IPod killing headphones?

My 5.5G iPod video was doing fine until recently. In the past 3 months, I've bought and returned 3 pairs of high-quality earphones because after a while either the left or the right stopped working at a decent volume. On the second time, the clerk told me perhaps my iPod is sending electrical charges to my headphones and that's why there is always one side not working. I didn't really believe him until now.
It's my third pair of earphones now, the left one stopped working a couple of hours ago. Note that I'm only using them on my iPod and I'm really careful with them, so I can't believe I've been out of luck 3 times in a row. Should I downgrade my firmware, and is it possible that it's indeed my iPod who is killing my earphones?

I personally don't agree with the statement, I believe it is the bad contact between the iPod's earphone jack and the plug causing the problem.
You can see from time to time, there are posts regarding to they can only hear one channel from the earphones.
May be it is the quality control problem, after hundred times of plug and unplug of the earphones with the iPod, the iPod jack's metal contact parts become lose, and created space in between the plug and the jack.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit (if you good to deal with electronic part) at your own risk

  • Ipod killed two of my headphones.....

i jus recently had this problem, two of my headphones (not ipod headphones)play no sound when the cord is moved a certain way, and one of the headphones is like a yr old, and the weird part is that yesterday the newer one was workin fine for like most of the day then it quit makin sound when tha cord was moved a little bit.... i didn't do anything to these headphones, all i did was carry my ipod in my pocket w/ tha headphones plugged in.... I was j/w if this has happened to anyone else.... i mean they still kinda work but i havta hold the cord from movin' and if it moves like a mm the sound goes away til i find he "sweet spot" again...

well why would i have to send in my ipod? i mean i
understand when the headphone jack gets bent and
    all....
If the headphone jack on the iPod is broken/not
working properly, you would have to send in the iPod
    for repair.
umm... so the headphone jack is waht is causing my headphones to die, cuz i mean they completely died, i even plugged them into other headphone port and they didn't work, so would the headphone jack in the ipod kill headphones if it is broken? i really need to know cuz i jus bought some new ones and i don't want them to die, because 1.) they are my 3rd pair, and 2.) i have no more money to buy new ones so i need/want ta know if the headphone jack is the reason for the dying headphones.....

  • Windows 7 and the mic on the apple iPod/iPhone headphones

In summary, I do a lot of gaming with various online friends, and I tend to record the games a lot of the time too.
Now the issue is that the best recording software I have for the games is DXTory, which is windows based. I'm fine with that in that sense.
However windows 7 refuses to recognise the built in mic on the iPod/iPhone headphones that I bought about a month back (Before I was using the built in mic of my macbook pro and some now-broken sony headphones)
Whilst the built-in mic does record audio incredibly well, it also picks up my macbook pro's fan noises, resulting in an annoying background humming for a video, and for others through skype etc.
For the record, I'm using a Macbook Pro 15" (It uses an intel core2duo @ 2.66ghz and a Nvidia Geforce 9600m GT. Can't remember the year, but that should provide enough info), OSX 10.6.8 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I'm going to bump this because it's kinda urgent that I find out if I can or can't use my iPod/iPhone headphone's mic.

    Hi Mr.Acevedo329!
I have an article here for you that can help you troubleshoot the issues you are experiencing. That article can be found right here:
iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1382
Specifically, you will want to take note of this section:
    The headphones don't work
If your iPod's headphones don't work or have static or garbled audio, try connecting them to any other 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, like the one on your computer. If the issue with the headphones persists, replace them. For an iPod under warranty, you can order a replacement online. Otherwise, check out the cool headphones at the Apple Online Store. If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try resetting it. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • I connected my iPod Touch to a stereo system phono input using a cable with stereo jacks (red and white) on one end and that plugs into the iPod's headphone jack.  The problem is that the sound is extremely muffled and bass-heavy, with little treble.

I connected my iPod Touch to a stereo system phono input using a cable with stereo jacks (red and white) on one end and that plugs into the iPod's headphone jack.  The problem is that the sound is extremely muffled and bass-heavy, with little treble.  I have to turn the bass control on the stereo receiver to pratically zero in order for the sound coming through the stereo to be acceptable.  Is there a setting on either the iPod or the stereo that I need to change in order to fix this?

The phono input is for a phonograph.  The iPod does headphne output is not that same as a phongraph output.  Does th stero have an AUX input?  That should be compatible.

  • Is my iPod killing my iBook?

I'm on my 3rd iPod (meaning that I returned 2 and was given brand new ones by the Apple store followed by a, "this one better break by X date if you need it replaced."). Well, this iPod appears to be fried now too and I'm past X date.
I've been diligently trying to reset it via my iBook. It's not working and it keeps either automatically shutting down the iBook with no warning or freezing it up (the colored wheel has been spinning for at least the last 30 minutes while nothing else happens). Is this bad?
I know it's probably time to give up, admit defeat and chuck the iPod (after living its short 1-year life), BUT is it in any way worth it to keep hooking it up to my iBook in hopes of updating/reseting it? Is hooking up the toxic iPod killing my iBook? Help.

  • My ipod touch headphone jack do not work when I plug in any headphones to it.  How do I get to listen on headphones again on my IPod touch?

My ipod touch headphone jack do not work when I plug in any headphones to it.  How do I get to listen on headphones with my IPod touch?

You likely have a problem with the headphone jack.  You jhave to ways to listen to music via headphones:
    - Get the jack fixed.  Here is one place:
DigiExpress.us - The iPad Repair Professionals
However first I wold rule out a software problem by try the following:
    Reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults.
The other way is to use bluetooth headhone if you have a 2G or later iPod.

  • IPod Touch Headphone Jack Isn't Working?

I own the original iPod Touch, I have had it for about 9 months, and out of nowhere the other day, I plugged my headphones in to listen, and I could only hear some of the instruments, and no vocals. At first I thought it was my headphones, but then I tried several other pairs, and none of them worked either. However, when I plugged it into an iPod Docking Station through the connector (not the headphone jack) it worked fine, so I know it's a problem with my iPod's headphone jack.
Any suggestions on how I could fix this?

If you bought it new only 9 months ago, which I think would be a little difficult, you can send it in to Apple or take it to an Apple Store (make a Genius Bar appointment first) and get it serviced under warranty. If it is out of warranty you can try a 3rd party repair site such as http://www.iresq.com or use Google to find other such sites. If you are the DIY type try http://www.ifixit.com and look at the pictures/videos on how to disassemble the iPod and replace the headphone jack.

  • Headphone socket killing headphon

My zen, has developed problems with the headphone socket! It kills my headphones!?! I bought it in nov 07 so I could send it back I have a rma number, but last time I sent it back (with another probelm) they just sent it back to me and did nothing. Does anyone know anything more about this problem, it like stops them working in one ear. I've just got over one fault. Now another! :smileysurprised: Hmm it's weird, this also happened to my ipod nano first gen, that's why I got a zen, what's wrong with mp3 players, they all get the same problem. How do I proove it breaks my headphones?!

Yeah thanks I think I will phone them maybe, because I had to get a new rma number over the phone, I guess they can manually change the details of problems. It'll take ages. Ahh, but oh well. Gunna have to use my pocket money to send it lol. 5. I'm 6, I really need a job. The original problem was that the lock button would not work. I sent it for that then they sent it back'no faults' however the problem was still there. Then after about a week, the problem fixed itself, then a week later I got this problem! If I hadn't bought from the internet, say I bought it at asda they'd jst hand me a new one. I know not to use the internet in future lol.

  • Help! My Ipod Video Headphone Jack isn't working!

Hey guys. My Ipod video has starting messing up in the jack so that it doesn't play right in the right ear regardless of what headphones I use. Is this a common problem and any idea how to fix it or how much it costs to fix it and where I go?

The best place to go is an Apple store ,if it is under warranty will no fees.
If do not have an Apple store close to you, go to an authorized dealer.
I think its a minor issue may be the jack connector
    good luck

  • IPod Shuffle, headphones and speakers

Will my Bose Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones plug directly into an iPod Shuffle, or does this require the 3.5 mm stereo headphone minijack? If so is the minijack included with basic purchase? Also, is there a way to connect the Altec Lansing Orbit MP3 Speaker System into the Shuffle?

"Will my Bose Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones plug directly into an iPod Shuffle, or does this require the 3.5 mm stereo headphone minijack?"
The shuffle has a minijack; the package doesn't include adapters to use other size plugs with it. They're readily available, though; I use an ancient set of AKG K240 headphones with an adapter I bought at Radio Shack - the adapter outweighs the shuffle by a bit. Because of an impedance mismatch the AKG's won't match the volume levels of Apple's earbuds, but that's not an issue for me.
I'm not familiar with either your headphones or your speakers, but those are the things to think about. If the headphones don't have a miniplug, you'll need an adapter. The Altec powered speakers seem to have a miniplug, based on what I saw at their site.
    Good luck
