Ipod/itunes locking up during syncing

hi. i have an ipod video, and i had itunes 7 and it was working perfectly, until i plugged it into another computer to put a song onto it. i could still use the ipod, and i plugged it back into my home computer and used the program senuti to get the song that i had added from the other computer onto my home computer. this worked fine, and now i had the song i needed on my computer. i ejected the ipod and then plugged it back in. itunes launched like normal and began syncing, but then it stopped responding. i waited a while, and then force-quitted itunes. then i ejected my ipod from my computer and removed the cord, but i got the message "you have not removed the device properly" or something to that effect. now i have no songs on my ipod, but when i go into the about menu, it says that i have 20 gigs available rather than 27 or whatever it should be. now every time i plug in my ipod, itunes launches and starts syncing. however, at random points, itunes either stops responding or gives me a message that says that my ipod can't be read or written to. i updated to 7.1.1 or whatever the latest version is, and tried restoring my ipod, as well as the other 5rs, but it still doesn't want to work. i have no idea what to do now, as my ipod is out of warranty and all i can think of is that maybe the hardrive is damaged or something.
any help is appreciated, thanks, robert

Hi Joel,
I've noticed the same thing (I'd just come here to post about it when i saw your message).
maybe it's not been noticed much yet because i presume more people play music from their libraries than from a CD…
it's happened on 2 CDs for me so far, and on both - the first track plays fine and then iTunes just stops after a few seconds of the second track (in album order). If i double-click another track, iTunes plays another second of the second track (not the one i clicked on) and then becomes unresponsive.
The first CD this happened with then disappeared from the desktop and i had to restart to get my Mac to realise it still had a disc in its' drive!

my ipod touch accidentally disconnected during sync, after that it wont sync at all. although it appears to be syncing on both the computer and ipod, it rushes through "determining which tracks to sync' step and no changes are actually made.i restarted both and reset the ipod. i checked to see that the computer recognizes the ipod (yes) and tried to sync over wifi with the same result...(i am afraid to retore to factory original beacuse the problem is about transferring from th computer itunes to the ipod)

There is no good way for yur problem since iTunes sees the iPOd.  Yu can ry removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
However, I suspect a restor, first try from backup, is required.

  • ITunes is locking up during sync of iphone and ipad during backup

When I try to sync either my iPad or my iPhone 3GS, iTunes is locking up during the backup stage of the sync.  This started two days ago.

Thanks whatheck, that worked!  I confirm that my antivirus (ESET Smart Security) was interfeering:
I disabled ESET and synched - it worked!
Then I also backed it up manually, and that worked also (30 seconds).
Then I re-enabled Eset and backed up again... it still worked...
BUT then I Synched again, and it failed!  Had to kill iTunes and the applemobiledeviceservice with taskmgr.
So I turned off realtime file system protection in Eset, and after restarting iTunes (with 3gs still connected), Itunes said "Verifying PaulW's iPhone" for a couple minutes.
    - Then it synched fine (couple minutes at most - got a new podcast).
    - Then I backed up again manually which worked (10 seconds!).
    - Then I synched again, no problem.
Note that AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is still using 50% cpu when sitting there doing nothing, even with iphone not connected.  Have to kill it manually (in task manager - processes) or cpu fan runs constantly.
FYI: my ESET is a couple weeks out of date (subscription expired) will have to update it...

  • My iTunes keeps freezing during syncing and wont let me put any music on. What do I do?

I have a PC and the newest iPod touch. I was receiving error message -54 while syncing recently so i checked on this site and found out that some of my files could be locked. Sure enough I went through all of my files, found and deleted all the locked ones and wiped my itunes. I then kept getting a error message telling me that the sync session couldn't start. Then I wiped my ipod and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times. But each time I try to sync my ipod, itunes freezes and I have to restart the entire program. I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I have tried everything I could, and have had no luck. The program keeps freezing on me and doens't allow me to sync my ipod or my ipad, so it would seem to be a problem with my itunes but I don't know what to do, nevermind how to fix it.

You will lose all of the content on the ipod, but you will have to restore.  If you cannot then follw this:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

Figured I would cross post this to the Ipad community.
I have the 11.1 (126) Itunes on iMac connecting to one of my iPads that has IOS 7 on it.  I have tried connected (wired) and wireless Sync and Itunes locks up at the last step the checking for tracks to sync.

  • Ipod touch locks up when syncing

    Hello-
My Ipod touch syncs fine with Itunes 8.0.1.11 when syncing apps or playlists. As soon as I check "sync all music and playlists" Itunes locks up on me. Any ideas?

Sorry, I forgot to say that I also had downloaded the newest Iphone software package for the Ipod touch. This freezeing up issue was happening before that tough.

  • 2 error messages from ipod/itunes. Will not sync anything. HELP!

I JUST GOT MY NEW 3G 8GB RED IPOD NANO THIS MORNING AND AS SOON AS I PLUGGED IT IN, IT WONT SYNC. THE FIRST TIME I PLUGGED IT IN IT AUTOMATICALLY STARTED SYNCING MY MUSIC BUT I STOPPED IT BECUASE I WANTED TO MANUALLY PICK MY SONGS.
NOW EVERYTIME I HOOK THE IPOD UP AND TRY TO SYNC SONGS, VIDEOS, OR PHOTOS THE LIST OF EVENTS HAPPEN..
-PLUG IN IPOD AND WAIT FOR IT TO COME UP
-MESSAGE POPS UP AND SAYS "SONGS ON THE IPOD CANNOT BE SYNCED BECAUSE ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS SELECTED FOR SYNCING NO LONGER EXIST"
-CLICKS "OKAY" AND TRIES TO SYNC A FEW SONGS (OR ANYTHING ELSE) ON THERE ANYWAY
-ITUNES SAYS IT'S SYNCING AND KIND OF FREEZES FOR ABOUT 3 MIN. (TASK MANAGER SAYS STILL RESPONDING"
-"SYNCING" STOPS AND ERROR MESSAGE POPS UP AND SAYS "THE IPOD CANNOT BE SYNCED. THE REQUIRED DISC CANNOT BE FOUND."
I have no idea what to do, please help me.

*MESSAGE POPS UP AND SAYS "SONGS ON THE IPOD CANNOT BE SYNCED BECAUSE ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS SELECTED FOR SYNCING NO LONGER EXIST*
You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • ITunes locking up after sync,,,Please Help !!!

    Hi All-
I have recently switched my iTunes from my desktop to my laptop and i used the "shared" feature to transfer my podcasts from my desktop to my pc via the wireless network in my house. Since doing so.
I try to sync the iPod and what i get is the 3 steps to sync, it idintifies the iPod, backs up the iPod and then sync the iPod. nothing transfers with the 3rd (syncing) step.
My problem happens when I try to click on the podcasts tab along the top of the screen. I wish to select that my podcasts be able to sync, but when I click the podcast icon, the whole program freezes up, and does not respond.
    I have tried the following,,,,
Re-Installed iTunes, Shut off the pc and re start and re run iTunes and tried to sync again,,,but nothing works,
Please help me and let me know what mght help me get past this so I can select the items I wish to have sync with the iPod.
Thanks for your time and feel free to ask questions if you need further informsation.
    Sincerely- Doug

Why are you introducing issues instead of simply syncing to your desktop?
Turning on home sharing in iTunes does not copy media to other computers.
The media still resides on the system sharing the media, in your case that is your desk top.
Either sync with your desktop or on your laptop subscribe to the podcasts so that their files reside ON your laptop.

  • Itunes locking up when syncing phone

Since upgrading to the most recent version of itunes I've had a problem trying to sync my iphone 3g. The software is utd on the phone as well. As on as I plug the phone in itunes starts up, (auto sync is turned off) and about 15 seconds later itunes locks up and thats it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 3 times now with the same result. Each time I follow the multistage procedure of deleting the various itunes sections 1 at a time and then confirming the delete. The phone and itunes work fine separately. Together, not so much. Any thoughts?????

You have to uninstall iTunes 9.** and re-install 8.2.1.
Here is a link for your convenience (windows).

    Here is the mac version:

Hope this helps, I know it did for me. Let's just hope Apple will get off their A** and fix this problem soon.

  • Ipod turns off/resets during syncing!

When I plug my ipod in it takes 5 min. for it to show up in itunes, then when I sync error 1602 shows up along with some others and it stops the syncing. If this doesn't happen then while it is syncing new music and such my touch restarts and occasionally turns off.....what can I do about this. I haven't had a succesful sync since I got it two months ago!

Can you tell if it is turning off, or just pausing playback?  After it stops the music unexpectedly, if you press Play/Pause button, does it start playing again, or is it unresponsive (as it the power swtich is in the OFF position)?
If it does not start playing again by pressing Play/Pause, what do you need to do to get it to play again?
Do you use headpbones that have remote control buttons on the cord?
To rule out a problem with your headphone that is causing this problem, try using a difference set (any standard type), to see if the problem recurs.

  • Itunes locking up on sync

itunes holds up on syncing bookmarks but not music and apps?... any ideas?

turn off bookmark syncing in iTunes, apply, then turn on bookmark syncing, apply. Give that a go, that would be the first thing I'd try

  • 7th Gen iPod Classic was unplugged during sync, now it pops up in Windows Explorer, but not iTunes. How can I fix this?

    Okay.
I have a Windows 7 x32 OS, and an 80gb Silver 7th Gen iPod Classic.
So, I bought an iPod used off of eBay and I recently decided that 80gb was a bit too much, so I was going to resell it on eBay and buy a smaller iPod.
While I was restoring it to set it back to factory settings, my computer shut off due to a power problem.
Now when I plug it in, I get a message from windows saying "You need to format the disk in drive :M before you can use it. Do you want to format it?"
It shows up in windows explorer as a Removable Disk, and it isn't being detected by iTunes. I plug it in the iPod says "Connected. Eject before disconnecting." with a symbol that it makes when it is syncing.
I've tried putting it in disk mode, and it still will not detect it.
Can somebody help me? I really don't want to be stuck with a broken iPod.
If anyone needs or wants any more information before they can advise, please feel free to tell me what you need to know and I will post it!
Thanks, and have a blessed day.

    Hello b0nvivant,
Thank you for providing so much information about the iPod issue you are experiencing.  I found an article with steps to take when your iPod is recognized in Windows Explorer but not in iTunes:

  • ITunes started locking up during sync

Running Windows XP, and have been without any issues. Suddenly today, I can not complete a sync. After a couple of minutes, CPU usage goes to 100%, Task Manager says iTunes is Not Responding, and the phone just says "Sync In Progress". This is after it syncs contacts and calendars. I thought that it might be related to a long pod cast I was syncing, but I removed all my pod casts and it still happens. Any ideas? I'd call Apple support, but I know they'll just tell me to restore from backup, and that's just not going to happen. If I have to do that, I'll just toss the phone and get something that works.

    "Get something that works..."
Buy a mac and you wouldn't be having these issues..
Have you tried performing a selective startup on your Windows machine to see if its a third party service or startup item? ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275 )
Have you disabled/uninstalled your third party security software that can cause a plethora of system issues? ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125 )
Have you tried uninstalling iTunes completely from your computer and reinstalling according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 ?
Have you ruled out your content that you are syncing by attempting in a new user? And to take this even further, does it occur on another computer?
I would try these before you bash, saying that its the phone, while millions do not have the issue you are having..

  • I downloaded the latest itunes, now my 2nd gen ipod touch hangs up during sync process at backing up. Am I just out of luck? I've tried the uninstall/reinstall several times.  Thanks.

I understand it's "obsolete", so do I have any hope of continuing to use it or will I be forced to buy a later model?

Try running 'CMD' as Administrator    (CMD will get you to a DOS prompt)
Then type in  -->   Netsh Winsock Reset
Then reboot your computer and then try syncing...  this worked for me last night.
