Ipod hates to fly

I got my Ipod mainly because I travel a lot and thought it would be nice for those long flights. The problem is my ipod hates to fly. Every time I try to use it during a flight after only a couple of songs it locks up. I returned it to the apple store, they gave me a new one and on the very first flight it did the same thing. During lockup it totally drains the battery in just a short time. I have a 30G ipod.
Anyone else have an issue like this or any suggestions. At this point I feel like my ipod is a $400 paper weight.

OK....lets see doing a search likethat yielded 147 hits for last year (search criteria IPOD).
Of those posts I would say half (lets say 73) deal with battery life (will the ipod last xx hours), headphones, chargers, etc.
The other half (74) of the posts would deal with ipod problems during flight and of those you need to weed out the actual post that started the thread and not the responses....so lets say we get 37..... and there is a higher incidence of 60 GB ipods reported with this problem than 30 gb ipods.
37 unique posts of actual problems with ipod during flights....thats pretty low for a device that sold (according to Apple) 22 million ipods in 2005. Lets say that the sold the same amount of ipods last year.....22 million and of those 22 lets say 147 failed during flight....the percentage is too small to calculate. On the other hand searching for firmware problems using the same criteria yield 500 hits just last year.
Checking another good source of information (the ilounge.com forums) and searching on airplane on the ipod with video problems forum) yields just 30 hits.... so if we add 30 plus 147 = 177 and lets assume that those 177 posts are actual problems thats still 177 problematic ipods out of 22 million...do you see a pattern here....the incidence of this issue is too small to measure.
Of course that those not mean that there could not be a problem with a certain batch, but to call it widespread is a little extreme.
There are more unique posts about problems with upgrade firmware (back in the 1.1 days with the 60GB ipods) that with this problem.
Also I would think that if an airline cabin is not pressurized properly, we would have bigger problems than a broken ipod. Even if the cabin is pressured to make us feel that we are at 8000 feet (instead of 30,000) there would be people on the plane suffering from Altitude Sickness, which, based on the individual can start at those 8,000 feet.
Mr. Kaya4fish has been unlucky...he got a bad ipod...and a little bit more unlucky since the replaced ipod was also bad. He should try to get a new one and see if the problem repeats itself.
Maybe the definition of "lots of posts" could be a little deceiving....this particular thread for example has 2 unique posts reporting this issue out of 13....it can be perceived as common because when things work you do not see people saying "hey I went on a trip around the world and my ipod worked fined" or "I upgraded to firmware xyz and I did not have any issues etc".
but ok....in summary this user has a problem and he needs to get a new ipod to correct it....no use blowing making the problem bigger than what it actually is.

  • My ipod hates me

so let me tell you the story of why I've come to the conclusion my iPod hates me.
I was listening to music and cleaning my turtle tank a few feet away when the music stopped. The computer made the disconnecting sound when an iPod is unplugged from the computer. About a minute later it made the connecting sound when you dock your iPod. I come to the computer and all my 3000+ songs, 35+ videos and pictures have been deleted. I thought it was a glitch so I unplugged my iPod and turned it off. But when I turned it back on, the songs were still gone. I was like oh well I'll just get all my songs again and re-upload them. But I re-docked it and a balloon popped up and it said some file was corrupt. I have no idea where this file is. Now everytime I dock my iPod I have to go through the registering process of when you first dock your iPod. And everytime I upload songs, they don't stay on the iPod.
so someone please tell me what the "h-e-double hockey sticks" happened and what is wrong with my iPod

    couple more things
it still says I'm using 22 gigs on it. but I found that only the pictures remained. so are my files hidden or something?
and I had it plugged into my car with one of those ipod car connectors so I can listen to it when I'm driving. and it had been plugged in there all night. when I went and got it this morning, it said there was no battery power left. but the connector charges the iPod. is there something wrong with my iPod or is everything else screwy?

  • IPOD hates my computer!

I'm trying to set up on ipod for my mum. However it hates my computer!! On initial installation ipod crashed the computer, then after re-start everything uploaded ok - music etc. Next time I pluged the ipod into the PC it crashed windows. This has now happened every time I try and upload more music into the ipod. If I start the PC with the IPOD pluged in windows wont even start up - I just get a black screen - have to force re-boot. If I plug in post start up it recognises the IPOD then crashes, I can't open ITUNES/Control panel/anything to try and do the apple recommended "fixes" either.
Does anyone have any ideas on this??
I have tried seting the IPOD to disk mode and while I can work on the computer with it like this I can't eject the IPOD or open ITUNES!!
    Please help!!
    Cheers

    Hi.
Have experienced a similar problem. It's most likely that your USB 2.0 port is based on an ALI chipset. So, here's my success path:
    1. Purchase and install a USB 2.0 PCI card that uses a NEC chipset - such as BELKIN.
    2. Install drivers supplied with card
    3. Plug in IPOD and you should find a world of difference.
Depending upon the state of your IPOD, further recovery actions MAY be necessary as follows:
    1. Format IPOD at the control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disk management level; NTFS format will likely be the only file system possible (windows 2000 and XP).
    2. With your IPOD connected, re-install the IPOD setup software on your PC - downloadable from apple site.
    3. With IPOD still connected, accept all prompts to restart your computer - may happen as many as 2 times.
    4. With IPOD still connected, run the IPOD setup utility - found in IPOD folder at START menu - RESTORE IPOD to factory settings.
Once the IPOD is restored to factory settings, you should be in business. Again, my main problem was the ALI based USB card and associated drivers. Once I started using the NEC based card, all of the bad stuff went away.
    Hope this helps....

  • My ipod hates my new mac!!!

I have had a 5th generation ipod 30GB video for about a year and a half that I have been using with a PC. I recently received a macbook for Christmas and it has been giving me fits when I tried to connect it to my new laptop. I connected the ipod and clicked sync. When it was almost done syncing, the ipod suddenly started making clicking noises. About 30 seconds later, an error message appeared saying that my ipod had been ejected. I checked the connection to the computer and to the ipod, both were intact. The clicking became louder and I reset the ipod. I then plugged it back into my macbook and restored it to factory settings. I then tried to sync the ipod to my itunes library again. The same error came up, the same clicking happened. Please help, I'm a new mac user and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Make sure you're using a USB and not a firewire cable. Does the iPod ever show up as a disk in a Finder window? Check out the following article:

  • My ipod hates my computer

everytime i connect the ipod to the computer, the computer shuts down. also if the ipod is connected to the computer while the comp is loading it freezes. and when i disconnect the ipod to restart my comp, the comp is fine

    hi Liza!
hmmmm. are you getting a blue screen? if so, what error number and message are you getting? here's a reference:
    http://kadaitcha.cx/stop_err.html
if you aren't seeing a blue screen during the shutdown, try changing the setting described here:
Jonathan Wildstrom, "Computer Restarts while Installing iTunes Update" #8, 04:19pm Aug 23, 2005
(i'm asking, because there's three common reasons for a bluescreen reason under these circumstances: a bad dock or PC internal-USB problem, old roxio software, or antivirus software problems. the blue screen message might help us narrow in on the problem.)

  • My ipod HATES itunes

Everytime I connect my iPod to my PC it erases all my iTunes. They're still in my iTune library, just not on my iPod. Usually I'll update iTunes or restart my comp and that'll work. But still, this is absolute bull.
The funny thing is, I could steal all the music I wanted and be able to play that, it's just the stuff I payed for on iTunes I can't use. I guess apple is trying to tell me something.
    Any thoughts?

    Trevor,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You're not making much sense. You say <cite> Everytime I connect my iPod to my PC it erases all my iTunes. They're still in my iTune library, just not on my iPod.</cite>
How can you have iTunes erased, but still have the songs in your library? Please clarify and maybe someone could help.

  • My ipod hates my laptop

I purchased my ipod Classic in December, and my laptop is a Compaq Presario (over a year old).
I spent hours with helpdesk trying to the Classic to show up in device manager (thus, itunes). We tried everything, finally I gave up and decided to use my old desktop (HP that runs on Windows XP). My ipod classic works fine with the old desktop.
Oddly enough, last week my laptop needed a new keyboard, and holy cow! My ipod worked with my laptop... I assumed it was a USB issue that was corrected my the new keyboard.
    After two days, my ipod would no longer work with my laptop. Same issue as before, I plug in the device, it reads 'connecting,' then just as fast it then reads, 'ok to disconnet.' {side note, my nano works fine with laptop}
I have done everything (re-installing/updating itunes, windows 7, and driver updates).
Before I break my laptop and/or Ipod Classic - anyone have any ideas and/or suggestions?

I've gone thru all the steps described in the link listed, multiple times actually, to no avail.
A couple of other things that are happening is that when I sync even a partial amount of my library to the iPod after disconnecting the music is not on the iPod. Also most of the time when the sync is finished a popup window will come up saying that there is not enough space left on the iPod to sync to. (I know for a fact that the music on my laptop hard drive barely fills up half of the 148GB avail. on the iPod.)

  • Love the iPod, hate iTunes, Help?

I've got the 30GB Ipod Photo and I am about ready to give up on ITunes, it just does not meet my needs.
Is there any other way of maintaining my music & pictures on the IPOD?
I want to be able to sync up new podcasts while I am away from home, my IPod is 30GB and my Laptop is 20GB, so putting the whole media library on the laptop is not an option. My media library does not change often and I have it stored on desktops at home.
I don't use playlists, I just have directories of music, that I have invested hundreds of hours ripping to MP3. Do I really have to create playlists? I generally listen to entire albums at a time.
Sorry for the negativity, I have been struggling for a while trying to get used to iTunes, very unsuccessfully.

    hiya!
there are various windows-based third party packages that might work for you, but i don't have a lot of experience with them. (TBird is good at this, but i haven't seen him/her around much lately.)
it may be worth checking in over at ilounge or ipod garage forums for testimonials for and discussion of the other packages.

  • Does my ipod hate me?

Just posted this on the big thread but I thought some pure macOfiles might have more insight for me.
So it does this thing when its been turned off and sitting on my desk for a few days.......when I plug it into the computer itunes says that it cant read the ipod and that I should use the updater to reset it. The custom desktop icon that I put on the ipod is still there and the name I gave it is also still the same. When I dump it off of the desktop the ipod thinks that its completely empty, no music or video's......
So this has happened a couple of times, and every time I reset it and put every thing back on. it seems like if I use it for a few minutes once a day, every day, that it doesnt do any of this. But if I dont use it for a couple of days it gets mad at me. My ipods acting like my girlfriend!!! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!
but seriously....what do you folks think I should do??

Why not just leave it plugged into the computer? It won't hurt the battery because it shuts off the charging ones it's full, and if should keep it from shutting down and causing the problem. (especially if you are like me, and the computer stays on almost 24/7)

  • I do belive that my 40g 4G ipod hates me, hardrive problums? again

i have had this problum before, im lissining to it and all of a sudden it freezes. I reset it like you say but when it reboots it shows a file with a ! by it and says "apple.com/support" so i go there and i try everything and nothing. It sounds like the harddrive is going even louder than normal and im hearing odd clicks. last time it did this i sent it in and it was fixed. So my question is: is there any other way to fix it other than sendding it in? does my warenty reset when I got my fixed ipod back? Do 40g ipods just have issues? remember this has happend before.

I have a quick question for you. Can you tell me how often you are putting songs on and off of your iPod?
I had this problem with my wife's and I fixed hers but it was a drawn out process to do it. Had a friend try doing the same fix and it worked with his and his had been dead for 3 months and is now working fine. I just can't believe that the problem that they both had comes down to basically re-partitioning/formatting the drive. It's too simple for a problem that almost seems to happen across the board.
The reason I'm asking the question is that each time you write a file to a hard drive and then remove and then add another file you get what is called framentation on the drive. With fat32 partitions, used for Windows version of iPod, eventually you will get a non-responsive drive if you don't "de-frag" the drive. Having said that I wonder if everyone that has an iPod shouldn't de-frag them at least once a month.
Sorry about the ramble but if you can tell me how often you loaded songs and then how long it took before you started seeing any kind of problems it would help out. At the same time if you want to try the fix that I used on my wife's iPod you can go to my post at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=288180&tstart=0
Can't guarantee that it will work but it may. As for your warranty I was told that on replacements it is 90 days or the remainder of your original warranty. Whichever one is longer.

  • DVD to iPod issues (or: why does my iPod hate me?)

I recently discovered HandBrake, and find it amazing for ripping DVDs to watch on the computer, using iTunes or QuickTime Player. Transferring to the iPod, however, seems to be a whole different animal.
I have generated MP4 files with HandBrake, using the two available codecs (MPEG-4 and AVC/H.264). When those wouldn't transfer to the iPod, I converted them with iSquint, using H.264 encoding to see if that would make a difference. Still no luck. Finally, I used the "Convert selection for iPod" function within iTunes. No dice.
The error messages I'm getting each time are:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod because your iPod software is too old. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
"[video file] was not copied because the video format is not supported by the iPod."
Seeing as how I'm on my third 5th-generation iPod (the first two suffered from constant-freezing syndrome after updating to software version 1.2), I'm not keen to update again anytime soon.
Why do the MP4 files I generated not transfer to the iPod, yet a couple other MP4s I have downloaded transfer just fine? When is an MP4 not an MP4?
This is exactly the sort of headache I was trying to avoid when I switched to Mac.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
iMac 17" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   30GB iPod with video (software ver. 1.1.2), iTunes 7.0.2

I just got my Video iPod this week and I'm new to ripping DVD's and such so I'm no expert, but I had to chime in on this one because the same error message you got about the video not being supported by iPod just happened to me today. I was following the instructions on the how to's of using HandBrake I found on iLounge.com. It gives a caveat at the beginning not to start ripping DVD's until you know that the settings you've chosen actually transfer and work on your iPod. This warning was helpful to a newbie like me because I would have assumed that if I can play back the mp4 I just ripped on my computer then the iPod should be able to handle the file. As you know, there are different settings to allow for different video/audio quality in HandBrake. In my case, the first title I ripped looked pretty decent. Transferred it over to the iPod and it worked really well. Using the same exact DVD and mp4 format, I was just experimenting with settings, seeing how far up I can go as far as video/audio quality and when I chose settings that, in combination, were too high, that's when I experienced that same message you received about the video not being supported by iPod. In my case, what I did was I re-ripped the same DVD title, just went down a notch in the audio settings and left the video settings alone and that made my mp4 file iPod-compatible again. If you used the same exact settings for ripping all your DVD's and some worked and some didn't, then I'd say you have another problem all together and maybe someone with more experience will jump in to assist you. Hope this helps...

  • Ipods hate me

I am on my 3rd ipod in less than a year. They all have done the same thing. One minute fine, the next...sad mac with exclamation point, lots of clicking noises, a unanimated battery icon, an apple logo, back and forth, back and forth. Can't do the 5 r's. Can't see the ipod on the computer. tried everything they say. Is it me? Do I have bad energy or something? I am tempted to think it might have something to do with my car tune base. I do use it alot. I upgraded this unit after my 2nd ipod died. I never let the ipod charge down and recharge, should I? I've had a mini, color and now a video.

    Surprise !!!
May be the fung shui (please do a search on Google if you do not what it is) -as most of the chinese will blame the problem with this issue.
Make the long story short, can you find a window PC, have a plug of your iPod with it, and try to do a Restore there (it will have better chance to get recognized it this way). Once it has been done (even the Restore is not successful), re-connect your iPod with your Mac, open the disk utility (hope it will show up there), then go to Tab ERASE and click Erase. Then open the iPod updater and click Restore.

  • My Ipod hates me. please help

*sigh. my ipod is causing me to want to shoot myself in the foot. I went to turn it on and it wouldnt come on so, I thought maybe it was dead and plugged it into my car charger to continue listening. It refused to come on and showed the little sad icon with an error. I tried to reset it and put it into disk mode like the website suggests and still nothing. It just continues to make the face at me, then say please wait very low battery, and then go to the apple icon, in this vicious little cycle over and over again. It is very annoying. I know very well that it is charged, I've had it plugged in for two days. I've tried switching the usb ports and everything. _PLEASE HELP_ I do not want to take my ipod outside and drive over it with my car.*

  • Format Ipod

I wanted to clear all the junk off my Ipod. To achieve this, not only did I have to reset it to factory settings, but I also had to install new firmware as well.
    Why???
I guess it's just me, but I find iTunes incredibly difficult to understand. I ain't some computer newbie either. I'm a unix admin for a telecom company and I've been involved with computers in general since 1982.
I'm not even sure I understand why it's confusing, which makes it even more frustrating.
I went and grabbed a BBC podcast, and iTunes downloaded it. I'm fine with that. So now that it's downloaded, what does the "1" icon next to Podcasts mean? Did the Apple software engineer who wrote this think I would know what a reversed "1" icon would mean?
When I reset it to factory defaults, I told iTunes to automatically sync. Well, the BBC podcast doesn't appear to be on my ipod yet...
Under my ipod Device, something created a Music folder. Why? I didn't tell it to do that. Why did it do that? It wasn't there a few minutes ago!
Under podcasts Library, there's actually two rows for the BBC podcast. The first is "Best Of Natural History Radio" and the second says "NatHistory: World on the Move 26 Feb 08'. There's a little arrow at the right of the first line. What does that mean? There's a checkbox at the left of the second line. What does that mean? How am I supposed to know what little arrows and checkboxes signify???
Why are there two lines for a single program? Is one a category of some sort?
Anyway, these are just a few of the things about iTunes that I find incredibly confusing. I only use it to put podcasts on my ipod when I fly. Is it just me that finds this software horribly hard to understand?

if restoring doesn't work, put it back into disk mode and go into the equivalent my computer for mac, and format it through that.

  • Compilations on ipod classics

I have just getting a ipod classic but cant seam to be able to get compilations on it. I want one folder ie. top gear driving anthems then inside that i want cd 1 cd2 cd 3 but i cant get it to do that. My ipod touch does it. So need sum help. I tried doing playlists with folders inside each other and that dont work. When you pull the folder from itunes to ipod it puts all 3 cds together which i dont want. Tried doing them as solo folders and that dont work..

    ipod hater wrote:
Tried pulling album straight from library when done like this i get 1 cd in cover flow mode which is right but when i open the album theres just a list of all tracks not a break down like cd1/cd2 can this be changed.
No. On the iPod it is either one album with no disc divisions, or you need to give it three different album titles to split it up.
You can however create three separate playlists and access each disc from its playlist.
