Ipod formatted windows quit working

Hello,
I have a 20g ipod that I formatted to windows so I could move it between my home mac and my work pc. This was going great until about a month ago my mac quit recognizing my ipod and would prompt me with the "update or restore" window...with only the restore to original factory settings button available to push. I really don't want to lose all my music I have on there but I can't even pull up my ipod in itunes. Anyone have any ideas what may have happened? I can still see the ipod as a hard disk on my desktop...?

If you format your ipod in windows, you have to update it in windows as well. This means using a windows machine.

  • IPod Classic 160gb quit working

Hi, I was listening to my ipod classic while working out. I had it on shuffle mode and decided to back out into the menu mode to select an album. As soon as I hit the menu button the ipod quit working and now a red X appears telling me to go to apple support.
I went to the "apple.com/support/ipod" and followed the steps to restore my ipod but none of them have worked. I'm unable manually boot into disk mode on the ipod. Is there something else that i can do before bringing this in to the apple store?

    How old is this iPod?

    Hello,
Can you find a PC near you, connect your iPod with it, open the iPod updater and click Restore. Once it has been done, before your connect it with your Mac, reboot your Mac.
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • 160Gb ipod (3yrs old) quit working.

Here's the deal, it was working fine and the battery was getting low, so I plugged it in to the charger yesterday,  Today it wont respond at all.  I used the instructions found here http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/ and it still wont respond.  Tried plugging it into the computer, and the wall, used 2 different cords just in case I had a faulty cord, even tried 2 different plugs.  It seems to be dead.  My last ipod was 6 years old and was still working fine when I got this one, what do I do?  Is this new(er) one dead?  And if so, what can I do to get it repaired?

    anyone?  Is this thing dead?

    Hi breed788,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're seeing issues when trying to reinstall iTunes, I'd recommend starting with the "additional troubleshooting" section in this article:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My previous ipod touch quit working and I lost all the songs I had purchased on it. How can I recover these songs if I can't sync the iPod?

I had a 1st Gen iPod Touch that quit working on me. I had 30-40 songs on it that I had purchased from the iTunes App that I didn't sync back to my computer. How do I recover those lost songs so I can put them on my new iPod?

You buy one and only one download.  It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.

  • IPod Shuffle Windows or Mac formatted?

I just got an iPod shuffle (2nd generation). It wont appear in ITunes. It's not any of the obvious errors listed and the 5 steps doesn't help. I've reset it several times. When I went to run the iPod updater it claims it is a Windows formatted iPod Shuffle and that the updater is for Mac only. The packaging doesn't have any description of it being a Windows only iPod! Can it be reformatted as a Mac iPod? If I don't have iTunes open the Shuffle will load as a disk drive in the finder but not as an iPod. Can anyone help me get my Shuffle to work? Cheers.

iPod formatted on a PC can be read by a Mac computer but not the other way round.
So your iPod of course can be restored or formated on a Mac computer.
I am not too sure, it can be a bad contact between the cable plug with your iPod causing the problem. Otherwise, see doing the following helps
    For Mac computer
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • Ipod Formatted to Windows but I want to use Mac!

I know you should be able to use an ipod formatted to windows on a Mac, but I can't. I have itunes 7 and it won't let me put music on my ipod says software is too old.
I've been trying to update the software but everything says you can't unless you have a mac formatted ipod! I'm so confused. I never had this prob with my old ipod. Help.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

This is looking like a common problem that has a (fairly) simple solution as long as you have access to another Mac. If not, you may have to do a "clean" install of the OS.
The problem is a corrupted file (at least on Macs with the Power PC processor, id est, not an Intel one) by the name of iPodDriver.kext which resides in the Extensions folder of the Library folder of System folder (not the System Folder, this is an important distinction) which you will see by double clicking on the icon of your hard disk on the desktop.
Drag this file to the trash and delete it (empty the trash).
The idea is that you find a Mac that is happy to mount your iPod and display the update and restore buttons correctly (as well as the full range of tabs and other visual clues, such as a non-generic icon of your iPod).
Then copy the aforementioned iPodDriver.kext to a USB stick, iPod, CD, DVD, whatever from the "good" Mac.
Reverse process to put it on your Mac.
    Shut down "your" Mac.
Restart "your" Mac and open iTunes, connect your iPod and, at least in my experience, it will work and provide you with correctly rendered iPod.
Apple used to recognise this problem, but seem to feel that the problem now no longer exists since the introduction of iTunes 7.1.1, however this appears to be arrant nonsense as it keeps cropping up as a problem on these forums (including in iPods and Macs running the most up to date software).
I feel it is also associated with the USB connection itself (for a longer explanation of why I believe this to be so http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=915410&tstart=0 ).
I hope that some of the above helps.

  • I have a 30 gb ipod formatted for windows  I would like to reformat for a macbook

I have a 30 GB ipod formatted for windows How can it be reformatted to work with my macbook?

This process will delete all songs in your iPod. (Sorry if I sound like some outcountry Helpdesk)
But you can transfer Windows iTunes library to your Macbook.
    1. Connect to your Macbook, close iTunes if it opened up.
    2. Open up Disk Utility, select Checksum CRC
    3. Select your iPod icon.
    4. Click on Erase tab
    5. Select  Mac OS X Journal format
    6. Press Erase button and wait for about 20 minutes
When it finishes, Itunes will  launch and prompt for Restore, so just follow the prompts.
    Have a nice day!

  • Format a Mac iPod for Windows

    Hi,
I have a 5th gen video iPod that I formatted for Mac, but now I want to format it for Windows instead. I have followed the articles on the site on how to restore, how to format for windows, and looked at the posts here as well, but NONE of those WORK. My Windows machine will not see the iPod from iTunes or anywhere in Windows. How do I just wipe the iPod clean and start over on Windows? I cannot get Windows to see the iPod with iTunes. I cannot get Windows to see the iPod to even erase the drive. Where do I go besides the standard articles on the Apple site that say to restore it (because they all assume that iTunes can see the iPod to restore it).
    Thanks,
    Brian

Anyone? Reformat a 5th gen Mac iPod to Windows when it won't show up on a Windows machine using USB.

  • Re-format iPod from Windows to Mac without losing songs/restoring...?

I have a 5th generation iPod video that was originally formatted with my old Dell PC laptop - I have just recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to format/update my iPod for it to work properly with my new Mac.
How can I go about doing this without having to restore my factory settings and losing all of my songs?
    Please let me know, thanks...

The windows formatted iPod should still work on the MacBook Pro, now make sure you hold down Command + Option when you connect the iPod and continue holding them until they are completely mounted. What this does is does not allow the computer to update the iPod, and if a pop-up comes up, do not allow it to update the iPod. Now, we can back-up the songs. Yamipod is great for this.
    Yamipod --> http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
Now, if you still have your old computer, i suggest using your iPod in disk mode to put all your songs on it, and import them into iTunes on your Macbook Pro, and to re-format the iPod so that it will be Mac formatted.

  • Can an iPod formatted for Macs play on Windows iTunes?

I have an iPod formatted for a Mac but have to use a Windows computer at work. Is there a way to play my iPod through the Windows iTunes player? I tried plugging it int through a USB adaptor, but my computer doesn't trecognize my iPod.
    Thanks!

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews, you can find it at this link: XPlay 2
XPlay is currently only compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98SE, a new version for Vista is planned for release later this year.
