Ipod frozen when updating

I moved 500 cds from my emac (to free up some hard drive space) to an external hard drive. I changed my itunes preference setting in "advanced" to utilize the itunes library on the external hard drive. The library has been successfully "added" to the itunes program on the emac.
When I try to update/sync my 40 gig clickwheel ipod, it freezes after updating any number of files (1489 the first try, 32 the second try, and 4409 the third.
When it freezes, nothing works, even on the emac. Including force quitting itunes. I am forced to do a hard shut down which leaves my ipod frozen with the "do not disconnect" message. Restting it ususally works, but how am I going to ever get my music onto my ipod? Thanks for any help.

Hello bandock,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried connecting the iPod Touch in *Recovery Mode* and then restoring it via iTunes? If not, see this article for more information on getting your iPod into *Recovery Mode*.

Does the iPhone icon appear in iTunes when you connect via USB to teh computer?
If so I wonder if the proximity sensor has failed and is turning the display off, or if the display has failed.

  • IPod crash when updating w/ iphoto

Ok guys - old problem, new version:
I am synching my fifth gen iPod. I successfully update eveything right up until it gets to my photo (I have iphoto 6.0.5). Then itunes (7.1) says it couldn't update due to error-36. When I check the ipod all the music and movies etc are updated - but not my latest photos or smart albums.
What gives and how do I fix it?

    Attention All,
As you may see from my different posts, I had the same problem with my iPod nano 2 Gb when I ( directed by apple instructions) decided to update to 1,1, had several problems with the synchronisation of files (songs) to the iPod. From Monday untill yesterday had several restores and nothing happened. Then decided to restore and retrieve my older update 1,0, and then the iPod simply worked fine!! Apple should see immediattly this issue as from what I've read a great number of Nanos are facing difficulties when updating to 1,1 !!! Please Webmaster or anyone from Apple take an attitude!

  • 3G IPod Freezes When Updating

I've had a 20GB 3rd generation iPod for 3 years and I was very happy with it until the battery died. The iPod sat in a drawer for over a year until I had Apple replace the battery. When I got the iPod back I discovered a new problem. Whenever I dock the iPod my computer will either freeze the computer (mouse, keyboard and display all become non-responsive), System halt with a hardware malfunction, or automatic reboot.
I'm trying to copy tracks to the iPod but cannot copy more that 100 at a time before I'm forced to restart the computer. I've done a little research on this problem and it appears to be fairly common. I've tried every suggestion that I've come across but nothing has resolved the problem. Here's a list of actions I've taken:
    1) The 5 R's
    2) Disabled anti-virus on computer
    3) Enabled disk mode
    4) Disbaled disk mode
    5) Updated iPod firmware
    6) Updated iTunes
    7) Run chkdsk on iPod (no problems)
    8) Run iPod diagnostics (iPod is healthy)
    9) Connected with firewire (iPod mounts)
    10) Connected with USB 2.0 (iPod mounts)
    11) Disabled and deleted all podcasts
    12) Connected the iPod to iTunes on a second computer (same exact issues resulted)
    13) Replaced the battery
My computer is virus and spyware free and the iPod appears to be healthy. I'm assuming that the Apple techs that replaced the battery also performed a diagnostic on it. The iPod itself plays songs without freezing or resetting and has never given any indication of a problem.
I'll replace or repair the iPod if it turns out to be broken in some way. I do not want to buy a new iPod though if it will not resolve the problem.

I was just having this problem with my 3G. I acquired a USB & Firewire cable a while back and wasn't using it. After many failed attempts I decided to try this. I use the USB to transfer files and have the Firewire plugged into the AC adapter.
I've done 2 successful tests this way, no failures yet. Before & after software restore. Firewire-only failures still exist after the software restore.
Maybe having Firewire on AC and USB in comptuer will help you.

  • Ipod frozen when connecting to PC

Recently, every time I connected ipod to PC, ipod got frozen and I have to restart again which is helpless though, and my computer doesn't recognise ipod at all, though ipod is charging properly……God```Does it mean I have to keep listening to the same music forever.
Actually. I saw someone with the same issue, is it because of Itunes 8.0? or nothing to do with itunes? just my ipod broke?
    Helpppppp

On both computers is the newest software installed.
When the ipod is stuck again and I press the center and te menu that works, I can use the ipod and listen to music as long as I don't connect to any computer (I even tried a third computer with a clean install of Itunes and Ipod software freshly downloaded)
But when I try the center and play/pause butten it does nothing. I don't see a Disk mode appear???
Since posting first message I tried several other things.
When I first reset my Ipod and remove hardware in my pc and after that reconnect it with the Ipod updater waiting for connection, then after a while when xp sais 'new hardware successfully installed' the ipod updater lights up the restore butten. So apperently it sees a Ipod. So I pressed it but after 5 minutes or so the ipod updater says that is cannot set the ipod on locked because it is beeing used.
So I shutted every process that was active down with Sysinternals ProcessNT (except for explorer and other mandatory processes) and tried again, but it did'nt work.
Thank you for your comment looking forward about what you think of it?!?!?!

  • IPod freezing when updating music/copying files

In the past few months I bought a new Mac Mini. When transferring files from my Mac at work and my roommate's PC at home, using the disk use option on my iPod, it would start to copy the files and stop part of the way through and freeze. There's no way to stop it once it freezes and I end up having to restart my computer. I have tried resetting the iPod to factory settings and reinstalling all my music. I'm using the latest iPod software and running iTunes 6.0.1. When it updates my songs, it does the same thing where it may get about 1000 songs in and then it locks up. When I restart the machine, it has to start from the beginning. The only way around this problem I found was to stop it every couple hundred songs and restart the update. It still freezes when using disk use if the files are big enough. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does it require servicing or is there something I should be doing?
    Thanks!!!

I have been having a similar issue with my iPod since December. Whenever I plug the iPod into my computer to update the songs, it freezes after 20, 30, 40 songs or so. But I think I've discovered the source of the problem, at least in my case, so I thought I'd share it in case it helped anyone else.
I got an AirClick remote for the iPod for Christmas, which I use in the car. But for the sake of convenience, I've been leaving the receiver plugged in to the top of the iPod instead of removing it when I'm not using it. And ever since, it's been freezing when I update songs, but I never made the connection until yesterday. When I remove the AirClick receiver before docking the iPod to my computer, it updates as many songs as I would like (even thousands at a time) without freezing.
So if you have any devices plugged in to the top of your iPod, even the headphone remote, I would recommend disconnecting them before connecting the iPod to your computer.
    Hope this helps somebody!

  • Ipod failed when updating

Can somebody help me out here?
I was updating my ipod, and all of sudden it started to make a noise.
i think it was the hard drive.
and then when i tried to open the ipod, it won't start.
it only displayed with "go to ipodsupport.com" something like that.
i'm afraid the hard drive was destroyed during the updating process.
is there any way to deal with this problem?
    thanks a million

  • Download screen frozen when updating to iOS 8.1.1. ??

My download screen is frozen after attempted download of iOS 8.1.1. update; how to escape?

    Hi ..
    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, use Recovery Mode >  iOS: Unable to update or restore

  • Windows frozen when updating

I have a Satellite A305-ST551E, Windows Vista Home Premium. The last time Windows went through its automatic updates it came to the screen that says "Configuring updates: Step 3 of 3 - 100% complete" and stopped there; I let it sit for about an hour, nothing happened. Then I did a forced shut-down (yeah, in hindsight that probably wasn't too smart). When I tried booting up it stopped at the same screen except now it said "0% complete." I let it sit for +12 hours and still nothing changed. Safe mode doesn't get past that screen and I can't do a system restore. If anybody can help I appreciate it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Satellite A305-ST551E
Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
If you can reach the System Recovery Options menu, choose Startup Repair.
    Report back with details.
    I can't do a system restore.
Exactly what does that mean? Always give lots of details. We can't see your screen.

  • IPod Frozen after update

After trying to update my iPod mini to 2005-09-06 I was told to plug my iPod into a wall outlet using my connector. I did that and although the iPod responds everytime it is plugged in by showing the apple logo it goes straight to a picture of plugging the iPod into a wall outlet and wont change from that. After awhile the screen just goes blank. I have tried reseting the iPod and have successfully seen the apple logo screen but every time I get to the same freeze point. I am wondering what I should do.

    Tracy,
Under the normal process, your iPod mini will show the running bar, indicating that it is trying to complete the restore process. Try to do a restore again and plug it to the AC charge striaght away. You may need to do several attempts

If using a Mac, use Migration Assistant to move your iTunes library from old computer to new.  Afterwards you can sync from your new computer to your iPod.
