IPod is not recognized by Updater or by Windows

So far I've:
1. Followed the Five R's.
2. Restarted my computer
3. Tried to use the updater - but it does not recognize my iPod.
4. Tried to use Computer Management (Windows) to reformat my iPod, but it doesn't locate the iPod.
5. Tried an alternate USB port.
Any help would seriously, seriously be appreciated. I have an fifth gen iPod.

Unfortunately, after following all relevant steps my iPod still has the sad icon. If I charge the iPod using AC power only, I get a strange version of the powering icon where only one bar lights up and it doesn't appear to charge.

  • IPod is not recognized by updates

I have Version 1.3 and updated my ITunes and my iPod and each time I try to update it says please connect the iPod..welll I am connected. Even trying to put songs in from my ITunes it says no iPod recognized.
Also the Apple logo stopped appearing a long time ago. I have changed ports and I cant even restore it nor do any of the 5 R's.
Any ideas?....thanks so much if anyone can help.

      Windows XP

Well it shows charged and my songs are there and I tried to add some but nothing happened. I thought well maybe it needed an update on both Itunes and iPod, since it is a year old, so I did the updates and went to install the iPod one and I got the right screen on pc to do the update, but after the initializing it said please connect your iPod....well it is connected.
Then I figured well maybe it needs a complete restore but I cant do that either as the iPod does not seem to be responding. Maybe I am doing that wrong but looks like the iPod itself has some issue. I dont mind restoring it as I have all my songs on my second drive so thats not a problem.
Thanks so much for your help I do appreciate it.

  • IPod is not recognized in ITunes after upgrade to 7.3.1

Please help. I upgraded ITunes to the 7.3.1 version and now my IPod is not recognized in my ITunes. The USB port is working since my IPod recharged when I plugged it into the computer. I uninstalled & then reinstalled ITunes, but, my IPod is still not recognized by ITunes or my computer. I cannot find it listed in "my computer" files.
Any suggestions as to what happened? Thanks.

Your post solved the same problem for me. Thank you so much! And thanks to JaketheSnake for starting this thread. iTunes used to start up automatically whenever I connected my iPod Touch, but a couple of months ago it quit doing that. I didn't think much of it as I just clicked on iTunes in the dock and opened it and went on my merry way. I just figured something in the last iTunes update changed it's behavior. But lately I noticed that my iPod Touch would be in the source list while it was syncing and then it would sometimes just disappear. I was too lazy to start a thread, I guess, because I just thought someone would tell me to "restore" my iPT and I had gotten used to my little "work arounds". But now it's fixed, thanks to both of you.

  • My ipod is not recognized by itunes. Menus missing in itunes.

After I updated my ipod and my itunes, now the ipod is not recognized in itunes.  I went through all the recommended steps; starting and stopping various programs on my control panel, turning ipod on and off, checking cables - everything short of standing on my head.  In the process of all that,  I realized that the menu/task bar on the upper left side of the itunes page was gone. It wasn't there when I started this odyssey and it still isn't there..  I uninstalled and installed itunes again. I have Windows 8. Still no menu and still not recognizing the ipod. My ipod is 32gb touch screen.  Probably 3 years old or so. Was working fine before the updates......
    Thanks!!!

    Hi All,
I tried to download the update and iTunes doesn't work at all! It won't even open. I have tried all of the steps above but still no joy.
Any help would be much appreciated as I have been on this for one week already.
Close to my wits end and moving back to a Sony and trying Android for the very first time.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Ipod not recognized in Itunes or in windows.

I've been able to unfreeze my Ipod and restore and update the software using my laptop. However, my desktop, still does not recognize my IPOD nor does ITUNES on my desktop. I've read and followed the directions for what to do when this happens. Still it has not made a difference. Both of these computers use Windows XP and so I am baffled by the fact that my laptop worked easily and the other (my desktop) won't work with my IPOD at all. My music library is on my desktop and I'm disappointed that I can't access this.
    Suggetions or explanations?

    Hi Karen,
It's a bit unusual that a laptop would be recognizing an iPod better than a desktop (usually, it's vice versa).
That indicates that this might be a USB connection issue.
Are you sure that your computer's USB drivers are up-to-date? If they are already updated, then you may need to reinstall those drivers.
See this Knowledge Base article for details on that:
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date
Also, if that doesn't help, have you tried all of the suggestions here?:

    Hello,
The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...
<a href="How to put your iPod into disk mode</a>
Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?
Have you checked this link out?:

    here's a bit here's what microsotft says:
To resolve this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E325 11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    4. Locate and then click the LowerFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10 318}
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    6. Exit Registry Editor.
    7. Restart the computer.
my computer would crash, sometimes it'd just sync a couple random songs, sometimes i'd get error -50, somtimes a different message that said the disk could not be read or written to.....
it worked perfectly for me!make sure to follow the directions. it's easy and resolves many Windows XP problems related to ipods. for more info try microsoft help and support and just serch for ipod. it list a bit more info there. it doesn't say anything about reinstalling the apple software, but just to be thorough i unistalled itunes and quicktime before anything just to start with a clean slate, then reinstalled them from my ipod disk after the restart. then i downloaded all the updates from apple. my ipod has never worked better. good luck. theres no link to the page just search for ipod in windows help and support for exact text...

  • Ipod will not restore or update

My friend came over with her Nano and used it on my computer. When I plugged in my Ipod 80G classic into my computer, it said that it could no longer read the contents of the Ipod and to restore it. However, when I click "ok," it automatically disconnects my Ipod and I cannot get it to restore. I keep getting the message, "cannot read the ipod error 1436." It has erased all of my music off of the Ipod. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, have updated the drivers, with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

my ipod is not recognized by my itunes and tells me to uninstall itunes and reinstall it.  will this erase all of my music?

    Hi braddyloopy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes,  your music files should not be erased or affected in any way. It is always a good idea to back up your data before making any changes to your computer, though.
If you'd like to locate your music, this article explains how to find the files:

When you reinstall iTunes, I'd recommend using the method in this article to make sure it's reinstalled completely:
