IPod is locked. Unable to reset or restore

I have tried every known way to get my 3rd Gen 64GB iPod Touch to reset or restore. I cannot get past the Apple symbol. Short of mailing it to Apple is there anything else I can try. It was purchased in Dec. 2009 so I am still within my 1-year warranty. I have recharged and discharged, etc.

The same thing happened to my son's IPOD touch after screen cleared. He also has a password, which we can't get to/enter because we can't get that far. It won't reset, it's fully charged, but right now .... is simply a paperweight. Any suggestions?

  • Ipod: Unable to reset or restore

My Ipod (click wheel) will not reset or restore. The apple logo appears on the Ipod screen, followed by the file with an exclamation point. I have tried to use Ipod updater without success. The Ipod does not register that it is charging either when plugged into the power adapter or the Mac using the USB cable. The Ipod is not recognized by Itunes either. After the latest attempt to reset and restore, the Ipod made whizzing noises like it was attempting to continuously restart. It finally stopped. The Ipod is more than a year old and out of warrantee. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I was having a similar problem with my Click Wheel iPod. It would reset when plugged into the wall, but would not restore. It kept causing both My Computer and Updater 11-27-2005 to crash. I assumed the problem was with iTunes 6, which I recently downloaded, but I took my iPod to a Mac Store anyway to see if they could do anything with it at the Genius Bar. The guy behind the bar was very helpful; he restored my iPod in about 2 minutes, I took it home, re-imported all my music, and it's been fine ever since.
My iPod is about 1.5 years old, and although I purchased the iPod AppleCare extended service plan, the Genius Bar guy didn't ask me anything about my iPod's warranty status. Didn't ask to see a receipt or anything. He just helped me out and sent me on my way. So I'd suggest taking your iPod in and seeing if they can restore it for you. You may find that being out of warranty isn't an obstacle. It's worth a shot.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to reset or restore ipod nano

Hi, Haven't synced my ipod for over a year and today I connected my nano to my laptop, pressed sync and got a message to say files are corrupted. Looked at ipod and it was syncing however it’s actually wiped all files from the ipod. They're still in iTunes. I thinks it's something to do with ipod using file system FAT32. It seems the ipod wants to use that and it can't because it says another program is using it. It won't let me select another file system option, as it says they are in use too. I do have Mini Tool Partition Wizard on my laptop and don't want to uninstall it but I need to sync my ipod. Can anyone advise, please? thanks. (It may be nothing to do with mini tool as I've only used this to root my Sony Xperia smartphone).

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that you're unable to restore your iPod nano.  For more information on this issue and how to troubleshoot it, please follow the article below.

  • HT201303 Unable to reset or restore iPad

This problem has two stages, outlined below:
I can't restore or reset my iPad because > it requires my password
I can't enter the correct password because > it's asking for the password associated with my old email address (old Apple ID) and neither the old ID's password nor my current password are recognized
All the online help topics redirect me in endless loops that don't address this particular issue except to say that I can unregister all my other tech, change back to my old Apple ID, reset the iPad, then change back to my new Apple ID and reregister all my other tech. That's like saying, yeah I can fix this one thing by breaking all this other stuff. Shenanigans.
    Does anyone know:
    A) How to resolve this issue without resetting my Apple ID to the old email address, thus screwing up all my other tech?
    B) An email address or contact form or Apple Support? (I've used email support before but can no longer find this info on the website)
This is the second time I've encountered a "you need your old username to access something" problem. Last time was with iTunes purchases on my desktop and Apple Support had to manually reset things. This is getting tiresome.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    For bonus points:
    C) If I give up on this ridiculous situation, and want to sell this iPad and buy a KindleFire or Android device, how the heck could another person ever use it?

I think I know what your problem is. Your battery is low our better yet its dead I beleive you will have to go to your local apple store. our order a new battery. cause i had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. My ipod would come up with the sad sign. When I tried to restore it, it would work for a little while but go back to freezing up and sad face. So I took it to the apple store were I live. They said well your battery has given out and had to get it replace. But it was all good since i had a warrenty. So get your ipod check out I bet thats what it is

  • TS1382 Ipod is locked and wont reset!

My ipod says it's locked and is now frozen up. It wont reset or anything. Please help!

Did you check the iPod's Hold switch, to make sure it is not ON?
If that's not problem, make sure you do a Reset as shown here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
The nano has a small clickwheel (assuming this is not 6G); when you press the center button for a Reset, make sure your finger is not touching any part of the "wheel" around the button.

  • Please help - ipod mini frozen - can't reset or restore!

I saw several posts on this topic, and followed the advice given. I've tried to reset the ipod by toggling the hold switch and then holding down the menu and select button at the same time (at least 20x's, and being careful to only hold down the correct buttons). Not having luck with resetting, I tried to do a restore, however when I start to run the ipod updater, and it asks me to connect the ipod, the updater doesn't recognize it.
It's frozen in the pause position at the start of a song and nothing I do helps! Although it's still under warranty I really don't want to have to send it in to apple, so I sure hope someone can help me.

  • What do I do when my iPod classic locks up

What do I do when my iPod classic locks up?

    Reset the iPod.
To do this, turn the Hold switch on, then off again and press-and-hold both the Menu and the Select (centre) buttons together for at least ten seconds. You may need to try this a couple of times for it to work.
If it still doesn't fix it, try the 5Rs procedure, which is explained in the following article; http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/

  • I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked.

I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked. I had been having trouble syncing music, When I tried to sync, iTunes said it didn't recognize my iPod, even though I was on the iPod page in iTunes which showed the model number and the serial number of my iPod

I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?
