Ipod Initialising In Car

New here so sorry if this is being asked in the wrong place.
My iPod Classic 30gb keeps losing it's connection in my car - i recently changed my car from a Ford to a VW so I know it's not the car....
The stereo says "ipod initialising" and then never reconnects. If i completely shut down and re-boot the ipod it then connects again. In my old car it was connected by a USB cable and in my new VW it is connected by a proper iPod MDI cable.
My iPod is actually full (well apart from about 0.1 gb) - and the problem has only started since it was full - does anyone think that's the problem?
Any thoughts/help would be appreciated - don't want to have to keep rebooting it every journey!

It is never a good idea to fill an iPod or any device that much. Try and remove some music and then see what happens.
The iPod needs room to write info such as playcounts and last played dates. It may not have enough space to do so.

Problems with iPhone 3G and iPod Touch with Car Stereos

There are three cars in our family, and every car as a stereo with built-in iPod interfaces. Car 1 has a Pioneer system, Car 2 has a Kenwood, and my car has an Alpine system. I can't hear any audio when I connect an iPod touch or iPhone 3G to the Kenwood and Pioneer systems. They can perform functions on the iPhone/iPod touch, such as change songs, randomize songs, repeat songs, etc, however, there is no audio. 80% of the time the Alpine does the same thing; 10% of the time an error is displayed on the head unit; and 10% the iPod Touch/iPhone works perfectly.
All three systems can operate my iPod Nano correctly without any problems at all. Because the same problem occurs to all the stereos and because the iPod Touch and iPhone are basically the same minus phone capabilities, I am beginning to believe that the problem is with them and not the stereo systems. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how can I fix it if it is fixable?

Which Touch (first or second generation) and which iPhone (2G or 3G)?
And what generation Nano are you testing with.
Your auto systems may not be compatible with the newer generation model iPods/Phones.

You may need to do a Restore in iTunes.
Clicking sounds from an iPod that has a hard drive is probably not a good thing. It is possible that your iPod's hard drive is becoming unreliable.

After using my iPod classic in my infinity G35 a few weeks ago, I took it out of the car and it no longer works. Just a white screen with the web address for Apple iPod support. Worked fine when hooked up to iPod jack in car. But wont work anywhere now

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

Ipod connected to car iPod ready deck

I have an iPod that is connected to my car iPod ready stereo. It is connected via an aftermarket product. My question is, is it ok to leave myiPod connected 24x7 in my car? Will it drain the battery faster? Will it damage my ipod?

It depends. On mine, when the car unit is turned on, the iPod battery receives a charge and does so whilst it's in use. When the car unit is turned off and I leave the iPod connected, it shuts down, so according to the manufacturer of my car head unit, it's ok to leave the iPod connected 27/7. Does yours do the same? You should check with the maker of your car unit.
However, I don't leave my iPod in the car 24/7 for other reasons, one of which is that I don't want it to be stolen. Also so it's not subject to temperature extremes.

If my car stereo has just got a front loading cd player does anyone know an adaptor - preferable in apple store - that i can use? The only ones i have seen use the tape player.

Direct connection via the dock connector or headphone jack of your iPod, to the mini-jack input (or AUX RCA input jacks) of your car stereo. Not many low/moderate-end cars have this feature yet, but it is becoming more popular. Some aftermarket auto stereo units may have this feature.
There are also some after-market, moderate to fairly expensive direct interfaces, that hook into your existing car stereo to provide a high-quality, direct connection. Most will also power/charge the iPod. Pretty slick, but can be pricey ($80-$300). If money is no object, a clean way to go. Not very portable from car to car if at all.

Connect your iPod to a cassette adaptor and play your tunes through your car's cassette player. Some new cars no longer come with a cassette player, so it may not be an option. It will provide even better audio quality if you can run the audio feed out of the dock connector (see the SendStation link below). Convenient, but wireless FM transmitter signals are susceptible to static and outside interference, and can vary in strength and quality depending on your location. Highly portable between cars, and may be used in a home system. FM transmitters that need to be plugged into a DC auto jack may not work in a home environment (without some sort of adaptor).

Whichever you choose, power the iPod through your cars DC power -- either from a power adapter, or as part of the combined audio adaptor. Have a method to secure the iPod to the dash/console/etc. See the reviews for all the various accessories at the iLounge

I have read positive and negative reviews of each method, and within method there are great variations in performance of different manufacture's systems and peoples opinions of their performance. Some cassette adaptors/FM transmitters work poorly, some better.
FWIW: I have the iTrip Mini & the Newer Technology RoadTrip!+ FM transmitters, a Belkin cassette adaptor (used both with & w/out the PocketDock) and two vehicles with the BlitzSafe direct interface. Using the same song in the same car, I found that the FM transmitters worked, but not as good as the cassette adapter via the headphone jack. Using the PocketDock on the cassette adapter resulted in a significant audio quality improvement. As expected, the Blitzsafe direct connect was exceptionally better than everything else: less tinny, a more warmer/richer sound, and close to true CD quality.

I have a 5th Generation iPod nano. I own a 2008 VW Eos which has a 30-pin dock. It functions but, my car's UI for iPod is nefastous. I wanted to know if there was a way to control the music within the iPod.

Not using the dock connection. That is for data, and your car audio system is "in charge" of playing the songs. However, if the car audio system has an auxiliary audio input that is a standard mini-stereo jack (looks like headphones jack), you can connect the iPod there using a commonly available cable, like this

Does playing my ipod on the car stereo with USB hurt the battery of the ipod?

Just curious if when playing the ipod on the car stereo using the usb plugged into the stereo unit will cause the battery life to shorten since it is seems to be charging the ipod. Or does the ipod have a regulator that stops the charging once the battery is full?

Thank you for the info. I must have gotten a bad ipod, because I only had it for a month and the battery would drain down overnight even with the wifi and bluetooth off. I play it on my stereo unit hooked up with the USB. I didn't think that by doing that it would mess up the battery and cause it to drain quickly in just a month.

Connecting my iPod to my car stereo

I am trying to find out the best way to connect my iPod to my car stereo. I know that there are lots of different ways. I have heard that if it is connected to a 3.5mm jack on the front of a car stereo and then into the headphone jack on the iPod it makes the sound quality inferior. I have seen USB ports on the front of stereo's and have also seen leads with ipod dock to 2 RCA leads which connect to the rear of the stereo, therefore making a more permanent fix. Which of these is best? I am happy to take the stereo out although i think that maybe it would be easier to buy a stereo with a front USB connector. Will this give good sound reproduction, and if so can i use the white usb lead which comes with iPods??? Please help.

Personally, I have an Alpine deck with an additional ipod adaptor which is hidden behind the dash and is accessable via the glovebox. The ipod adaptor is connected to the ipod through the dock connection enabling you to fully contral and access your ipod through the car stero while your ipod remains neatly tucked away (and hidden) in your glovebox. I believe they sell stereo head units that do not require and additional ipod adaptor... do a little research and I'm sure you can find something in your price range.
Also, to answer your first question, you shouldn't lose any sound qaulity if your car setup is done this way.

Powering an IPod in a car with FM transmitter

I'm going to buy a video IPod for Christmas and one of the new ITrip LCD's that hook onto the dock of the IPod to transmit over an FM frequency (the new ITrip LCD's have gotten pretty good reviews). However, since it plugs into the dock, that limits me to charging it with my car lighter. I was told there is a USB mini B on the ITrip that I could use for power but am not sure how. Does anyone know of an IPod accessory or combination of accessories that I can use to power/charge from a mini-B USB to a car lighter?
Also, should I also get a normal dock or charger for my home? I'll probably only use the Ipod in my car so I don't want to buy an expensive dock station.

What video inputs does the car DVD player have? You can (depending upon the model iPod you have) purchase video-out connectors that have VGA, component and composite out. Some movies, depending upon the source, may have DRM protection that prevent using the VGA out.

IPod Nano to Car Speakers

I have a white 2 GB iPod Nano 1st Generation and I want to be able to play my iPod through my car speakers. I already have the USB cable and the car charger, can i just plug the cable & the charger into my car and then turn off my radio and press play...or do i need to by one of those FM Radio iPod converters for a car in order for me to play my iPod in my car?

Either that or an expensive retrofit. My last car had a lousy radio so I bought a Sony that had an aux port. There are also some really expensive models that have iPod ports. Another option for some cars is an expensive device that adds an auxilliary input to your factory radio but there can be downsides. For me I have a choice of losing my XM radio or losing audible warnings. And then there's the FM transmitters. I bought a Kensington digital and am mostly happy with it. I say mostly because in some areas there is no free frequency so the iPod is unusable.
