IPod freezes my mac during updating!

I'm trying to update a new iPod I've gotten (60g photo same as my wife has) and for some reason, it updates about half-way and then freezes. I can't force-quit iTunes or eject my iPod and I have to power down my iMac for a re-start.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Lawrence

I guess I'm going to try calling Apple Support line. If anyone thinks of anything, please let me know.
Thanks

  • IPod/iTunes 6 hangs during updating

    I've just spent most of a weekend trying to figure out why a 40GB click-wheel iPod will not sync with iTunes. I'm at a bit of a loss here. I know there are several (long) posts on update issues - perhaps this is just another case. Here's the low-down:
    Gear:
    * iPod 40GB 'click-wheel' model, 3.1 firmware (2005-09-23 update), firewire interconnect direct to iMac (no dock)
    * iMac G4 1GHz, OS X 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.1, about 1600 songs
    Symptom:
    iPod appears on the desktop and can browse folders. iTunes starts. Hangs during iTunes update on a random song. Usually <20 into the list - but sometimes anything up to song 1000. Flashing 'do not disconnect' symbol freezes on iPod LCD, iMac hangs (Activity Monitor indicates a >90% cpu load on iTunes process, generally requires a 'hard' restart to recover the iMac - even after force-quitting the iTunes process).
    Tried:
    * Reset iPod
    * Restore iPod with 3.1
    * Restore iPod with 3.0.2 (2005-06-26)
    * iPod into disk mode and restore
    * iPod disk verify and erase using OS X Disk Utility, restore firmware
    * New firewire cable
    * iPod into diagnostics mode - run most tests including HDD scan (all pass)
    * iMac disk permissions verify/fix
    * Delete iTunes preferences and restart - library rebuilds
    * Copy music to a new location, delete all iTunes data, now start afresh and
    use add to library to rebuild library
    * Removed songs and entire albums that sync freezes on (just freezes on
    another song)
    * Checked out iMac firewire ports with iSight
    * Discussed with Apple Tech guy at Genius bar, agreed pretty much all steps
    had been covered. iPod exchanged believing something like iPod connector
    to be the issue. No difference.
    So I'm pretty much convinced at this stage the issue lies with the iMac software. iPod and cable have been thoroughly investigated and changed out. iMac firewire ports work with iSight.
    I've seen some posts suggesting deleting and restrong from the 10.3.9 update the iPod driver (iPodDriver.kext). This seems pretty drastic! I'm hesitant to go get a Tiger upgrade - this should work with 10.3.9.
    Apologies for the long post - but I'd be interested to hear views at this point.
    Thanks

    Hey, you the man. I just want to say thank you. I hooked up a just repaired touch wheel iPod to my son's g4 iMAC, and it kept hanging on random songs and even the one's it transferred, it did slowly. I tried everything everyone else has, I did restores and erases forever. And it kept hanging up, so I had to frequently disconnect the iPod to get control back of the computer. This morning I was on the phone with Apple tech for over an hour. His conclusion was that because some of the songs weren't purchased from the Apple Store, I needed to manually transfer each song one at a time. I had to go, so didn't get to try it until later today and same problem. Again I called Apple tech support. Guy was very nice, on phone with him for 90 minutes, he didn't think the first advice made much sense. He gave up in frustration when we couldn't get into the disk utility because iPod kept going to automatic update. He told me to call back tomorrow and speak to a specialist. He said he's never had this much difficulty with an iPod. After the call, I managed to get into the disk utillity and do the erase and repair but didn't do anything. When I finally deactivated the auto update, manually transferring the songs one at a time didn't solve the problem. I read your post, started up after disconnecting the iSight firewire cable, took a chance of activating auto update of songs again, and voila, it transferred all the songs (all 176 of them) in about 10 seconds, like a warm knife through butter. And as they said on Saturday Night Live, it felt "like butter." I will call Apple tomorrow and tell them they really need to do something about this. In the meantime, I'll keep iSight disconnected whenever songs are being transferred into the iPod.
    Again, your advice is much appreciated. Thank you for the post.

  • IPod recognized, but hangs during update

    So my iPod will show up in Finder and in iTunes, and automatic updating will begin. However, at random times during the update, sometimes 4 songs in, sometimes 65, the whole process will just hang. iTunes status screen gets stuck on flashing between "Updating iPod..." and Song 65 of 2054 and just flash between those two over and over.
    Meanwhile, the iPod screen itself is also stuck and no longer flashing "Do Not Disconnect" -- it's a steady screen with none of the normal flashing.
    Tried resetting, doesn't do anything.
    Tried restoring, and it hangs after Authenticate asks me for my password to Restore the iPod.
    I wind up having to just force disconnect and force quit everything and restart.
    Anybody else have this problem? Thanks for any help you can give.
    Oh btw, OS 10.3.9, iTunes 4.9, iBook G4.

    I am having the same issue where it hangs during update -- seems to always happen around the 1800th song. Here's more specifics:
    -I've got 7000 songs in my Library
    -my iTunes Music folder is located on an external FireWire HD
    My Mac has no problems mounting the iPod. No problems restoring with iPod Updater. No problems with erasing using Disk Utility.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Resetting and then restoring via iPod Updater.
    2. Erasing/reformatting via Disk Utility, including zeroing out all data, and then restoring via iPod Updater.
    3. Resetting into Disk Mode.
    4. Manually updating songs.
    5. Automatcially updating songs.
    Nothing works. I have been troubleshooting this for about 8 hours now with no luck. No matter what I do differently, it always hangs around song 1800. I even tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes -- and I have tried this with several different user accounts and on different partitions I have set up.
    When it "hangs," the iPod itself just makes a the "clicking" sound of a HD. I'm wondering if the HD is just bad -- but it came up with no errors when checking with Disk Utility.
    Any more suggestions?
    Johnny

  • HT4972 ipod touch locked up during update and will not restore

    My son was given an ipod touch by his cousin.  He used it for a while and then decided to update the os.  We followed the instructions but during the restore process the ipod shows the picture of cable connecting to itunes.  It is connected but itunes does not see it and I can not get it to do anything else.  I went to the apple store and spoke with them and they told me to do a hard reset and try again.  I did to no avail.  Does anyone have an idea of how to repair this???

  • Ipod 2nd gen frozen during update and will no longer sync

    So I was updating my ipod software and then an error message popped up. Now my ipod is frozen with the apple logo and an empty bar. Itunes no longer recognizes it either. I don't know what to do...

    I would try putting it in recovery mode. See:

  • Ipod connection with PC during update

    Itunes keeps returning to the Apple logo part way through updating and Ipod connection disappears from Itunes. Ipod however thinks it is still connected and safely remove hardware won't turn it off. Battery seems to be fully charged. Does anyone know if this is a PC problem or Ipod and what to do?? Do I need to restore?

    Aaaah, Suzanne.
    I'm glad you write. I've been worried about you.
    I have 26 pages of notes of things that I've tried to fix this problem.
    Most recently I wiped out all apple software and reinstalled the software that came with my first iPod. I had uninstalled and reinstalled only down to version 4.7 prior to this. Going down to version 4.2 wiped out my music file database completely (songs still there but none of the very time consuming info like bpm, comments, subgroups, etc). I was heartbroken.
    I spent a few hours today installing and testing other sync software like Winamp, MusicMatch, and windows media player software to synch to my iPod...and then had to decide if I wanted to convert protected m4p music to m4a or not. I don't want to have to resort to this, but I've already spent over 60 hours at my computer fixing this connection problem to no avail. It would be a help if Apple gave us more technical information to help us figure this out.
    My brother has an iPod with this problem and he is just going to wait for a fix...he still has music on his. Mine was wiped out following the advise by Apple to Restore it.

  • Ipod freezes during sync then error that it cant read file...

    A little pre-info... I have owned a black 30gb 5th gen (video) Ipod for a couple of years now. I plug it in fine, my computer recognizes it fine, Itunes works fine with it... everything works great.
    I just bought another Ipod off ebay that is exact as mine except white- auction states the Ipod works fine, seller has awesome feedback, etc.. I bought this for a gift for my sister for Christmas. It is second hand, so warranty is expired.
    I plug it in the computer, and first tried to transfer some normal text data via explorer. I had put this same data on my own black Ipod with no issues, words fine. The white? Lo and behold I get that "Data Cycle Redundancy" error during copy. My experience is that that has always meant that the original file is messed up, not the destination its being copied too... but in this case I know the original file(s) were/are ok.
    And the Ipod freezes. So I safely unplug, and try to hard reset it. It wouldnt for a bit, and I noticed the Ipod was rather warm (but this might be because it was frozen for several minutes with the backlight still on as well). Finally I get it to reset. Same stuff happens again, again its hard to reset.
    So then I decide screw it, forget adding the stuff via explorer, Ill just try to get the music on my computer at least, over via Itunes, after I first restore the Ipod.
    Itunes opens... recognizes the Ipod... I go to copy music, and it copies until it essentially 'freezes'. I tried many times - its not a bad file because the same file would copy the other times Id try. It would freeze on any random file, during the write process.
    Then Itunes comes up with this error:
    "the ipod cannot be synced. the required file cannot be found"
    I dont think this is referring to my files trying to be copied, they werent deleted or moved from their location since importing into the Itunes library. Im wondering if theres a system type file on the Ipod that Itunes speaks to as it transfers...and when the Ipod freezes... hence it cant be found...
    At the same time I get this error from Itunes, I get a Windows XP bubble pop up that says:
    "Delayed Write Failed - Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
    Now again, my computer/windows is NOT the issue. Its the Ipod.
    All the advice I have searched says to fix things on my computer. That includes that Apple support page in regards to those errors - it points the finger at my USB ports, etc - and thats simply not the case. If it was, my other Ipod wouldnt be working either - nor would my flash drives.
    Its the white Ipod.
    I saw one site suggest to format the Ipod via Windows first, then do the Itunes restore, but the Ipod froze and Windows couldnt format.
    I went into Device Manager and compared the two Ipod settings, both share the same settings. They are not set on 'enable write cache'.
    I have tested the HD via Diagnostics, and the BL blinked after the test, showing the HD passed... so right now I can only think of three things... a bad logic board perhaps, or the Ipod system files are corrupt somehow no matter how many times I do the restore... should I revert to an older update; is that even possible. Or the HD is bad after all and its just being missed in the test.
    So now... I need help. Am I missing something important? Is it a simple fix... a corrupt file thats freezing the Ipod somewhere - or did I get a bad Ipod from the seller.
    Its so close to Christmas, if there was some simple fix(instead of it being a bad HD) I could fix it myself, Id rather do that than go through the hassle of returns/refunds. Not to mention, its always a gamble how the seller will react. Will they help, or say its not a problem on their end and try to screw me... then Ill have to go through Paypal for reimbursement and that takes 90 days at least...

    I wish I had good news but all I have is information. I have access to 4 5th gen ipods. 2 black 30s and 1 white 30 and 1 black 80. The one white and one of the blacks work and have worked flawlessly for the past two years. The other black 30 and 80 started having the issue mentioned here some time after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried to lowlevel format the iPod drive to fix any issues and that didn't cure the problem. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago and restored my ipod to Mac format and low and behold it would accept files again! However it wouldn't let me fill the ipod beyond about halfway, this was on both ipods. Now the ipods have become slowly less and less fillable. Seems like syncing rather than putting the songs on manually seems to help, but again its getting worse all the time. (the two ipods that don't have any problems belong to my girls and the problem ones belong to my son and i) <- Grasping at straws I know, but my son and I are constantly changing the songs, playlists, videos and such.
    When I bought my Mac the guys at the Apple store were shocked that I was having this problem and practically begged me to bring it in so they could see what it wrong with it. I will post an update when i do that.

  • 5th Gen iPod freezes on "Do Not Disconnect" screen when connected to Mac

    My iPod freezes on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen (partially backlit) when I plug it into my computer. I have a G4 eMac with standard USB connections. The ipod firmware is up to date.
    This freeze doesn't occur ALL the time....just occasionally. The iPod does not appear on my desktop or in iTunes when this happens. I have to wait until the iPod discharges its battery completely before I can use it again (this sometimes takes a couple of days!).
    Does anyone have any ideas? Or is anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks....

    Thanks for the replies.........I can't seem to find a solution to this....its annoying to say the least. Its just happened again this morning, though it's successfully sync'd on the last few occasions....it seems to be quite random.
    One thing I've noticed is that it synced OK when iTunes wasn't open when I plugged it in. It appeared on the desktop, then I opened iTunes. This morning though it froze when iTunes was already open, so there may be an issue with iTunes (I updated this weekend to see if it was any different with the new version). I guess this will happen if you've got the ipod set to open iTunes automatically when connected too.
    So, no solutions as yet.......I'm gonna get onto Apple to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all on this one.
    PS: why no firewire capabilities on the new ipods?

  • Ipod freezes when i update

    When i update my ipod (plug it into the firewire port) it freezes and won't update. Itunes works but thinks I don't have an ipod connected. I just installed the new version (6.0.4). In the last version I would try to update it and it would download about 20 song at a time then stop. I'm about ready to kill my computer so please help if you can. Thanks

    I am having a similar problem. I sent my iPod to Apple and they send me a new one. The new one was fine until I tried to update my iPod. Then it had the same problem. I just hooked it up to my mom's computer with an older version of iTunes and iPod updater. My iPod now works fine, but I have my mom's music on it and not mine. Arrrgggg!!!

  • IPod freezing when updating music/copying files

    In the past few months I bought a new Mac Mini. When transferring files from my Mac at work and my roommate's PC at home, using the disk use option on my iPod, it would start to copy the files and stop part of the way through and freeze. There's no way to stop it once it freezes and I end up having to restart my computer. I have tried resetting the iPod to factory settings and reinstalling all my music. I'm using the latest iPod software and running iTunes 6.0.1. When it updates my songs, it does the same thing where it may get about 1000 songs in and then it locks up. When I restart the machine, it has to start from the beginning. The only way around this problem I found was to stop it every couple hundred songs and restart the update. It still freezes when using disk use if the files are big enough. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does it require servicing or is there something I should be doing?
    Thanks!!!

    I have been having a similar issue with my iPod since December. Whenever I plug the iPod into my computer to update the songs, it freezes after 20, 30, 40 songs or so. But I think I've discovered the source of the problem, at least in my case, so I thought I'd share it in case it helped anyone else.
    I got an AirClick remote for the iPod for Christmas, which I use in the car. But for the sake of convenience, I've been leaving the receiver plugged in to the top of the iPod instead of removing it when I'm not using it. And ever since, it's been freezing when I update songs, but I never made the connection until yesterday. When I remove the AirClick receiver before docking the iPod to my computer, it updates as many songs as I would like (even thousands at a time) without freezing.
    So if you have any devices plugged in to the top of your iPod, even the headphone remote, I would recommend disconnecting them before connecting the iPod to your computer.
    Hope this helps somebody!

  • Hello. Today, I was updating my iPod Touch 4th Generation to iOS 6. I unplugged the iPod when it was during the installation because it appeared to be frozen. Now the iPod is stuck at a light blue screen even after I reset it. How do I fix it?

    Hello. Today, I was updating my iPod Touch 4th Generation to iOS 6. I unplugged the iPod when it was during the installation because it appeared to be frozen. Now the iPod is stuck at a light blue screen even after I reset it. How do I fix it?

    You will need to do a DFU restore by holding the home and power buttons down (while the device is plugged in to your computer) until the device's screen goes black and as soon as the screen goes black, count down from 3 and release the power/sleep button, but keep holding down the home button. Then, iTunes will say the iPod needs to be restored. The restore process will take some time and even though the iPod may appear to be frozen, don't interrupt the restore.

    Ipod touch 4th gen was accidentally disconnected from laptop during update process. Now permanent screen pic is of the power cord w/ an arrow pointing up to itunes symbol. Holding the ctr & power buttons together for 6-10 sec causes apple pic to briefly appear and power cord/itunes pic reappears. Powering off and on has same effect. Attempting to reset.

    It sounds like the iPod touch is in Recovery Mode, Try to restore it from iTunes again.
