IPod freeze upon connection to PC

Very frequently when I connect my 80gb iPod video to my PC, the iPod freezes at the "Do Not Disconnect Screen" and I have to disconnect it from my PC and reset it.
This has happened both when I have had iTunes open on my PC prior to connection and when I haven't had iTunes open.
After I disconnect the iPod and reset it, I can connect it and it works ok, but this is happening too frequently and I'd like to find out if there is a solution to the problem. Any suggestions?

That just happened - How do I reset the ipod? It's stuck on do not disconnect.

  • IPod Freezing when connected to computer

My problem seems to be similar to all of the other problems people are having with iTunes 7, but I couldn't find something the same as mine, so here's my problem. Whenever I connect my iPod to by Powerbook G4 (this is only after i installed iTunes 7, my ipod shows the 'Do Not Disconnect,' but freezes - the circle with the cross does not flash. I proceed to reset the iPod, after which I can connect to my computer with no problems (iTunes 7 is really annoying, but i assume an update soon?????).
Is my problem an issue with iTunes 7 and will be solved with the supposed update, or does anyone know what might be causing it.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Everyone.
I've been having the same problem. i have a 5G ipod.. i did the latest firmware update a while back, and the iTunes 7 update. After that, whenever i connect the ipod to a mac, i see the red circle with a line through, and its not flashing, then the ipod is locked up. only way to make it work is reset the ipod while its connected..
I tried a full restore, and that did not help.. then I pretty much gave up, and hoped that Apple would release new firmware.
In a last attempt of hope, i thought i would connect the ipod to my new makbook pro.. just to see if it was a problem with the imac. well, same again. ugh. rats..!
So, i tried a full restore from this 'new' computer..
This time, i noticed something different.. iTunes decided to download the firmware again, and re-flash the iPod.. (with the same version)
ah.. now it works !!! i went back to the imac.. connected it.. loaded up all my tunes.. and it works.. disconnect.. plug back in.. no freeze !!!!
So, it seems that if you can try another mac, and restore.. or indeed get the firmware to download again, and apply to the iPod.. it just might work !!!
Hope this helps some folks out!
    Cheers, Keith

  • IPod freezes on connect

Every time I connect my 3rd gen iPod to my computer (Powerbook G4 15" 1.25 GHz OS X 10.4.10, iTunes 7.5), my iPod freezes. I have to reset the iPod by holding the center button and the Menu button for a while, and then my iPod connects after it comes out of reset. Bit of a pain - doesn't seem right to have to reset it all the time. Anyone else seen this? This didn't use to happen, but I don't know what the change was that precipitated it. I'm on the latest iTunes 7.5. Not sure if that's when it started.

I was intrigued by your response because I'd tried a reset/reload and hadn't fixed it.
However, I've now just tried it using your method - restoring from Disk Mode - and my preliminary results are that it appears to resolve the problem.
For anyone else interested, the steps I took were:
    1) Charge the iPod up
    2) Reset the iPod (SELECT+MENU).
    3) When the Apple logo appears, release MENU and hold PLAY+SELECT to go to Disk Mode
    4) Connect iPod to PC, wait for iTunes to load & recognise it
    5) Use the "Restore" button to reset the iPod to factory settings. Accept all the "Are you sure?" nonsense
    6) Re-synchronise or copy your music/photos/videos back onto the iPod using iTunes
    7) Disconnect iPod
    8) Play some tunes, watch some videos etc
    8) Now re-connect the iPod. It should now synchronise nicely with iTunes rather than hanging....

  • IPod freezes after connecting to PC/iTunes

I think it's a common problem that iPods freeze after plugging in the USB cable. I don't know if it's working for others, but if i do a reset (hold menu plus select) on the iPod while it is plugged and iTunes is running it works. But i have to do this every time i plug it in... So much to years of software development...

"All of my songs that were numbered or had numbers in the title are not at the bottom of the songs list instead of being the first songs listed."
I assume you meant to say "now" at the bottom of the list?
Unfortunately, like it or not this how the latest version of iTunes sorts songs. Numbers now appear at the end of the listings.

  • IPod Syncs Upon Connecting to USB - but not After

Hi, I believe this issue is related to my itunes, and not to my nano, for no other reason that the same problem has happened with both my iPod Nano Video; and the brand new Nano 4th gen (or whatever Gen is brand new right now)
I plug iPod into USB - iPod syncs as usual - and becomes ready for disconnect as usual.
But, if I go to make any syncing changes to my ipod - or any changed to my ipod at all whatsoever - and then try to RE-Sync it - no dice.
The display on my nano does not change - it stays on the regular menus - as if it's not connected.
My iTunes video says "Syncing iPod. Do Not Disconnect." - but it's not. It hangs - and itunes freezes up. Eventually (after about 3 minutes) an error will finally pop up.
The error reads: iPod cannot be synced the required disc cannot be found
So - here are the steps I have taken to try and resolve this issue -
    I have reset my iPod.
    I have restored my iPod.
I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes.
    I have re-installed iTunes.
I have changed the ipod settings in itunes so that it does not sync ipods upon initally connecting them. This merely allowed me to sync the ipod zero times instead of the initial 1 time.
What can I do, I'm ready to go crazy? Please tell me there is a solution for this.

I'm not sure if it will help either of you, but i've just spent the past 35 minutes on the phone to a helpful man at apple.
My particular problem was caused by the USB ports. I appear only to have USB 1.1 on the front two ports of my machine and USB 2.0 on the back two.
Newer iPods he said, required USB 2.0 to work. So if either of you are plugging them into the front of your machine, try the back ports for a change. You never know
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod freezing during connection to mac

I have a 3rd gen ipod and powerbook G4 with an external harddrive Lacie 80gb which now contains my itunes library. The problem I am having is in updating my ipod library. Each time I connect to the lacie drive (with firewire connection, it recognizes the ipod and starts to update it but it invariably freezes during this update. The ipod remains frozen as does the itunes program. I have to force quit the itunes and eject the ipod and then soft reset. When I then reattach it, it is not recognized by the itunes and I have to reinstall the update to get it to work. Unfortunately this erases all the music and I restart the process only to have it all happen again. I have tried manual update to no avail.
This may be related to the fact that I have moved my library to the external drive or that I am using the external firewire.
    Frustrated. Can anyone help?

    Hi John,
I have a very similar problem, but no solution yet. Maybe my experiences can sombody give some hint:
At home I have the G4 model displayed below. It is alway kept up to date. Last time my iPod was updated with the songs in the iTunes library there was around 6th December 05. Everything went fine then.
Next time I tried to update the iPod songlist, was about two weeks ago. The iPod would freeze this time, hanging and later crashing iTunes and the Finder (iPod could not be ejected). After several tries I thought it would be a good idea to restore the factory settings. So I tried that using the newest iPod Updater 2005-11-17. The Updater was not able to restore the settings. Finally I gave up.
Then I took the iPod to the office where I use a Mac Mini (it is kept up to date as well). I tried to restore the factory settings there and it worked like a charm. Back at home the iPod still would not sync with my PM G4. Listening to the sounds the iPod made during the first seconds of syncing revealed a repeated clicking as if the hard drive was bad.
So I took it to Apple's tech-geeks and told them the hard drive must have gone bad. They tested the iPod thoroughly, but did not find anything wrong. Especially the hard drive was ok.
Now I have it back here, but it still would not sync to my PM G4. Does anybody have any idea? I should perhaps mention, that the system on the PM has only been updated from 10.2 an, whereas the system on the Mini has been installed 10.4 out of the box.

  • IPod freezes when connected to PC

This might be related to a problem i have with some songs not playing, but now when i connect my ipod to the computer to sync it just freezes - not charging or syncing. Could anyone help with this problem?

yeah this is still happening, and it won't sync any of my music, it will only charge it. could anyone help at all?

  • IPod freezing on connect...

Ok, so when I connect my iPod to my computer, it just freezes on the "recharge" icon. So I left it like that for a little while, and all of a sudden it started up, then for like 2 seconds flashed a message about a low battery, then went back to the frozen recharge signal! Eek! And it just did it again... Is it supposed to be doing that and will it resolve itself? I know it's really quite dead because I accidently forgot to put on the hold when I placed it in my bag the other day. :S

Ok, so it solved itself! I just left it connected and it eventually just connected. I think it was probably because it was so dead, it just had to get a little bit more juice in it before it could do anything!

  • IPOD freeze when connect to Mac

have a 80 gig 5th gen IPOD and every time I connect it to my Mac (OS X) it freezes.
The computer seems to recognize something it's being attached but it doesn't show up in Itunes and the "Do Not Disconnect" pops up on the IPOD. However, it will flash once and then freeze up. I have to restart the IPOD while it's connected to the computer to get it working and connected.
This is a MAJOR pain. Does anyone know a solution to this?
Software on both sides is up to date.

I have the same problem with mine - 5th generation. I can get it to reset by unhooking it from the computer "even though it says do not disconnect." Then I push and hold the wheel and menu buttons. That may take a couple of tries. I get it to reset. But can't hook up to iTunes and download new songs and books. It will charge though. Not sure what is going on. I have the latest update etc. Just started doing this in July. Wish someone would post the reason and the fix.

  • Windows freezes upon connection

I just got a 30GB 5thG iPod today and haven't been able to install it yet. I installed the iTunes software first and restarted my computer and when it was "all ready" I plugged my Ipod into the 4-port USB2.0 cardbus slot on my laptop and made Windows sluggish, and subsequent times I tried it, it froze altogether. I can't even get it to find the new hardware without freezing, in which case resetting the iPod will unfreeze it. Keep in mind I haven't installed the drivers yet.
    How can I fix this?

Are you sure the USB you have is 2.0?
I was having the same problem connecting to USB 1.1 on my PC. I installed A USB 2.0 adapter in my PC and plug the iPod into it. Now my PC does not freeze and the iPod works perfectly.
Try removing the USB ports in hardware manager and then reinstall making sure you have the most current drivers.

  • Ipod freezes when connected to computer and cannot restore

When I connect my ipod to my computer itunes does not recognise it for a long time, when it does it says the ipod may be corrupted and to do a restore. So I click restore, and the warning message comes up about erasing the songs. I click yes then an error message comes up saying that the resource is not available. When I click eject, the ipod dissapears from the source list but the do no disconnect thing stays on the ipod screen and dosent even flash.
My ipod has not been recognized by itunes since the latest update, so I uninstalled the ipod driver and this problem has been happening since

If you look through the forum there appear to thousand of people who have this problem. Here's what we know so far:-
    1. The problem is related to iTunes v7 and the firmware v1.2 on later ipods.
    2. it is a bug in the firmware that gives any/all of the following symptoms
    - freezes after re-set
    - freezes during restore
    - cannot sync
    - cannot eject
    - cannot switch off
    - basically CANNOT USE IPOD AT ALL
    3. the problem appears to have been known to apple for at least a couple of weeks but they have not found a solution and for the time being they have also chosen to not even acknowledge the problem to re-assure users that their hardware is OK and a software fix is on the way.
    4. Contentious posts are being deleted by Apple (I have already had 2 removed so get this one while it's hot)
    keep the pressure up!!!
They will have to acknowledge it and fix it

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod and ipod freezes when connected via USB

My ipod has developed a problem.
    1. When hooked up to a computer it suddenly is not recognized by the computer--there is no "sync" noise and it odesn't appear in itunes. Also, all the buttons cease to function.
    2. Interestingly, it still works fine in my Boise player and also when in the car via audio cable.
    3. When i unplug it from the computer it works fine again.
    4. I tried a manual reset into disk mode hoping that i could "start over." Bad idea--still no connection AND now everything is off it.
Any ideas to help with this?
    Thanks a ton.

I have tried with two different cords and in different USB ports. I think it is an ipod problem, not a computer problem.

  • 20G iPOD freezes when connecting to home stereo and other components

When i connect my iPOD to my home stereo through a docking station the iPOD buttons become disfunctional. it only plays one song and then it "shuts down". Not really shuts down because the iPOD is still on and as soon as i remove it from the docking station, it works fine again. Any ideas?

"However, most of the cables I find use the headphone output. "
Yep, thats fine, just get one of those!
MiniJack (3.5mm; small headphone output) - L/R Cinch Audio Jack, as you say.

  • Ipod freezing when connecting to pc

i just purchased a 30 gig ipod this summer, but when i plug it into my pc, the ipod lights up and freezes on the first menu...the ipod stays on this screen until the batteries drain. This has happened all but one time when plugging it in.
i can't even turn it off when its frozen.
    any help??

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC

  • ITunes freezes upon connecting 3rd gen Shuffle

    Hello,
Had my Shuffle for about 18 months and has worked fine but recently when I tried plugging it into my laptop to charge it, iTunes just freezes. Upon removing the Shuffle it begins working again and just says that it isn't possible to sync to the shuffle at this time. If I leave it in to charge despite this problem, it usually goes to a bluescreen after around 10 minutes.
Tried reinstalling iTunes and and have also reset my laptop to factory settings (unrelated reason but thought it might help anyway).
Any help would be appreciated as I'm getting really sick of the same songs.
    Thanks

    never mind, problem solved
