IPod-iTunes Play Count Transfer

So here is the situation. When i listen to my songs on my iPod, which is a second generation iPod with the click wheel, 20G, I want to have the play count tally and transfer back into iTunes. Here is an example. I listen to Song A in iTunes on my G4 15 times. I leave my house, listen to Song A on my iPod 5 more times. When I return to my house and connect my iPod, i want the play count to be 20. If anyone knows how to make this work, please let me know. Thank you.

If the ipod is set to "Auto Update" all ratings you set for songs on the ipod are sent to iTunes

  • Why is iTunes play count not updating for SOME songs played on iPod Touch?

I have noticed that when I play some songs on my iPod the play count won't update. This only happens with some I bought recently. I was actually testing witha song I purchased 3 weeks ago and the play count will only update if I play it on the computer. However, when I played the song on my iPod Touch 4g running iOS 5, nothing happened. How can I fix this as I use the recently played playlist quite often. also, Im pretty sure most of the songs were downloaded from iTunes app in my iPod.

I've had this problem before with my 1G and still have it with my 2G. I can replicate it EVERY TIME.
If I listen to nothing but music on my iPod touch, and then go back home and sync, I have no problems with the playcount and smart playlists.
However, if I listen to a bunch of music, then play a few games, or browse Safari for a while, any record of my recently listened to music is wiped out. The Music application even loses my place in what song I was listening to and even which artist/album I was last listening to -- kicking me back to main music screen when I click the Music icon on the Home screen.
My hypothesis -- Apple is not using a dedicated/untouchable portion of memory to store playcounts. It is shared with all other memory access. So if an application or Safari uses a lot of memory during your session AFTER you've played your music, your playcounts gets wiped out in the process.
But that's just my take on the situation.

  • ITunes Play Count and Last Played not updating?

    Hi All,
I have an IPOD shuffle 1GB 2nd gen, I'm using the latest ITunes 7.7.1.11, I have Windows XP SP3 intalled. On Aug 14th for some reason that was the last time ITunes Play Count and Last Played columns updated in ITunes. I listen to and recharge my shuffle everyday. When I hook my IPOD to the base it is recognized and ITunes opens and says it's syncing, then after about 30 seconds it says sync is complete, ok to disconnect, the flashing orange light goes green & everything seems correct except those 2 columns don't get updated, does anyone know how to make ITunes start updating that information again?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Steve

    Hi Paul,
Just downloaded and installed iTunes 8.0. I played a few songs on my shuffle and synced it again, the problem remains the same, the last played & play count do not change. I wonder what happened on Aug 14th because thats the last time it worked.
    Thank you again,
    Steve

  • Manually Managed Ipod - Syncing Play Count with Itunes Library

I've had a 80gb 5th Generation Classic for 7 years or so, ive always manually managed it. Now that i've bought an iphone 5 with enough storage for my itunes library i want to transfer my music onto my new phone, so i don't need to carry round an ipod and iphone!
However my play counts in my library are all very low as i don't play music on my laptop too often.
Is there a way to get the play counts off my manually managed ipod on to my laptop to put on my phone? I would really like to continue my play counts from my ipod to my iphone.
    Much appreciated.

Hey, apologies for not getting back sooner, ive been working away.
I've just tried the script out and i appear to be having some issues.
When i script more than a handful of songs (15+ ish), i get the following error:
    Line: 136
    Char: 53
Error: The track is not modifiable
    Code: A0040203
    Source (null)
and consequently none of the stats are transferred over.
If i script in small batches i seem to be able to script and also focus in on the song that appears to be causing the issue, and the error pops up again when i only script the suspect song. However the stats also get scrpted over from the song. I then pick the next 10 songs or so and script and carry on. With over 7500 songs this is a long long exercise.
Do you know any reason for the above error, and is there anything to solve it?
I must point out im scripting from my iphone 5. My ipod was left at work so ill try that tomorrow night. The itunes version im using is the latest build, 11.0.0.163
    Cheers.

  • Do iTunes play counts cause update of iPod?

For example, when I play a song in iTunes, the next time I sync my iPod, does the play count change cause an update for the iPod?
I don't recall this happening before, back in the old days.
    Thanks,
    Joel

I am not sure if this is the way it's always been, but I remember it being this way since I started using the auto-update in iTunes 4.9. Playcount changes do cause and update of the iPod.

  • IPod touch - some songs played don't register on iTunes play count

    Hi there!
I know this might sound a bit anal, but I like keeping a check on how many times I have played my songs...and at the moment the only thing annoying me about the iPod touch is that some songs I have played don't increase their play count on iTunes when I sync...any ideas why this might be? I would appreciate any ideas!
    Thanks a lot!

So what is the difference between off and sleep, for us Touch noob's?
Does the top button turn it off or sleep? I know that turns off the screen while playing a song. And standby is when you just press pause and let the screen go off after one minute?
I tested the above play count thing, and it does only update for me the most recent set played. I love the play count myself...and now I don't have my morning commute sets counted, and the 5 hours straight of jazz I played on Saturday night!
This seems to be pretty basic stuff to me....it always worked with my shuffle and my nano.

  • Is there a way to restore an iPod's play count? It mysteriously disappeared

For some random reason, my iPod decided to erase the play count of all of the songs on my iPod...but it left other things, like Genre, Date Added, Last Played, Skip Count, etc. The Last Played column especially makes no sense because it'll say that I last played a particular song "12/4/2009 12:58PM" and have the play count as 0.
Is there any way to restore the play count? I'm particularly annoyed because I had a smart playlist that contained the top 30 most played songs on my iPod.
And I don't think my iTunes Library would be of any use; I've stopped using the iTunes Library to manage my music for quite some time now. I only use iTunes as a middle man for dragging and dropping my music onto my iPod (so obviously I don't use the syncing feature).

    Tyler:
First, start Task Manager. Kill iTunes.exe, iPodService.exe, and iTunesHelper.exe. Just select them and End Process on each one.
Next, use these instructions to put the iPod into forced disk mode: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Now, connect it to the computer. You should be able to recognize the iPod in this way.
If these instructions do not work, then something else is wrong, and whatever device locks up is where the problem is. Meaning that
-if the iPod won't go into Forced Disk Mode or comes out of Forced Disk mode, then the iPod has the problem and needs to be replaced (it's not fixable by you)
-if the computer locks up, then the computer probably needs to be formatted and have Windows reinstalled, since no Apple software is now running on the thing (you killed the only three pieces of Apple software that matter)
This is one of those things that is simply always true. There's no trickery involved, no way you can make it behave other than the way I've laid it out above. It's a simple matter of knowing how the stuff works.
So, I hope that helps you find the problem at least, if not to fix it. In forced disk mode, with no Apple software running, the iPod is just like any other external hard drive. Nothing special to it.

  • Itunes play count messed up.

I like to keep track of my itunes playcount and it is normally fine.
Lately, If I have got into a song and played it alot when I synch my ipod with itunes it shoots up the playcount to a ridiculous amount. For instance, a song just shot up to over 400 plays from around 40. I have played it alot...but no way that much. It has done it a few times now with songs I have played frequently within a few days. At first I thought I must have just under estimated the amount of plays but after this latest one there's no chance I have played it that much. Could it be anything to do with the face that I'm using my ipod speaker?
It's really strange and annoying me.

In lastfm, tools, options, ipod, do you have "always confirm ipod scrobbles" checked?
I thought itunes wouldn't increment play counts if music was manually managed, though.

  • My Itunes Play Counts Are Barely updating

I have an Ipod nano 7th generation, and I recently got a new laptop. I managed to move over the old library to the new laptop (after much work), and everything is fine. The only problem is that for some reason my Itunes won't update my play counts correctly. For example, I've played the song 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman' at least 20 times, but it is only listed as 13. Or other songs that I've played over 10 times are listed only as 7. I like using my play counts as a measure of how to choose from my favorite songs and such, so this problem kind of vexes me. Does anyone have an idea as to the problem and how it can be solved?

I cannot understand why sometimes the play count updates and sometimes it does not.
Yes, that is a long standing problem with iTunes.  See this thread from 2009.  It has not gotten any better since then.

  • ITunes play count too high

I just noticed this today (3/11) that four songs on iTunes have absurdly high play counts. One song has 861 plays, followed by three other songs with over 200 plays. These songs were downloaded from iTunes store, in the last 2 months (recent release music). At most, these songs had 20 plays. I am using iTunes 10.6 (40), on a late 2009 MacBook Pro running Lion. iTunes syncs music and apps only with an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1, and a 2006 version 80GB iPod. Considering that I am running new versions of iTunes and iOS, I suspect that the problem lies there. I must also add, that the iPhone was updated as a new or factory setting restore. Anybody else with this problem?

Maybe if update to 10.6.8, it might solve your problem. My counter works perfecly, I can clear it if need be and it starts from zero and counts accuratly

  • IPod song play count

How come playing a song on my iPhone doesn't seem to increase the song's play count when I look on iTunes? Is there any way to fix this?

It should, but you need to listen to the entire song all the way through until the iPod begins playing a new song for this to register.
As a test, I checked the play count and last played date and time for a song in a playlist in iTunes that I have selected to be transferred to my iPhone. I played the song on my iPhone all the way though until another song began to play.
I synced my iPhone with iTunes and the play count and the last played data and time was updated.

  • IPod touch play count dosnt work

ok my ipod touch doesnt update play counts. like i play though any song all the way throughand plug it in to the computer and it says is hasnt played at all. but when plugged in to the computer the play count works fine. any suggestions on how to get play count working on ipod too???

Play count is a sort of metadata that doesn't have a direct display implementation on the iPod (well it isn't data that is actually saved to the file, but instead stored as a preference in the library database ). It's there, you just can't see it! The exception is if you use smart playlists (see my comment below), where you can use logic to sort tracks by play count into distinct playlists.
With your iPod connected to your computer, playing in iTunes, you can choose to display play count in your track listing. Select View > View Options…, then check the Play Count checkbox.
You can build smart playlists based upon play count and last played, which is a very powerful and handy feature for those who prefer to manually manage their iPod content, allowing you to create dynamic playlists that propagate based on your listening preferences (such as "play only tracks I haven't heard in a while" or "play only newly added tracks I haven't heard yet"). Create a smart playlist in iTunes by holding down the option key and clicking on the create playlist button. This is the solution for new iPod users who complain that their iPod playing in shuffle mode keeps playing the same tracks.
The main problem is that iPod touch does not always properly keep track of play count, something that iPod classic excels at. It's like using a calculator that has an inconsistent math error -- how can you trust it?

  • ITunes play counts are wrong. How can this be fixed?

I like managining my play counts, since I use a couple of smart playlists based on playcounts. However, I have this issue that I can't honestly seem to find a resolution to online. I see users with this problem, but no resolutions. Whenever I have to sync my iphone to itunes, it ends up jumbling up my play counts for some reason.
Example: If I have song A, that I've played 5 times previously. I play it 3 times, then sync my iphone, it'd end up with 13 plays (5 plays previous, then 5 plays again, plus the three extra plays.) I'll have song B, with 0 plays. I play it twice, sync again, and get 0 plays for the song.
Can this be fixed? I want song A to have 8 plays in iTunes/iphone, and song B to have 2 plays. This does not make any sense. I'm confused. I've heard it started with iTunes 8, but I can't downgrade since my iphone is on the latest firmware.

What should be happening is that each time you sync the device the number of plays made on the device since the last sync are added into iTunes as a global record. This system should be able to accurately support multiple devices. Because smart playlists can use play count as a parameter the devices must record both the current "total" and "device" play counts.
The first suggested fix for anything a bit random like this is to restore the device in the hope that it will just go away.

  • Problem when syncing: won't update itunes play count/last played etc

My old 2g shuffle was capable of updating play count/last played and adding songs to the recently played playlist when synced to my itunes.
Seems my new 3g shuffle can't do this.
I remember the trick with the 2g was to make sure it was switched off first before connecting/syncing, but I've tried all sorts of different combo's with the 3g and nothing will make it update song stats in itunes.
How can I make it update my itunes?

Ok, cool, I figured it out:-) Just in case anyone ever has the same problem, here's a quick rundown:
Basically it's the same problem you can get with 2nd gen shuffles if you're manually managing songs. So I just unticked manually manage music in the device summary and got the shuffle to sync music from a playlist I created/dumped all the songs I wanted into.

  • ITunes play count

I'm wondering if there is a way to get the play-count of songs in iTunes just for a specific week? I don't want to reset my total play counts every week, but I also keep statistics about which songs I listen to every week. Hence, it would be highly useful to be able to see what I played in my iTunes, without having to write it down on paper every time I played a new song.
Is there a way to do this?

First - thanks for the confirmation. At least now I know that this can't be done, at least not at the present time. Perhaps I could hope that a "reset-able" play-counter, separate from the total play count, is something that might show up in later versions.
As for taking things too seriously...yes, maybe I am, but this is my idea of fun. I've done this for more than 10 years now, and being able to go back and see what I listened to at certain points in time is more fun than it is work. That, of course, doesn't stop me from wanting to simplify the task of counting songs
