Ipod goes directly to check symbol and "ok to disconnect"

So i have two old school ipods. Both 1st gens, one with a track wheel and the other with a stationary wheel. The one with a track wheel a 10Gig won't sync with my computer at all, the other does. I've tried many things to get it to work, what happens when I plug it in to my computer is goes to the apple symbol them goes to a picture of a check mark with "ok to disconnect" at the bottom, then goes directly to the main menu and starts charging. It doesn't show up in itunes or my computer. I've made no changes to either and have tried the whole restart thing with no avail. If anyone has any advice i'd love to hear it.

I've had a chance to test on a Mac at work, and had a simular issue there, I'm just going to mark it as solved as i've come to believe that it's possibly an issue with my firewire cable as it's as old as the iPod and has travelled around with me alot of the time.
Thanks Bill for your help, but I had restarted it and also had run the iPod’s inbuilt diagnostics and it passed all the tests I ran on the HDD, firewire port and the 1-5 test.
Conclusion is the cable.

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

Hello Norm,
Try a hard reset of the iPod. To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear again. Keep in mind, this troubleshooting procedure may take a few attempts.

When ever i turn on my ipod i get the itunes symbol and the cord

HELP! Yesterday my itouch 2nd generation 16Gb turned off and so i charged it thinking it would turn on like usual but when i turned it on, the apple showed up and then it would show the itunes symbol and the cord that you use to connect your ipod to the computer. So thinking that it would unlock my itouch, i plugged it into the computer but then a box appeared that said.... "itunes could not connect to your ipod "ipod touch" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the ipod before it can be used with itunes." But the problem with that is that i can't get onto my ipod because of the symbol saying htat i need to plug it into the computer and connect with itunes. Is there anything i can do to get it to unfreeze so i can enter my passcode??
p.s... I tried turning it off and turning it back on and i also tried pressing the top button and the center button trying to unfreeze my ipod touch.

this might work..I had the same problem and it worked for me...
You need to put your touch into recovery mode and then restore it. Here's how:
1. Disconnect it from your computer
2. Hold down the Sleep/Wake switch until you see the red slider. Turn it off.
3. Start iTunes
4. Hold down the Home button and keep holding it down while you plug the iPod back into your computer.
5. Keep holding down the Home button until iTunes responds with "and iPod has been detected in Recovery Mode". Release the Home button and follow the onscreen instructions to restore.

You have no choice but to restore the phone.
However, I'm sure you've been smart enough to have backed up your data before starting the most significant update in iOS history,right?

Ipod goes into disk check

Hello. When I plug my old ipod (3rd generation, I think) into my mac, about half the time it goes into what appears to be a disk check mode (a picture of a disk comes up). After a while (tens of minutes), it finishes and puts a "check mark" on the screen.
Does this mean the ipod's disk is about to fail?

Diagnostics probably can't fix any issues that it comes across. If you feel like there might be an issue with your iPod's hard disk, you can resolve it before it turns into anything monstrous. As long as everything that you have in your iPod is in your iTunes library, you should probably go ahead and restore the iPod. This will erase all of the files off of your iPod, however, it will also reinstall the player OS and fix any bad disk sectors it comes across. It will also defragment the drive. How can I stop Pages from changing parts of a document when I am progressing through an 8 page newsletter. When I go back to check something some headings have moved and been put out of context. I can't lock the individual pages of the document to prevent this happening.

I think you are talking about not having a DVD drive?
To install the DVD version, either get an external USB DVD drive, they are cheap on eBAy or borrow another computer and drag the iWork Installer onto a USB Flash Drive and install from that.

I have had the iPod for about 2 years, and never had this problem. When I plug into iTunes I get the "iTunes cannot connect with this iPod because of pass code" message, but I can't enter my pass code because the screen won't change! If someone could please help, it would be appriciated!

With your iPod still connected to your PC, try a hard reset. To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If still no luck, try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode using the instructions in this Apple support document and then restoring it to factory defaults in iTunes.

I have plugged it in and opened itunes. Nothing is there to sync. It will not power off.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

IPod Touch 5th gen RED product and Beats Pill disconnects

My iPod Touch 5th gen, RED product keeps disconnecting from my Beats Pill. I thought it was the Pill so I sent it back to the manufacturer, twice. Finally got a new Pill with the new firmware from them but the iPod Touch RED won't work. Boyfriend tested his regular iPod Touch 5th gen and my iPhone 5 with the Pill and they run for hours. iPod Touch RED disconnects within one song. SO annoying and I have no idea what the fix is. Help!

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. You will have to rejoins wifi networks as well as repair the headphones.
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I switched phones from an Iphone 4 to this Iphone 5S and my incoming calls are going directly to voice-mail and not ringing the phone. The only app I downloaded that is different from my Iphone 4 is the GroupMe app, but I don't know if that is necessarily the cause. Anyone have a suggestion? thanks

Hi,   I don't know if this info will help many, but for a few it may. I had this problem over the weekend. Called Tech Support 2x, they tried everything, resetting,, *73, *228, *900 , there were no "do not disturb" settings, etc.   They prepared a work ticket for the next level of help.
Meanwhile, I couldn't figure out what changed all of a sudden. I knew I had no calls coming in after accessing my voicemail. I looked at my recent calls and noticed i had dialed a *83 prior to the voicemail *86. Fat thumbs. I remember years ago, having the features of *83 for do not disturb and *84 to stop the feature.   Just for giggles, i dialed *84, tried from another phone calling my number and WHOOLA, it came thru.
If anyone has these issues, try the *73 first. But just for the heck of it, do *84 as well. Takes half a second.   If those dont' work, then call Tech Support. I wanted to share to help at least some of you as I understand the frustration of not having incoming calls. I even called Tech Support and shared the info. As this was not an option given to me from Tech Support, but then again, i don't believe *83 or *84 is offered anymore. I just dated myself, but hope it helps others !
