Ipod Freezes when Screen Dims

I bought my ipod about 3 months ago. It was working fine and only froze once, but a couple of days ago, after updating it and updating iTunes 7, it froze again, so i pressed menu and select to do a reset, however when turned back on, after about 5 seconds of no scrolling, it froze. I did a reset again, it froze again when it was about to dim. I am unable to do a restore because it freezes the second the restore starts. Does anyone have any Ideas???

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Restoring would be the way to go in your case (may fix your iPod's issues).
I am unable to do a restore because it freezes the second the restore starts.
Do you have the latest version of the iPod Updater? If you don't, then try ejecting your iPod, upgrading to that software, connect your iPod again to try a restore.
iPod Updater
If you still cannot restore, have you tried the Five R's (other than restoring) to attempt to get your iPod to properly restored?
The Five R's
If you still cannot restore your iPod, then it may be time to send your iPod in to Apple. See this below:

i freaquently go jogging with my ipod video and it freezes almost everytime i do. no matter what i do my ipod freezes when i jog with it. does anyone know how to keep it from freezing while jogging?

Freezing like: stopping shortly and then continuing?
Or freezing like it stops and doesn't ever start again?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the iPod, jogging and other erratic movement can cause tracks to skip occasionally.

  • IPOD freezes when I run

Everytime I run my IPOD freezes up. I can reset it but only while standing still. It runs fine after being reset until I start running again. I have tried with and without hold on but it doesn't seem to matter. I have already had to have my IPOD reformatted by Apple once. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do to prevent this. Supposedly the IPOD was fine for running.

My iPod freezes when I run too. Since the original iPod I was usuing lasted 18 months, even in Iraq, I decided that it was normal wear and tear so I purchased a new iPod. However, this new iPod didn't even make it a 1/2 mile before it froze. I reset it twice and it froze again each time. This is really disappointing and I cannot beleive that Apple does not do anything about this. I can't even get a support tech to talk to me. I have contact the state's attorney general's office to see if there are any other complaints. They stated that a class action lawsuit can be a poosibility if enough people join together.
I was very happy with the iPod and even solicted other users but this to me is unacceptable. Apple should advertise that the iPod can not handle a simple task as running. They obviously know about this problem but refuse to acknowledge it b/c of the potential to lose so much business as everyone using an MP3 player to run with.

  • Ipod freezes when playing video through dock

Okay, this is a challenging one. I will be surprised if someone can help me figure this one out, but I will be very grateful!!
Picked up a brand new 60gb 5th generation video ipod the other day. 1.1 update already installed. Everything worked great. Was able to play videos through the AV dock, no problem, and was able to hook it up to the JBL stereo for the ipod, no problem.
Here is where it gets interesting. I took an avi video from my digital camera, and used Quicktime Pro to convert it into a .mov Apple Quicktime movie. I am using Windows XP. I then imported that .mov movie into itunes. Then I right clicked on the file and told itunes to convert it into the ipod format. I then hooked the ipod up to the computer, and the video was transferred to the ipod with no problems.
Then I was able to play the video with no problem on the ipod screen (not hooked up to the AV dock). Then I inserted the ipod into the AV dock that is hooked up to my tv. I played videos this way without a problem, before I loaded this new home made video. When I played the new video, I answered Yes to Tv Out, and right after that point my ipod froze up. No video played at all. Then I had to reset my ipod.
I tried this again several times, with the same result. This was now happening with regular videos that I downloaded from itunes. Also now, when I hooked the ipod up to the JBL stereo, and just tried to play a song, the ipod would freeze up. However, songs and videos play fine when the ipod is not hooked up to a dock.
It seems to me like my home made video somehow corrupted the software drivers for the port on the ipod.
Then to fix the problem, I finally had to do the dreaded RESTORE. I could not update the ipod, because I was already at version 1.1. I tried rolling back to an earlier version, but the updater told me that the update was not compatible with my ipod.
The RESTORE did fix the problem. The ipod was completely back to normal. I could hook it up to the JBL and the AV dock with no problems. Until...yes, I tried playing the home made video again. I just wanted to see if it was a fluke. Same problem came back....arrghhh!
He is another weird observation. I can start the video playing on the ipod, without it hooked up to the dock, and answer Yes to tv out. The video starts playing, then I can insert the ipod into the dock, while it is still playing, and the video plays fine on the tv, through the dock! Until the video finishes. Once the video finishes, the ipod freezes up again.
I wonder if this is a hardware problem, and I should just return my ipod. It seems like a software problem to me. I think if it is my home made video that is corrupting my ipod, I think itunes should be smart enough to not copy something to my ipod that is going to corrupt it.
Ha..ha...wow, sorry that was very long-winded. Anyone have any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 2.8ghz P4   Windows XP   2.25GB of RAM

All I can suggest is to re-encode the video as m4v with QT Pro, there might've been a problem in encoding. Also, try sending this same video (setting TV Out to Yes) with the iPod not plugged into the dock and with an Apple RCA cable, if you have one, hooked up to a TV. If that works, the dock connector might be damaged (unlikely) but it's possible. So once you've re-encoded, see if the dock situation works then. Good luck.

  • IPod freezes when I plug it into iTunes

Everytime I try and update my iPod with iTunes, not only does it not appear on my computer, my iPod itself freezes. I've tried rebooting my computer, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and holding Menu and Select on my iPod. My iPod unfreezes when I unplug it from my computer, so it can't be the iPod itself.

In what way do you mean 'freezes'? Do you mean that it freezes on the menu screen, or simply puts up the 'do not disconnect' sign and is not recognised by the computer?
I had a problem with mine doing this at first too. Try not opening iTunes, but allow your computer to recognise your iPod and open it automatically. Leave them together for a while, dont just expect them to connect instantly.
Also, check that your pod is connected to the USB 2.0 port, not that 1.0 port. The 2.0 port is normally found at the back of your computer, whereas the 1.0 is often at the front.
I'm not a technician and I don't have any specialist knowledge. If that hasn't helped, try contacting Apple helpdesk. Be sure to stress that this does come within their jurisdiction, as the fault is with your iPod connecting, not just iTunes recognising it!

  • Everything associated ipod freezes when it connects to my computer

Hi, when I connect my ipod classic to the computer I get an error message saying something is corrupted and that it's recommended to repair it. However it takes extremely long time so I ignore it.
When I connect it now everything associated with it freezes. Explorer.exe freezes when  i try to access it from my computer, Itunes freezes and other products as well.
I've tried resetting it to fabric settings and I've changed the hard drive (it was pretty fried)
I still can't do anything, it has no songs as well.
    I'm in vain please help

It does not work. I restored it and synched it again. At first it works fine, I can synch music and play it from the Ipod, but after I've synched about 1 gb of music everything freezes, and when I close the computer to be able to let it go (the only way, everything's frozen) the Ipod acts like there's no music, even though it shows as having some storage when viewing from My Computer (which is also freezes)
I turned the HD in for service (actually going back, they're giving me my money back since it didn't solve the problem) and I'm pretty certain they did their job.

  • IPod freezes when trying to sync with iTunes 6.0.4(3)!

Is anyone else having this problem?? My iPod (touch wheel) was working just fine until I updated iTunes the other night. Now it freezes when I try to sync it with iTunes! I tried resetting, restoring, checked all the updates, *****-slapping the iPod, everything. I see that others might be having the same problem -- is there a solution? Help!
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Update:
Any new news on this issue from anyone else?
I left my iPod plugged into my PowerBook over night and when I woke it was functional. However, downloads from iTunes to the iPod take almost 3x's longer than they used to and there seems to be more errors than I've ever experienced (about 1 out of every 10 interfaces). Sometimes the error is that it can't write to the drive (iPod) and sometimes the error is that it can't mount the iPod. Also when the iPod is plugged in and displayed in iTunes, the "used" and "free" info is incorrect. I completely emptied my iPod and it says that I'm using -2.80 GB (impossible unless I've created a blackhole) and it says that I have 10.49 GB (capacity, under Get Info, is listed at 9.28 - which is were it's always been - it's a gen2 10GB iPod).
Has anyone tried to format there iPod? Is this possible without harming the drive?
Well, to sum it up my iPod is working but is having errors and bugs all over the place. If anyone has any new news I'd love to hear it.
    SPECS: iPod 10GB gen2, running 1.5(?), iTunes 6.0.4, PowerBook G4 800, OS 10.4.5
    Thanks

  • Ipod freezes when viewing photos

I got a new Ipod yesterday and when I try to view the photos after uploading them to the ipod it will freeze about half way down when I view all the photos in the photo library and the last 12 months catagory. im using a macbook and the photos are stored in Iphoto.

I deleted a couple photos in the area the ipod freezes but it still freezes. Resetting it does nothing but restarts the ipod and then it still freezes when I go back and veiw the photos in through photo library and last 12 months. I created folders to group the photos to test the ipod and see if it will freeze when I view the same photos the ipod is freezing on when I veiw them in "photo library and 12 months". And the Ipod does not freeze when I view the photos in their gruoped folders. So it can't be a corrupted file, can it?

  • My ipod freezes when disconnected from computer

Help!!!! Although my ipod works when connected through itunes, once i disconnect it, it will not respond whatsoever. The screen says its in disk mode even though i never put it in disk mode. How do i get it to respond?

Reset your iPod, then put it into disk mode (doing it yourself). Connect your iPod to your computer again and what does it say to you now? "OK to Disconnect", "Charging", "Do Not Disconnect", etc...
If you want to get your iPod out of disk mode, reset it.

  • Ipod freezes when trying to import cds

This just happened a few days ago. I have been trying to import cds, but can't because the song that I am trying to import freezes. When I click quit nothing happens. Internet explorer also freezes, and I have to turn my computer off manually.
I thought it was because I recently downloaded Internet Explorer 8, but that isn't the problem because I uninstalled it and it is still happening.
I even tried to uninstall itunes and quicktime, but nothing happens.
This is very frustrating because I can't get in contact with Apple because they say my warranty has expired, and I will have to pay $29.00 for a one time call.
Based on these discussions, I am not the only one having the same type of problem. Apple seems to know about it, but is doing nothing.

I meant importing cds to my ipod. I found out the hard way that some can't be imported. My computer crashed because of it. I just bought a new one.
I contacted my virus prtection provider, and was told that the problem maybe that it wasn't compatible with other programs I was running on my computer.
The only program I can think of is internet explorer 8. I had just downloaded it when it started to occur.
I contacted microsoft before the crash, and they said to contact apple which I couldn't because my warranty had expired.
Anyway, I am done with putting music on ipods. I am just going to use itunes to sync and recharge my ipod. When it stops working I'll just get rid of it.
