IPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before used with iTunes
I just got iTunes 7 and when I plugged my iPod (5G, 60gig) into the computer it is recognized by Windows XP as a removable device as usual and also by iTunes as an iPod. However iTunes keeps displaying this message each time the iPod is connected:
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
I restore the iPod and it says it's updated and the player is ejected, but my iPod seems to be in disc mode, and when re-connected iTunes gives the same message. I looked around for solutions to this and the only thing I saw was that the drive may be improperly named, but I've double checked and am quite sure that's not the issue.
it sounds like you've already seen this document, Emma:
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore"
... a few preliminary questions (thinking they might help with trying to identify other possible causes of this).
what make and model is your PC? is it a desktop or a laptop?
if you plug the ipod in to a different PC (with itunes 7.0.x installed), do you get the same message from that itunes?

when i pluged my ipod classic 5g to PC then it shows “iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. you must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes”?then after restoring the PIOD when IPod restarted then Itunes again detect the same ERROR.
If you are using XP, and you went through the procedure at the bottom of the previously linked document to change the iPod's assigned drive letter, and you also tried putting it into Disk Mode...
If you have not already, try shutting down your computer and disconnecting all USB devices, including hub. Start up with only standard keyboard and mouse connected. Just to be safe, put the iPod into Disk Mode again

Run iTunes. Connect iPod to a direct USB port on computer. iTunes may prompt you about "recovery" and ask you to do a Restore. Try to do a Restore again. -

please help me what do i do?You have to restore the iPod, no ifs, ands, or buts...
After iOS is installed you will be asked if you what to set it up as a new iPod or if you want to restore from a backup.
If you have a good backup you can restore that and you're good to go.
If you don't have a good backup, then you end up with a "clean" iPod.... -

I'm having the same loop message appear when trying to sync my new Ipod Shuffle "Itunes has detected a device in recovery mode. You must restore this device before it can be used w/ Itunes".
I've restored several times but it keeps looping back to the same message. Turns out this message appeared with my last shuffle and I thought possibly the shuffle battery was depleted and it was time to get a new one.
any suggestions? If you restore from backup.
You should have made sure that everything was on your computer bef ore updating anyway. Did you fail to do that?
All pics taken with iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, most especially before any update/restore/etc. Did you fail to do that? -
I reboot the computer, deleted and restart itunes, change computer, change cable, check ping, check connection. need help

iTunes gives me the message that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode and that I need to restore the factory settings. When I click the "restore" button iTunes downloads the software. This is a 30 minute process. Once the download completes, I get the same message "iTunes detects an iPod in recovery mode....". I'm running Windows Vista and ZoneAlarm security software.
I've tried this restore function multiple times and still get the same results.
I've also tried resetting the iPod by holding the wake/sleep button and the Home button at the same time. The iPod turns on but shows the icons of a usb cable connecting to iTunes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This maybe yuor problem:

I was updating my daughters ipad last night to the latest operting system, when finished it came up with an error message, her ipad then went blank and came up with the picture to connect to itunes. But when I connect to itunes it comes up with the error message "itunes has detected an ipad in recovery mode. You must restore this ipad before it can be used with itunes" - can someone help with how I can do this
Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times. -

I had some new albums I bogut from Itunes and wanted to put them on my Ipod Touch. Went to do that, ITunes said there was an update. I downloaded the update and then I couldn't see anything in my Ipod nor listen to anything. The screen of my Ipod shows a USB cable pointing to Itunes and when I plug it into ITunes again I get the message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." And the ONLY option it gives me is to restore my IPod to factory settings. I looked online for answers but all I see are people having problems with this because they bricked their phone, which I haven't ever done or even know how to do. Would appreciate some help, planned on spending my day off listening to my new albums.
If you are in the USA you can redown
If the music is not in your iTunes library (it is not in the backup that iTunes makes), you can redownload it if you are in the USA.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Are you in the USA?

When I got on to itunes is didn't say " Itunes has delected an ipod recover mode. You must restore theis ipod before it can be used with itunes" How come?
Hi
After trying several times I had to give up with the restoration as it wasn't working. I made an appointment at my local Apple store and took the phone into them.
It turned out to be a hardware problem that they couldn't fix so I had to buy a replacement phone as I didn't buy the extended warranty when buying the original phone in 2010.
