IPod isn't recognized by Computers

This just started happening the day earlier. When I plugged in my iPod onto my computer, it was completely out of power. When it was plugged in, instead of the usual "Do not Disconnect" screen, with the stop symbol, it instead turned the main menu gray, with the top right icon flashing green, with a black streak in the middle. I assumed it was alright, so I left it for nearly 3 hours. When I came back, it was not charged whatsoever, and the battery icon was still flashing green. I unplugged it, restarted it, and plugged it back in, but there was no change whatsoever. In addition, it does not show up as a drive on the computer, nor does is it recognized by iTunes. I updated iTunes as well, but there was so improvement. It also did not show up as connected to the computer.
Is there anyway for this problem to be fixed, or must I get a replacement iPod?
For the spec information on the iPod, it is nearly 2 years old, Blue 2nd Generation iPod, 4GB, 1.7GB of capacity still left over.
If there are any solutions to this problem, or if there is a troubleshooting method, then that is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Strike1333

I have a similar problem. I have a 2nd generation Nano. No problems with it. Today my GF connected her 4th gen nano to my computer on a separate administrative account. (Her PC crashed). We authorized my PC to recognize her nano. Apparently, she downloaded an upgraded version of iTunes in order to set up itunes for her nano.
We can sync ok, however, when we click on "My Computer", neither iPod will show up as a USB connected device on the list of devices, files, etc for my computer.
Did Apple add some programming that keeps the iPod hidden from view in order to prevent uploading songs from the ipod to one's computer unless the songs were originally purchased from iTunes? The reason I ask that is that there are several songs on my GF's nano that were on her old computer, but, they won't sync from her nano to her new iTunes account on my computer because they weren't originally purchased from iTunes.

  • My 5th generation iPOD isn't recognized by iTunes?

When I plug my iPod into my computer, iTunes opens, but my iPod isn't recognized. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions?

By all of those suggestions, do you mean the ones I mentioned in the paragraph about or the ones in the support article I linked? Does this 5G iPod via still power on?  DId you try connecting it to another PC or Mac to see if it is recognized there?  Did you check the dock connector for any signs of debris or damage to the pins that could be preventing a connection to your PC?
Any idea how long the average iPod should last? Ours if from 2006.
Most people never get the iPod to last 6 years, so consider yourself lucky. That's quite a time span!

  • My ipod isn't recognized by any computer & itunes, and desplays a sad face.

i have had my ipod mini for eleven months and this is the first problem i have had with it.
i went on a vacation to flordia, and while i was there my ipod crashed. i had dropped it once a few days before the crash, but it continued to play my music after i dropped it.
when i go to turn it on the apple logo appears, then the depressed ipod.
my ipod isn't recognized by any computer or tunes. when i plug it into my computer, the 'do not disconnect' screen doesn't even appear. all that happens is the apple logo screen, then the depressed ipod screen, then a recharging screen appears that is stuck on the lowest point possible.
i have already tried the "five R's" and everything else in the support pages, and so far they have helped me none. all they do is bring you around in huge circles, and you end up on the page you started on.
i run a windows xp, and have everything fully upgraded.
i know, i know, many of you are having similar problems, but could you please only post if you have an answer, thanks.

I know!!! It worked just fine one day, computer recognized it and i could add or remove songs at me leisure, but now I can't even charge it on a computer becasue it doesn't exsist to it. I also tried the five steps, but you can't restore the settings on it if the computer can't find it. Finally I had my sister bending the charge piece in the ipod just for it to show up, I restored it and it didn't make a bit of difference! I lost all 800 songs on it but I still can't charge it or add songs. If you find anything out, let me know!!!

Try flipping the hold switch from off to on and then to off again and then holding the menu and center button down for about 10 seconds. It worked for me.

  • Ipod isn't recognized by itunes and computer but it still charges

i've tried a hard reset but that didn't do anything.
when i plug it into my computer i get a message saying that the USB device isn't recognized.
so, when i look at it in device manager the ipod shows up as a unknown device
and the device status says "there are no drivers installed for this device".
    anybody know what to do?

Your iPod's battery may not be charged. Plug your iPod in, wait for a moment, press a button to turn it on, and check the screen. Here are some easy steps to get the most out of your battery. Note: On recent iPod models, when the battery is completely empty, your computer may not recognize your iPod for up to 30 minutes even though it's connected and charging.

  • My ipod isn't recognized by itunes

My ipod isn't being recognized by my itunes account. Every time I plug in my Ipod, nothing happens. My ipod doesn't have the connected screen and doesn't charge, and my computer basically doesn't acknowledge its existence at all. I've tried restarting my computer many times and have reinstalled itunes twice to no avail. Please help!

i do not know if this works, but i found this in another post:

    This blog http://echeng.com/journal/2006/09/23/itunes-7-broke-my-ipod-nano/
Has a solution of changing the disc format thing me jig here it is:
    Start -> Run -> compmgmt.msc
Drill down ‘Storage’, highlight Disk Management
    Plug ipod in. Wait.
Make sure the computer management window is the topmost window. If you don’t, you won’t be able to get in there and change the drive letter of your ipod. The ipod will disappear out of the computer management window once itunes rejects it, or accepts your acknowledgement that it’s rejecting it.
Then I think i right clicked on the volume (or something) and changed the drive letter.
Just to make sure windows remembered my change, I ejected the pod and plugged it in again. Looks like it was mapped to the letter I had specified. Don’t know if this setting will hold after a reboot/cold boot.
You may want to scroll through the comments- For vista instead of run go straight to control panel, system and maintenance scroll to the bottom and create and format hard disk partitions, plug ipod in put it as G and hey presto!! hope this works for others.... before syncing with ipod if all this works you may want to download music rescue (brilliant and reliable used it a few times!) and copy all your music from the ipod after formatting.
Really hope this helps someone out there as it did me and looking forward to hearing if it has.

  • HT1353 2nd gen iPod isn't recognized by iTunes nor Windows - What to do?

I have an iPod A 1019 (2nd gen?). When I connect it to the firewire connector on my PC, the unit screen shows a checkmark and "OK to disconnect." I tried to reset with Menu + Select (=nothing happened) but Menu + Play works. Still, PC + iTunes won't recognize iPod. Help? I suspect that the software on the iPod itself is too old but since the device cannot be discovered, I can't update it. I tried iPod transfer software, but nothing recognizes my oldie. Sigh.

    Hi, Griff W.!
Thanks for taking the time to offer me the troubleshooting steps. I tried them all, but unfortunately to no avail. I can listen to the iPod, but once I connect it to my PC with the firewire cable, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or in Windows. I checked the Universal Serial Bus controllers. The iPod is nowhere to be seen. I checked the version of the software on the iPod and it's 1.5. Maybe that's the problem: the software is too old?
BTW, the firewire cable is charging the iPod.
Maybe if I could find someone with an old PC that has a firewire port?  But even if I were to make the iPod visible, would I be able to copy the songs onto my new iPod? From what I've been reading probably not. It's really exasperating. They music is legit, copied from my CDs or purchased.
I am looking at my new superslim iPod Touch 5th generation and right next to it the clickwheel iPod 2nd generation that's more than a cigarette pack sized. Progress. I guess.
Thanks for helping out. If you have any more ideas, please let me know.
    Best regards,
    D.

  • IPod isn't recognized by iTunes and iTunes opens very slow!!

    Hey!
So here's my very urgent problem (go on vacation tomorrow!!!):
Everytime I click to open iTunes, it takes about 5 minutes until it opens! I have a Windows XP and have also updated iTunes to the newest software. I don't know what the problem is...
And second, my iPod doesn't connect with iTunes, it won't be recognized by iTunes! Windows recognizes it, but iTunes doesn't. I've already tried at every USB connection, but it doesn't work! Well, once it worked and I thought that was it, but the next time it didn't work anymore!
I've got a pink iPod mini (4 GB) and I dropped it some times, but the man in the Apple Support store said, it's got nothing to do with the hardware. Really?
Who can help me please - very fast??!
    Thank you!
    Chrissy

    Sorry, don't real understand! ;-))
OK, I closed all other background applications when using iTunes. But the problem is that I couldn't do the next step because iTunes always tell me: "The software required for communicating with the iPod isn't installed correctly. Please reinstall..." So I can't drag the iPod icon from my computer (and anyway: where is "my computer"??) to iTunes application (where is that one??)
But at least it's good news that nothing's wrong with the hardware (couldn't afford a new one! ;-))
Please reply soon, it would be real cool if you'd help me with further steps... and everyone else too of course! ;-D

  • IPod isn't recognized by iTunes (TRIED EVERYTHING!!)

It still isn't being recognized. It's charing and recognized by Windows, it charges, and it even brings up iTunes when plugged in!

What do you mean by everything?  Have you really tried all the things on this page? http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/itunes/  Note that the iPod should be recognized as a digital camera for the purposes of seeing the pictures taken with the iPod camera and it should be also recognized in iTunes for all other functions.

  • My 80G iPod isn't recognized by my MacBook Pro.

My good ole 80G iPod isn't showing up in my iTunes Library when I connect it to my new MacBook Pro.  My Dell crashed so I got a MacBook.
Is it because it's such an older model that it just won't be recognized by a newer machine?  It's the one that plays videos.  I don't even remember what generation it is, it's that old.
    Thank you!!!

Is it because it's such an older model that it just won't be recognized by a newer machine?
    No.  It should still work.

  • Classic iPod isn't recognized in iTunes / Cannot Sync

My iTunes is up-to-date with 12.1.1 version.
I have a Classic iPod that was working fine until the last 2 updates.
Now it's not recognized and, therefore, won't sync.
    Here is what happens:
    (1)  Open iTunes.  It freezes
    (2)  Finally opens.  Plug in Classic iPod.   Sometimes icon shows sometimes not.  Have to often manually eject (Windows 7 won't let me as 'it's in use').
    (3)  Once finally showing.  Try to Sync.
    (4)  Get error message stating computer isn't authorized.  (Have already deauthorized and reauthorized several times).
    (5)  Then get message with 2 other UserIds that they need to be authorized or I will lose 40 songs.  (Have authorized those as well).
    (6)  Then get error message that device isn't recognized.  I have run diagnostics in iTunes as well,  Device isn't recognized.
I am fairly computer savvy, but not a computer expert by any means.  I hope that this is an easy fix.   I am concerned my iPod has outlived its time with all of these new updates.  Also, wondering if there is a driver or something I need for my iPod.
Would appreciate any help I can get.  Thank you!
