Ipod has been detected. But WON"T work!

Every time I plug in my ipod nano 3rd genaration, It says:
An ipod has been detected. But could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect ipod and try again.
I've tried this over, over, and over again. This never seems to work.
What should I do?

  • A new ipod has been detected but cannot be identified. [drivers?]

Yes -that again- the reason I'm making a new post is that this is the second time an ipod hasn't worked with me, I would like to know if there's something I can do to my system or whatever to repair it. Here's the situation.
    - Just so ya know, I use Vista on a laptop [unfortunatley]
    - Previously [as in yesterday] I had an ipod touch, it was stuck in recovery mode and nothing [and I mean nothing] worked to recover it, it wasn't being recognized at all. This problem occured when I installed Itunes 9.
    - Today I bought myself a brand new iPod Nano (5th Gen) for several reasons [not just to do with the itouch breaking, I was sick to death of the thing in general], took it home and connected it. 'A new ipod has been detected but cannot be identified' yadda yadda.
    - I tried everything, I have also downgraded my itunes back to 8, still the same message!! Argh! Here's the thing (that I think might be causing the problem) when I open Device Manager and go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, there is no apple/ipod recognized. There is a 'USB Mass Storage Device' whch has an error symbol next to it, I've tired updating/reinstalling it etc and it doesn't work ):
    - Is there anything anyone can do? I'm so sick of ipods breaking on me. Just so you guys know, I'm not completley computer savvy so i'll need precise instructions, thanks so much to anyone who can help me.

This is how it's displayed: http://i50.tinypic.com/nd7vk7.jpg
And this is what happens when I click properties and 'search for solutions': http://i47.tinypic.com/2iu3vrc.jpg (the box disappears after that, apparently having done nothing, when I search online for software it informs me my computer already has the best/latest installed)
    I use a Toshiba Satelite L350-170, my Vista is a 32-bit Thankyou!

  • "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly" error

We have had five iPod Nano's installed via our home computer (Dell PC - Windows Vista):
one 2nd generation (currently being used)
one 3rd generation (not in use - was lost)
one 4th generation (not in use - was stolen)
two 5th generations (currently being used)
The iTunes 10.0.1 Update was installed during the first of the two 5th geneartions installation process.
We recently bought another 5th generation. When we went to install it, we received the error message "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly". The 2nd generation can access the entire library and download music but the two 5th generations are no longer able to access the library and download music. Basically, they can only be used to listen to the current music within does 5th generation iPod Nano's.
We tried everything that's been recommended in the Support section but nothing has worked in order to restore the capability of accessing the library and downloading music for the 2 generations....This is where we need HELP!!!
As for the new 5th generation, we have installed it into our laptop instead with no problems (so far). We've read that there is a way to move the iTunes Library from one computer to another which we hope this will be an option once we fix the issue of the two 5th generations.
If anyone can provide any recommendations please post. We have spent the better part of our weekend trying to fix this problem with alot of frustration along the way.
    Thank you

Uninstall everything from your pc that is published by Apple. This includes; iTunes, Quicktime, and Bonjour. I also had this problem and it is VERY frustrating. Then re-install iTunes of course.

  • How come when i connect my nano to my computer it says in itunes "an ipod has been detected but could not be itentified properly"?

whenever i connect my ipod nano to my computer, itunes gives me a pop-up that says, "an ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect the ipod, then try again." when i do that, i get the same pop-up. beneath the pop-up stated before it also says "If the problem persists, uninstall Itunes, then install Itunes again." but after doing that, it still will not read my ipod and scan it in.

Does the Apple ID on the iPod match the Apple ID on iTunes?

  • "An iPod has been detected, but it has not been identified properly."

Okay so at first my ipod wouldn't sync at all, so it would just freeze up. So i went onto one of the apple support pages and did all this confusing stuff. i have ONE more step until i fix the problem, but i can't find the page on apple.com anymore! Now, it says "an ipod has been detected, but it has not been identiefied properly. Please disconnect, then try again."
I know that the step has something to do with changing something in the "your home directory" or something like that. Anyone know what i'm talking about?

  • IPod has been detected, but coudl not be identified properly? Help!

I'm trying to put songs on my mom's new iPod. It has never been used before, and it is an iPod 5th generation nano. I'm using Windows XP.
Every time I connect it to iTunes, it says "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod and try again."
I've disconnected and reconnected it about 15 times now, restarted the iPod, deleted and reinstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, and it still says the same thing.
    What can I do?

    Anyone?

  • Upgraded to 11.1.4.62.  Now iTunes is saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly.  Disconnect then reconnect ..."  I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I stopped and started the service.  I reset the iPod.  When I put it in disk

I upgraded to 11.1.14.62 this morning.  Not iTunes is saying "An iPod had been detected but could not be identified properly".  I unlugged/replugged in.  I reset the iPod, I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I'ver tried three different cables.
When I put the iPod in disk mode it shows up briefly as a disk then goes away.
    Any ideas?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.
