IPOD kills laptop... help

Help me please... I have been connecting 5th Gen iPod to my IBM T41 laptop via USB for the last few months and everything has been fine, however on Monday when I plugged my iPod in via USB it blew the power supply on my laptop immediately, in effect killing my laptop.
The only solution was to get a new laptop (luckily work have a few) and when I plugged iPOD in to my new laptop the same happened (but removing the battery for a bit enables me to turn laptop backon this time).
I am guessing it is something to do with a power spike from the iPOD battery or something, but why has it just started now.
Thanks in advance

I don't know if this will help... I have the same ipod and ran it on a desk top machine for a couple of weeks without problem, charged up loaded my tunes all fine, then it all started to go down hill...
Plugged in the ipod it loaded itunes and within 2-3 minutes computer crashed with all sorts of dire warnings both before it rebooted and having reloaded win XP.
Long story cut short, unplugged all usb peripherals leaving only the ipod connected to a USB2 port it still crashed and continued to do so five or six times - I took fright and decided to seek help.
No help to be found so I plugged it into a laptop (USB1) (having installed itunes to it got it up and running no problem took the opertunity of upgrading itunes and the ipod s/w and thought I would do a complete reinstall of the ipod s/w back to factory fresh. Did that and worked fine on the laptop.
Plugged it into the desktop rather expecting it to crash again (this was yesterday) and so far no problem have added some of my tunes just to check and all seems ok so far.
So........... Wonder if you have a corruption on your ipod that is doing your laptop in?
Hope this helps.

  • 2 IPODS one Laptop help

    Hi There
I have two IPODS running off the same ITUNES. I have tried manually updating them (as we both want different music) but it doesn't seem to work. Any help?
We tried to have 2 ITUNES on the same laptop but they just keep overwriting each other and we lose music, even when they are saved in different places.

When the iPods belong to two users, there are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. Each iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library.
Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Manual updating is another option that should work, I'm not sure what problems you are having with it but it should be possible to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

If you use iTunes store, you can download the lost content only buying it for the second time.

  • Contacts are not syncing to MobileMe, iPod or laptop

Tried syncing after the MobileMe switch, and my calendars and bookmarks updated fine, but my contacts did not. I could not get new and modified contacts from my MacPro to my MacBook or my iPod Touch, even after trying numerous times.
I tried resetting the data on MobileMe from my MacPro using "Reset Sync Data" from the Advanced option on the Sync tab in System Prefs, to no avail.
I then tried unregistering all computers, deleting the information for MobileMe, and resetting the Sync History in iSync itself, and starting from scratch and still nothing.
I have 314 cards in my Address book on my desktop but no matter how many times and what I've tried on syncing MobileMe, this is still what I see when I go to /contacts on www.me.com:
    "You have no contacts.
Click the 'New Contact' button in the toolbar or turn on Push on your iPhone or iPod touch and Sync on your Mac or PC. Learn more…"
Even more frustrating is now that I've reset everything to try to force the sync data to reset, my contacts are only on my MacPro, and not on my iPod or laptop at all anymore where I really need them.
(And now I notice that MobileMe is not updating changes I've made in iCal on the MacPro.)
Any help will prevent me from going insane, destroying property and injuring myself or others. Thanks!
(P.S.: Sync has always been a little flaky, so I'm posting this here as well as in the MobileMe forums in case it has to do with iSync and my system instead of MobileMe.)

Where is my address book - cannot access contacts - unable to sync address book from .mac to mobile me - are they all lost??????? I understand "they" are working on this? when will I have access to my contacts, etc? VERY FRUSTRATING - I have not memorized my contacts!!!!!!!

  • Is my iPod killing my iBook?

I'm on my 3rd iPod (meaning that I returned 2 and was given brand new ones by the Apple store followed by a, "this one better break by X date if you need it replaced."). Well, this iPod appears to be fried now too and I'm past X date.
I've been diligently trying to reset it via my iBook. It's not working and it keeps either automatically shutting down the iBook with no warning or freezing it up (the colored wheel has been spinning for at least the last 30 minutes while nothing else happens). Is this bad?
I know it's probably time to give up, admit defeat and chuck the iPod (after living its short 1-year life), BUT is it in any way worth it to keep hooking it up to my iBook in hopes of updating/reseting it? Is hooking up the toxic iPod killing my iBook? Help.

You will not be able to see what version you are running until the iPad is activated. It will be in Settings>General>About >Version when you can get to the settings app.
The slider bar that you are describing sounds like the screen lock side switch and that has no bearing on setting up the iPad or connecting to WiFi.
Why don't you try rebooting your router? Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again and see if the iPad will recognize and join the network.

  • HT4436 I am using IOS 4.1 in Ipod touch. I would like to take my data back using icloud. I am not able to enable icloud in to my ipod touch. please help me for the same.

I am using IOS 4.1 in Ipod touch. I would like to take my data back using icloud. I am not able to enable icloud in to my ipod touch. please help me for the same. Basically I am trying to take back to upgrade my ios to 5 or 6 version.

You can't back up to iCloud until you update to iOS 5 or higher.  You will have to back up your iPod on your computer using iTunes.  Update iTunes on your computer to the latest version, then connect your iPod to your computer, open iTunes, if iTunes give you a pop-up asking if you want to update your iPod, decline.  Then click on the name of your iPod in iTunes, go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer any purchased media to your iTunes library.  Next, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click on Back Up Now to back up your iPod on your computer.
When it's done backing up, click on Check for Update (or Update) on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings.  Allow your iPod to update, and leave it connected to your computer.  At the end, it will restart and give you the option to restore to the iTunes backup you made earlier.  Choose this option to restore your backup and sync your apps and other iTuens media to your phone.
This process is outlined in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972, under "If you are attempting to update using a Mac or PC with which you normally sync".

  • TS1424 Just purchased Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows.  But some (four) of the cuts did not download and can't be played or synced with ipod.  Any help?

Just purchased Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows.  But a few of the cuts did not download properly and can't be played or synced with ipod.  Any help?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the current copies from your iTunes library, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

    Hi Daisymae3,
The iPod shuffle does not use Windows Media Player to sync, it uses Apple’s iTunes application, available for free from this web site -
