Ipod is on the desktop but not in iTunes

I connect my ipod to my computer and it shows up on the desktop, but I can't download music I've bought from iTunes to my ipod. What do I do?

Any help here?

  • 3G iPod Shows up on Desktop but not in iTunes

I am having the same problem with my 3G iPod. It has been working flawlessly for many years but I tried to mount it and update my songs and it will show up on the desktop but not in iTunes. It does show up in the system profiler. I reset the iPod via the updater and keypresses. I trashed the plist files for the iPod and iTunes. Still nothing. I switched my firewire cables to different ports. Nothing.
What was strange was that Yami-pod does not see it as an iPod either so it is not just iTunes.
My iPod shuffle works just fine and mounts right away in iTunes.
This is on my eMac where I store my music. I have not tested it yet with the Macbook.

I tried hooking the iPod to the MacBook and it worked like a charm. I then moved the iPod back to the eMac and I still had the same problem. At my whits end I decided to zap the PRAM with the Command-Option-P-R trick and to my surprise the iPod launched iTunes and started syncing when I restarted the eMac.
I had no reason to think that there could be a problem with the PRAM as I did not have any other problems but it does seem to have been the problem.

  • IPod Mini is on the desktop, but not in iTunes

I know a variation of this question has been asked a zillion times, but for some reason I can't seem to find the answer. Anyway, I'm a recent switcher to Mac and used my mini for years on the PC, but when I hooked up the mini to my new iMac it only shows up on the desktop, not in iTunes. However, when I plug it into the USB port it actually opens iTunes, but just doesn't show up. Anyway, I saw some other posts about running a restore via iPod Updater in the Utilities folder, however, there's no iPod updater in my utilities folder. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • IPod Nano shows on desktop, but not in iTunes

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. I unmounted it and connected it again. each time I do that, it tells me it's detected a software update, but when I check, the dialog box tells me it's current.
    any help, please?

  • IPod Classic mounts on Desktop but not in iTunes

I have tried everything I can find on these discussion boards and Apple support documents but to no avail. Finally I put the iPod into firmware update mode and did a complete restore. That did the trick. Now I come to sync it in iTunes again and the same problem is back. I cannot be resetting the iPod every time, plus I am losing my iPod play counts. What gives? I am using the latest version of iTunes 12, Yosemite, MacBook Pro.

OK not a helpfully put question, I know. I solved the issue (I hope!!) by deleting all the contents of my iTunes>Music folder except for the Media (having first copied it all to the desktop). I relaunched iTunes and iPod was recognised. Then put the current library file back and everything is fine - for now anyway.

  • Ipod nano mounts on desktop but not in itunes

A brand new ipod nano 4gb, ordered from the online Apple store & a christmas present to my wife, mounts on her powerbook G4 osx 10.3.9, but not in itunes 6.0.1. The latest ipod updater 05-11-17 is installed. I have restored the nano, removed iPodDriver.kext and downloaded and re-installed 10.3.9. Everything seems to work on my G5 which I used to restore the nano using ipod updater 05-11-17.
What can I try next short of contacting Apple for a new ipod nano?
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 15" silver powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB DDR SDRAM

OK, I restarted the powerbook with the ipod plugged into the computer. Previously I had been plugging the iPod into an active computer. And lo and behold it is now recognized by iTunes. I'm not marking the Question as answered, because it may not work next time.

Certain models of single processor Power Macintosh G5 computers may show iPod nano mounted in the Finder but not recognized in iTunes. If this happens to you, try restarting your computer and Setting Energy Saver to highest performance and turn off hard disk sleep. If you have an iPod nano, but don't have a G5, then follow the other steps below.
The other steps all seem to deal with earlier versions of OS X. You are using 10.5? (your system info changed from your first post to your last post, dropping the 10.5 info).

  • IPod is seen on the desktop but not in iTunes

I have a 20gig standard iPod that I purchased a year ago, and a few days ago all of the songs on it just dissappeared and it is no longer recognized in iTunes. But it does show up on the desktop and I can few files I have saved on it. Is there a way to fix this?

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O”, or something similar.
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Also try this (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.

  • IPod connects to the computer, but not to iTunes

When I connect my 30 gb iPod to the computer, the "do not disconnect" screen appears on the iPod, but it does not show up on a Source list on iTunes nor does it update. The iPod does appear in the Finder, so I know the connection is made. I have OSX 10.4.11 and just updated to iTunes 8, but this problem occurred prior to the update (I was hoping the update would solve the problem!). What to do???

Yep add me to that list too, and I have tried the menu and select button on the ipod all that happens is the contrast goes very faint, tried the combo thing and it tells me it can't be installed on this computer, tried the 5 R's on the ipod frequent question page, all do nothing, totally un impressed with Apple for the first time, never had any problems but version 8 of itunes really needs bugging out before it was released, if anyone has any other ideas please do add them as I have just bought a whole load of music which is sat on my library and cant move to ipod...oh and I have also tried the create a new account and see if that works, well I could see the ipod but couldnt transfer the contents back to itunes - sooooooo unhappy can't do apple care as classic ipod is way past 2 years

  • IPod recognized on desktop, but not in iTunes...

I have an iPod click wheel and when I connect it, it's showing up on the desktop but not in iTunes. I have changed wires and ports and restarted...any thoughts?

Yes, that doesn't see to be the problem.
My iPod has reset itself now, wiping out all the music, and still it isn't showing up in iTunes. When I plug it in, it shows up on the desktop and opens iTunes, but does not update.

  • My ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes 7.

Let me start out by saying I've never had any itunes + ipod probems before. Everything has run smoothly up until now.
Last week I upgraded my OS to 10.4.7 because I had been running on 10.2.8 since 2001 and itunes wouldn't let me download albums containing music videos. So I decided it was time for the upgrade. I also upgraded to itunes 7 and had been previously using itunes 6. This is when the problems started. Now whenever I plug my ipod into my computer with my firewire cord, my ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes and I am completely clueless on what to do. No error messages pop up or anything. My ipod charges and that's about it. I tried doing the 5 R's, but none of that helps. I have a feeling it's itunes's problem and not my ipod's. I was thinking that maybe if I uninstall itunes 7 and re-install 6, everyting would work again; but I don't know how to uninstall itunes and I don't want to risk losing my library. I'd just like for itunes 7 to recognise my ipod and update it. Can anyone help me?

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.

  • IPod Classic 80GB shows on desktop but not in iTunes, so will not sync

My work Mac has just been upgraded to 10.5.8, and with it iTunes to 10.1. Now, when I connect my iPod, it appears on the desktop but not in the iTunes panel. As such, it won't sync any new content.
There is no problem with the cable, as the iPod charges while connected. I've tried resetting the iPod about a dozen times, which has no effect (once in a while the iPod says it is synchronizing, but this only lasts a few seconds and then disappears). Is there anything else I should try before I take the big step of formatting the iPod? I'm reluctant to do this because at the moment I at least have an iPod full of music - if I format and it still won't sync, I'll have a useless empty black box! Is it possible to go back to the previous version of iTunes which was syncing fine?
