Ipod keeps needing to be restored

I haven't been able to synch my ipod to my computer since itunes version 7.6. Every time I connect my ipod to my computer it says that itunes detects an ipod in recovery mode and the ipod should be restored. But once I restore, itunes just keeps saying it detects an ipod in recovery mode again. I can't get rid of this message and now my ipod won't synch.
Anyone have any solutions?????

*Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
And if that still doesn't help try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from restoring it.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. Complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
*Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

If you weren't able to sync the purchases to a computer previously and now your iPod needs to be restored so you can't sync it now, then you may be out of luck and will need to purchase your content again. Officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
    Good luck.

  • My ipod keeps telling me to restore it

My iPod keeps telling me to restore it from the computer. When I restore it from the computer it will turn off, and go through the restore process then the same white screen pops up saying "Please restore iPod from computer" I'll get on the computer it says it dectects a ipod in recovery mode. I have restored it 5 times and the same thing keeps popping up. does anyone know whats wrong?

Try this (and ignore the troll).
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

  • Ipod keeps asking me to restore over and over after updating ITunes

I opened ITunes to add some new songs, and it told me to update the latest version of ITunes, which I did, and then it told me my IPod was corrupted, and I should restore it, which I did, and now I am in that loop where it keeps telling me to restore the software. I cannot get the songs back onto my IPod. I even tried the part of changing the drive letter, and that still didn't solve my problem.
After the restore, the IPod looks okay, but whenever I plug it in to upload the songs, I get that restore error again. I see this problem over and over again, so it appears as though others are having the same problem. Can anybody help?

Can't help remembering those infamous Apple commercials where the PC guy is ridiculed. Anyway, I'll give the same model 5G/30GB one more chance. The one I got was white; maybe the blacks are better.
The fact is, these devices are indeed jammed with sensitive technology. An actual spinning hard disk that doesn't do well under vibrations or shocks, and the extra battery juice it needs are not to be ignored. I never understood why anybody would want to watch moving images on a 2-in screen to begin with. I tried to no avail to convince my son to go for iPod Nano thinking it'd be more stable with its flash memory technology (I assume that's what Nanos have). The price difference didn't make sense, and I gave in. But now, I sort of think maybe it does. Anybody with experience to put in a good word for Nano as opposed to 5G Video?

  • Ipod says needs to be restored, but when plugged into pc, goes straight to disk mode

so this is my friend's ipod classic [[used to be mine]] and it dropped and hit the ground from like a few inches, apparently. when it's not plugged in and i turn it on, it gives the ipod needs to be restored screen. I plug it into my computer and it goes straight into disk mode. i can 'eject' the 'disk' and then it shows up in itunes, and i go through the motions to restore the device. only, once it starts restoring, i get error 1439 and it boots out. If I reset the ipof [[menu and center buttons]] it just goes back to disk mode.... help! i really wanna fix it....
i've tried: reseting ipod, plugging ipod into a different usb port, updating itunes....

I think that impact has jarred your Hardisk.
Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix you problem, but help in troubleshooting.

I got an 80GB iPod Classic for my son for Christmas. Every time it needs to be charged (I think he runs out the battery), I plug it in and it needs to be restored. I don't know if it's because he ran the battery all the way out, or if there is something wrong with it?

  • 2nd iphone 4 in a row that keeps needing to be restored everyday?

    Ok,
2 weeks ago my iphone 4 started acting funny.  Everyday for whatever reason i would lose service and then it would say "connect to itunes " and I would have to restore the phone to its original factory settings.  this went on for 3 days until finally it refused to be restored through itunes, and it was now not reading my sim card.  so i went and got a new sim card at ATT , didn't solve the problem. So  I took it to the apple store, they determined that it couldn't be restored and they gave me a replacment unit.  well a few days later , the same thing has been happening .  This is a completly different phone , and every 24 hours it needs to be restored.  what is going on ? why is this happening .

ok , so went to the apple store, they were able to restore the 2nd iphone back to factory settings, but they had to do something special or something to get it to work.  we then set it up as a new phone, and guess what ? a day later same thing happened, and it happened after the phone had been restored and i hadn't synced it with any device yet.  ok , explain that one to me. presently it gets stuck "restoring iphone firmware"  and gets stuck doing that .  i don't want to drive to the stupid apple store for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. ARRRGH !!! this is ********

  • HT201210 my iphone keeps needing to be restored

My iphone over the past month and a half is constantly needing to be restored. Sometimes it can be weeks apart and other times it can be more than once in a day. My phone will usually lose network service before coming up with the 'activation required' screen, when I then unlock the phone it shows the screen requiring you to connect the phone to itunes. Is there anything that I can do to resole this issue??? I have oviously restored it many times and all of my itunes and iphome software is up to date.

The nearest Apple Store is three hours away. Asking if anyone else has any suggestions? It also doesn't seem to be going into recovery mode anymore and is just doing the restore needed thing every few hours.

  • Used 2nd Gen. Nano keeps needing to be restored

I have the latest version of iTunes as of this morning.
I purchased a used 2nd generation Nano and when I plugged it in the only option that was available to me was the "Summary" tab in iTunes. I wasn't able to upload songs or change any settings. So I Restored the Nano, relaunched iTunes and now I am in a continuous cycle of it saying that "it has detected it in recovery mode and that it needs to be restored before it can be used."
How can I reformat this and restore it's functionality?
    Thanks in Advance:)

  • HT201263 My ipod keeps getting stuck while restoring. There has been no progress on the progress bar even after hours of waiting. Help!

My ipod touch is having trouble restoring. Ive followed all the steps that have been suggested for restoring trouble shooting.
I have the latest itunes, tried restoring it on different computers, but it always seems to get stuck when itunes is restoring the ipod.
The apple icon shows up with the progress bar, but hours later there is still no progress and change in the status. Itunes says waiting for ipod and nothing changes. Im frustrated that nothing seems to help. I really just want to restore it to factory settings so it can work again, I dont even care anymore whether i get any of my old music or photos back. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? Or know how long it should take to restore?

Try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restoreing.

  • IPOD keeps On asking 2 Restore..

Everytime I connect IPOD to the computer it asks me to restore. So I haven't been able to get it to work for months now..If there is not a at-home solution..does anybody know an estimate of how much the repair would cost if I took it to the Apple store???

    Hi lovintunes,
You could also try reformatting your iPod to FAT32, followed by a restore in iTunes. I've seen this work for recovery mode loops a couple of times before, so it just might help with your case.
To reformat your iPod like I was describing, follow these steps:
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - When iTunes has finished syncing with your iPod, open "My Computer".
3 - Right-click on your iPod, and click on "Format". (If your iPod is not showing in My Computer, make sure that disk use is enabled in iTunes).
4 - Here, verify that your formatting settings are "Default", with the format type set for FAT32. Also, make sure that "Quick Scan" is not selected.
5 - Then, click on "OK" to begin the formatting process.
6 - When this is complete (it might take a while), make sure to restore your iPod in iTunes again, so as to properly reload the firmware back onto it again.
    Any success after trying that?
If not, then let's also check that your USB drivers are up-to-date. And, in some cases, you may need to reinstall those drivers on your computer.

Try changing the iPod's drive letter as it may be conflicting with another device that has the same drive letter assigend to here. See here for more details.
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
