Ipod freezing when connecting to pc

i just purchased a 30 gig ipod this summer, but when i plug it into my pc, the ipod lights up and freezes on the first menu...the ipod stays on this screen until the batteries drain. This has happened all but one time when plugging it in.
i can't even turn it off when its frozen.
any help??

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
-- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
-- Safely eject the iPod
-- Reboot the PC

  • IPod Freezing when connected to computer

My problem seems to be similar to all of the other problems people are having with iTunes 7, but I couldn't find something the same as mine, so here's my problem. Whenever I connect my iPod to by Powerbook G4 (this is only after i installed iTunes 7, my ipod shows the 'Do Not Disconnect,' but freezes - the circle with the cross does not flash. I proceed to reset the iPod, after which I can connect to my computer with no problems (iTunes 7 is really annoying, but i assume an update soon?????).
Is my problem an issue with iTunes 7 and will be solved with the supposed update, or does anyone know what might be causing it.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Everyone.
I've been having the same problem. i have a 5G ipod.. i did the latest firmware update a while back, and the iTunes 7 update. After that, whenever i connect the ipod to a mac, i see the red circle with a line through, and its not flashing, then the ipod is locked up. only way to make it work is reset the ipod while its connected..
I tried a full restore, and that did not help.. then I pretty much gave up, and hoped that Apple would release new firmware.
In a last attempt of hope, i thought i would connect the ipod to my new makbook pro.. just to see if it was a problem with the imac. well, same again. ugh. rats..!
So, i tried a full restore from this 'new' computer..
This time, i noticed something different.. iTunes decided to download the firmware again, and re-flash the iPod.. (with the same version)
ah.. now it works !!! i went back to the imac.. connected it.. loaded up all my tunes.. and it works.. disconnect.. plug back in.. no freeze !!!!
So, it seems that if you can try another mac, and restore.. or indeed get the firmware to download again, and apply to the iPod.. it just might work !!!
Hope this helps some folks out!
    Cheers, Keith

  • Ipod freezes when connected to computer and cannot restore

When I connect my ipod to my computer itunes does not recognise it for a long time, when it does it says the ipod may be corrupted and to do a restore. So I click restore, and the warning message comes up about erasing the songs. I click yes then an error message comes up saying that the resource is not available. When I click eject, the ipod dissapears from the source list but the do no disconnect thing stays on the ipod screen and dosent even flash.
My ipod has not been recognized by itunes since the latest update, so I uninstalled the ipod driver and this problem has been happening since

If you look through the forum there appear to thousand of people who have this problem. Here's what we know so far:-
    1. The problem is related to iTunes v7 and the firmware v1.2 on later ipods.
    2. it is a bug in the firmware that gives any/all of the following symptoms
    - freezes after re-set
    - freezes during restore
    - cannot sync
    - cannot eject
    - cannot switch off
    - basically CANNOT USE IPOD AT ALL
    3. the problem appears to have been known to apple for at least a couple of weeks but they have not found a solution and for the time being they have also chosen to not even acknowledge the problem to re-assure users that their hardware is OK and a software fix is on the way.
    4. Contentious posts are being deleted by Apple (I have already had 2 removed so get this one while it's hot)
    keep the pressure up!!!
They will have to acknowledge it and fix it

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod and ipod freezes when connected via USB

My ipod has developed a problem.
    1. When hooked up to a computer it suddenly is not recognized by the computer--there is no "sync" noise and it odesn't appear in itunes. Also, all the buttons cease to function.
    2. Interestingly, it still works fine in my Boise player and also when in the car via audio cable.
    3. When i unplug it from the computer it works fine again.
    4. I tried a manual reset into disk mode hoping that i could "start over." Bad idea--still no connection AND now everything is off it.
Any ideas to help with this?
    Thanks a ton.

I have tried with two different cords and in different USB ports. I think it is an ipod problem, not a computer problem.

  • 20G iPOD freezes when connecting to home stereo and other components

When i connect my iPOD to my home stereo through a docking station the iPOD buttons become disfunctional. it only plays one song and then it "shuts down". Not really shuts down because the iPOD is still on and as soon as i remove it from the docking station, it works fine again. Any ideas?

"However, most of the cables I find use the headphone output. "
Yep, thats fine, just get one of those!
MiniJack (3.5mm; small headphone output) - L/R Cinch Audio Jack, as you say.

  • IPod freezing when connecting to computer

Hi, I've been running with iTunes since 4.7 but after the 6.0 upgrade everything's been unuseable for me. The biggest issue is that my iPod can no longer sync, or do anything -- anytime I plug it into the USB port on my computer, everything freezes. The ipod sits there with the Do Not Disconnect message, and the computer sits there frozen, no longer taking any mouse or keyboard input.
I tried remove itunes and quicktime, reinstalling, and reimporting my library but that didn't change anything. It doesn't appear to be itunes related, I just grabbed the most recent ipod updated and installed it, but the same freeze happens when plugging in the ipod, even without itunes running. So I currently can't update the ipod at all, let alone sync it. Any suggestions?

hmmm. are those USB mice and keyboards?
Yes, thanks much for the quick reply, I've tried on a different USB bus and the mouse and keyboard no longer freeze (although this is not a good long term solution since I can't really use this port easily), but things still don't seem to be working. When plugged in, the ipod sat there for maybe 10 mins saying Do not disconnect. Then the iPod updater window appeared, but it was frozen. Then after about 30 minutes or so the updater window appears to be useable, but the Update button is grayed out and the Name, Serial Number, Software Version and Capacity all say N/A. The obvious thing to do is Restore, but I'm a little nervous, at least right now I can use my ipod with the music I had loaded before all this happened, if I restore and still can't sync then it's just hosed.

  • IPOD freeze when connect to Mac

have a 80 gig 5th gen IPOD and every time I connect it to my Mac (OS X) it freezes.
The computer seems to recognize something it's being attached but it doesn't show up in Itunes and the "Do Not Disconnect" pops up on the IPOD. However, it will flash once and then freeze up. I have to restart the IPOD while it's connected to the computer to get it working and connected.
This is a MAJOR pain. Does anyone know a solution to this?
Software on both sides is up to date.

I have the same problem with mine - 5th generation. I can get it to reset by unhooking it from the computer "even though it says do not disconnect." Then I push and hold the wheel and menu buttons. That may take a couple of tries. I get it to reset. But can't hook up to iTunes and download new songs and books. It will charge though. Not sure what is going on. I have the latest update etc. Just started doing this in July. Wish someone would post the reason and the fix.

  • IPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to Computer

    Hi.
My iPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to my computer (Vista... yes... I know). I've got my iPod for over a year now and I've never had real trouble with it.
When I plug it in (iTunes already running) my computer gives me the 'thumbthumb' noise because an USB thingamajib is connected to the computer. At this moment my iPod freezes and stays on. iTunes doesn't seem to find my pod. When I disconnect my iPod, it'll stay on (doesn't go energy safe mode) and stays frozen until the battery is empty. But by then, I've already lost my playing info (Which I really value).
    Pllllllease help me out her.

Someone has finally found a solution to this problem and i decided that i would spread the word around ... so here are the steps:
    1) Quit iTunes.
    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.
    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.
    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".
    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.
You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.
And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.
*If you download the iTunes file from the "support.apple" link, and you can't open it, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/ and download "iTunes 8.2 for Windows: iTunesSetup.exe

  • Computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano

    Hello,
my computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano. I have a Pentium IV with windows XP Pro. Can anybody help me please.

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • ITunes and Computer freeze when connecting 160GB iPod classic

    160 GB iPod Classic
    Model: MC293LL
    Version: 2.0.4 PC
    iTunes version: 11.1.3
    computers: 1 Win8 desktop,
1 Win7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1 Notebook
since yesterday I started having trouble with my iPod. When connecting it to the Notebook it showed a message: "There's a problem with this device. Scan the drive now and fix it". After clicking on scan and trying to fix the problem the notebook froze, so I connected it to me desktop, and it worked, it said that the problem was fixed. But when trying to open the iTunes it froze and after disconnecting it I realised the music was gone. So I connected it again, the same "There's a problem with this device. Scan the drive now and fix it"-message showed, but at the end the computer said it didn't detect any problem with the drive, so I opened iTunes and restored the iPod, and it worked but after that iTunes froze, then Windows Explorer and then the whole computer. Tried to connect the iPod to the Win7 Notebook and the same thing happened, first iTunes froze and then the computer froze, they both didn't show the blue screen.
What can I do? The iPod was already restored to the factory settings.

i had the same problem. all i did was download the newest version of itunes, which i had been putting off for months because it takes so long. after i did this itunes worked fine for me
    hope this helps

  • My ipod freezes when i jog

i freaquently go jogging with my ipod video and it freezes almost everytime i do. no matter what i do my ipod freezes when i jog with it. does anyone know how to keep it from freezing while jogging?
    ipod video

Freezing like: stopping shortly and then continuing?
Or freezing like it stops and doesn't ever start again?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the iPod, jogging and other erratic movement can cause tracks to skip occasionally.
