IPod is not recognized by my computer, but it will charge

I looked through the forums but everyone seems to have trouble connecting their iPod AND charging it. I can plug mine into my iMac and it starts charging, but it does not show up as a disk or in iTunes. This is a brand new iPod (my last one iPod's HD died). The only thing I can think is that maybe it is the firewire cord, because someone said different pins are used for charging and transferring data. I've tried all the steps that Apple says, but I can't restore obviously.
Any help out there?

As mentioned in this article, reinstalling iTunes will not delete your music and apps, but backing up is always a good idea.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. I realize this question is six months old, but just in case this helps someone. My PC suddenly decided not to recognize my IPod. I jumped through all the hoops for 24 hours trying all the suggestions and then just sat and took inventory of everything notable that was different from the last time I had synched it (a year earlier). I'd finally freed myself of Norton and installed Avast and several sites mentioned that as a possibility but no. In the end it was the new HP Officejet Pro 8600 software. I did a custom install and opted for the USB rather than wireless hookup. First off it took my old Canon scanner hostage and choked it into retirement. Then it started fondling Photoshop and searching for images in every file it could access. But the best trick was that it will just not let you synch your IPod for love nor money. Now I am a dinosaur and still use XP but I'm pretty sure the same thing happens with Windows 7. Fortunately, the fix is easy enough ***doink***, yank the printer's USB cable out of your PC and everything is fine.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Ipod Nano not recognized on my computer

My iPod Nano doesn't show up on My Computer or in the ITunes store under devices.
A popup recommends reconnecting the device but it does not help. It then says to uninstall and reinstall Itunes.
This device used to be recognized on a different pc but we changed out pcs. Is a Nano only supposed to be recognized on only one Pc?

> Uninstall & Reinstall iTunes - Windows XP | Windows Vista or 7 | Mac OS X
> Reset iPod (will not delete everything)
> Go to My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista or 7) and see if iDevice shows
> Restore iPod (will delete everything)
> Make sure iTunes and/or iOS firmware is up to date

IPod Touch - not recognized on my com but works on others

I am so stumped... I plugged my iPod Touch (1st gen) into my computer as I always do and it didn't pop up in iTunes. I checked my computer (windows 7 - 32bit) and it wasn't showing up there either. Totally out of the blue, nothing changed, it just suddenly wasn't being recognized. I tried plugging in my shuffle, same thing. I was able to reformat my shuffle though through another computer and it is now working on my computer again. For whatever reason though I can't fix my touch!
I have done everything the apple support has suggested. When I started the ipod in safe mode it did pop up in my itunes but when I tried to reformat it I got an error that said I couldn't reformat it. So I unplugged it and plugged it into my boyfriends computer. It popped up in iTunes and was able to be reformatted. So the whole iPod has been reset but it STILL won't show up in my iTunes or My Computer. I just don't understand how it could be recognized on one computer but not on another, especially when I have another ipod (shuffle) that does connect.
Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this?

Pay particular attentions to the section on the Apple Mobile Device service. That is what the computer uses to see iOS devices like the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. The other iPods like the Shuffle use differend means.

i have an ipod mini and itunes on my windows xp computer. i just bought the new ipod video that it is not recognized by my computer at all. i plug it in and the entire computer freezes. if i plug in my mini everything works fine.
i have tried updating/uninstalling my new ipod video. i am worried that if i uninstall itunes that i will lose my purchased music.

I assume you have installed the iPod driver, before connecting the 5G iPod. It is possible the device driver for the mini is different, and thus confusing your computer. The iPod driver is on the CD that came with your 5G iPod (iPod with Video)
