Ipod freezing.. under extreme conditions

hello. i'm a fellow guitar player and i've been using my ipod to learn songs these past two days. i rewind and play certain segments up to 15-20 times continuously, so i'm sure this slows the hard drive down and uses up my battery. i'm guessing the ipod isn't meant for this kind of play? perhaps this is why its freezing? it happened yesterday and today. any feedback would be appreciated. it never freezes under any other conditions.

Actually, I think that the iPod copies the entire track into flash memory before playing it, as playing it from the hard disk would cause it to overheat and die.
But yeah, it could stress the parts of your iPod. For stuff like this, if you have the money, I'd go out and put down $79 (US dollars, that is) for an iPod Shuffle, or if you want a screen, an iPod nano (24 hours battery!!!).
Though I do think the iPod shouldn't have problems like this. If you notice it starts getting warm, though, then shut it off and let it rest a bit.

  • Can I get my ipod replaced under these conditions??

I have the first generation mini ipod which was given to me as a replacement for my old one, which i got exchanged a couple weeks before the 1yr warranty would have expired. So this replacement I have (got it in December) is starting to do weird things. The menu button doesn't work, i cant turn it off by holding the play button, and toggling the hold button makes the ipod do the functions the menu should do, like going back and lighting up the screen. Is it possible to get a replacement replaced? or does anyone know how to solve this problem?

If you got your replacement iPod in December, it's no longer within the warranty.
With any replacement iPod, you get either a 90 day warranty or the remainder of the original 12 month warranty whichever is the longest.
    Have you been through these?

  • RAW import looks odd under certain conditions

    Hi All,
Every so often, when I import images from either my Canon EOS D30 or my Canon Powershot G3, I find that the colours in the decoded RAW image look very odd (these were generally pictures taken under extreme lighting conditions). I've attempted to fiddle with the colour temperature and tint to try and compensate but it still looks very wrong.
However, if I convert these images using the utilities that were provided by Canon for Windoze then the colours seem to come up right - unfortunately I can't seem to find the same set of utilities for the Mac
Does anyone have an idea of whether this is an issue with the RAW decode on the Mac or whether there is some additional setting that I need to fiddle to get it right?
I have posted the original image produced by the Mac RAW decoder and the Canon decoder (under windoze) over here if anyone is interested in seeing the difference:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/62993825@N00/
BTW, I have the latest RAW decoder updates, latest aperture updates and Mac OS X updates.
    Cheers,
    Emil.

    Emil,
I was able to bring both JPEGs into Aperture and get the color nearly identical by doing as you describe above -- moving the Tint slider to -150 -- but then selecting the magenta square in the Color adjustment panel and sliding the Hue slider towards red (to about 30) and sliding the Range slider all the way to the right (to 2.00).
BTW, in addition to clicking the left arrow to go beyond their slider ranges in the number input boxes, you can also click on the number input box and when the cursor turns to an I-bar with triangles on either side, you can just click and drag the number to a value higher than the slider will allow.

  • My ipod freeze the player menu

It doesnt let me skip songs or paused them, with a little bit shaking it change song, but i can even change playlist or someting

so does updating it improve its battery life or
restoring it because im getting rubish battery time
    from my nano!
I assume you know that the backlight kills your battery and that the quoted battery life is for operation under perfect conditions. I just posted this in another thread and I'm reposting it here for you....
Specially about the battery, it lasts very little of
I expected. (About 4-6 hours, ligh off, equalizer
    rock, moderate volume).
Is it actually running out, or are you going by the meter? The vast majority of people who have this problem aren't actually running out of power. They only think they are. The meter is very inaccurate. After my iPod reaches zero, my iPod continues to work for five hours or more.
If you want the meter to be more accurate, let the iPod run down completely, but don't do this too often. Just once in a blue moon. This will calibrate the meter but has nothing to do with the battery itself.
The "life-use" of Li-ion batteries is to little too
    (about 500 cycle-charges)
If you don't like Li-ion, the bad new for you is that Li-ion batteries are now used in all products by all manufacturers. ALL rechargeable batteries, no matter what type they are have a limited number of charge cycles - your phone, your laptop, everything. The only difference with Apple is that they're telling you this up front.
Do you know or somebodys knows some way to extend
    battery charge?
No, but if you follow the advice above, hopefully this won't be an issue.

  • I tunes 11 freezes under windows 7 64-bit immediately and won´t do anything. Please help

itunes 11 freezes under windows 7 64-bit immediately and won`t do anything. Please help !

The first thing to do is make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes. Look on the Help/Check for updates menu option in iTunes, which will confirm that you have the latest version or enable you to download it.
The effective way to Sync the iPod is to add your songs to iTunes and then connect the iPod to iTunes after you have added your songs.
So if you have been connecting the iPod and then trying to add songs "to the iPod" - don't!
You add the music to iTunes and then sync the iPod with iTunes afterwards.
Next, try connecting the iPod to iTunes, if you get the "duplicate file message", can you post it here (exact wording please)?
Once you have the iPod connected to iTunes, click on the Device that appears on the left of the iTunes window. On the Device/Summary screen, choose (check) Sync only checked songs and videos. Providing the songs still have the check mark on in iTunes (the default when songs are added to iTunes), those songs will Sync with the iPod.
Notice the other options in additiion to Summary. Look on the Podcasts pane for the Sync option (to add Podcasts to your iPod) and also on the Photos pane for options for adding (or not) Photos to your iPod. If you change any of these options, you will need to press the Sync button afterwards for the changes to take effect.
Lastly (for now), you can only Sync the iPod with one iTunes library. If you try and Sync it with a second library on your computer, or with iTunes on another computer, all your previous songs etc will be removed and replaced with the new library.
A thought... could the duplicate file message be because you have two iTunes libraries on your machine?

  • Ipod freezes during sync then error that it cant read file...

A little pre-info... I have owned a black 30gb 5th gen (video) Ipod for a couple of years now. I plug it in fine, my computer recognizes it fine, Itunes works fine with it... everything works great.
I just bought another Ipod off ebay that is exact as mine except white- auction states the Ipod works fine, seller has awesome feedback, etc.. I bought this for a gift for my sister for Christmas. It is second hand, so warranty is expired.
I plug it in the computer, and first tried to transfer some normal text data via explorer. I had put this same data on my own black Ipod with no issues, words fine. The white? Lo and behold I get that "Data Cycle Redundancy" error during copy. My experience is that that has always meant that the original file is messed up, not the destination its being copied too... but in this case I know the original file(s) were/are ok.
And the Ipod freezes. So I safely unplug, and try to hard reset it. It wouldnt for a bit, and I noticed the Ipod was rather warm (but this might be because it was frozen for several minutes with the backlight still on as well). Finally I get it to reset. Same stuff happens again, again its hard to reset.
So then I decide screw it, forget adding the stuff via explorer, Ill just try to get the music on my computer at least, over via Itunes, after I first restore the Ipod.
Itunes opens... recognizes the Ipod... I go to copy music, and it copies until it essentially 'freezes'. I tried many times - its not a bad file because the same file would copy the other times Id try. It would freeze on any random file, during the write process.
Then Itunes comes up with this error:
"the ipod cannot be synced. the required file cannot be found"
I dont think this is referring to my files trying to be copied, they werent deleted or moved from their location since importing into the Itunes library. Im wondering if theres a system type file on the Ipod that Itunes speaks to as it transfers...and when the Ipod freezes... hence it cant be found...
At the same time I get this error from Itunes, I get a Windows XP bubble pop up that says:
"Delayed Write Failed - Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Now again, my computer/windows is NOT the issue. Its the Ipod.
All the advice I have searched says to fix things on my computer. That includes that Apple support page in regards to those errors - it points the finger at my USB ports, etc - and thats simply not the case. If it was, my other Ipod wouldnt be working either - nor would my flash drives.
    Its the white Ipod.
I saw one site suggest to format the Ipod via Windows first, then do the Itunes restore, but the Ipod froze and Windows couldnt format.
I went into Device Manager and compared the two Ipod settings, both share the same settings. They are not set on 'enable write cache'.
I have tested the HD via Diagnostics, and the BL blinked after the test, showing the HD passed... so right now I can only think of three things... a bad logic board perhaps, or the Ipod system files are corrupt somehow no matter how many times I do the restore... should I revert to an older update; is that even possible. Or the HD is bad after all and its just being missed in the test.
So now... I need help. Am I missing something important? Is it a simple fix... a corrupt file thats freezing the Ipod somewhere - or did I get a bad Ipod from the seller.
Its so close to Christmas, if there was some simple fix(instead of it being a bad HD) I could fix it myself, Id rather do that than go through the hassle of returns/refunds. Not to mention, its always a gamble how the seller will react. Will they help, or say its not a problem on their end and try to screw me... then Ill have to go through Paypal for reimbursement and that takes 90 days at least...

I wish I had good news but all I have is information. I have access to 4 5th gen ipods. 2 black 30s and 1 white 30 and 1 black 80. The one white and one of the blacks work and have worked flawlessly for the past two years. The other black 30 and 80 started having the issue mentioned here some time after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried to lowlevel format the iPod drive to fix any issues and that didn't cure the problem. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago and restored my ipod to Mac format and low and behold it would accept files again! However it wouldn't let me fill the ipod beyond about halfway, this was on both ipods. Now the ipods have become slowly less and less fillable. Seems like syncing rather than putting the songs on manually seems to help, but again its getting worse all the time. (the two ipods that don't have any problems belong to my girls and the problem ones belong to my son and i) <- Grasping at straws I know, but my son and I are constantly changing the songs, playlists, videos and such.
When I bought my Mac the guys at the Apple store were shocked that I was having this problem and practically begged me to bring it in so they could see what it wrong with it. I will post an update when i do that.

We have itunes music on a computer, an ipod nano, and a new ipod touch under two different accounts. How can we combine the music from both accounts to one device?

There is no "adding" a device.  Simply plug the iDevice into the computer.  iTunes should automatically detect the device when it is connected.
iTunes can sync/manage as many iDevices as you want... there is no 1 device limit.

  • Multiple ipods on under same account

Is it possible to use multiple ipod systems under the same account? I have a nano that is currently synced with my itunes and I recently found my old mini that still works. I have thought I could download my kids' songs on the mini that way if something happens to it, I won't be upset.
    SG

I currently sync my old iPod for Video 5G, my 1st Gen iPod Touch, my 3rd Gen iPod Touch, my iPhone 3G, and my new iPhone 4 all to the same library using the same account.
I seem to recall that before it used to allow me to sync multiple devices at the same time, as long as I had open USB ports to plug them into. I have recently seen that now, if I have an iPod Touch or iPhone connected & syncing, the computer doesn't seem to see a second one if it is connected, but as soon as the first device is ejected, the second one is picked-up and synced just fine.

  • Ipod freezes when playing video through dock

Okay, this is a challenging one. I will be surprised if someone can help me figure this one out, but I will be very grateful!!
Picked up a brand new 60gb 5th generation video ipod the other day. 1.1 update already installed. Everything worked great. Was able to play videos through the AV dock, no problem, and was able to hook it up to the JBL stereo for the ipod, no problem.
Here is where it gets interesting. I took an avi video from my digital camera, and used Quicktime Pro to convert it into a .mov Apple Quicktime movie. I am using Windows XP. I then imported that .mov movie into itunes. Then I right clicked on the file and told itunes to convert it into the ipod format. I then hooked the ipod up to the computer, and the video was transferred to the ipod with no problems.
Then I was able to play the video with no problem on the ipod screen (not hooked up to the AV dock). Then I inserted the ipod into the AV dock that is hooked up to my tv. I played videos this way without a problem, before I loaded this new home made video. When I played the new video, I answered Yes to Tv Out, and right after that point my ipod froze up. No video played at all. Then I had to reset my ipod.
I tried this again several times, with the same result. This was now happening with regular videos that I downloaded from itunes. Also now, when I hooked the ipod up to the JBL stereo, and just tried to play a song, the ipod would freeze up. However, songs and videos play fine when the ipod is not hooked up to a dock.
It seems to me like my home made video somehow corrupted the software drivers for the port on the ipod.
Then to fix the problem, I finally had to do the dreaded RESTORE. I could not update the ipod, because I was already at version 1.1. I tried rolling back to an earlier version, but the updater told me that the update was not compatible with my ipod.
The RESTORE did fix the problem. The ipod was completely back to normal. I could hook it up to the JBL and the AV dock with no problems. Until...yes, I tried playing the home made video again. I just wanted to see if it was a fluke. Same problem came back....arrghhh!
He is another weird observation. I can start the video playing on the ipod, without it hooked up to the dock, and answer Yes to tv out. The video starts playing, then I can insert the ipod into the dock, while it is still playing, and the video plays fine on the tv, through the dock! Until the video finishes. Once the video finishes, the ipod freezes up again.
I wonder if this is a hardware problem, and I should just return my ipod. It seems like a software problem to me. I think if it is my home made video that is corrupting my ipod, I think itunes should be smart enough to not copy something to my ipod that is going to corrupt it.
Ha..ha...wow, sorry that was very long-winded. Anyone have any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 2.8ghz P4   Windows XP   2.25GB of RAM

All I can suggest is to re-encode the video as m4v with QT Pro, there might've been a problem in encoding. Also, try sending this same video (setting TV Out to Yes) with the iPod not plugged into the dock and with an Apple RCA cable, if you have one, hooked up to a TV. If that works, the dock connector might be damaged (unlikely) but it's possible. So once you've re-encoded, see if the dock situation works then. Good luck.

  • 5th Gen iPod freezes on "Do Not Disconnect" screen when connected to Mac

My iPod freezes on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen (partially backlit) when I plug it into my computer. I have a G4 eMac with standard USB connections. The ipod firmware is up to date.
This freeze doesn't occur ALL the time....just occasionally. The iPod does not appear on my desktop or in iTunes when this happens. I have to wait until the iPod discharges its battery completely before I can use it again (this sometimes takes a couple of days!).
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks....

    G4 eMac 700mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   768 MB RAM

Thanks for the replies.........I can't seem to find a solution to this....its annoying to say the least. Its just happened again this morning, though it's successfully sync'd on the last few occasions....it seems to be quite random.
One thing I've noticed is that it synced OK when iTunes wasn't open when I plugged it in. It appeared on the desktop, then I opened iTunes. This morning though it froze when iTunes was already open, so there may be an issue with iTunes (I updated this weekend to see if it was any different with the new version). I guess this will happen if you've got the ipod set to open iTunes automatically when connected too.
So, no solutions as yet.......I'm gonna get onto Apple to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all on this one.
PS: why no firewire capabilities on the new ipods?

  • IPod freezes after connecting to PC/iTunes

I think it's a common problem that iPods freeze after plugging in the USB cable. I don't know if it's working for others, but if i do a reset (hold menu plus select) on the iPod while it is plugged and iTunes is running it works. But i have to do this every time i plug it in... So much to years of software development...

I assume you meant to say "now" at the bottom of the list?
Unfortunately, like it or not this how the latest version of iTunes sorts songs. Numbers now appear at the end of the listings.
