see if this tip by BeeBopp helps (it's for Vista but it may also apply to your case):
+This solution is very similar to one above but worked for me. Am using iPod Touch 2nd Gen with 32 bit version of Windows Vista where the iTouch is being seen by Windows but does not show in iTunes. In my case it was being identified by Windows as a camera. I tried un-installing and re-installing iTunes and all the other Apple apps with no luck. Was almost ready to throw in the towel when I did one last search for alternate solutions and found the following instructions to reinstall the drivers, but instead of having the system look to the c:\Windows\inf or c:\windows\system 32 folders for the drivers, the path is changed to C:\program files\common files\Apple\Apple Mobile Support\Drivers, which is apparently where Vista installs the drivers. Once I changed the path the driver properly reflected the iTouch as a USB device, and not a digital camera. Try this if you are having similiar issues.+
+Here are the steps:+
+1. Verify you have the following files usbaapl.cat, usbaapl.inf & usbaapl.sys in the following directory "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers"+
+2. Log in using an ADMINISTRATIVE account+
+3. Single left click on START+
+4. Single left click on RUN (You may need to change the start menu to 'classic view' to see RUN, you can change back after if you like)+
+5. Type in " devmgmt.msc " then hit Enter (Don't type in the quotes)+
+6. Look for Imaging in the Device Manager window, and click on plus sign (In Vista you may not see the "Imaging" option. Look under "Portable Devices" as an alternative)+
+7. Now you should see " Apple iPod " as a device underneath Imaging (or Portable Devices)+
+8. Right click on " Apple iPod " then single left click on Properties+
+9. Single left click on the " Driver " tab+
+10. Single left click on " Update driver "+
+11. Select " Install from a list or specific location " or "Browse my computer" whichever shows on your version of Vista+
+12. Single left click on " Include this location in the search " if shown+
+13. Paste " C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers " (Don't type in the quotes) into the box " Include this location in the search "+
+14. Single left click NEXT and keep clicking through until " Apple iPod USB Driver " is detected, if no list appears then you should see the little animated circle thingie spinning. It's looking and working. Be patient.+
+15. Hopefully you will get a successful message.+
+16. The correct drivers(s) are now installed.+
+17. Start up iTunes, and see if you iPod is detected again.+

  • Ipod not seen in itunes

I need help!!! My dad gave me his old ipod (nano 3rd gen) because it holds more songs than mine. All I want to do is put the songs from my library onto the new ipod but when I plug it in it shows up in my computer but not in itunes. This is very frustrating! Any suggestions on how to get my new ipod to sync to my itunes???

Have you tried plugging in a different USB port? Used a different cable?
If the iPod is recognized in iTunes on a differnt computer, you may need to remove/reinstall iTunes on your computer.

  • IPod not seen by iTunes, but is seen by Explorer

Hi, I just bought an iPod 30GB and installed iTunes 7.1.1.5 and when I opened iTunes and plugged in the iPod, iTunes tells me something like this:
The application required to communicate with the iPod is not installed correctly. Reinstall iTunes to install the iPod application.
Naturally, I already have done that, but I also did everything I could find on "iTunes Help" and "iPod Help" regarding iTunes not seeing the iPod while Explorer does.
If anybody has any suggestions please reply.
Or if anyone ran into the same problem I am in and they could fix it. Please tell me how you proceded.
I am going at sea for the next two months, so I will look at all the suggestions once at get back and then give feed back on that at that time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

At first, my iPod was working just fine with iTunes 7 then I started to get the same problems as others have been reporting. I found the solution but it was just better for me to go back to the previous version of iTunes(which gave me no problems) until iTunes 7 is fixed. So, I don't think Firewire has anything to do with it.

  • 3rd gen iPod not seen by iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista

3rd gen iPod and iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista
Used to be flawless. I'd drop the iPod on the dock, Windows would
make that sound of a device attaching, my iPod would appear in iTunes
    and the updating would happen.
Then after going out of town for a weekend (for a funeral), I come back, and my iTunes doesn't see the iPod. I do all the things Apple support and this group has suggested in the past (uninstall/install/reformat iPod/clear registry). It works again! Hooray.
Last night, I plug in the iPod, and iTunes doesn't see the iPod---AGAIN.
I repeat the process above, but this time it doesn't work.
Now, I put the iPod on the dock, Windows beeps, the iPod displays "Do
not connect" but the iPod doesn't appear in iTunes. Eventually the
iPod display will change to a plain old charging display.
    Any ideas?

If you are connecting using USB (and it has the click-wheel ), it's probably a 4th gen iPod...
Not that it matters in this case. The most likely cause is the hard drive has become faulty. It may have worked when you reformatted the iPod the first time because any bad sectors were mapped out. If the drive has too many bad sectors (or has developed some other problems), reformatting will no longer work.
You can run some internal iPod tests using Diagnostic Mode. Use this handy guide to see how to put your iPod into this mode.

  • IPod not seen after iTunes 7.4.2 update

It appears that since updating to iTunes 7.4.2 my 5th Generation iPod is not seen by my e-mac (Disk Utility) or iTunes. The iPod itself freezes when plugged in, will not charge & needs to be re-set in order to be used again.
Lucky I have a separate mains charger.
I guess we'll have to wait for that 'Emergency' update Apple will be sending out any day now.........
..........or does anyone have a better idea?

Now we know why Apple has been selling the heck out of iPods! Very good marketing plan!!! Give you a download that makes your older iPod obsolete, and not usable with the new update (7.4.--) So, you go buy a brand new iPod, figuring it will of course work. Nothing on the box says the new "Classic" won't work on Macs using 10.3.9. Sooooo ...now you have to go buy a new computer. Ahaaa---sales skyrocket!
No help from Apple, two obsolete iPods, an obsolete Nano, and an un-usable new Classic (which I plan to return).... VW

  • Ipod isnt recognized by itunes software when plugged in! Wont sync library

recently purchased an HP Pavilion laptop--loaded my ipod software onto it--i already had done the same with my desktop 3 years ago and everything worked fine. Software loaded fine-no probs, but when I brought ipod up--i can access library but not songs on ipod(greyed out). From my desktop I backed up my song list and was able to successfully put it in laptop--but it still wont let me access my ipod when its plugged in, it wont sync any new music from library, or that I imported!(new music that I import goes into library though) The only thing that was weird after i put the software onto my laptop--it wasn't my library that came up--so i deleted the 10 songs that were on there and then downloaded my music into it which worked fine--but I can't read anything on my ipod--steps I've taken so far are to 1-install latest version of itunes, restart ipod, authorize use of computer (which said now 2 of 5 computers were authorized)...any suggestions????pretty please

Yes, the list on my computer of what is in my iPod library is grey, not black font. I tried "manual" but it will not allow me to drag anything to the iPod. Not even newly purchased music.
That certainly sounds like one of the Automatic syncing options has been engaged.
... quickly doublechecking, just in case. After selecting "Manually manage ..." in the device tab for the iPod in iTunes, did you click "Apply"?

  • Ipod isnt recognized by itunes or computer

First of all, with your iPod connected, try resetting it. It may take several attempts. Also, try other usb ports on your computer.
Then, if that doesn't work look here.

  • IPod not seen in Itunes, restore factory settings and...

It works, I have a working iPod until I decided to remove it from my PC (usually more than once). I took it in the car the other day, plugged it back into my computer and iTunes still saw it fine. Took it again today, bring it home, plug it back into computer and open iTunes. iTunes suddenly can't view the contents, etc. It works as a hard drive in Windows.
I've reset and restored about 10 times now. It keeps doing this. iTunes sees it fine then randomly one day stops seeing it. Today when I plugged it back in, iTunes couldn't see it and then it suddenly had only one artists left on it (when I had JUST played it and it had 1,200+ songs on it definitely by more than once artist). All of my pics were still there but the music? All gone except the one artist. This has happened ever since iTunes had a update your software on your iPod warning. I did. Since then I have to restore every time or every other time that I want to connect it to iTunes, re-synch all of my pics and music, put the files back on the hard drive... and two days later do it all over again.
It's getting really frustrating. Is there any fix that works and KEEPS it fixed? The ones listed on the site have all been tried, day after day, after day. sigh

I had a problem with my iPod Video 60GB being updated when I updated to iTunes 7 and it got worse (had to wait a very long time for it to update my iPod if it ever did) when I updated to iTunes 7.0.1.8. Then I was advised that iTunes shouldn't have installed with the 'old iPod updaters' still installed, but it did. So I uninstalled the 'old iPod updaters' via 'Add and Remove Programs' in control panel. When I rebooted iTunes said the iPod software was missing and instructed me to re-install iTunes. After the re-install everything runs great. Presently, I only have iTunes 7.0.1.8, Apple Software Update on my computer and version 1.2 on my iPod.

  • Ipod not seen in Itunes 7.0.1

This is a real pain. I upgraded Itunes to 7.0.1 and it stopped recognizing my Ipod. The only way I can get it to see the ipod is by stopping and restarting the Ipod service in the computer management window. But once I tunes sees the Ipod and tries to update the Ipod software it starts but never finishes. I can not restore because I can't see the Ipod in Itunes. So i have tried 4 of the 5 R's but cant get to the last R. This is very frustrating, and the lack of support for a multi billion dollar product is infuriating.

  • Ipod not seen by itunes?

Have bought a refurbed Ipod for my son and set up a new account on my laptop. Husband uses older version of itunes on home pc. Ipod initially picked up by itunes and it has named it but will not generally sync. Have run diagnostics and it says cannot see Ipod but when you connect it says syncing on screen and if you go to file devices sync it says it is synced but it doens't update. I say generally because suddenly a screen came up that showed a picture of the 3rd gen nano and a bar across the bottom and an autofill option which I selected and it filled the nano. Then when I tried to sync changes we had made back to sncing on screen but no change to content. Have reinstalled itunes and reset ipod to no avail. Help - sons birthday in two days - Is the ipod duff or could it be something else?

The fact that Windows sees your iPod as a drive is a good sign, Allan. See this:
iPod does not appear in iTunes
Here's something else you can try for this problem if the tips in the above links don't work:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Open the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-Delete)
    3. Click the Processes tab
    4. Locate the following processes (if they're present), and end them:
    -iPodService.exe
    -iTunesHelper.exe
    -iTunes.exe
    5. Restart iTunes

  • Ipod not seen on itunes

hi everyone, i've tried everything and i still cannot see my ipod on itunes. when i connect the ipod it does not recognize it. i cannot sync any new songs to my ipod. i've wasted 2 days trying to fix this.. please HELP!!

Hello, I'm not sure if my problem is the same as everyone else's or not but please bear with me.
I recently bought a secondhand iPod (fourth generation, colour screen, 40GB) and I have managed to successfully connected it to both my pc at work and my pc laptop. However, I can't seem to see it on my Mac! It's not visible on the desktop or in iTunes. All my music is in iTunes on my Mac and so this is really frustrating as I am currently having to burn all my cds (AGAIN) to the pc laptop in order to load them onto the iPod.
I am running iTunes v 7.6.1 on the Mac, if that makes a difference.
There must be a solution to this! Anyone got any ideas?
PS. I have tried using different USB sockets, resetting the iPod, restarting iTunes and the Mac, etc etc

  • My iPod isnt connecting to iTunes

this is my father's iPod and we have 2 separate computers.
here's what ive done so far.
i tried plugging his ipod into my computer. it didnt show up. my own ipod did show up so it wasnt a physical connection problem. i took the ipod to the apple store where it connected just fine. i also realized i should've tried connecting it to my dad's computer instead of mine. oh well. anyway so they erased the ipod in case that was the reason the connection wasnt showing.
tried plugging it into dad's computer right now. not connecting. it does at least say do not disconnect on the ipod, which it wasnt before the apple store when i was plugging it into my computer (it was indeed getting recharged, but the dont d/c never came). but its not showing up in  itunes.
    help!
    thanks
