IPod freezes while i'm running

everytime i go running, my ipod ends up freezing about 15 minutes into it. This has happened the last 5 times i ran. is it freezing because of the constant bouncing?
some gateway from 2006   Windows XP Pro

If it is doing it while you are running, and not at other times, you are either getting sweat in it (get a sweat resistant case) or it is bouncing around the hard drive too much. Again, get a case that doesn't let it bounce, hold it in your hand, or use a flash-based iPod (Nano or Shuffle) that doesn't have a hard drive. You can get a refurbished Shuffle on the iTunes online Store for $49.

  • Ipod freezes while attempting to Synce

I just got a 80GB ipod classic. It was working fine untill last night when it froze while i was syncing it. whenver i plug it into my computer (macbook pro (10.4.10), the ipod recognizes that its been plugged in and the "do not disconnect" icon appears. this is the point where the ipod freezes. the computer never responds and the ipod icon does not appear in itues or as an external drive. I then disconnect the ipod and reset it which makes is work normal again (untill i try to sync).
I had been experimenting with putting text files on the ipod and i think that might be what caused the problem. Is there a way to restore teh ipod without doing it through itunes? it seems like this would solve the
    problem.
The ipod software is version 1.2.1
    thanks in advance

this sounds like a variation of the same problem from this "locked" thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5324590
since I could not reply there I wrote a message to the support team and am copying it here to encourage others to do the same, and as a guide for the type of language and attitude that is needed to get a response to this issue. (ie calling and yelling/cursing/threatening gets you nowhere) feel free to use any portions of it you wish in your own message, as this is an issue that apple needs to address on a large scale instead of one at a time returns for units that don't perform any better.
    "Dear Apple,
My 80 Gigabyte iPod Classic is freezing during navigation in ITunes, and seems to be following the pattern of other complaints from this forum on the Apple Support Discussions page http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5324590
I just purchased the iPod new from TigerDirect.com within the last two weeks, and am very disappointed with it's glitchy behavior in iTunes. I also have a 30GB iPod Video that I'm using with ITunes with absolutely no problems whatsoever. It seems that this is a widespread problem that would be best addressed with a firmware update or a recall, as telephone tech support and apple "genius bar" employees either don't know of the problem and have no resolution. Those that are aware consider it a small and isolated occurance (either innocently or by instruction from superiors). This is a serious issue when considering the relatively large value of a new iPod, the large share Apple currently has in the portable media device market, and what I'm sure is Apple's interest in continuing to lead this market with innovation and quality. The number one complaint people have with Microsoft is instability and crashing. Please don't ignore this problem and let Apple's reputation and quality drop to their level. Apple has a responsibility to fix this issue for all affected, and to do so quickly and courteously. Please forward this message to any and all superiors that may be able to resolve this issue when dead ends are met.
    Thank You"

My 30GB ipod video will freeze while sycing large files such as movies or audiobooks. When this happens, you can here the hard drive in the Ipod making alot of noise. I think the drive is near death. Has anyone had a similar issue?
I'm using an Intel Imac (OSX) with a mac formated Ipod. I have rebooted the Ipod and have even done a factory reset in the past. It will fix it for a little while, but the symptoms return.

I wish i could but im having the same problem. please someone help us!!

  • IPOD freezes while SYNCING - and then gets file error

    Hello all,
i have a standard 40gb click wheel ipod, quite old, it works, but limited. The ipod just freezes while syncing now, it has been restored numerous times, but 2 not much avail, i can get one or two albums on there, then everytime i try and sync the ipod just freezes, and has to be reset. Every TIme i plug the ipod into my vista laptop it says, the says. SCAN AND FIX, ( because i couldnt get anything else to work i tried this ) and this is what vista told me
    http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9118/vistafixesipodlu5.png
i was like woah, so i proceded to restore the ipod then it seemed to work, for a day. then went back to the freezing while syncing, then next time i plugged in the ipod, windows said the disk needs to be formated before it could be used, so i tried that ( cos itunes was doing sweet **** ALL ) and windows couldnt format it, and neither cos HP USB FORMAT Tool. so i reset the ipod, plug it back into vista, and behold, SCAN AND FIX COMES UP, so i click it, it fixes it, but only loads 1 album before it freezes while syncing again, i have the screenshots,it took 11 screenshots, to get the FULL MESSAGE, that vista chkdsk gave me, there was thousands of these "BAD LINKS IN LOST CHAIN at CLUSTER XXXXX Corrected" messages
im currently listening to Three Days Grace on the ipod, works GREAT, except if i try and put more then this ONE album on it, it freezes while syncing, and gives me the unknown file error. SO any ideas if this ipod can be fixed, cos itunes cant do anything, im assuming there is physical unrepairable damage to the HDD of the ipod and will need replacing if this ipod wants to be in full working order again.
The ipod is NOT under warranty either, so does any1 know where in Australia, it be fitted with a new HDD? Thanks
    kind Regards,

  • My ipod freezes while backing up and wont let me sync anything :S

can  someone please help me..i restored the old setting on my ipod to see if it will work but now i just have an empty ipod touch..it wont let me sync my ipod because it keeps freezing while backingup..

Try moving the existing backup file to a safe location so iTunes has to make an entire new file.  It is located here:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

  • IPod freezes while playing

Hello, I'm having some troubles with my iPod.
I've had it for a few months now, and whenever I play certain songs, my iPod stops playing part of the way through the song and lags severely when I try to push any buttons. When this happens, I can hear and feel things happening inside of it, as if it's working or loading something. If I just let it do what it feels it needs to do, then it starts playing again eventually, usually after about a minute. It's not the files because all of my songs work fine in iTunes. Another thing I should probably note is that right after it starts working again, the battery indicator drops to near empty, then goes back up to a probably more accurate level after a few minutes.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi, I found this solution on another message board. I am trying it today. Please let me know how it works for you.
Guess what ... i finally found the solution!
The Mac technician said i'll need to replace the board which is more than half the price of my IPOD. So i decided to give it my best.
all this while i was treatin it like an IPOD & was thinkin that the harddisk could have a problem i.e. bad sector something. But then I treated it like a hard disk. So I’m guessing that this should work with all IPODs that come with harddisk.
I’m using windows XP, so I don’t know how it’s gonna work for Mac users.
But I guess they kinda have similar applications like scan disk/error checking.
So this is what you do… I’m gonna tell ya all I did.
    Backup your music.
Remove all IPOD Application (i.e. I Tunes, Ipod updater … etc)
    Restart your computer
Plug you ipod and format it (Goto “My Computer” right click on your IPOD and click on format. Do not select “Quick Format”. The normal format took about 20 mins on my 30GB. File system should be Fat32)
Once you’ve formatted your IPOD unplug it from the computer & turn it off (hold “play” button for a few seconds and it should go off)
    Installation
Get the CD that came along with your IPOD use that to install I Tune.
As you insert the Disk, the autorun starts the installation wizard while that’s progressing plug in your ipod. And your computer will re-install it.
After the installation is complete your IPOD wil have the the factory settings & the firmware. Even after you format your IPOD it still has the factory firmware.
Note. The old I Tunes (green icon) might not work because you had a newer version on your computer before.
This is where I disconnected my ipod and scrolled around played games, tried in and out of menu’s and it was working perfectly. That’s when I installed the new iTunes.
But I did not update the firmware because that’s what caused my IPOD to start freezing.
Hope this works for ya guys. I know how it feels without music. I’m so addicted to it!
If you have any questions feel free to email me [email protected]

  • IPod freezes while playing video

I just got a new 60GB iPod video, put an invisible shield on it, and synced it with my computer. I've had an iTunes account for a while, so I downloaded some of the tv shows they have in the store. I also downloaded dvd decoder and videora to convert some of my dvd's.
The Problem: when I play movies on my iPod that I ripped from dvd's (whether the movie is 1 minute long or 2 hours), they freeze 31 seconds in every time. Then they start playing again after about 5 seconds but with no sound. If I let it continue to play, it will not freeze. Then if press menu and click on the movie again, it will start playing with sound from where it left off, but freeze again after 30 seconds. But all the tv shows that I downloaded from iTunes play through without a problem. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution? Thanks a lot.

  • Ipod freezes while trying to restore

I have been trying to fix my ipod 20 gb. It all started when it started skipping songs, it would start the song then go to another, go to that song then stop and go back to the main menu. I then proceded to connect it to Itunes. It froze every time I tried. Then thats when I got the apple logo and after the folder with excalmation point came up. I tried the 5 R's. The only that I have not been able to the restore. The restore will not let me at all do it. The ipod will be connected and I hear it making the clicking noise, but it just sits there, and the battery is full so I dont know what its doing. Then Restore finally becomes an option and it says CANT MOUNT IPOD. I dont know what to do, and I am extremly frustrated. This is the first major probelm I have ever had with ipod. Any help???Thanks in the future to anyone who can give an answer.!!Is there any number I can call to talk to anyone about this?
    Ipod 20 gb.   Windows XP

    Hello all,
First. make sure your XP(OS) installed on drive C. Open My computer folder and hope you can see your iPod there, right click, try to change the drive to M. If it still does not solve, read the following, sorry which is very long one
    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • IPod "freezes" while uploading music

Recently I accidentally pulled out my iPod without ejecting it and all of the files were corrupted. I tried resetting it to factory settings, and after about twelve tries it finally worked. (Every time I tried it would freeze iTunes). But then even after I restored it my iPod wouldn't be recognized by iTunes. So I went into Disk Utility and tried to restore it through that, but every time I tried it would say "Timed Out" or "Umounting Failed".
The next day (today) my iPod randomly showed up on iTunes. I restored it successfully and was able to put a couple of albums back on it. But sometimes the synchronizing just stalls, and stops...it says it's synchronizing but it just sits at the same song that it was trying to upload. I've restarted iTunes and my computer and the same thing still happens.
Any ideas what's going on or how to stop it?

I tried the update with no success. Here's another update after actually trying to use my iPod:
When I have it just plugged into headphones or speakers half of the songs cut off in the middle, just a little bit off near the end. Some don't work at all. Plus my iPod is very slow while moving through the menus.
When I have it plugged into the Monster FM transmitter, I really can't get anything to work. It freezes on almost every song. The most I can get a song to play is about 16 seconds before it skips over to the next.
This seems just seems really messed up but it seems to be a software problem. Any ideas?

  • IPod Freezes While Syncing

I'll be syncing it and it just freezes and shows this:
This iPod cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found.
While that shows on my computer, my ipod is frozen on the Do not disconnect screen.
    What do I do?

i'm having the same problem. I have to hard reset it EVERY TIME! then when i go to re sync it, the songs that did get on the ipod have to resync again and then it will freeze again.
I have restore it so many times, re-installed itunes, nothing works. please help.

  • IPod freezes while downloading music from iTunes

This morning I went to the Genius bar at the local Apple store. I had been having problems with my iPod and also my iBook computer. We restored the system to 10.3.9 on the iBook and completely wiped out the iPod. I took it home to upload all the music again and it got about one third of the way and then froze. Reset the ipod, started the upload, then it went to about the 128th song and froze. The third time it froze on the first song. Hooked the iPod up to a different computer and it got to the 3rd to last song and froze. I am running iTunes 4.6 and have the 2005-6-26 updater installed. (not sure if the 2005-9-28 updater is okay to use as I have been reading these posts, and it sure doesn't sound good.) Any suggestions?

    Welcome to AD!
I know you weren't downloading videos and probably didn't get an error 8008, but try these steps for getting rid of that download folder & checking for available purchases after it's gone.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2384
Do you have V CAST from Verizon installed on that PC?

  • IPOD FREEZING WHILE PLAYING TUNE

Got 20GB [U2 spcl edition] this time last year. Few months ago began freezing 8-15 seconds into a tune. Recently went through My Music and deleted every song/album that seemed to freeze iPod. Repeatedly RESET iPod by toggling Hold button. Recently saved all My Music files, deleted iTunes, downloaded and reinstalled iTunes and then RESTORED iPod. Not freezing as much but still freezing. Any thoughts of how to solve? Does this sound like hardware rather than software problem?

Nevermind I figured out that the hard drive was failing and corrupting the video files.

  • Ipod freeze while using the stopwatch

Does anybody has recognized the same behavior with the Nano.
    I have started the stopwatch.
stop for the first time with the select button.
then press the play/pause button for at least 2 sec.
    then my nano freezed.
It came back only by resetting with the procedure mentioned in the handbook (switch to hold and then back and then press menu and select ....)
I would like to know if it is a general problem or only my model has the problem.

I was not able to reproduce the freeze. Pressing and holding play/pause turned the Nano off. I pressed the center button and it turned back on again. I was able to resume the stopwatch and return to the Now Playing screen.
It may not be the stopwatch itself causing the problem. Based on what I've read in other people's posts, I'd recommend removing any photos and contacts because those two features seem to be the most badly broken. Then try to reproduce the freeze with the stopwatch again. Might not help but it's worth a try. The cleanest test would be to do a restore of the iPod (which erases everything on the iPod, including the music) and then try to reproduce the stopwatch freeze. If it freezes with nothing on it, I'd say you've got a defective iPod. If it doesn't freeze when it is empty but does freeze after you reload your music then you probably just need to wait until the next firmware update.

  • Ipod touch, Freezing while syncing.

everytime i connect my ipod it syncs my music and pictures fine, but when it starts to sync my apps it syncs about 3 apps. Then my ipod freezes while syncing, forcing me to restore my ipod from recovery mode. When i say it freezes, i mean that my ipod has the "Sync In Progress" screen, with the battery in the center, and on the bottom of the screen the "Slide To Cancel Sync" on the slider. normaly the slider is always flashing highlighting a few letters at a time, across the screen, saying "Slide To Cancel" When it freezes the slider stops flashing/scrolling and then a little spinning wheel starts to spin in the center of my ipod, on the battery logo. After about, 30 seconds the wheel stops spinning, my itunes freezes up, and my iPod touch freezes up. as soon as i disconect my frozen ipod, my itunes works again. then my ipod is stuck on the frozen "sync in progress" screen. i then have to do the long recovery/restore. Then i decided change my settings from automatic syncing to selecting what i sync. I synced my music, fine. I synced my Pictures, fine. i then decided to sync one app at a time. I first synced solitaire, fine. Then i synced sextuple, fine. Then i synced Super Monkey Ball, my ipod froze!!! So I thought that mabye thats what was freezing up my ipod. then i had to restore my ipod, again. and start the whole process over again. I synced sextuple, fine. Then i Synced super monkey ball, again, and it synced fine. then i synced solitaire, worked fine. then i synced Cube Runner, My ipod froze again. on a totaly different app. i had to restore from recovery mode again, and i synced my music, pictures, super monkey ball, solitaire, and sextuple. then i decided, i will just keep my ipod away from a computer so it won't happen again. so i have 23 apps, and i only have three on my ipod. i really want to keep trying to fix this, but i don't want to have to do a restore, and then have to resync all of my music/pictures again. I really want to know whats up with my ipod. PLEASE, IF ANYONE CAN HELP, PLEASE DO SO. I WILL BE TOTALY GREATFUL. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I have been having the same problem too. i was sick and tired of it so the i brought it to an apple store and basically just told me stuff i already know, then 2 days later it started happening again. So i went to the apple store yet again, different guy same nonsense, "let me check your battery" "let me see if you memory has problems" "don't have too many applications running at the same time" on and on.. all that happened is that they restored it and said it should work... well clearly i go home to sync it, everything freezes, i go back they give me a new one... yet here i am 3 days later still having the problems even with a new ipod. i reinstalled itunes like 6 times, restored my ipod 4 times... so basically everyone is having the same problem... i guess we just gotta wait til apple realizes that they have a big problem to fix and does something for us
