Ipod/Itunes books. are they worth it?

I'm not the most technologically connected person.  While I've got some help here in the communities,  I find it easier to read an actual book/paper for instructions on how to do things.   Are there any books out there that are worth it and/or helpful?   I'm sure I'll stll ask questions here but it might be easier if I had a book to look to

I do not know of any.  The problem is that things change so fast by the time a book would be published it would be out of date.

  • Lanyard Headphones-why the shortage? Are they worth it?

Are they worth it? Why the shortage? When will they be available? I've had them on order from PCCONNECTION for 3 weeks with no product in sight...
    Thanks.

Well, the lanyard and tubes are still listed on this site:
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/accessories.html
But I cancelled my order and went with a Zcover (comes with a lanyard) and the Sennheiser MX-400 ear buds... They have pretty decent sound for under $10.00 U.S. I just got sick of waiting and decided to let someone else test them and report back.

I downloaded podcasts into my ipod.  Where are they?

    Under the Podcasts menu, obviously.
If you do not have Podcasts listed on your Main Menu, go to the Settings/Music menu and scroll down to Podcasts and press the Select (centre) button so there is a tick next to Podcasts.

  • Can't Sync - iPod & iTune Libraries are Differant

Something happened to my iTunes library. It won't sync with my iPod. I get a warning that the iPod is associated with another library, and since I can only have one library, I will lose the songs on the iPod if I sync with iTunes.
How can I get everything into one library without losing songs on the iPod and the iTunes? Thanks for any suggestions.

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Ipod shuffle system requirements for itunes 5 are they real?

The System requirements posted on Apple's website ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodshuffle) for the Shuffle say it will work with iTunes 4.7.1 or later.
    Mac System Requirements
    - A Mac with USB port*
    - Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 and later (Mac OS X 10.3.6 or later recommended for use with low-power USB ports)
    - iTunes 4.7.1 or later (included)
The box on a new Shuffle says
Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later [snip]
    - iTunes 5.0 or later (included)
I've been using my Shuffle with X.3.8, iTunes 4.7.1 and iTunes 4.9, and Quicktime 6.5.2 until its minijack went defective. I need a replacement shuffle and don't want to upgrade my OS, my itunes, or my QT.
Are these system requirements for real? If I use the iPod Shuffle 1.1 updater will the new Shuffle work with my OS/itunes?
I ask about the updater because once when my current shuffle's playcount stoped updating an Apple Genius suggesting updating the firmware from ipod updater 1 to 1.1 and ever since I can't restore it to version 1 (it gives failure to update errors). I worry that a new Shuffle won't be downgradeable.
If not what version of itunes 5 is best? I recall it was so buggy that it was bum rushed out the door.
Under no circumstances do I want itunes 6. I had 6.0.1. and 6.0.2 on a new hard disk a few months ago (and it required X.3.9 and QT 7) and it was awful! The sound volume dropped precipitously and the sound check didn't work.

Never mind. I returned the Shuffle for a refund. Apple lost a repeat sale by failing to practice the slightest bit of backwards compatibility!
I'm now in the market for an MP3 player that will work on Macs and that can also record audio. If anyone knows of any makes/models please let me know.

  • Refurbished Ipods - Are they worth the money?

Anyone got input on refurbished ipods?
Mine has a hard drive problem, not sure if I want to deal with the headache of replacing the hard drive, or just to buy a refurbished one.

I've bought several refurbished iPods from the Apple Refurbished Store for myself and my family. Apart from the different packaging, they've all been in new condition with no scratches or marks and have all performed flawlessly. In fact you've got more chance of a brand new, off-the-factory-line unit developing a fault than a refurbished unit as they are fully tested before being dispatched. They're covered by the same 1 year warranty as retail versions and you can purchase the Applecare policy as well. When you can save so much money, I would highly recommend refurbished iPods. The only negative is that as I live in the UK, the refurbished store doesn't have as a wide variety of iPods as in the US refurbished store and as stock levels can fluctuate, you can never guarantee that the iPod you want will be in the refurbished store at any one time.

  • My ipad password doesn't work when I want to go into Itunes. Are they they same?, My ipad password doesn't work when I want to go into Itunes. Are they they same?

We are trying to buy from itunes store and have reset the password on the market can you please advice if the itunes password is same as ipad password. Why can't I get to store?

I assume that you mean the iTunes account password and the password to unlock the iPad itself when you are asking this question. They would be the same if you set them to be the same only you can answer that
Go to settings>Store>Apple ID and tap on sign out. Then sign in again and enter the new(reset) iTunes account password there. See if you can purchase after signing in again with the reset password.

It is not in iTunes on your iPad.
I have all sorts of options to look formusicandmovies and photos butthere is no"advanced" settings, and thereis no "file - settings - advanced".
Because it is in iTunes on your computer because that is what AppleTV uses to play videos.
Notice the paragraph heading and paragraph 2

Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes.
Mac: Choose iTunes > Check for Updates.Windows: Choose Help > Check for Updates.

Note: If you're using iTunes 10.7 or earlier, choose Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing.

  • External HDD   G-Tech  are they worth it.

I will need to get an external HDD for my forthcoming iMac, and am looking around at which to get.
Now all the photos I see on the Apple website or in emails they send me have the G-Tech external HDD on show.
Are these really worth the premium price over other brands or just good marketing by G-Tech to get them used by Apple
    I'm looking at a 1TB firewire 800 Drive.

What are you using that drive for? If it's for Time Machine, a fast drive would certainly not hurt, but it is not necessary either. Time Machine would work fine over a USB 2.0 connection, and USB 2.0 external drives are usually less expensive. They also seem to be less finicky, and even the cheap stuff works reliably. I have a large external SATA drive connected (more or less permanently) to one of these USB adapters
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
and it's been working fine as my Time Machine drive for over one year. I just put four little adhesive rubber nubs (that you can find in a hardware store) on the bottom of that drive, and it sits on my desktop.
If you are getting FireWire 800 for performance and primary (not backup) storage, then it makes sense to pay extra for quality. I've never owned a G-Tech drive, but they seem to make good stuff, as do LaCie. So does OWC with their NewerTech brand (macsales.com), which I do own. I also have a Macally enclosure, and it has been solid. For FireWire, I tend to avoid companies that are not focused on Mac users. Some of them put extra Windows features their drives that seem to interfere with them working on reliably on Macs. Others, for some reason, cannot be used as a startup disk, even though FireWire has always been bootable (even on PowerPC Macs).

  • Are they worth it?

    All:
Is it really worth getting an Apple display (for $500+) over an NEC or ViewSonic for a significant amount less?
    Please discuss.
    Thanks!
    Max

Yes and no. Apple sells high end displays which means they are digital rather than analog (better color), they are brighter, they have faster response time (less smearing and ghosting in animation and movies), and have even lighting (no shadows or bright spots). Comparing an Apple display to LCD displays you find at discount houses and electronic stores is like comparing a BMW sports car to a Ford mini-compact.
Now when you compare the Apple displays to other high end professional displays you'll find that the prices are closer but the Apple displays are still more expensive. For example, Dell's 22" display is considerably less expensive than Apple's. If you put the two displays side by side you'll find that the Dell's picture quality is nearly as good as the Apple display but I could see differences that put the Apple display slightly ahead. So that leaves you considering things like ease of repair (should it be needed), support, and quality over lifetime. (Not to mention the esthetics of the Apple display vs the clunky plastic Dell).

  • Real-time Blacklist (RBL) Servers are they worth using?

Hi, are Real-time Blacklist (RBL) Servers worth using, and if so what's the best once to use?
    Thanks
    - Cameron

I agree with Joe. Using just Spamhaus is a pretty good approach. Spamhaus is reasonably conservative about blacklisting servers, so it is less likely that you will reject legitimate servers (which can happen with some more aggressive RBLs).
Also, if you are serious about this, download and carefully follow Pterobyte's "Frontline Defense for Mac OSX Server" <http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/38/62/>. By implementing his tutorial, you will be fine tuning your server so that it rejects about 70% - 80% of spam before it reaching your content filter. It increases the efficiency of your setup a great deal.

  • I have 20kb of damaged files on my old hard drive. Are they worth keeping, and if so, how would I go about repairing them?

I got rid of my old iMac G5 computer which ran on Tiger, but not before I retained the hard drive, which was installed into a 'caddy'.
There is a folder containing 20kb of damaged files. I wondered whether they were worth keeping, and if so, how do I go about repairing them?

    Hello Sapper,
Mostly they're garbage, text files would likely be the only "recoverable" ones, but...
