Ipod is too loud

Hi,
i've problems with my ears and for me the ipod is even on the lowest volume setting too loud. Is there a way to set it to an even lower volume?
Thank you!

Just for curiosity, is there anyone else who tinks
the ipod is too loud? e.g. when listening to audio
books at night?
Yes, me! Despite a different hearing problem (partial DEAFness), I still find the lowest volume setting too high when the surroundings are very quiet (e.g. at night).
Of course, you may not read this as it's so long since you posted the question...

  • Ipod playing too loud?

Hi there, JOSH!!! Oooooooohhhhhhhhh! Anyway, I've been having some problems with my ipod nano (4th gen) recently and I'm wondering if ya'll could help me out, if you'd kindly :3
Firstly the ipod is playing too loud, way too loud. Now this is not just your typical loudness, this is.... Advananced loudness.... To the point that the song becomes barely listenable.. Ok, to give you an example, let's say I'm listening to "POWER" by Kanye West. When the drums and the 'beat' come in at about 0:25 it just sounds like grabbled static, really loud, grabbled static. :/
And I've no idea what's going on.. At first I thought that the bass and treble in the equalizer was too high, but it turned out the equalizer wasn't even on :S Then I tried restoring it to factory settings (Several times), but that didn't work either. And 'then' I thought it might just be the headphones, but that was a dead end too! :O Now I'm left wondering, just what the **** is going on :/ Anyone have any ideas on this? (P.S Volume limit was never used)
Secondly it runs out of battery, like that *Clicks fingers* I think after 45 minutes it's already out of juice. :/ Though I believe that this might be due to the 'loud' problem, it could be something else ...
Thirdly it keeps 'crashing' and it's not just a 'hold down ya menu and play button and it'sa better' crash. It's a 'Restore to factory and resync your whole ****ing libeary everytime' crash :/
It's only recently started doing this. About the time itunes was last updated.. I synced up and poof ipod starts acting funny :S
So can anybody find me!!! Somebody tohelpmefixmyipod?
As a note my Nano magically recovered from being dropped in water about a year. However it's been working just fine and dandy for about 5-6 months now.

Try verifying that you do not have optional volume adjustment cranked up.
While in iTunes, get info on a track that is having this issue.  Go to the options tab and at the top there is a "Volume Adjustment" setting. It should be set to "None". If it is set to +100%, that is your problem.
To fix, all of them at once, you can select all in your music library, then right click and select "Get Info" it will ask if you want to change multiple files at once, say yes. Then go to the options tab and set it to None and it will put that on all your tracks.
click ok, resync your music and see if that does it.

Thank you both for your great answers. I tried both your suggestions. They seem to work for some of the items, but not all - very weird.

  • Volume on iPod Too Loud But Unable to Lower

On my iPod, the volume is turned all the way down, but it still plays too loud. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks for any help.

There is a chance that the iPod is a European model, which has a much lower maximum volume compared to the US models.  Just a thought though.

  • The volume on my iPod was fine, but now it's too loud and I don't know how to turn it down.

The volume on my iPod was just fine, but somehow it got turned up too loud, and I don't know how to turn it down.

    Hi Virginia1945,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Depending on which iPod nano model you have, you can adjust the volume with the button on the side, the top, or using the click wheel. You may also be able to set a maximum volume, so it doesn't get turned up too loud in the future.
You can find the user guides for your iPod nano at this link:

And why is the crappy supermarket mp3 player louder then my Ipod Classic then???
I don't know, you tell us!
I also use an extra AKG headphone with a low impedance which fits the Ipods output, otherwise it would even be more silent.
I have an old pair of AKG K340 headphones and I use a Cmoy "altoids" amp to drive them from the iPod.
I compared also with my old 5.5 Video Ipod and with the volume cap enabled (i can also uncap it of course :-)) it is 5dB louder then the classic.
I believe it is a known fact that the 5th gen iPod can be hacked, the Classic cannot.
I am also working for a very big service department for Nokia Siemens Networks and within i learned that the customer is the king, but this doesn't seem to apply for Apple.
As has already been said, it is an EU law - and all mp3 players sold within the EU must comply with EU legislation. If you know of a brand that doesn't, perhaps it's not actually approved for sale within the EU. Apple are not going to ignore an EU law, whatever you think or say! Do you think the EU would simply roll over and let Apple ignore this law?
I am not the only complaining customer i suppose, and normally when a company is loosing (normally satisfied) customers it should think about customer oriented solutions.
    As above!
When i buy an Apple product i automatically assume a very good product, but i am really, really annoyed this time. Other producers within the EU don't play by the book and no one takes care about it, or how can the supermarket mp3 play much louder than the classic (i measured the same!! output impedance).
I believe other manufacturers do play by the book. Is "supermarket mp3 player" a euphemism for something that should not be sold within the EU?
You know - since you feel this strongly about it, you should take the matter up with your MEP (Member of the European Parliament), since what you say here will not change a thing.

  • Headphones too loud.

Does anyone else think the music plays too loud through headphones? I find that it is too loud when set at the lowest possible volume to comfortably listen to in a quiet office. Am I just crazy? Never had this problem with my ipod.

try to go to settings; ipod; sound check; switch it to on. This may help you.

  • Too loud

just in the last few days my ipod classic 120gb has become too loud even at low volumes. Any ideas

Have you tried doing a reset or restore of the device in iTunes to see if that makes a difference?
It probably wouldn't hurt to set a volume limit on the device as well.

  • Facetime the volume is too loud

I just updated my iPod touch to iOS 6 and when I  Facetime the volume is too loud even if I turn it down. I tried to restore it several times but nothing changed...what can I do? Do I have to send it to Apple support?

I am having a similar problem - but it's not exactly the same.
I upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 when it first came out and everything seemed fine.
Last weekend, I noticed that I had soem issues with music copied to my phone which I couldn't seem to delete and after a lot of mucking about, decided the ebst best was to restore my phone to basics and re-load all of my music.
I noticed when I did the restore to rhe iPhone that it downloaded a new copye of iOS as part of the restore.
After the update, I managed to clean up my music but in phone calls, the audio on my phone - through the handset speaker is too loud and it makes the speaker vibrate.  If i try to use the volume buttons, i can see the volume slider move up or down but the audio volume doesn't actually change very much and even at low levels the audio qulity is poor.  the speaker vibrates.  Strange thing is that if i put the phone call on speaker phone, it's fine.
If I use the headphones, volume does change on calls when i use the volume controls on the headphone cable.  it even changes when i use the volume buttons on the handset with the headphones plugged in and in both cases the audio quality is fine.
With the headphones in music volume is low but does adjust up and down using wither the cable volume controls or the ones on the handset.
Audio on music through my car sound system seems fine and does increase or decrease as I adjust it in the car.
The only issue seems to be phone caslls through the handset speaker in normal mode......

  • Lowest volume still too loud

I frequently listen to my iPod nano while doing other things. However, the lowest volume setting is still too loud for background music. Can that setting be changed?
    iPod Nano   Windows XP

Just to clarify...is it just the background that is too loud, or is it the whole volume output. I mean, is the background taking over the song, or is the volume simply not going low enough?
If the background is taking over the song, check the Equalizer in the Settings. Turn it to the Off setting. If that doesn't work, Restore the iPod.
Actually, for both problems try a Restore (after the EQ thing).
I hope this helps and post back!

  • The volume is just too **** loud! :)

When I hook up my iMac to the normal speaker system, it's all good, I turn the volume way up in Leopard, and then proceed to 'down-tune' it with the speaker's own volume knob.
But there are times the rest of the house is still asleep, and I use the headphones that came with my iPod. The problem is, I can't turn the volume down far enough. 0 'blocks' of volume (in Leopard) is completely muted, and 1 'block' is already too loud. Of course, some applications have their own volume control (iTunes, Quicktime, etc), so I can turn it down there, but that does not control the volume of the system's own sounds (The "Ding"-download-is-done-sound for instance).
Is there a way to turn the volume down in the system (like, 0.5 'block' would be ideal) without using headphones with a built-in volume control? (for one, I don't own one of them, and secondly, they usually destroy sound quality)
Right now, I kinda feel like Huey Lewis in Back to the Future. "It's just too **** loud".

Sorry but I don't understand which "block" you are talking about. Volume adjustment is continuous rather than discrete. If you do it in System preferences->sound, the volume bar is nice and long so it shouldn't be hard to find a good level.

Ah! I think, you mean the volume button on the keyboard. Just do it in system preferences or using the volume bar in the menu.

  • On my ipod touch, i can't seem to get the imessage app.. I have updated my itunes and even restored the ipod to factory settings with the latest update. Maybe the ipod is too old? Help

On my ipod touch, i can't seem to get the imessage app.. I have updated my itunes and even restored the ipod to factory settings with the latest update. Maybe the ipod is too old? Is that even a thing? Is there another app I can download to have access to my contacts with imessage?

That comes with iOS 5 (Settings>General>About>Version) and only the 3G abd later iPods can go to iOS 5 or later

  • ITunes 10 upgrade makes airtunes volume too loud even at minimum setting

I just updated to iTunes 10 this morning and love the interface and most of what is has to offer. I have, however, encountered an issue with the volume when streaming my music through Airtunes (or Airplay now) and my Airport Express to external speakers. I have an Express set up in my son's room and hooked up to a pair of computer speakers via a stero-mini to stereo-mini. Before the update the volume adjustment worked fine but after updating to iTunes 10 even the minimum volume is too loud for the white noise we put on to help him sleep. If you have ever had a fussy infant you understand that this is a HUGE problem. I've read the forums and come up with nothing. I know that I can manually change the master volume of the sleep sounds (get info on specific track and change master volume) but that's a ridiculous work-around. I've resorted to using Airfoil (an excellent program by the way) because I can't get Airplay to work right. All of the setting are there for it to be a real hit (individual volume settings for each set of external speakers - I have 2 airport express units) but they just DON'T WORK. What a shame that after an update I have to resort to a 3rd party program. I hope Apple hears this and updates very soon or the folks at Airfoil are going to be getting a lot of business very soon. Next post is at Engadget and Mashable
cool. please let me know if you've found a setting that I don't know about.
    thx.

iTunes 10 allows each AirTunes (AirPlay) zone to have a separate volume. Try selecting "Multiple Speakers" in the "AirPlay" tab and adjust the volume from there. Also make sure the "Preferences" settings are set to allow for remote volume to be set.

  • Nokia 2700 handsfree kit volume too loud

my car (2007 bmw with fitted in bluetooth handsfree kit) connects fine with the new 2700 nokia i bought, however people keep telling me that they can hear me too loud over the phone, while in the car the volume is ok. I didn't have this problem with my previous nokia model, or with the one my son has, 5310 Xpress Music. The problem is that i can change the volume settings in the car, only the speaker volume that is,and the phone, once connected, doesnt allow any change of volume settings.
it is just the microphone volume, so not the speaker volume, and that i don't have this problem with other nokia models...
    Yours sincerely,
    Nicolas

As always, as this is a place where people will often/likely come when they have an issue of some sort you can't really measure whether or not something is structural or 'general occuring' by posts here. No one would deny that you may have an issue, but if it were as widespread as you seem to think it would be all over the media which is isn't.
I'd have the phone checked at the retailer or a Nokia Care Point.
