IPod/iTunes problems on Windows XP

Now equiped with 5G iPods, my wife and I tried putting our photo album onto them. We have separate Windows XP logins.
Problem 1: Using the same photo directory was impossible: the "iPod Photo Cache" that is created there is write-protected against users other than the creator. Couldn't it be made shareable, or else created elsewhere than in the shared photo directory root (as is the iTunes music library)?
Problem 2: All our music files are on an external USB hard drive. Up until now, this drive did not need to be connected for me to sync the iPod with the podcasts in my music directory. It would just claim it couldn't find the disconnected files. I decided (given problem 1) to put a copy of our photos on the external drive too. When I tried sync'ing without the drive attached, iTunes got stuck in a busy-loop, using up all the CPU of the machine. I had to kill the process. I copied the photos back to the PC's internal disk, attached the external drive, reconfigured to point to the internal drive and sync'ed. All OK. Then I sync'ed without the external drive being there: looping again!
Problem 3: Windows XP has a much too simplistic approach to assigning drive letters. Even if you use the Computer Management -> Disk Management tool (accessible via the Control Panel's Administrative Tools) to assign a particular drive letter to an external drive, Windows is only too happy using that letter for another, non-assigned drive. Unfortunately, I loaded my songs into the iTunes library when the external drive was labelled G, the first free drive letter on my machine. Short of deleting the library and starting again (something I don't want to do), there is no way I can see to repoint the library references as a group (you can do it file-by-file, but that's incredibly slow and frustrating for even a single directory/album; forget a collection of 6000 songs!). Can this be scripted in some way on XP?
Thanks for any help/suggestions/fixes to iTunes!
Sony VAIO VGN-A190   Windows XP

I have no idea. It is not listed in any App articles and a Google search did not even find a hit for the error number.
All I can suggest is:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

  • [iPod 5G] Problems with Windows' iTunes keeping it synced.

I've been struggling to get my iPod 5G working on my windows computer. This is what happens EVERY time:
    - I connect my iPod, it gives me "Cannot read the content of the iPod XXX...."
    - I Restore my iPod (have also formatted it completely several times).
    - the iPod shows up in iTunes and it syncs.
    - I take the iPod out and i reconnect and it starts all over again and i get: "Cannot read the content of the iPod..."
Connecting the iPod to my MacBook will make it appear in iTunes and I'll be able to see the music and update it.
Things i've tried (in semi-random order, except for the last one):
    - Updated the iPod (1.2.1)
    - Restored the iPod about 10x
    - Different USB port and different iPod connection cable
    - Erased the iPod (3x): using Windows' format tool 1x and the Disk Utility in OS X 2x.
    - Uninstalled iTunes, Reinstalled.
    - Fresh install of Windows XP.
Could this be an iPod related problem? (it seems to work fine on my Mac)
Could this be an iTunes 7 related problem?
The iPod is brand-new, i got it after my old one had gotten a white screen that wouldn't go away. Could it be a faulty iPod they gave me?
P.S. Please don't suggest to 'just sync it with your mac' because it should work with the Windows computer that holds all my music.

    hi chris
    the difference is:
at home i've started it and it has been running 12 hrs without touching it
outside i've used it while running through the park five times, so i started and stopped it five times without touching it otherwise (didn't change songs)
do these five times starting/stopping waste 8,5 hrs battery runtime?

  • Itunes problem with windows Vista

ok i bought my touchsmart tx2 1025 with windows vista ultimate 64 bit and well i ve noticed that ..well since this is my third time i exchange this computer and i noticed there was a problem with the speakers when i was playing music that anytime during a song i would get this distorted sound like when u put a lot of volume in ipod headphones that it sounds like a crack. Well that happened in my computer even with low volumes.
However I played two times the same song on itunes and two times on windows media player.
Every single time on itunes the sound came as if the speakers were about to blow... like a crack..
Every single time on Windows media player it never sounded like that.
So i am pretty sure its an itunes problem. Does anyone know how to fix this.. i would rather use itunes than windows media player but i really hate the sound it makes sometimes because it shows about 2 to 3 times during one song.

It's possible that the song your playing does indeed have a little audio distortion in it, some media players are capable of filtering it out in a silent way, others play a beep, hence with one song I have, if i play it in windows media player it goes on and then for a split second theres a beep, iTunes doesent seem to do it, so instead of filtering out the missing data, it plays it.
This is more likley a problem with the song than iTunes

  • Itunes problems with windows 7 64 bit

Hi, i have searched and searched for a solution to my on going problems with itunes on my windows 7 64bit computer.
it started with my backups not being saved when i sync, then any music i add seems to play strangely i.e skips and plays the start of the song in the middle.
updating last sunday to the new iphone os (4.3) was also a disaster, having to try a number of times over 2-3 days as the downloads just seemed to hang and not do anything. At the end on around my 10th try it downloaded and updated in around 15 mins.
I now find myself when i connect to itunes more often than not having to manually delete corupt backups until i get a succesful one as sometimes it works and other times it doesnt.
I tryed a vista computer a friend has and everything worked perfectly!
    songs, backups the lot!!
So it clearly seems like a problems between windows 7 64bit and iphone 4.
can anyone please shed some light on these issues??????
    Many thanks, gaggie...

I am not sure that I can help with this, but I have seen an instance where continuous backup software cased playback problems.
Also are you using any Norton products?

  • IPOD+ITUNES problem, please help

Before I loaded the new version of itunes, I could plug in my ipod and drag and drop things from my itunes library into my ipod. After loading the new version I can no longer drag and drop songs from itunes to my ipod, and i cannot select individual songs on my ipod in itunes. All the songs on the ipod are grayed out. I cannot play any music on my ipod thru itunes. I have tried reinstalling and resetting everything. Please help

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • IPOD CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP VIA USB 2.0

    Enough is enough.
I have an ipod touch and I am having difficulty connecting it to my pc via usb 2.0.
I have searched the entire web and came across many cases similar or the same as mine. It's time for apple to face the fact that there is something wrong with either the apple mobile service or the apple usb drivers or the itunes software that causes connectivity problems with win xp.
For the record my case is this:
I got my itouch 3 days ago. I installed itunes 8.0. Then I plugged in my ipod to a usb extension cable port connected to a usb at the back of my desktop computer. At first I got the "this usb device can perform faster if you plug it to a usb 2.0 port etc." message. So I did. I removed the extension cable and connected it directly to one of the usb ports at the back. The first time it synchronized, it seemed fine. So I decided before I do anything with it, to update it to the 2.1 version. I made my account and bought (very bad policy there apple, it should be free or at least cheeper than 8 euro) the 2.1 update. I clicked to update the i-touch. While it was updating it crashed during the restore process (because it was disconnected but I didn't know that at the time). I unplugged it, resetted and plugged it back and managed to continue the restoring process until it was updated. After figuring out itunes I chose the "manage files manually option", kept everything unchecked in the sync options except the applications. I noticed there were random disconnections here and there but I didn't pay much attention because they weren't very frequent.
The next day I plug in the touch again and suddenly I hear that annoying "connecting-disconnecting" sound from windows while my touch kept disappearing and reappearing in itunes. Suddenly my playlists disappeared from the touch. Nothing was in the touch any more. How could that happen since i had chosen to manage my files manually instead of synchronizing? So I unplugged the touch again, restarted the touch, restarted the pc, stopped and restarted the apple mobile service, unistalled and reinstalled itunes, searched microsoft support and read many usb troubleshooting documents in the web. Nothing happened. The touch randomly keeps disconnecting from the usb. I eventually managed to put my stuff back in and keep them there.
    Here's what I know:
    1) There is nothing wrong with my usb ports. I don't use usb hubs, they are usb 2.0, the voltage (500mA) is correct in the device manager. Everything else works fine there.
    2) The ipod touch does not support disk mode so you can't see it under "my computer" and this is not a problem.
3)There is nothing wrong with the ipod, it works perfectly.
    4) This is not a usb cable physical problem.
    5) The five R's are irrelevant with this situation.
Uninstalling and reinstalling itunes doesn't solve the problem, neither does hard resetting the ipod.
    6) Older PC configurations seem to be more affected by this but it doesn't have to do with unsupported specific chipsets.
    Here's what needs investigating:
    1) There may be a problem with the apple mobile service running on win XP.
    2) There may be a problem with the apple usb driver and win XP or older motherboards.
    3) There may be a 2.1 firmware issue with usb 2.0 connectivity.
Workaround so you don't go nuts:
Use USB 1.1 instead of 2.0. It is A LOT slower but it keeps the connection stable and you can work with the ipod. Just start copying and go do something else for the next hour. So far it works for me.
This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. I've stumbled across forum discussions dating to 2005 with this problem (with older ipods of course).

I think this needs to be put down to the eternal PC/Mac argument. Apple dont want to fix this as they want everyone to buy a Mac. Its a business, understandable, but in turning away PC buyers they alienate a huge percentage of the market.
Now, I had my first iTouch stolen. It synced, for the most part, very well, just occasionally it removed settings and music, but ticking boxes each time I sync'd sorted that, Its a workflow procedure.
SO, now that my Touch has been replaced, iTunes cannot see it. The PC can identify it on USB1 or USB2, My work lap top can see it and has indeed upgraded it to V2 software, just in case that was the issue, but no. For some really weird reason Itunes on my desktop cannot see the new pod.
This does not make sense with the argument that Apple software doesnt work on a PC, but doesnt help that none of the Apple support staff, phone or in-store have a clue about Windows operations.
Because my Touch has now been trying to connect to 6 separate installs of itunes, multiple USB ports, multiple USB cables, a complete overhaul of the registry settings (everything else still works), and the loss of all my previous settings and backups from the last Touch... but still, the PC says its an ipod but cant install it, iTunes sits there, dumb.
The only thing I can do now is sell the device as brand new as it has never had music on it and is just a week old...
It has changed the MiniMac I was going to have for my new flat screen TV into a PC and suggests that anyone with a PC should stick to devices that run on PC, of which there are many, just without the user interface of the dear departed IPod Touch.
    Thanks

  • Solution for some iPod/iTunes problems...

If you are having one or more of the following problems, Windows may be confusing iPod with a network drive or hard drive and may exhibit strange behavior, like:
-iPod does not show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer
-iPod does not show up as disk in Windows Explorer (even though disk mode in enabled ont he iPod).
-iTunes and Windows Explorer report the wrong amount of available space on the iPod.
-No songs appear on the iPod after an apprently successful update from iTunes.
-Music copied to mapped network drive instead of iPod.
-The iPod setup assistant appears in iTunes everytime the iPod is connected.
-iTunes displays the "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode- use iTunes to restore" message even after the iPod has been restored.
-The wrong iPod name displays in the iTunes source list.
Please note*changing the iPod drive letter may not affect what letter theiPod uses on subsequent connections, so its not the best long-term solution unless you want to change this everytime you have issues.
    To change the drive letter:
    -Open Control Panel in Windows
    -Go to Administrative Tools
    -Go to Computer Management
    -Go to Disk Management
-Locate theiPod and right click on it, then click Change drive letter and paths.
-Use the drop-down box to select a new drive letter. Make sure to use a drive letter that is not already assigned to a network drive. The drop-down menu will display all letters that are not assigned to a physical drive, but network drives will stil be listed so be careful. If you arent sure, add a new drive and pick your own letter, something way down the list is best since common drives are A, B, C, D, etc.
    -click OK
-Click yes on the confirmation box
    -Restart computer
Good luck!!! It worked for me!!!

Honestly, I don't know!! I searched ITunes and IE7 and saw that others were having the same problem I was and that if they stopped using IE7 Itunes started working again.
Basically, I was just proud of dumping Internet Explorer! See, I really love Macs. I had an ibook that finally conked out and i couldn't afford another mac.

  • Can anyone help me fix my iPod/iTunes problem?

I have an iPod Touch Gen 3 with iOS 5.1.1.  I'm running Windows 8 (which is probably my first problem) and iTunes 11 or whatever the latest one is.  For whatever reason, whenever I add a song from my laptop to my iPod, the song: A) either skips, only plays the first couple of seconds and then goes on to the next song, or doesn't play at all and goes on to the next song, and B) has heavily pixelated and distorted artwork.  I originally thought that it was my old iPod screwing up, which is two years old and semi-broken, so I assumed it was just ready to die.  I've deleted and reinstalled my iTunes, but that didn't help.  I'm going to run a security scan soon to see if there's anything wrong with the iTunes files.  If anyone has had this happen and knows how to fix, or if anyone has an idea to give me a direction to go, please help me out.

    Troubleshooting songs that skip
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Converting QuickTime Videos For iPod, iTunes Crashes on Windows

I was trying to convert some Quick Time movies (RvB Seasons 1-3) for my iPod, this is not my first time doing this but this is the first time I am having this problem. One day I open iTunes and try to convert these movies, like 10 seconds later the windows thing comes up and says “iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close” in the technical stuff it gave me it pointed to quicktimeessentials.qtx as the problem. So I searched for this file and deleted it Problem Solved! Or at least I though so when iTunes was able to convert my videos but now no Quick Time video will play right, so then I put the Quick Time file back where it was supposed to be, I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing. hiya!
I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing.
just checking. is it currently crashing with that message when you try to launch itunes, or just when you try to convert those videos?
if it's just when you convert those videos, let's check to see if it's a problem with every file, or just the ones you have at the moment. will itunes crash if you try converting the sample file from this document?

  • Will iPod & iTunes work with Windows Me?

I will be a first time buyer and was wondering...I know Me is archaic, but will it be able to work with the iPod and iTunes and let me be able to download anything and everything i would want? including videos and podcasts even though i can't run Quicktime with Me?

You must have Windows 2000 w/service pack 4 or XP w/service pack 2. Also it works with Vista (some have said they had problems...I have not). There are a lot of things that do not work with ME which is why ME had a short life (as far as being pushed on PC's or even pushed for individual upgrade sales). You will not be able to use iTunes on ME (as far as I am aware)....at least not iTunes 7 or later....which you will need for the 2nd gen nano. So you will not be able to download songs. As far as downloading from your PC to iPod without using iTunes....do a google search for the programs that sync iPods (Real Rhapsody is one I believe). You will not be able to update firmware or restore iPod if you run into any problems though without iTunes.
Take a look at the following...it was updated on 05-07-2007

  • Itunes problem on windows 8.1?

I recently downloaded Itunes because i like look and how I can easily arrange my music in it. Problem is when I go to ---> get info ---> and i want to rename album or add photo it doesn't update when i press ok

See HT203206: iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Itunes problem with Windows 7 and iphone

I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate released last week.
    Also I installed Itues 9.0.2.25.
Today I got a really wierd problem.
    1. My phone was not being charged any way (power or itunes).
    2. Then when I tried to sync my contacts through outlook, it was 6 hours and mu iphone was just keep on syncing. Itunes showed I am using some 180MB space for contacts but my contacts list was empty on phone.
I had to take the phone back to the store and then all of a sudden it just synced withing 10 minutes.
I would say, by trying to restore to factory settings through itunes and then re-syncing the phone probably worked.
But this is really a problem and probably of itunes.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes forums.
    Regards.

  • Major ipod/itunes problem

I've read many threads and tried many things to help me, including the 5 Rs, loading ipod in disk mode, diagnostic mode, reinstalling itunes, clearing out the temp file, clearing out previous itunes installers, and more.
Background: I used to have an ipod but it was stolen, so for my vacation i'm borrowing my girlfriends. Previous to these events her ipod would freeze every so often. Not a big deal though.
I plugged the ipod into my computer, and synced my music it deleted hers and when I got back to my computer it had stopped because one of my songs could not be found or something. So I hit okay.
Problem: Itunes functions normally when the ipod is not plugged in. As soon as I do, it takes about 5x longer to open itunes, I get the autoplay message. When Itunes opens the ipod isn't showed in the status menu, later minutes it will be 'IPOD' and I get the "Ipod is corrupted please restore" message. After the restore is done, it freezes when it restarts at the apple screen. It does that almost any time it restarts. (Yes i've tried doing it in disk mode). Also when I try to right click on the "Removable disk" in My Computer it freezes my computer. Also makes the infamous ticking noise.

Um i was listening to my ipod when my headphones came out then my screen froze and it hasnt unfroze its been like 30 minutes and my family doesnt know anything about ipods what do i do?
