IPod Hard Disc Problems

Hi,
My iPod mini has a few hard drive problems. I restore it, I reformat it, I Reboot it. I some how manage to put one song on but otherwise its F%#@*ED!!
Thanks,
Luke Z

Have a read the following but I have a feeling that the Hard drive of your iPod is dead likes mine
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Hard disc problem?

Whenever I try to sync songs to it, it transfers normally for a bit, and then hangs up and won't transfer anymore, leaving only a few complete songs and the rest partial or untransfered. This is often followed by my music "disappearing" on my iPod. The space is still used, but it says there is no music on it. This problem has progressively worsened in the past week, to the point where I cannot sync any songs. My previous iPod suffered the same thing shortly before dieing completely. I have tried resetting, restoring, different USB ports, cables, syncing programs, and computers. Is there any way to have this fixed, since I've had my iPod for only four months?

If in warranty you need to contact HP warranty support to fix this otherwise if out of warranty you should copy your data/file to save them and buy a new HDD and if you didn't create the REcovery Media when you first bought the laptop you will need to reorder them from HP and use those to restore it back to Factory install.

    Dear Lenovo,
My T60 about four days ago has been ruined by a virus (spyware?) from xxxxxx.com, and since then I can not acces the hard disc. I can't boot the laptop and I have been used tools software such as chkdsk but still not working.
Please tell me how to solve this problem or please inform me where to find  lenovo authorised service centre in Jakarta, Indonesia for my T60.

    There are a few methods:
Restore your system using the recovery partition (I am unsure if you would lose any data on the existing drive - it is most likely you will)
Do a repair install of Windows if you have a Windows XP CD available (I do not know if Vista has this function)
Remove the hard drive from the computer, and plug it into a computer that has an antivirus already installed, using a laptop IDE to USB adapter if you have access to one
Look online to see if you can find more information about how to manually remove the virus - I have been unable to find that particular virus name - are you sure that is the virus you have?
It is likely your hard drive did not die, the virus just prevented your system from booting properly.

  • External Hard disc problem

I just bought a Samsung portable hard-disc (external) but I've run into some trouble.
I don't have a problem transferring files to the hard-disc from my old dell laptop (plug and play), and I can copy the files from the hard disc to my MBP. However, whenever I try to copy files from the MBP to the hard-disc, I get an error messag that goes: "xxx file may not be transferred because "New Volume" (title of hard-disc) cannot be modified.
I tried erasing the hard-disc using disc utility, and that allowed me to copy files from the MBP to the hard-disc. However, after doing so, my dell laptop couldn't detect the external hard-disc. I then formatted the hard-disc and gave it a disc-path on my dell, but when I did that, I got the aforementioned error message when I tried copying files over from my MBP to the external hard disc.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

The reason your Mac couldn't write to the disk initially is probably that your Dell formatted the disk as an NTFS volume (most Windows disk are formatted as NTFS these days). OS X can read an NFTS disk, but cannot write to it.
When you erased the disk with Disk Utility in OS X, it's likely that you reformatted the disk as an HFS+ volume (most OS X disks are formatted as HFS+ these days). Unfortunately, Windwos cannot read or write HFS+ without some third party software.
    You have two solutions available.
First, you could use Disk Utility (or the Windows equivalent) to format the drive as a FAT32 partition. Both Windows and OS X can read and write to FAT32. However, FAT32 is a bit of an outdated standard, inferior to both NTFS and HFS+.
The other option is to keep the disk formatted as HFS+, but use third party software to work with the disk in Windows. Google "Macdrive" and you will find some nice software for this. The downside here is that you have to buy a third-party program. However, HFS+ is far superior to FAT32, and at least you can try out Macdrive for free before deciding to pay up and go this route in the long run.

  • IPod hard disk problem

I got my iPod this christmas, and it worked out fine for a month and half or so.. now-a-days I restored it because I had to force it into disk mode all the time to make it work. Yet, everytime I did this, the same problem arose as my screen repeteadly froze when I began listening to my songs. Then, the iPod sad face appeared.
I still havent resolved this issue.

  • Help!!! hard disc problem message 40gb zen ex

My son purchased a Zen Extra 40 gb about 6 months ago and now will not operate. When trying to reboot, no matter what you try and do, harddisc problem message is displayed. What if any thing can we do? If it's something we can't fix ourselves, where can we send it for repair? Can't seem to find any info on non-warranty repairs! He spent his own money to purchase this... I'd hate to see it go to waste after only 6 months.

  • External Hard Disc problems after upgrade from OSX 10.4 to 10.6

I have a La Cie external hardisk which I connect to my MacBook Pro with a firewire cable. It is formatted with UFS/Unix filesystem and was very fussy about being unplugged without being ejected under 10.4. If it was accidently unplugged with 10.4 it would take about 10 minutes to mount the next time it was plugged in, while it was checked, but would work fine.
Now with 10.6.1 the permissions show me having only read access (so I decided to make a copy of the disk and reformat it). Unfortunately when the disk is plugged in, it immediately shows in the finder, but is behaving strangely - it only shows some of the files in the filesystem and ceases to function at all after a few minutes. If I try to verify the disk using Disk Utility I get an error message saying that it is unable to unmount. I've also tried DiskWarrior, but it says the filesystem is unsupported.
Any ideas would be gratefully received...
    Thanks!
    Chris

this very much sounds like a failing/failed hard drive. you can try reformatting it wile booted from the snow leopard install dvd using disk utility there. if that does not work (I suspect it won't) I would get rid of it altogether.

  • Serious hard disc prob

Hi, this is my first posting I am glad that there are forums related to Creatives buggy software. Heres my problem:
my Nomad Jukebox 3 which I ve had for 2 years has all of a sudden stopped working, meaning when I start it up, it automatically goes into rescue mode. When I tried disc cleanup it does nothing, when I reload OS it says hard disc problem, and when I reboot it just brings me back to rescue mode as well as reseting the player through the back.
Today I tried to format, and I was at the point where I was willing to lose 3,000 songs just to get my player back to normal, well needless to say it also brought up those famous words "hard disc problem."
Ive scoured through Creatives website for any clues on how to fix this problem, which brings me here. Ive emailed them telling them the problem, and they suggest I pay 40 U.S. plus shipping and handling and then wait a month or so and pay through the nose to get it fixed. Well I li've in Canada, so its goign to cost me more, also, I am a student so I dont have that kinda cash lying around.
Is there anything I can do to solve this (at least to me) serious problem? or should I buy an IPod when money is available?
    thanks.

Yeah, I have the same problem. This is definitely a problem Creative needs to address. Stupid hard disk. It sounds like a head crash, where the head is just smashing up against the metal palettes in the hard dri've. It kind of sucks. Really. Really. Hard. Mine is a Zen Touch, and I've only had it a month. BUT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER CAN YOU SWITCH TO APPLE. I mean, just look at them, hoping to attract people with a screenless, music playing stick of gum. Phhhhh.

  • Hard disc crackles occasionally

    Hi all,
I have had my new MBP for a month now and mostly it is silent (apart from soft fan noise when it's working hard), but lately I have noticed that sometimes the hard disc will start to crackle just like an old PC. This will go on for quite a while - several minutes. It happens mainly (almost exclusively) when I have the computer on my lap rather than at my desk.
Is this a sign of a hard disc problem, or normal?
    Thanks,
    Sean

I would get it looked at ASAP. A noisy hard drive can be serious. KEEP BACKING UP!

  • IPod folder icon, no communication, hard disc error problems

    Hi,
For a while now, I've been getting a message when I plug it into my computer: 'ipod_control/device/sysInfo is corrupt, please run chkdsk.'
Last night I ripped a few CDs and uploaded them to the pod. I noticed that not all the tunes had copied over. I tried again a few times and kept getting the error "The iPod <podname> cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-36)". I tried uploading a tune at a time and it was incredibly slow and eventually just stopped altogether.
So I figured it was maybe time to follow the instructions and run chkdsk. This seemed to fix three broken files including the one mentioned above and a couple of tunes, so I rebooted etc and tried uploading tunes again. Same as before.
So then I thought, OK, maybe I need to get the latest iPod software. I downloaded it and went to update it and it initialised OK, then said something about that it couldn't write the new software due to a hard disc error.
Then all it would give me was an exclamation mark and a folder icon on the pod screen.
I then went to the Apple site and followed various instructions about resetting it and putting it into disk mode, to try and run the update there, and the updater hung, giving me only a blank screen without even getting past the initialisation stage any more. I managed to get the pod out of disk mode but all it does now is give me the !folder icon on the screen.
Now the computer won't even recognise it as an ipod when it's plugged in, just a removable disc. When I click on the disc in Windows explorer, it asks me if I want to format it.
I've tried the updater again and it still doesn't get past the initialisation stage. Which means I don't even have the option of doing a Restore, as far as I can see.
Have I killed my iPod? Is there a way I can get it back? Obviously it would be nice to get all my tunes back but if I have to start again, so be it.
    Thanks,
    Jo
    Update:
Never mind.... After more shenanigans with my Windows box, I decided there was nothing else to be done but to zap the Pod and start again. I took it to my iBook which was only too happy to talk to the Pod and reformat it and restore it. I am now reaching for my CD collection....
(Incidentally, the only reason I was using Windows in the first place is because that particular machine is much quicker at ripping CDs)

  • New iPod 160 iTunes 10.4.0.80 slightly used...had been docked to BOSE portable after sync -- had to reset -- didn't work, hard disc status will not pull

Have 2 new iPod classics -- later docked to BOSE Portable. Synced. Hung. Reset for Apple symbol which sat there. Hard disc function, iTunes does not recognize. iTunes is version 10.4.0.80 Can buy a third. Probably same thing will happen. Had once managed to have ITunes find, had to completely add all new back in (there is only about 24 gig left of the 160 gigs -- so that takes a long time) -- but iTunes just won't recognize...ideas???

I finally stumbled across a fix for this problem, and in case someone else is frustrated at some point by a similar issue I'm posting what finally worked to enable me to bring iTunes up at any time (without rebooting first).
The solution was to go to the preferences to uncheck "search for shared libraries".
I'm glad the problem is fixed, but Apple developers really should include a timeout function on iTunes search for a shared libraries. At least a visual dialog to confirm that the application is in the process of searching for a shared library on the network would help provide clues as to what is causing the spinning beach ball to appear right about the time the application window should pop up.

  • Big problem possibly hard disc

My iPod has just recently freezing constantly during certain songs and thus gave me a message to restore it using iTunes. I did this and after recconectiing I types the name etc and then I went tocopy some songs over. After about 130 songs (in the process ofcopying more) it started making very noisy beeps and showed signs of unneccessary hard disk activity, which ater a short pause continued. After I ejected my iPod to see how it was going I discovered that it had wiped every song just copied over, and now it is not recognised by either my Wndows XP Pro machine or my Windows Vista Home Premium laptop and just get told by iTunes to restore it, but can't as the tab doesn't appear. As it only affected certain songs, I imagine that it is a hardarefault. Also before his which has rendered it useless it was very dodgy at turning off, is that a common problem. I bought my iPod at my local Currys on the 28th June last year so i assume they wouldnt have to help with getting a replacement. Any help much appreciated
Currently the only message I get from iTunes is that it cannot read the contents of my iPod

Yeah but I don't know if I still have my receipt though so can't prove the purcahse, and I didn't have internet when I bought it so haven't registered it. Only got as far as proof of purchase yesterday. Also I used my older PC running iTunes 6 (still XP Pro) and it restored it successfully to software version 1.1.1 (like when purchased) and it worked temporarily (with problems displaying artist if album name hadn't been filled etc) then when I copied about 200 songs back to it and it froze and was wiped when I ejected it. Now the "iTunes cannot read your iPod message" has reappeared. I'm suspect that a part of the hard disc has broken and it cannot copy by it

  • My hard disc has failed how can I download data from my ipod to a new hard  disc?

my hard disc has failed how do i transfer the data on my Ipod/Ipad to a new hard disc?

In addition to the comments above, when you create a new library with the media that you recover this will be treated as "new" for the device and iTunes may want to wipe it and start over, losing any personal data and settings. The following approach ought to help.
    You should be able to:
Backup the device to your iTunes installation
Transfer your purchases into a library authorized to your account
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer (same as above)
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
