IPod is working! It was the USB cord!
Out of the entire troubleshooting checklist the only one I couldn't do right away was plug into someone else's computer. I tried the USB cord in the port on the back of my own computer, but it didn't work there, either. This past weekend, however, I went to the local Best Buy and sure enough, a quick test proved that the USB cable that came with the iPod was defective. I picked up the combo Firewire/USB cable and after reinstalling everything, I got up and running. And the darn thing appears to be working flawlessly! I'm updating with no problem, my album art (for some songs I'm creating my own graphics) and art which I import are showing up with no trouble, and I'm loading up CD's and music from my vinyl collection without a hitch! I LOVE this thing!
In my two earlier posts (ok, they were rants; I admit it) I might have been a little tough on Apple. But only just a little. I'm still reading the posts of plenty of people who are struggling to get their iPods to act right. And while not all of the problems may be caused by the device itself, I think Apple needs to be more visible and responsive to user issues with their product. My goodwill towards Apple has been restored, for the most part, only because I got my iPod working. The $40 for the new cord was well worth it! In my delirium of joy, I even sprang $15 on an iTunes music card...WooHoo!
James, I wish the cable that came with my iPod had not been faulty. The guys at Best Buy were great, even though I didn't buy the unit there. Sure, I could have looked around, but I made a deliberate choice to give my business to the people who helped me. It was worth it. My iPod works flawlessly; music, photos, audiobooks...no problem. I only wish the other people on this forum who are experiencing problems with their iPod could find so easy a solution.

For how to restore:
iTunes: Restoring iOS software
To restore from backup see:
iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store -

I have restored and updated my ipod from recovery mode, however I still have the usb cord and itunes icon on the ipod when it is switched on. How can I get my ipod to work again? I have updated and restored 5 times! When connected to itunes it only shows the summary page saying ipod in recovery mode.
Fixed it!
1. Made sure itunes software was up to date
2. Pressed and held 'home' button and 'on-off' button at the same time for about 10 seconds till ipod reset (I hadn't done this step previously)
3. Connected to itunes
4. Pressed restore and update ipod

My iphone 4 is stuck on the lock screen with the USB cord pointing to itunes and music notes. I thought I was updating the phone for itunes but it is now teetering on the Recovery Mode. I do not want to lose my data, etc. Can someone explain how I can get my phone back? Apple support is not helpful.
Your phone is in recovery mode. All data on it are already lost. You must connect your phone to your computer and restore through iTunes.

My ipad (1st Generation) and my ipod touch will not come up in itunes when I connect them to my computer. My computer is a MAC and it is brand new with the updated system. Also, when I am connected to my wireless internet at home, my app store will open on my ipod touch, but it will not open on my ipad.
My USB ports work with other devices that I have, such as my camera, and I have tried plugging in the ipad and ipod to different USB ports on the computer, but itunes still won't recognize them. The USB cord that I use works. I know this because I use the same cord to plug into the wall charger and it charges both the ipad and ipod fine. Also, my itunes has been updated to the most recent version (I update it every time that it's an option). I HAVE noticed, though, that my ipad and ipod never ask me to update itunes on the actual devices themselves.
What can I do to solve this issue??? THANKS!Back up first (Time machine) as much as possible.
Un-install and re install Itunes.
First and foremost download the updated iTunes from apple website. After downloading Uninstall itunes and all its component ( Dont worry, itunes library where your movies and music is located will not be deleted. Please follow instructions on the apple support page). The problem might be the AppleMobileDevice.kext
Heres the instructions on how to un install iTunes

There's a logo that pops up on my ipod touch screen with the logo Itunes and the USB cord but is unable to connecct with iTunes...what should i do?
Resolve communication issues
Check the hosts file or TCP/IP filtering, which might cause communication issues between iTunes, ports, and servers.
Common errors: 1004, 1013, 1638, 3014, 3194, or 3000-3999. These alerts refer to gs.apple.com, say "There was a problem downloading the software", or say the "device isn't eligible for the requested build". -

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

My ipod touch has the narrow slot where the USB cord pluds in but my Sony clock Radio has the wide male plug. Is there an adapter available?
One of these adopters/cables should work:

I synced my ipod to my computer and all my music disappeared. I tryed resyncing it and it would only sync my apps and not my music. I cant add music to my ipod. I something wrong with the USB port in the IPOD, the USB Cord, or ITUNES itself. Itunes still shows that all my music is there on my ipod. Itunes is recognizing that my ipod is connected, but it doesnt recognize that theres no music on my ipod anymore. Im so sad. Someone please help me. I miss my music.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The ipod is not a storage/backup device. It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.
As the music came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there and in your backup copy of your computer. -
I dropped my ipod touch 3 generation into some water. I let it dry off completely befor turning it back on. Now it shows me the itunes logo and the usb cord picture. I restored my ipod, and now it won't connect to itunes or my computer. What should I do?
Hey
Does it charge when connected, if not you may have broken it..
You can always try an apple Genius at an Apple Store,
Jason
