IPod freezes when I plug it into iTunes

Everytime I try and update my iPod with iTunes, not only does it not appear on my computer, my iPod itself freezes. I've tried rebooting my computer, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and holding Menu and Select on my iPod. My iPod unfreezes when I unplug it from my computer, so it can't be the iPod itself.

In what way do you mean 'freezes'? Do you mean that it freezes on the menu screen, or simply puts up the 'do not disconnect' sign and is not recognised by the computer?
I had a problem with mine doing this at first too. Try not opening iTunes, but allow your computer to recognise your iPod and open it automatically. Leave them together for a while, dont just expect them to connect instantly.
Also, check that your pod is connected to the USB 2.0 port, not that 1.0 port. The 2.0 port is normally found at the back of your computer, whereas the 1.0 is often at the front.
I'm not a technician and I don't have any specialist knowledge. If that hasn't helped, try contacting Apple helpdesk. Be sure to stress that this does come within their jurisdiction, as the fault is with your iPod connecting, not just iTunes recognising it!

Do you remeber the exact (or close to it) wording of the error message?
Try manually placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then try to restore
Next try DFU mode.

You can also try another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.

If you're able to contact the person who set the lock, send them this link and tell them to follow its instructions.
If not, you can't use the device but may be able to get it refunded. Apple won't remove the lock for anyone other than the original owner(assuming they're alive.)

It is usually given as a communication error between Apple, iTunes (your computer), iPhone. Somewhere they are not communicating, so the iOS you are trying to install cannot be approved by Apple. Trouble shooting steps include, making sure you have Current iTunes installed, make sure your Hosts file of computer is not blocking Apple. Try restoring on another computer.

The phone is unlocked with a gevey sim that goes into the sim tray with the sim card. But the phone is not jailbroken at all. What happened is I plugged it into itunes and it was working fine until I hit restore. It went through the restore process but once my phone reloaded all that comes up on the screen is the itunes logo and the usb picture plus the option to make an emergency call. I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.

Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. No such message occurs.
Are you trying to state that it says "Unable to activate"?
If so, this typically indicates the device has been hacked or jailbroken. If that is the case, no support can be provided via these forums.

IPod Touch 3rd gen 32 GB stuck in recovery mode. iTunes won't restore. When I plug it into iTunes, it calls it an iPhone.

My husband plugged his iPod Touch into the USB port on the computer and, once it charged some, iTunes didn't recognize it as his iPod (calling it an "iPhone" rather than "Ed's iPod"). It said that iTunes had detected an iPhone in recovery mode and that he had to restore it. When he clicked on 'restore' it said, "Software for this phone is not currently available. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and try again." After a few days (after the battery was fully drained again), I plugged it into a wall charger and it began to charge. I was able to fully see everything still on the iPod and even to access his apps. I let it fully charge, but when I unplugged it, it went black again and now it will not do anything. Back to a black screen and if we plug it into the computer, the same cycle starts again with it being recognized as an iPhone needing to be restored, etc.
UPDATE: So, I let the iPod fully drain again and then plugged it into the computer and iTunes. It saw it as an iPod again and said it was in recovery mode and I was able to tell it to restore it. It went through the entire process, and as the iPod was restarting, it again called it an iPhone in recovery mode. Now I can no longer see the apps and the homepage on the computer but rather it shows the Apple symbols to plug it into iTunes to set it up - but again, says it is in recovery mode but will not restore it.
Someone please help!
