IPod Freezes in "Settings" and isnt recognized by my computer

on the main screen, when i spin the wheel down to settings, it freezes up. after about 10 seconds it displays "0 kb free" on the right. i have no idea why this happens. all other features appear to work fine. the other issue is that now my laptop doesnt recognize it.
i use it as an external hard drive as well as an mp3 player and i suspect i might have tried to put more files on the drive than there was space. its just a guess. but since i cant read it on my computer i have no way to try to fix it. any clues?
this is a 160gb classic, dont know what gen but it was the first 160gb model about 2-3 years ago if that helps.

This is almost as if neither Windows nor Linux is recognizing the format of your Hard Drive. This can happen if your iPod Classic was formatted using the Mac OSx option. I see that you have Windows in your profile so I am assuming that the iPod Classic was formatted using Windows. If that is the case then the Hard Drive may have failed.
There is a way to to a diagnosis on the hard drive. If the above does not work then perform the [*_Hard Drive Diagnosis as indicated in this discussion thread_*|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11542633&#11542633] . Please pay particular attention to the post made by TuringTest2 where he explains with detail of what one should be looking for. The Reallocation of the Hard Disk Space is the key. The greater the number the higher the indication that the Hard Drive is failing.
You know, reformatting may be the only option left if neither of your Operating Systems are recognizing the format on your iPod Classic.

Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
Error 1600, 1601, 1602

Ipod touch is "malfunctioning and not recognized" by my computer

When I plug in the touch (4th gen) to my pc I get the message that "a device connected to this computer has malfuctioned and is not recognized."
On top of that, the touch won't sync to my account wirelessly so new music I purchased will not download to it. I can't even access the itunes store from the touch. It keeps wanting my to reenter my password over and over when I try to view my account. I've tried to update the operating system, but there is no updates available tab in my settings-general. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

TS1538 my ipod touch 4g isn't being recognized by the computer nor Itunes.

Just recieved a brand new replacement ipod nano 7th generation and when plugged in to computer it is not registering on computer or with itunes, I have tried resetting ipod. I have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled itunes. I have tried various cables and know they are compatible for charging the ipod, what else could it be?

I just got my ipod touch and macbook today. When i press the button on top of the ipod, it wont do anything. Also, when i plug the ipod into my macbook and my other PC, they both dont recognize it. Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about your iPod. If you're close to an Apple store, then I'd definitely take it in and have them look at it, especially if it won't turn on when it's plugged into the MacBook or the PC. Even if the battery was drained out (unlikely on a brand new iPod), it should start up when it's getting power from the USB bus.
It's probably best to check out this list of Apple Stores:

Pick the one closest to you, then make a reservation at the Genius Bar. It's been a while since I had to do that, but I think I had to wait until after midnight, or maybe until around 6 AM the day I wanted to go in.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

IPod freezing on iHome. Not recognized by PC.

My iPod is freezing every time I play it through the iHome. I have had the iHome with no problems for about 6 months and the iPod for just over a year. My computer won't recognize that it's connected anymore and it won't even make it to the 'do not disconnect' screen when I plug it in. It displays the apple, lists the support site with the sad iPod and then freezes on a picture of a battery charging, but it's not animated. It's fully charged, as far as I know. I use an iHome and it doesn't freeze when charging on there, though it will freeze when playing from it. Not when I'm playing it through the headphones.
I have tried resetting it, but it will go to the sad icon and freeze after that.
Also, I noticed an odd sound from the hard drive inside. It almost sounds like it's skipping.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

2 problems, iPod nano battery depleted and not recognized by Windows, help!

Earlier this morning. At first when I connected the usb to the computer I got the screen in the nano that said "apple.com/ipod/support" or something like that, with the folder/exclamation mark icon. It was charging but I disconnected it cause I had to go. I tried to do the same at night but this time is when it's totally dead, and not recognized at all. What can I do now?
I havent used the nano in a while and the battery is depleted, so I tried to charge it but neither windows or itunes or the updater/restore recognize it.
I'm on a laptop, I already tried most of the stuff in the faqs but it wont work.

ok, i have a 4th gen 40gb ipod which worked fine until i upgraded to itunes 5. now my ipod shows a folder with !, songs skip, and it freezes after 5 songs.disk mode didnt help either, as it didnt show up on my computer even though the ipod displayed do not disconnect. I found a fix for it. it sounds dangerous and crude, but it worked for me, and some other people. plug your ipod into your computer and it will say dont disconnect, and your comp probably will be locked up like normal until ipod loads, then take your ipod, and hit it on its side on a hard surface. do it while you hear the Hard drive spinning. NO JOKE. my ipod started working right after. however, the sound is really crappy now, but i was at least able to backup my files, and i'm going to use my warrenty to get a new one. the reason this works is beacuse somehoew the hd pin is out of place, and you can hear it clicking. hitting it will get it back in place. i know this sounds crazy, but trust me, it will stop skipping songs and freezing, and will appear on your computer. I warn you however, if you break your ipod doing this, dont blame me, i'm just saying this because it worked for me. give it a try if nothing else works. hope this helps. itunes 5 was really bad. anyone know where to get itunes 4.9, that was fine for me, and i had a separate podcasting program anyway.

I tried entering the serial number onto the apple website, but it says my iPod had not been registered (although I have registered it!).
Anyway, I phoned apple support and they told me to go to depot.info.apple.com/ipod and fill in a service request. Unfortunately it said that my iPod is out of warranty, so I had to phone again to get them to update their records about the and they are sending out a service box in the next few days
I think I'm definately going to take out the applecare service now!

Ipod freezes on syncing and won't unfreeze until battery dies

my friend has an 80 gig ipod classic that freezes when she plugs it into her computer to sync it. when she unplugs the ipod, it says "corrupted" and is completely frozen. She has to wait until the battery dies and then charge it again to be able to use it.

Have You tried the restart...when it freezes up. that might help. its two buttons Menu and the centre, press them at the same time...Try Restarting the ipod before you connect it other than that you might want to consult your closest apple store geek. There is a disk mode and try restarting then pressing Centre and Play/Pause button when it shows the apple sign might work. I had one that did that, but thats because i washed it in the washer machine three times. now it works great. but dont go do that. Or it may be your computer USB cable. just holla back if you still cant figure it out- oh and if you want to take it outta disk mode, just restart again. and it should work. other than that consult a geek.
But if you need some advise, it (ipod) might need to be restored and you can do that on your itunes. just click the ipod when it comes up and there should be a button that says "Restore". i hope she has all her music and movies on her hard drive.
