IPod is not recognized by computer firewire only says "ok to disconnect"

I use firewire/windows XP. the ipod used to work, but now does not. I did the little tricky restore where you hold down the buttons and all....and it is supposed to say do not disconnect, but whenever I plug in the ipod 2G classic with the touch wheel....it just says "OK TO DISCONNECT."
This is very unnerving considering the time it takes to get an answer plus I see that there are many people with the same question....it has to be something simple, right?? or does it have to do with the new version of iTunes....or do I need to reinstall iTunes and erase the iPod? I am afraid of erasing the iPOD for fear of not being able to load anything back onto the iPOD....
what gives??? anyone know? I saw the links to the USB question under Manage USB devices, but I use the FIREWIRE cable...
thanks

This is my iPOD
iPod (touch wheel)
All iPod (touch wheel) models have a FireWire port cover. Scroll wheel models don't, and dock connector models don't have a FireWire port. The iPod (touch wheel) model controls look similar to the iPod (scroll wheel) but the touch wheel itself does not turn. iPod (touch wheel) models are considered second generation iPod models. The top of an iPod (touch wheel) model is shown here:
I went into the link and looked at the 5 R's. Nothing there. I couldn't restore the iPod if I wanted considering I would need to connect my iPod to the Computer which I cannot do.
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - did not work - I tried the click wheel instructions, but it did nothing at all....it was totally unresponsive. then I went and did the *If you have an older iPod model without a Click Wheel* instructions get to the fourth step where it says
*When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.*
but the Disk Mode screen does not appear. It goes straight to ""ok to disconnect"
Is there something else going on or something trivial that I could be doing that could be messing up these instructions?

    Hello Amber,
I would be concerned too if my iPod was not recognized by iTunes.  I found a couple of articles that might help with this.
If you don't see your iPod in the My Computer or Computer section of Windows, follow the steps in this article:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
If Windows recognizes your iPod but iTunes does not, follow the steps in this article:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

  • TS1496 ipod shuffle not recognized in computer itunes or device manager

not recognized in comp, i tunes or device manager.....HELP!!!!

I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THAT I JUST BOUGHT MY 30GB IPOD VIDEO ABOUT 4 HOURS AGO, SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN REALLY STRUGGLING TO INSTALL IT. A SOON AS I GOT IT, I DID EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID, I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM/IPOD/START AND DOWNLOADED THE NEWEST ITUNES VERSION. THEN I PLUGGED IN MY IPOD TO MY COMPUTER, AND ALL THAT HAPPENS IS A LITTLE BUBBLE OPENS UP AND SAYS "FOUND NEW HARDWARE" WHEN I CLICK THAT, IT OPENS UP, AND I CLICK "INSTALL THE SOFTWARE AUTOMATICALLY" WHERE IT SAYS IT, THEN I CLICK NEXT AND WAIT. AFTER, IT SAYS "THE HARDWARE WAS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE THE WIZARD CANNOT FIND THE NECESARRY SOFTWARE".AFTER I WENT TO WWW.APPLE.COM TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, I'VE LOOKED THROUGH AND READ EVERY ARTICLE THAT CAN PERTAIN TO MY SITUTAION, BUT NONE HAVE HELPED ME I AM DISPLEASED TO SAY, THE LAST ARTICLE I READ WAS THIS ONE:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
BUT EVEN THAT DOES NOT HELP ME BECAUSE WHEN I GET TO STEP 8 WHICH SAYS "Locate the iPod in this list. In some cases one of the entries will have "iPod" in its name. If no such entries are present, the iPod is most likely represented by "USB Mass Storage Device." I LOOK FOR WHERE IT SAYS "IPOD" OR "USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE" UNDER "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS, AND CANNOT FIND EITHER THING..I HAVE RESTARTED MY COMPUTER A NUMBER OF TIMES, I HAVE EVEN UNISTALLED ITUNES THEN REINSTALLED IT I HAVE STRETCHED EVERY OPTION AND NOTHING HAS WORKED..CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME??..I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR 4 HOURS STRAIGHT STOPPING ONLY TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AND GRAB A BITE TO EAT..

Hi, so for a few months I've been having a problem with my iPod Touch 4th gen where when i connect the ipod to the computer it does not connect. My Computer says "USB device not recognized" and also I've recognized that my ipod doesnt charge either. When I connect it to a wall charger the ipod charges fine, but i can't sync anything or any music. I have no idea how to fix this problem :\

  • Ipod Shuffle not recognized by computer and iTunes and does not charge

I connected my iPod to my computer but for some reason, it is not recognized at all by the computer nor iTunes. It doesn't charge either. I have tried all the USB ports and since I have Windows Vista, I cannot use the Restore Utility thingy. I purchased my iPod about 2 years ago so a warranty replacement is out of the question. Since any choices have been kicked off, can anyone find a solution to my problem? TYVM pl0x

  • IPod touch Not recognized by Computer but charges?

    Hey all
Want to ask you to help me.
My iPod touch 4th generation is not recognized by the computer, when I plug it in, nothing happens. I got my working iPod touch 4th generation and plugged it in to the computer and the computer made that ding sound and itunes recognized it.
It is not the computer problem in this case. I just restored another 4th gen iPod Touch last night and it connected and everyrthing so this is a problem wirth te unit itself.
If this helps any, the screen was proffesionally replaced. (not by Apple)
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I checked the dock connector and the corners of it are worn to a tiny copper wire on the left side but it's not sticking out. My other 3 iPod touches 4th gens have the identical thing, 2 have it worse in fact, yet, they connect to the computer fine. It is a problem with the iPod itself...
I bought the iPod like this after the screen was replaced from eBay.  It was like this before the screen was replaced anyways.
    Any other ideas?

  • Ipod nano not recognized by computer, driver issues

    Hello All!
I have an ipod nano, first gen, that works just great. Bought another one off of ebay for my husband for Christmas. It looks identical to the one that works - model numbers & year the same - HOWEVER, it is not recognized by iTunes.
I followed an older thread on this forum and followed the directions to download usbstor.sys & usbstor.inf and move to my i368 folder but I still got the same message - something like "Windows highly recommends not installing these drivers because they have not passed logo testing. This could result in serious damage to your computer."
Does anyone know what is the issue? Can it be solved another way? Why does my other nano work? Does anyone know if it is safe to the install usbstor drivers? Help please

    Is this any help?
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
There's also this: iTunes 7 or later doesn't recognize the iPod.

  • Ipod touch not recognized on computer

My computer does not recognize my ipodtouch.  I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, but the computer does not show the ipod.  I tried to follow suggestions and find the apple usb driver, but it does not seem to have updated the driver.  (The driver is located on the C drive, but the date is not from today's update... it is an older driver and does not open, it asked Open With... )  ERRRR, I'm disappointed that the Ipod Touch was working, and now it's not charging or recognized on the computer.
