Ipod lights up but is not recognized by computer  will die if usb disconnected

My 5th gen. ipod recently stopped being recognized by my computer. I use a USB cable and when unit and computer are connected the ipod screen lights up and then goes dark.  The ipod click wheel and button do not work even when the screen is up (shows menu).  If usb disconnects the unit immediately goes dark. Any thoughts?

That's usually a good indication that your iPod battery's is shot and in need of a replacement.  If you'd like, Apple can swap out the battery for a flat fee.

Otherwise, you can also send it to a third party repair service center that could do the same job for a little less. Google "ipod battery replacement" for different options.

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod nano charges but is not recognized

    Good morning.
Im writing this topic, because I saw all the topics about this same problem, and none of them solved mine. I hope you can help me on this, so here is the thing:
When I connect my iPod to the 2.0 usb port, the ipod lights its screen, charges, but neither windows or iTunes recognizes it.
    Ive tried going to:
    1. Going to control painel
    2. Double clicking System icon
    3. Hardware < Manager of Dispositives < Universal USB thing
When Im there, I disabled the options at USB ROOT HUB on "Computer can turn it of dispositive to minimize waste of energy", as I have read on the other article to do, but it didnt help.
Here is something that Ive tried everything to understand, but I cant: In the same place (Hardware - System - Control Painel), when the iPod is connected at the computer, my ipod appears on that list! But it comes with an Exclamation Point right next to its name, and it says that it needs an software to make it useful.
    The real message is:
The drivers for this dispositive are not installed.(Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers of this dispositive, click at 'Reinstall Driver'.
Doesnt iTunes install it or whatever? What can I do to get my iPod recognized by the iTunes and computer, and then sync my songs?
    Please, I need someone's help!
    Thanks a lot,

Did you ever find a solution for your problem. It is exactly the same as mine and I'm so frustrated with all the problems after spending so much money for something that is supposed to be fun.
I too have done everything suggested and still no answer. My computer will not install the driver or recognize the ipod exists.
If you did find an answer, please email me with anything you think may help.
    Thanks

  • My iPod touch 4g will charge but is not recognized by computer

I have done everything I know to do. My iPod touch 4g will charge from my computer but will not sync and is not recognized by the computer. I have tried it on 4 different computers and my brothers iPod touch 3G works and so does our iPad 2 but something is wrong my with just my touch 4g. Both of them have updated to the ios5 and I have not. I did the extremely stupid thing of resetting it and now it's just stuck an the original start up screen. So I can no longer even get into my touch. My 90 day has expired as well.
Please someone help me. My brothers have spent hours looking for ways to fix it but can't find anything. Nothing is working at all.

Did it work with previous ii.x version?

  • HT1363 iPod nano 5th generation is not recognized by computer

I've uninstalled and installed iTunes, gone through the 5Rs, attempted all the USB ports, restarted the computer, attempted putting the iPod in Disk Mode, and I'm now going to put my iPod on YouTube with a shameful sign on it to punish it until it connects to my computer and uploads my new music! Can someone help me make these two devices communicate. BTW, the cable is functional, too. Thanks.

i reset the device, reinstalled the DM software, spent hours trying to solve this issue nothing works - any help?

prior to doing anything, you need to install the USB drivers.
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=BlackBerryDesktopSoftware&thread.id=3...
after you have checked everything is okay, you can do the next step, that is install the Desktop Manager.
Moreover, ou can wipe your device so that there is no remains from the previous owner.

  • IPod touch Not recognized by Computer but charges?

    Hey all
Want to ask you to help me.
My iPod touch 4th generation is not recognized by the computer, when I plug it in, nothing happens. I got my working iPod touch 4th generation and plugged it in to the computer and the computer made that ding sound and itunes recognized it.
It is not the computer problem in this case. I just restored another 4th gen iPod Touch last night and it connected and everyrthing so this is a problem wirth te unit itself.
If this helps any, the screen was proffesionally replaced. (not by Apple)
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I checked the dock connector and the corners of it are worn to a tiny copper wire on the left side but it's not sticking out. My other 3 iPod touches 4th gens have the identical thing, 2 have it worse in fact, yet, they connect to the computer fine. It is a problem with the iPod itself...
I bought the iPod like this after the screen was replaced from eBay.  It was like this before the screen was replaced anyways.
    Any other ideas?

  • IPod classic (160gb) not recognized by computer

I have a 7th gen 160gb iPod classic which isn't recognized by my computer. I recently replaced the hard drive and battery and it seemed to go off without a hitch. After I put the front plate back on the screen lit up and everything was working. I connected it to my computer and synced it to my iTunes library, although it only would only sync 140 songs out of my 6000 song library. I connected my iPod a few more times and eventually the computer stopped recognizing the USB device. I restarted my computer, my iPod, I tried a new USB cable, and I tried plugging it into my other computer. No matter what my iPod wouldn't get recognized. When I plug it in the screen lights up and it charges but my computer doesn't recognize my iPod as a device.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

  • Ipod nano 1st gen is not recognized in itunes 10

I updated my computer system to leopard 10.5.8 as well as the latest itunes 10. I bought a new ipod nano 6th gen, and it syncs and works fine. The problem I have is my old Ipod. It is detected by my power mac on the desktop only the icon it has is a folder, and when I open it is in blank. I open Itunes 10 and it doesn't appear. And I tried to follow the instructions on apple support, tried all ports, tried reseting the ipod, and it is still not showing up on itunes. Can someone help me with this please?
Also, a white line showed up on the screen, does that mean the screen is broken? I can still see everything going on normally on the ipod but not where the line comes up (middle of the screen).
