IPOd Has Died

My 2nd generation Nano is all of two months old, and it seems to have died. I last used it without problem this past Friday afternoon, but when I attempted to turn it on Sunday evening, it wouldn't turn on. I've been through all 5 R's, but nothing happened. In addition, when I connect to my computer with the USB cable, I get an error message on the computer that says that the USB device is not recognized. In addition, the iPod itself gets very warm right away.
Is there anything that can be done, or is it pretty much toast?

Well first you locate your Caps Lock key. It is located above shift, and below tab. Now you press it, and take a deep breath. If your iPod is outside of its service, have you looked into other options like local repair shops? Sometimes they still service older products.

My iPod has died from a dead battery, but when i plug it into a power source, it just keeps giving me the apple logo and a darkly lit screen and sometimes flashes white. Is there anything i can do to fix it or do i have to get it replaced?

- Try on another computer

I believe my Ipod has died

I have a Ipod mini and I bought it in july of 2005. I have been told that the battery dies after two years.
Im starting to believe that.
It wont charge when I plug it into a wall unit or into my computer. When I try to turn it on the apple sign pops up then the sad ipod icon comes on. I tried to restart and restore it but both dont work.
At the moment I have it plugged into a wall charger and the apple sign is on then the sad ipod.
Is my Ipod died and done with?
What should I do?

First, I also agree that it is probably the right time to have a battery replacement, but you have to deal with the sad iPod icon, which caused by the sudden cut off of the battery power - the HD stuck at a certain point .. but have a read of the following

3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. My Ipod has died a death...

...when i go to turn it on now, it either shows the sad face or the exclamation mark. It has done this before and was fixed by restoring the ipod. However, now, when i plug it into the computer (i have tried two different USB cables) it will not start up, and shows the battery symbol frozen for a while before returning to the sad face and then back to the battry.
Any ideas what to do apart from throw it in the bin and buy a different mp3 player?

IPod has died and leaked liquid :-s

I have had my iPod for around 20 months and overnight it has completely died and I awoke to find liquid had seeped out (nothing had dripped or been spilt on it) and a clicking noise - similar to the searching sound. Having seen some other posts saying that batteries would normally last longer than this (admittedly i do use it alot)and despite being virtually empty would still recognise something. My charge length has been fine showing no signs that it was almost empty.
Has the battery liquid leaked out causing it to fail? Has anyone reported anything similar? Do i just need a new battery?
Any help would be grateful!

Reality check,Tim. There are no fluids in an iPod to leak out. The batery does not contain liquid.
Your cat probably pee'd on it, or somebody knocked a glass of water on it. that's why Apple actually builds in internal moisture sensors to determine whether its' been submerged.
It's toast - go buy another one.

My ipod has died

I'm trying to be matter of fact about the issue, because I truly doubt there is any hope:
Ipod was bought a little under a year and a half ago. I was using i-tunes this afternoon, i think at least version 6. I was also using a program called ipod agent, which allows one to get songs off an ipod without synching it to itunes (because who has a 40 G hard drive to keep copies of music on? isnt that why we have this so-called 'external' hard drive?). Maybe had a small problem once a while ago, but it was fixed easily, and i am not sure it can be attributed to this other program. ANYWAY. Itunes recognized my ipod and i saw all my songs, but when i went to play one of them through itunes, little exclamation point next to song showed up. Also, i was unable to get songs through ipod agent. Then i realized that i heard the ipod making its thinking sound, that whirring sound, over and over without ever stopping, like it kept trying to load and reload. I tried ejecting safely through itunes, nothing, so i unplugged it myself, which i have done before once or twice with no problems, accidentally. after that, the do not unplug sign never went away, so i reset (center button plus menu), and when it came back, all my music was gone. reset again (cos the last time this happened, it worked), i got the folder with the ! and the web address. downloaded ipod update, tried to plug in ipod again, but it kept making the spinny noise, finally, i thought that it had loaded, but then it wouldnt stop again. so i unplugged it again. cos i thought leaving it doing that forever wasnt going to be the greatest either. so i am screwed huh? its not that i am surprised it broke, i didnt treat it terribly, but i definitely used it often. what ****** me off the most is that apple thinks everyone in the world can have 40 gig of music on their harddrive. the people who made ipod agent are geniuses, but i am going to be upset if thats what killed my ipod, because i never would have had to download it if apple had just made it easier to transfer music back and forth in the first place.

This might help... but if it is clicking there might be a problem inside.
Lets keep it simple for now. Could you also include which generation you have on your next post when you tell me the good news.
Make sure your iPod is charged by charging it for 30 minutes or more. There are some issues with drained iPods Then open your hard drive and find the system folder.
Then find the following: /System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext
Drag it to the trash and empty trash. Restart your Mac and haave the ipod connected.
If that does not work, you may need to restore your ipod and repeat the above steps. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983

My classics IPOD has died over the weekend and I plan to but an IPOD Touch -- but need to to 'work' and simply sync all my 'old' music on a plug and play basis -- or is that wishful thinking ? I need it urgently for a holiday so only time to buy it n run

Any advice on :
1. The Touch as a product
2. The likely chances of plug and play resync to new device without hours of 'fiddling' / support calls
or I can just use my Shuffle I guess ----

There should be no problems, make sure to have all the needed software updates for Windows and the new iTunes 10.5 installed before connecting your iPod touch.
You already know how the basic sync process is working, there are a few more features added like mail for example: iOS: Syncing with iTunes

Ipod has dieing ipod picture on screen

i was just listening to my ipod (30gb ipod video) at work yesterday and it was on shuffle on all my songs and once it finished one of the songs, the next song didnt start playing so i looked at it and it was frozen so i reset the ipod by holding menu and the middle button and then it rebooted itself and when it turned on there was a picture of a dead ipod with X's as eyes and and s sad face with the ! mark in a sign and it says www.apple.com/support/ipod. While im holding it when i turn it on and its doing this i can feel the gears in side of it or what ever thats in there like clicking and i hold it up to me ear and i hear a clicking noise then after about 5 seconds it turns off...anyone know why this is happeneing and how to fix it? plz help thank you much

I've had exactly the same problem for the last week or so. I thought I'd give fixing it one more try before I decided to invest in a new 30GB video one (I have an old school one) and I am SO glad that I did!

Seriously, I know it might sound strange but all I needed was to take my iod apart and insert a business card and my iPod works perfectly!!

IPod has died, my options?

Within the last 48 hours my 4th gen iPod bit the dust
two days ago it would skip every 10 seconds in the middle of a song, and then occasionally at the end of the song it would blip a .5 second excerpt from another song... crazy stuff
so i tried resetting, disk mode, i tried the ipod updater (says "iPod service error")
also, the connection at the bottom tends to disconnect/reconnect depending on how well i have the plug situated (this is not the plug, but the ipod, as it does it with any plug i try)
so, what im asking you (the community), is what are my options?
my warranty is up (2yr old), and I failed to purchase an extended warranty...
To service my ipod, it see it would cost me some $250 dollars... which is pointless to me, i might as well buy a new one...
What im looking to find out, though, is: can i purchase the apple extended warranty?

No, you are too late to buy the extended warranty as it must be purchased before the original warranty expires.
You could try some 3rd party repairer such as iPodResQ.

New ipod has died

I bought my husband a new classic on Monday, charged it overnight and he started using it yesterday, everything worked great. Then he put it down for a couple of hours and now nothing at all, the screen is blank like its just come out of the box and when we plug it in to charge there is still nothing. Is it broken or are we missing something obvious?

Try Resetting your iPod. Toggle the hold switch off and on a few times then hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then the menu button to go to the normal display: iPod won't turn on

My iPod nano 2nd edition has died on me. I can press on menu and centre of the wheel and the apple logo comes on for seconds, then I get a glimpse of the menu list then the screen goes dead. What can I do? Can anyone help please?

Probably not a good sign especially given the age of the device. Are you able to get it into Disk Mode long enough so that you can restore it in iTunes?
