Ipod isn't recognized by itunes and computer but it still charges

i've tried a hard reset but that didn't do anything.
when i plug it into my computer i get a message saying that the USB device isn't recognized.
so, when i look at it in device manager the ipod shows up as a unknown device
and the device status says "there are no drivers installed for this device".
anybody know what to do?

Your iPod's battery may not be charged. Plug your iPod in, wait for a moment, press a button to turn it on, and check the screen. Here are some easy steps to get the most out of your battery. Note: On recent iPod models, when the battery is completely empty, your computer may not recognize your iPod for up to 30 minutes even though it's connected and charging.

  • IPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs

iPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs. I have about 1400 songs and just got 40 more, and before I bought those 40 my iTunes was wiped out. I still had the files so my iTunes was filled up again. Now, when I connect my iPod to the computer it is recognized and then it says "do not disconnect" then after a few seconds it says "ipod update is complete- ok to disconnect". but it did not upload any songs. How can I make it work?

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
Then restore your iPod to factory settings.

    Hello,
The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...
<a href="How to put your iPod into disk mode</a>
Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?
Have you checked this link out?:
    <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941">iPod doesn't charge correctly
Does your iPod appear in "My Computer"? If so...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
    If not...
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes
Post back on what happens when you try these things out. I hope this helps!

  • IPod isn't recognized by iTunes and iTunes opens very slow!!

    Hey!
So here's my very urgent problem (go on vacation tomorrow!!!):
Everytime I click to open iTunes, it takes about 5 minutes until it opens! I have a Windows XP and have also updated iTunes to the newest software. I don't know what the problem is...
And second, my iPod doesn't connect with iTunes, it won't be recognized by iTunes! Windows recognizes it, but iTunes doesn't. I've already tried at every USB connection, but it doesn't work! Well, once it worked and I thought that was it, but the next time it didn't work anymore!
I've got a pink iPod mini (4 GB) and I dropped it some times, but the man in the Apple Support store said, it's got nothing to do with the hardware. Really?
Who can help me please - very fast??!
    Thank you!
    Chrissy

    Sorry, don't real understand! ;-))
OK, I closed all other background applications when using iTunes. But the problem is that I couldn't do the next step because iTunes always tell me: "The software required for communicating with the iPod isn't installed correctly. Please reinstall..." So I can't drag the iPod icon from my computer (and anyway: where is "my computer"??) to iTunes application (where is that one??)
But at least it's good news that nothing's wrong with the hardware (couldn't afford a new one! ;-))
Please reply soon, it would be real cool if you'd help me with further steps... and everyone else too of course! ;-D

  • IPod isn't recognized by iTunes and won't let Windows format it

I have an iPod classic that won't do much of anything. It won't turn on and rarely gets past the apple logo. It it does get past the apple logo though it asks as if you just bought it and asks your language and has nothing on it. If you go into settings though it says that all of the memory it used up. It also has the games on it but if you try to play them the iPod crashes. If I plug it into the computer iTunes won't recognize and and Windows will not format it.
I do not care about getting any of the previous data on the iPod back I just wish to use it again.

    Hi Pigwarts5ever,
If you are having issues with your iPod Classic not being recognized by iTunes on your Windows machine, you may find the following article helpful:
Apple Support: iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows

If you are able to get it recognized, your best next step would be to restore it to factor settings:

  • Ipod isn't recognized by itunes or computer.....

I used my ipod nano a couple of days ago then plugged it into my computer to charge the battery. I went to use it today and it’s dead. Neither my computer nor itunes recognize it. I have tried to restart it and restarted my computer. No luck. Any suggestions? Do I need to get it serviced?
    Thanks.

First thing to do is reset the FW chip set on the mother board (or USB chip set if that is what you are connecting your Mini to you Mac). Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac) and then remove the laptop's battery. Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive.
Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the battery pack plug the power cord back in, & start up the Mac. Now plug in accessories/hard-drives and see if your FW (or USB) ports and the iPod work any better.
    Best of luck!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My 5th generation iPOD isn't recognized by iTunes?

When I plug my iPod into my computer, iTunes opens, but my iPod isn't recognized. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions?

By all of those suggestions, do you mean the ones I mentioned in the paragraph about or the ones in the support article I linked? Does this 5G iPod via still power on?  DId you try connecting it to another PC or Mac to see if it is recognized there?  Did you check the dock connector for any signs of debris or damage to the pins that could be preventing a connection to your PC?
Any idea how long the average iPod should last? Ours if from 2006.
Most people never get the iPod to last 6 years, so consider yourself lucky. That's quite a time span!

  • HT1353 2nd gen iPod isn't recognized by iTunes nor Windows - What to do?

I have an iPod A 1019 (2nd gen?). When I connect it to the firewire connector on my PC, the unit screen shows a checkmark and "OK to disconnect." I tried to reset with Menu + Select (=nothing happened) but Menu + Play works. Still, PC + iTunes won't recognize iPod. Help? I suspect that the software on the iPod itself is too old but since the device cannot be discovered, I can't update it. I tried iPod transfer software, but nothing recognizes my oldie. Sigh.

    Hi, Griff W.!
Thanks for taking the time to offer me the troubleshooting steps. I tried them all, but unfortunately to no avail. I can listen to the iPod, but once I connect it to my PC with the firewire cable, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or in Windows. I checked the Universal Serial Bus controllers. The iPod is nowhere to be seen. I checked the version of the software on the iPod and it's 1.5. Maybe that's the problem: the software is too old?
BTW, the firewire cable is charging the iPod.
Maybe if I could find someone with an old PC that has a firewire port?  But even if I were to make the iPod visible, would I be able to copy the songs onto my new iPod? From what I've been reading probably not. It's really exasperating. They music is legit, copied from my CDs or purchased.
I am looking at my new superslim iPod Touch 5th generation and right next to it the clickwheel iPod 2nd generation that's more than a cigarette pack sized. Progress. I guess.
Thanks for helping out. If you have any more ideas, please let me know.
    Best regards,
    D.

  • Three 5th gen nanos. One NOT recognized by itunes and computer; other 2 fine.

I have 3 daughters and three 5th gen nanos. I use the same cord, plug and computer, and one is not being recognized by itunes or computer and will not charge; other 2 fine. Something wrong with just the one. Resetting (pressing menu and center until apple appears?) doesn't work. One daughter very SAD. Please help if you can.
Oh, and I've also put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.

I think I found the problem, and it may be useful to others. I cosely looked at the dock connector next to the earphone jack and found that it has a chip in it. Not good news for Gen 5 ipod nano's. Apparently, the connector is bonded to the logic board. I did find that if I gently put pressure on it in one directio or the other, it will make a connection.
Must break the bad news to daughter. Sad face.

  • My iphone 4s is recognized by itunes and iphoto, but it will not show as a device in finder for macbook pro

My iPhone 4s is recognized by itunes and iphoto however it does not show up in finder under devices.

I don't agree - I have two IMacs and two iPhones - the iPhone 4S show up on one machine, but not the other.  They do show that they are charging, and a memory stick will open on the same USB ports.  So, I don't think this is how they are "supposed to work"......
