IPod "is disconnecting" other removable drives when it is disconnected...

Hi All,
I have a number of external hard drives on my Win XP Pro PC, and when I connect, then add music (by syncing), and then finally disconnect the iPod (the standard way using iTunes), I have problems with other drives disconnecting at the same time when I pull the USB cable that is connected to the iPod. Essentially what I am saying in the rather tortured sentence above is that when I disconnect the USB for the iPod, some of the other drives shut down momentarily and then spin up again, at which time XP scans their contents and so on as if I had just connected them to the PC.
This is a bit alarming, as I am worried that I am going to prang the iPod or my external drives...
Any ideas?
Best,
Doc

I had an episode of a tv show series on my IPOD NANO 8GB. I just bought a new episode of the tv show and I went to put it on my IPOD NANO 8GB and it removed the first episode off my IPOD NANO 8GB. Now, all I have is the new episode of the tv show on my ipod and I can't get the other back on there. How do I get the other episode that I had on there first back on to my IPOD NANO 8GB with the new episode on my ipod?  Please Help Soon.

    Hello Lisa,
Double check your iPod's sync settings from under it's TV Shows tab in iTunes.  Make sure it is not set up to sync only unwatched episodes.

  • Windows detects shuffle as removable drive and i can't resto

    hey guys, need help.
my shuffle was working perfectly last night, but when i put it in my office pc, it detected it as a removable drive. when i tried to explore the disk using explorer, it said the there was an i/o error.
now i am at home and the same thing happens. and, when i try to restore it to factory settings using ipod updater software (latest), there is a "can't mount ipod" error. what's happening and what can i do to restore or fix it?

Are you using Version 1.1.2? The problem you describe sounds a lot like the problems posted here related to that Firmware version

  • Using iPod as an external hard drive while recording

I've found that using my older iPod photo as an external drive when recording seems to work really well for me. Has anyone else also experienced this?
Is this a good idea and can I run Reason 4 and other plug-ins from my iPod? If I do, should I daisy chain or use a PCMCIA Firewire card for it?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

It's not a good idea, iPod hard drives are not designed for sustained transfers like this and you will eventually kill it.
Given that external drives are so cheap, you are far better off getting a decently fast 7200rpm drive that is robust, rather than relying on the little 3600 drive (or whatever it is) in the iPod...

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux. Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux? So want to know how to get  the same done.
what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus. In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot, root, home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse, centos, fedora.
As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.

  • Ipod shuts down everyday using ITrip when driving

I have an 80gb Ipod Video Classic I am using in my car with a Griffith Itrip so I can play my Ipod through my FM radio.
This started happening a few weeks ago. About every 10 minutes or so when driving my Ipod will shut down saying I have to do a restore or it will say I have no battery power (after I just gave it a full charge). I have to reset it. It will stay frozen on the black and white apple screen.
I have tried upgrading my ITunes, updated the software on my Ipod, and have done two factory restores only for the problem to happen to me everyday when driving to work.
NOTE: this Only happens when I am connected to ITrip. I have no problems at all with my Ipod at any other time, only when driving and connected to ITrip. Anyone seen this or have any suggestions?

Do you have a wall power plug for your ipod? It sounds like it has run dead enough to where the usb ports arent giving the amount of power it needs to charge.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
Do other devices now have this problem?
Did the iPod stay connected before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Could be a loose antenna connectin

  • How to make external devices (like iPods, etc.) NOT mount as connected drives when plugged in via USB to a Mac?

If I plug my iPod (or a thumb drive or whatever) to my Mac's USB port, the device appears as a icon representing a connected drive on my Mac's Desktop.
    This is normal, expected behavior.
HOWEVER, in some cases, I'd prefer that the device not "mount" as a connected external drive.
With thumb drives or external USB drive, of course, I want them to "mount" so I can transfer files on or off them -- that would be the only possible reason to connect an external drive like that.
But with other Apple devices like iPods or iPhones, there are TWO possible reasons to connect them to a Mac: either to "sync" them or transfer files on/off them; OR, to simply recharge the device's battery. (Or, both sync and recharging functions at once.)
For those people who use their Apple devices in ways that require transferring files (i.e. most people), then having the device "mount" as a connected device is a desirable behavior.
But in my circumstance (and I bet there are a lot of people in a similar circumstance), I have no need or desire to transfer any data to or from my device every time I plug it into my Mac: I'm plugging it in SOLELY to recharge the device's battery.
Specifically, in my case, I have a 6th-gen iPod Nano, and I use it exclusively as an FM radio and a pedometer. I don't have any mp3s or songs or any other external files loaded on it, nor do I plan to add any in the future.
The only reason I ever plug it into my Mac is so that I can recharge the iPod's battery.
But the "problem," which is a minor one I admit but a problem nonetheless, is that every time I connect the iPod to the Mac, the iPod appears as a "connected drive" icon on my Mac's desktop. Which means that I'm not supposed to just unplug the iPod  when I'm done -- first, I have to find its icon on the Mac Desktop, and then drag the icon to the Trash, to "unmount" it -- and only then can I freely unplug the iPod without getting an error message telling me that I shouldn't just disconnect connected drives without first properly unmounting them.
This would be bothersome enough if I only had to do it once per connection, but in the case of the iPod Nano, there's no way to tell how recharged it is while it is in the act of recharging, so that to see if I'm "done," I have to unplug it, check the battery status, and if it's not fully charged, re-plug it back in. So that each time I recharge it, I often have to unmount the drive several times, depending on how impatient I am.
There has to be a way to prevent the mounting of the drives of devices that one is connecting simply for the purpose of recharging. But how?
Strangely, I also have an old iPhone, and when I plug that in for recharging in the same way, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the Desktop. I'm not sure how I managed to do this, but long ago I must have changed some setting or preference for this to happen. And by now I've forgotten what I did.
I'd prefer that I could change the "mount/don't-mount" setting on a device-by-device basis -- i.e. make it such that this particular iPod doesn't load, but perhaps a different iPod would load -- but if that's not possible, then is there a way to stop ALL iPods and iPhones from loading as connected drives when plugged in?
(I'm not talking about appearing as connected drives within iTunes -- I'm talking about appearing as an icon on the Desktop in the Finder.)
And please don't tell me to just buy a wall charger! I prefer to recharge off my computer if possible, using the charging cord that came with the iPod.
I presume there's some simple setting to toggle this on or off, but I haven't yet found it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I already know about that Finder Preferences option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Why not? Because I still need CDs and DVDs to appear on the Desktop and mount properly! If I uncheck the "CDs, DVDs and iPods" option, then I lose the ability to access CDs and DVDs, which creates a whole new problem for me. What I want is to not mount iPods only -- actually, what I really want is to not mount this particular iPod -- but if that level of specificity is not possible, then I want to exclude just iPods from mounting, without also condemning CDs and DVDs (or whatever) to invisibility.
Also, I was confused by the way the Preference is worded: It says "Show these items on the Desktop," with a series of options to check. But this phraseology seems to mean that the unchecked items will still "mount," they simply won't appear as Desktop icons. One would still have to "Eject" them using a menu command, rather than dragging the icon to the Trash -- right? Or am I mistaken, and is the Preference Pane simply badly worded, and when they say "Show these items on the Desktop," what they really mean is "mount these external devices as connected drives." So that if a category is unchecked, then they won't load as external drives at all?
But if so, then what purpose could possibly be served by inserting a CD or DVD that is not recognized by the computer? And if it isn't recognized, then it would seem that there would be no way to ever Eject the CD or DVD disk. Right?
Thus, if I uncheck that Finder Preference box you suggest, one of two outcomes will result:
-- Either CD, DVDs and iPods are still mounted, they just won't appear as icons on the Desktop; but they would still need to be Ejected via a menu command, which doesn't solve my problem.
-- Or, CDs, DVDs and iPods are not mounted or recognized by the computer at all, which means that if I insert a disk into the disk drive, it will get stuck there forever, since there's no way to Eject it, since the OS doesn't recognize that it's even there. Which is thereby a new problem.
Either way, I'd have a problem! Or...? Clarification, anyone?

  • Escrow the recovery key in DB server and not in AD when removable drive is encrypted.

Is there any way to escrow the recovery key in the database server and not in AD when removable drive (USB drive) is encrypted via manage-bde command line? The data recovery agent is not enabled in our organization.
"Choose how bitlocker protected removable Drives can be recovered" for removable drives is disabled in our Group policy also.
    Please advise. Thank you.

As far as I am concerned, you cannot do that when you are using the command line "Manage-bde".
The reason is because, the manage-bde command line parameters doesn't support saving recovery keys to databases. Also there is not any group policy defined for it.
I you want an option to save recovery keys in a database rather than the AD, I would recommend to use MBAM (Microsoft Bitlocker Administration and Monitoring).

  • External Hard Drive for Time Machine - 2 TB. Can I remove other external drives it was backing up?

I have an external drive dedicated for Time Machine, it's 2 TB. Last year I started backing up computer (500 GB) and one external hard drive that has 500 GB. IAlso, I have another external drive that is 1 TB connected to my computer. I noticed last week that I was hearing that other external drive sounding funny, so I thought I would add it to Time Machine to back up. Now today my Time Machine failed. I tested the drive or verified the drive and all was well. My thought is because I added this drive to Time Machine it failed because of not enough room? Is there a way to remove that other external hard drive and go back to just the computer and the 500 GB?
I did btw out of a panic mode buy the GDrive that has Thunderbolt with 3 TB, yet I can't use Thunderbolt because that plug is used for my monitor, bummer. But, maybe using this new external drive I can back up the 500, the computer and the 1TB. Any thoughts?

When you say the Time Machine failed, do you mean the drive containing the Time Machine backups failed, or what failed was trying to back up the new drive you added? If Time Machine was able to complete the first full backup of the new drive, then adding Time Machine didn't cause the problem, it was a coincidence. If Time Machine runs out of space it just starts deleting the oldest backup. I suppose it might fail on the first Time Machine run after the initial backup if it didn't have space to delete stuff. When you look at the Time Machine drive in the Finder, is it in fact full? If there's plenty of space left on it, it's not clear what the failure was about.
Also, testing and verifying with Disk Utility will spot some problems but not all.

Thunderbolt can be daisy-chained, so if it or other Thunderbolt devices have a pass-through port it might be possible to do all that. But it might be better to return the drive and get a USB 3 drive instead. It would be fast enough, cheaper, and more versatile. For a single hard drive (not a RAID or SSD), Thunderbolt is not really much faster than USB 3.

  • Synch removes songs when using external drive?

I use an external drive as my iTunes library. I have a bit more than 5,000 songs in the library. If I sync (to charge, get photos from the phone, or sync on a podcast) without the external drive plugged in iTunes removes about a thousand songs from the phone, as far as I can tell it is the same group of songs each time. Then when I sync WITH the drive in place, it replaces those songs. Why are those songs different from the others which stay in place? Is it a setting, some peculiarity about the file types? What can I change to keep all songs synced?

Your iPhone is attempting to sync with your iTunes Library every time you plug it in and iTunes cannot find the songs on the external drive when it is unplugged, so it assumes they have been deleted. You should be able to select "Manually Manage Music" and make it so that your iPhone does not automatically sync music every time. By doing this, however, you will need to manually drag songs to your iPhone when you want to add new ones.

  • Device removal error when flash drive is plugged in

I have a 1GB flash drive that I have used for a while with my Windows XP desktop. I switched from a PC laptop to a Mac Book Pro running Leopard. But the Mac Book gave me the drive removal error when I tried to use the flash drive. The PC desktop worked with the drive just fine. So I backed up the flash drive and reformatted it in FAT32. Then I reloaded the files. For a short while I had no problem with the Mac Book. Now I am getting removal errors again. I have been careful not the remove the drive, either from the PC or or the Mac Book, without going through proper procedures. It does no good to "repair" the drive from the Mac Book. Any suggestions?

My guess is, your iPod classic is more than 2 years old and out of warranty, and the hardisk has gone kaput! and need to be replaced.
