Start here.  Is ti normal and expected for the computer to also see the iPod as a comera since that is how you get saved photos from the iPod to the computer.

  • IPod not showing up in iTunes source list

    Hi,
My fifth gen iPod is not showing up in the iTunes source list. I've tried the troubleshooting recommendations (unistall and then reinstall iTunes, delete the iPod/bin file and then update iPod software, etc.) The only one I have not tried is restoring the iPod to factory settings because that would erase the entire contents and since I can't see it in iTunes I couldn't add them back in.
Does anyone know what I can do to get the iPod to show up in the iTunes source list?
    Thanks

Hi. I'm not sure I'm using this discussion form correctly. Anyway, I'm on an iBook. OSX 10.2.8 and recently purchased a fifth gen ipod. connected everything just fine and have been importing some CDs to itunes and updating songs on the ipod for a couple of days. Listening to music, the whole deal.
today, was trying to eject my ipod and computer froze. Restarted my computer and everything is gone from my ipod. Started the procedure of updating the ipod to reload the songs (still in itunes library) and realized that ipod is not showing up in my itunes source list.
Did the 5 Rs. Haven't reinstalled software cause not sure how.
    Any help?
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First try resetting your iPod again (several times
may be needed). Connect it to your computer, and see
    what happens.
If your iPod appears in "My Computer", then have you
tried out all the suggestions in this article?:
iPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes
In your case, you'll probably need to assign your
iPod a different drive letter (because your computer
may be recognizing the iPod as a network device).
If your iPod doesn't appear in "My Computer" however,
then try the following. If it already does, then
assign it a different letter following the
    instructions further below.
I'm presuming that you've read through all the
suggestions in this article below, correct?:
iPod doesn't appear in Windows or in
    iTunes
Restoring may be worth it, by the way, because
restoring formats your iPod to your computer, so it
may be recognized after doing this.
Have you tried the Five R's?
    The
    Five R's
If there are other hardware devices that are
connected to your computer's USB ports (printers,
camera), then try disconnecting them, resetting your
iPod, and connect your iPod to your computer once
    more.
Try getting your computer to recognize your iPod by
also: operating in manual disk mode:
Putting your iPod into disk mode
Assigning your iPod a different drive letter
Now, see if your iPod is recognized by Control Panel,
and try assigning it a different drive letter:
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if
you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on
the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left
    panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel
windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
    5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a
few moments when it gets recognized in this drive
window), and click on "Change Drive letter and
    Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like
    (further along in the alphabet).

  • Keeping Ipod Icon in iTunes source list when Ipod is disconnected

My shuffle icon used to stay in the iTunes source list even when it was disconnected, which was really nice to make changes and then connect the ipod to update all at once, but it has disappeared. I have done some searching and can't find the answer. Any help would be great, thanks!

    Anthony,
Only shuffles have this "feature"...since regular iPods can sync against any number of selected playlists, one really doesn't need this capability as it less powerful than what is provided.

  • IPod won't post in iTunes source list; cannot transfer songs.

I connected my iPod to my Mac G5 but the iPod icon did not appear in the iTunes source list as expected. There was also a button for ejecting the iPod after transfer. In the past this procedure prompted an auto transfer of my current music library/play lists from iTunes to iPod.
I got some sort of "overload" message upon plugging in the iPod, had to force quit. Got a recharge anyway.
Tried another plug-in: "Do not disconnect" message on iPod screen. iPod still not appearing in iTunes source list.
(Nothing wrong with my 2004 purchased iPod 20GB; works fine.)
I suspect that the iTune update downloads I accepted are to blame. Maybe the newer iTunes version does not recognize my 2004 iPod.
I tried reinstalling iTunes and was prompted to update/restore my iPod to factory settings, which involves clearing its song contents. I am not inclined to do that because as it is, I cannot transfer music from iTunes to iPod.
Please advise if you know how to resolve this issue. Thank you.

Have you tried quitting iTunes, then connecting your iPod? If iTunes then launches, and the iPod doesn't appear in your Source column, can you open prefs and change anything for the iPod's settings (which you can only do if the iPod's connected)? I'm wondering if you've got Enable Disk Use turned on - that sometimes can interfere with iTunes accessing and syncing. Were you able to connect your iPod successfully to any other Mac?

  • Shuffle does not appear in itunes source list

I attach shuffle to usb port in a brand new imac g5. i say "no" when asked if i want to change link to itunes library and replace all existing songs to those on my new my new computer(i dont want to lose songs on shuffle).
After that, nothing happens...shuffle not in itunes source list, desktop or ipod updater.
    any suggestions ?

The Shuffle can only be linked to one computer at a time if you want to use the Shuffle on a different computer you must allow Itunes to restore the Shuffle and than you can use it. Sorry there's really no good way around this besides going third party.

  • Who is Juan Tapia&how do I get him off my iTunes source list

I recently purchased an iPod mini, and have installed the accompanying iTunes software.
In the source list of iTunes I have an entry called "Jan Tapia's Limewire Tunes". I can find no explanation of this in the help files. I wonder if I received a previously owned iPod in my new package. There is no music listed in Juan's Tunes list, and I'd like to get rid of it.
Has anyone seen this? Any idea how I get this entry out of the iTunes Source List (list which includes Library, podcasts, Videos, Party Shuffle, etc...)?

  • Can't update/restore after intalling itunes 7.0  or see ipod in source list

I have a complicated issue. I just installed itunes 7.0 and my ipod won't show up in the source list (which had been a problem before with 6.0). Thinking this had to do with my Toshiba laptop, I disabled my high-speed usb port. But one of the later steps (to fix the toshiba problem) is to open the ipod updater and then restore the ipod. I can't do either of these because for some reason my updater is the 6.0 version still and gives me an error saying it's no longer supported and i have to use itunes to update (which I can't). I don't know what to do! I need help!

    Hey there
I had issues trying to update my ipod (60g) after upgrading to itunes 7. Finally figured it out!!! I had to disable my Norton internet security - firewall and everything worked fine!!! It took maybe 10-15 mins to update the ipod to version 1.2 - then another 30 minutes to upload all my podcasts. I have no idea why it uploaded each one. Almost like during the update to version 1.2 - my podcasts (only the podcasts) were deleted and then reloaded again. Weird!!!
SO... hopefully you have a firewall that you can disable for about maybe 30 mins - just enough time to let the ipod update then you should be good. took me 4 friggin days to figure this one out!!!!
    Hope this helps!!

  • Ipod disappears from itunes source list after installing update 1.0.2

i plugged in nano to install more music. itunes asked if i wanted to install update 1.0.2 on my ipod, i clicked ok, and it installed. But the ipod never restarted or reappeared in source list or windows device manager (except briefly in devices when connected screen on ipod appears - but clicking stop just produced an error message that there was nothing to stop). it just cycled on ipod screen through apple logo, main screen and connected. ipod works fine otherwise. tried resetting ipod, restarting pc, different usb (although the original works fine when recharging son's mp3), reinstalling itunes - all no go. can't restore ipod as not registering on itunes or pc. any ideas before i grapple with apple phone support?

    All,
I've seen this one more times than I care to. At first, I thought I had a bogus unit. After replacing the first one, hooked up with a knowledgeable in-store associate who helped me part of the way.
Leodis' assessment of the update is correct. Apple needs to resolve the download portion of this update. It appears that the music, videos, and other content are downloaded, but the unit is left in an invalid state, causing it to cycle endlessly with the startup screen (Apple logo).
In the short term, the best advice is to NOT download the update.
If you are stuck with a unit still in this undesirable state, relax. There is hope.
First you need to disconnect your unit, and reset it. First slide the lock button back and forth (from lock to unlocked). Next press Menu and select (middle button) at same time, waiting for Apple logo to reappear (or disappear). Next press the Pause/Play button along with select button. This will take your unit to "disk mode". At this time, the screen should show a check mark and a message indicating it is ok to disconnect.
Before you reconnect the unit, it might be best to remove the iTunes software from your machine (using Add/Remove programs). I had to do this in order to get the software back to an "original" state. Basically, getting back to a point where you will be asked/prompted for updating the iPod software (of course, you will refuse this). Don't worry about your music, videos, etc. All of that library information should still be there in the original location (not the iTunes library location). You could also export the library, then re-import it later.
Now you can re-connect your unit up with your machine. Wait until it is recognized by your system.
Next go into "My computer" folder, you should see the unit there. You will want to right click the icon, and chose "format". This will re-format the internal flash hard-drive. Don't worry. It will not do anything to the ROM containing the bootstrapping software. Basically, you can't hose up this product, short of taking a hammer to it (which maybe by this point you might have contemplated that! )
After the re-format, you want to install iTunes again. Go thru the same motions as before. Bu this time, it will pop up a panel indicating that the unit is in themiddle of a restoration. That's ok. Click ok. Then, once the unit is recognized by iTunes (appears in left panel), select the unit, and go to Summary tab. On that page, you want to click on "Restore" button to restore back to factory settings.
During this restore, at some point, you will be prompted for that iPod update. Refuse it!! Don't do it. That's where we all got hosed.
After the restore is complete, your unit will be functional again.
At this point, go on your merry way and reload your media content back into the local library and then sync to your unit. This is also a good point to import your saved library info, if you exported it.
    Enjoy the nano!!!
Sorry this is a long post. Unfortunately, it took a few days to figure this out. But at least it is possible to avoid the issue. I've verified these steps on both WinXP (home edition) and WinXP Pro.

  • Finding "iPod" on the iTunes Source list

Sometimes when I view the Source list on iTunes (at the left of the entry screen) I see IPod and I can drag tunes from the iTunes Library to the iPod. But other times I do not see the "iPod" entry on the list. Often (maybe always?) if I disconnect the iPod from the pc, the "iPod" listing returns. _
Why is that happening? Surely there must be a better way to restore the "i{pd" listing than disconnecting and reconnecting the cable? Help. please.

  • ITunes won't put Ipod in source list

The Ipod says 'Connected' when I plug it in
    It's fully charged
    I just loaded iTunes 9.0.2.25
There's no source list in iTunes, so no Ipod to select
Ipod does not show up on Windows Explorer
Ipod appears to be in disk mode - Settings -> About -> 3rd screen to right shows serial number
Ipod does show up in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Disk Drives -> Apple iPod USB Device
Computer 'dings' when I plug the Ipod in, and I can 'eject' it from the eject devices safely icon on the toolbar. It shows up as Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device.
What do I need to do to get the iPod to show up in iTunes?

I like beating my head against a wall and so kept looking into this. Finally found a post on CNET, related to SP 2 - you can't have something mapped to the drive after your last hard wired drive. iTunes or the iPod has to use that drive location. I had a network directory mapped to my E: drive, right after the DVD/CD drive of my laptop at D:. I moved that network directory to the end of all my mapped network directory drives to free up E:, connected up my iPod and voila!, there's my iPod in iTunes. The iPod synced right up and came alive.
I started this Friday night - it's Sunday night now. Just like an emergency room - never have an accident on a weekend - you won't get any help other than that you can give yourself.

  • Disconnected iPod remains in iTunes sourc list

This happens with both my 4G nano and my 40GB 4G iPods. Sometimes, removing the iPod after sync leaves the iPod in the source list. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, just a bit odd.
    Ideas?
