IPod, iTunes, and Windows XP Pro SP2

I recently upgraded my computer from running Windows XP Pro (no service packs installed) to running Windows XP Pro SP1a, and now SP2.
While running SP1a, I connected my iPod (5th Generation video, 30GB model) to my computer, but it didn't appear in My Computer, nor iTunes. It was recognized by Windows, as noted by the "Safely Remove Hardware" option, as well as my normal "
"HI-SPEED in non-HI-SPEED" warning (my computer is running USB 1.1). I've also tried all four ports, and all four gave me the same response.
I tried connecting it again once I installed SP2, and again, same problems arose. I began trying to troubleshoot it by doing the Right Click on My Computer -> Manage -> Start/Stop iPod Service thing, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, repairing iTunes, using the CD I got with my iPod... nothing worked, and it's still only be recognized but basically unusuable.
The iPod displays the "Do Not Disconnect" message, and shows signs of being charged, so I know it can't be anything wrong with the connection. I've also connected it to my school laptop (running XP Pro SP2, USB 2.0 connection) and it worked perfectly fine, showed up in My Computer and everything.
I've even run iTunes, gone to Help menu -> Run Diagnostics -> iPod Diagnostics, and 3 of the 4 "lights" are green; the last one, "iPod Connection Status" is red. And that, of course, tells me nothing about why my iPod won't be recognized otherwise.
I've come to the conclusion that, under SP2, you can't use USB 1.1 but that makes absolutely no sense at all... could anyone help me out and give me any ideas as to whether or not that is true, or else what might be causing the problem?
Thanks so much in advance!

Just tossing in my experience quickly:
Ever since I "upgraded" to v7 of iTunes, my iPod (60G w/Video) hasn't been recognized, same as Rebecca. Also my TransFlash memory cards aren't recognized, either. I went through many steps listed in these forums, to no avail; I even did a repair install of Windows. I have noticed in my Device Manager the following: a yellow exclamation point beside "parport" and "serial". (Right-click "My Computer" > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices) For both of these entries, under their properties, it says this: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)" I haven't found much info surfing the net as of yet... I hope this info helps a bit. Don't mean to hijack, here, either. But in my opinion the new iTunes upgrade corrupts the windows registry somehow, as this story of mine seems to be quite prevalent...

  • Ipod nano and windows XP pro

I just purchased a new Ipod nano. I installed iTunes 7 and am able to download and move songs. Itunes recognizes my ipod but everytime I dock or open iTunes I get a:
Found new hardware wizard that pops up. It states
" there was a problem installing this hardware.
    Apple iPod USB Device
The specified service does not exist as an installed service"
Some times it will pop up 4 or 5 times and the only option button that work is the "Finish" button. After 4 or 5 times it goes away until I close and re-open Itunes or undock and dock my Ipod.
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thanks!!

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC

  • Computer says iPod is there, but iTunes and Windows won't recognize it

I've had a 60GB ipod photo for about 4 years and it has served me well. This morning the iPod froze in the middle of a song. I hit reset, and it came back blank - all the files were gone. When I got to work and hooked it up to my computer, iTunes and Windows can't recognize it, but I can find it in device manager - which means I couldn't do restore.
I hit reset a few more times, changed USB ports and, somewhat miraculously, the iPod came back, complete with all files. On the way home from work it happened again and I haven't been so lucky.
I forced it into disk mode and iTunes recognized it, but told me it was corrupt. I also received a computer sound card error - my sound card was busy, and an error stating that audio/video playback could be limited. I tried restore, but I received the unknown error. I'm using the latest version of iTunes and I'm all out of ideas.
Any suggestions or should I put this iPod to rest and save up to buy a new one?
    Thanks

The most likely problem is that the hard drive in the iPod is becoming unreliable. It may be experiencing sticktion, which is friction that makes the spinning platter stick and the motor cannot get it spinning. The iPod is regularly spinning the hard drive up, to cache songs into memory, and then spinning it down, to save power. If the drive was not able to spin up when commanded (in the middle of a song), the iPod would seem to lock up. Later, bumping the iPod may make the hard drive spin again, so it seems to work again, at least for a while.
If this the the problem, the only way to fix it would be to replace the hard drive inside.
You might try reformatting the iPod using Windows, if you can get it to appear in a My Computer or Windows Explorer window. Use a full format instead of a quick format. If that process competes successfully, run iTunes and try using Restore again to install and initialize the iPod's software.
If formatting does not compete successfully, it may be time for that new iPod.
You can do some experimenting on the old iPod, if you're into such things. I have successfully installed a compact flash card (through an adapter), inside a 4th gen iPod as a replacement for the hard drive. It is only 4GB at the moment, but CF cards up to 16GB are getting relatively cheap, so I might get one of those and start using by old broken 4G iPod again, +now with shock-resistant energy-saving flash-based storage+.

  • Ipod freezes itunes and windows explorer

I have been trying to connect a new 30G Ipod to my Vista computer and everytime I do both Itunes and Windows Explorer freeze. Neither recognize my ipod. I tried to change the drive designation but couldn't because of Explorer freezing. I did run the same Ipod on my XP and everything worked fine so it is a problem with my Vista computer or with the ITunes (7.2.035) software. Any ideas?

Disconnect the printer, use a rear port on your computer and try it again.

  • Apple Mobile Device Support fails to install on Windows XP Pro SP2

I have a dualboot between my Vista and my XP, my itunes on Vista works great and can connect with my ipod touch (2.1) but on my XP the installation of AMDS fails. Tried completly re-installing all services, i searched the internet for possible solutions but it seems i'm the only one having problems with windows XP, all the other similar problems are on Vista.
I know it's AMDS that fails because i unpacked the .exe file and ran all the installers one by one, they all work except AMDS (i get a rollback feature). I downloaded it with 3 different browsers from the official apple site and to eliminate that it's my hard drive that gives errors i also did a CHKDSK.
Also, it's not my ipod either, it can connect to my Vista and other computers with windows XP.
All the latest drivers are installed and during the installation no CD/USB was inserted except my mouse, i even tried it with the CD tray open (sometimes helps). Safe mode also doesn't work
I have no idea what's wrong. Could anyone help me out?

    Hi,
good news: You're not the only one with this problem. Bad news: I don't have a solution either. To restrict possible answers here is what I did so far:
    - computer was set up brand new with Windows XP Pro SP2
    - iTunes installed, AMDS didn't, everything deleted after this, nothing (no iTunes, no Quicktime, no Apple updater) left on computer
    - disconnected laptop from network, switched off firewall, switched off virus scan
    - ran install package for AMDS only, as Johan described, install won't finish, files are first copied then everything gets rolled back (and no log found). This means the service is not existing, so the problem is NOT solved by going into services and switch it on ...
    ANYONE PLEEEASE?
    Cheers & thanks

  • Erro 3256 using Apple Airport Express with Windows XP Pro SP2

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and am trying to stream my music to the Livng room from my PC in my office. I use an Apple Airport Express. I am running iTunes 8.0.1.11 on the computer that isn't getting the signal through. Now please read the entire message before you decide it is the version of iTunes that I am using.
It was getting through just fine on my Denon 3300 but since I switched to a Denon 3802 the signal is not geting through from my main computer. It works fine from the computer sittng adjacent to it.
I also have music on a 2nd computer and am running iTunes 7.6.2.9 on it. The music gets to the living room stereo just fine using the same Apple Airport Express. The signal strength on the computer that is successful in streaming the music to the Apple Airport Express is "excellent". On the computer that is not successful, the signal strenth is "low". Now these computers are adjacent to each other and the signal has to go through the same wall and
exactly the same distance over the same network.
How can it be "excellent" on one and "low" on the other? Is it just a matter of signal strength? How do I fix that?
I keep getting "unknown error occurred 3256"
Help please. Do I have to do something to the network? or???
Remember I am a Windows user, not a Mac user. I do not have a "Configure IPv6" setting anywhere in my preferences. That must be a Mac thing.

Got the error message 3256 after downloaded latest itunes version 8.xx.
After days of reading logs and bullentin boards, uninstalling, hard resets, firewalls experiments, etc, I found solution for me. Following firmware upgrade to airport express solved. When you go to Apple download center and search for airport revisions only the MAc version pops up. However they do have this one for windows. Give it a try. Good luck.

  • Using colour profiles with Windows XP Pro SP2

    Hi,
Freshly-installed WIndows XP Pro SP2 on the Unibody MBP.
I note that in the advanced display settings there is a tab for colour management. It offers the opportunity to add a .icc or .icx (I think) colour profile. I copied across my .icc-prefixed colour profile from my Leopard install, added it, and Windows reports it as invalid.
Can anyone tell me how (or whether it's possible) to make a Leopard-created .icc profile work with XP Pro SP2? If it's not possible, can someone suggest some free software for XP Pro SP2 that I can use to achieve a similar result?
    Thanks.

  • HELP: Conflict between iPod/iTunes and AverMedia USB vid cap device ?!?

I have: an iPod photo with a firewire connection and latest iTunes, an AverMedia DVD EZMaker Pro USB2.0 (an analog video capture device), on a Gateway 9310X desktop with Windows XP.
I cannot get both iPod/iTunes and the AverMedia video capture device to work on my system.
After pulling my hair out for many days trying to get these to work, I did a full Windows System Recovery to wipe out everything on my hard drive, and then restore it to the original state when Gateway first shipped it. I did that twice...
The first time, I installed just the AverMedia USB hardware and software. I used it for several hours and it worked fine capturing video from my camcorder. Then I installed the iPod/iTunes software, and the problems began (see below).
The second time I did a full System Recovery, I installed just the iPod/iTunes software. I played with all of it's features for over an hour and that worked fine. Then I installed the AverMedia driver and the problems appeared (see below).
    There are two problems:
    (1) When using iTunes (playing music from iPod), music will play normally for a few moments, then it is replaced by a constant high pitched tone. Once this happens, even other applications (eg: Winamp) will only produce the high pitched tone. I am connecting my iPod to a firewire port.
    (2) When I plug in the AverMedia video capture hardware to the USB port, I get a message that the new hardware was not installed properly. And the bundled video capture software cannot find the device. Usually, if I reboot and use only the AverMedia product without using iTunes at all, it will work fine.
Any suggestions about how to resolve this apparent conflict?
    Thanks!

OK, what exactly have you tried? I don't want to waste my time and yours suggesting things you've already done.
A little tip for the future; when something starts to degrade, that's the time to look at it, don't wait for it to fail altogether, the remedy is likely to be more costly, painful, difficult and time consuming (or all of the above).

  • New ipod 60gb and windows 98

I got a 60gb Ipod but only have windows 98...is there an Itunes that would work with windows 98 so I can download onto my new Ipod?

If I'm not mistaken...the requirements listed on the new video iPods are the same as the new nano: Windows 2000 (SP4) or Windows XP/Pro (SP2) plus iTunes 7.0 or later.

I've tried all the other configuraton wizards on XP...no joy.

    Right Click on My Computer
    Select Manage
    Click on Device Manager
Make sure that your Ethernet Adapters are working properly
If there is an red X or a yellow ! next to any ethernet adapter then try to reinstall the drivers.
(you can reinstall the drivers via the installation cd or double click on the hardware device under device manager. there should be a reinstall drivers button in there. point it to the CD that you burned from bootcamp)
(there will be a couple of devices that are not working properly.)

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom after downgrading from Vista

    Hi everybody.
I successfully downgraded my T61p from Vista to XP Pro SP2 using the downgrade cd-roms send by Lenovo.
Everything seems to work well. I downloaded all drivers. No problem.
But I recently installed a rather old software that I frequently used on my old A31p. This software (a Microsoft program !) has automatically modified some files from XP Pro without any autorization.
Once it was done, I was asked by the system to insert the original Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom to repair this modification.
Of course, the (Vista to XP) downgrade cd-rom set was not recognized by the Thinkpad as the original XP set.
    An original cd-rom which I finally don't have !
I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful.
Where could I find the XP Pro SP2 cd-rom corresponding to the downgraded system ?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Regards.

    Thinkpad A31p - T42p - T61p - TP Tablet

    James,
    thanks for your answer.
But I wrote on my first post "I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful."
Thus, I don't see any difference between an original Microsoft Windows XP2 Pro SP2 version cd-rom and one created by burning a downloaded version of the OS. An original was not recognized, what would a copy do ?
If possible, it might be probably better to create an XP Pro SP2 cd-rom from the "Rescue and Recovery" files which were reinstalled when downgrading from Vista to XP. (I hate the word "downgrade" : while I was doing it, I had the feeling I was upgrading my Thinkpad !)
I have been using for several years (and still use) an A31p (Since 2002, 8 to 10 hours a day) and a T42p. IMHO, the T61p is the same category of "great" notebooks. Thinkpads are really the best notebooks I have ever used. I noted no significant difference between IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads.
