly Mac formatted iPod will not be readable on a Windows machine.
However Macs can read Windows formatted iPods just fine, so to answer your question, if you reformat back to DOS (Fat32) format using a Windows machine and iTunes loaded on the Windows machine to perform the "Restore" which will reformat it, you can then plug it into your Mac and sync it to your Mac library, the iPod will remain Windows formatted, and if you enable Disk Mode on the iPod it can be used as an external drive on both Mac and Windows systems.
The only other solution I know of is paying for software to run on the Windows machine to be able to read Mac formats.

  • Loading pc info into ipod formatted in apple mac

my brother loaded his itune library (apple mac) onto my new ipod. I unfortunatley have a hp pc and my ipod does not show up when i plug it into my computer. the prompt tells me to reformat the ipod and remove al the tunes from it. is there any way to convert all those tunes to pc format? and then restore the ipod in pc format?
    hp pavilion   Windows XP

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting I've seen posts on the forum where there have been problems but these would be the exception). Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, XPlay for instance will allow you to play your songs on a PC and even copy them to the computer: XPlay 2

    Roger--
Thanks for the reply. According to the man page for hdiutil, the parameters I'm using should allow me to create a bootable Intel ISO file on the PPC. For example, I've created a work directory with the files to be burned inside it. The command I've used is:
    *+hdiutil makehybrid -o new.iso work/ -iso -eltorito-boot work/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot+*
But, no workee. That's what puzzles me. If it's the same OS version, why doesn't it work? Unless there's some code in the command that's tied specifically to the hardware type that the command is running on...
